NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I find
hope in the
darkest of
days, and
focus in the
brightest.
I do not
judge the
universe.
Dalai Lama

spent the entire morning speaking to my

85 year old Grandma; she is a beautiful
reminder of all that matters in life. She is
a funny gal with fantastic stories. Every time
I speak to her, our conversations are long
and filled with an amazing amount of love.
Reminding me that all my life she has taught
me that there is one great gift, time! Time we
share, time we waste. The only sure thing we all
have, an ever fleeting gift we are all given. The
question lies within us. What will we do with our time on this Earth? Will it count; will there be a
beautiful story? Will it matter in the lives of others? Will it matter AT ALL?
As much as I would like to say, I use every ounce of my time, wisely, with love and a solid
foundation creating momentum on a magnificent pathThe reality is much like so many of you,
I too fall victim to chasing the ole mighty dollar, getting bogged down under mountains of to do
lists, schedules and pointless commitments. Sharing my seconds with those who matter least
forgoing work for family and forgetting. Reminding me, to savor the seconds, breathe deeply and
take every ounce in. Although my time may not pass quickly, hers does. As we age the days turn
to minutes, minutes to seconds, and before we can look up, it is all over!
So, as I sit down to make my resolutions for this New Year, there will be no out with the old,
or in with the new. No bad habit I am looking to break or new fitness regimen. I am not interested
in taking up a new craft or furthering my education. As I begin 2013, there is only one thing on
my list; make every second count, not just in my life but in the lives of those I love and choose to
share my fleeting seconds with. Savoring every single second, seeking the beauty and lessons
each moment has to offer.
This February marks our four (4) year Anniversary. As many of you know, we tend to throw
one hell of a shin dig! This year will be no exception. Mark your calendars for Saturday, February
23, 2013 7:00 PM. This will be one Anniversary Bash you DO NOT want to miss! In the coming
weeks we will make an announcement about the exact location. For those of you who would like
to book your stay now, plan to stay in or around Hollywood/Ft Lauderdale International Airport
(FLL)
Until then.

the wave

(Continued from previous issue)

by: Pops Road King

These are the riders who understand why they wave to

other motorcyclists. They savor the wave. It symbolizes the
connection between riders, and if they saw you and your bike
on the side of the road, they would stop to help and might not
even ask your name.
They understand what you are up against every time you
take your bike on the road: the drivers that do not see you, the
ones that cut you off or tailgate you, the potholes that hide in
wait, the rain, the cold. I have been shivering and sweating on
a bike for more than 40 years.
Most of the riders that pass give me a supportive wave. I
love it when I see a younger rider on a crotch rocket scream
past me and wave -- new riders carrying on traditions.
As for myself, I will continue in my attempts to get every
biker just a little closer to one another with a simple wave of
my gloved clutch hand. And if they dont wave back when
I extend my hand into the breeze as I pass them, I will just
smile a little more.
They may be a little mistaken about just who is a breed
apart. -- Pops Road King

The Ride, Will She

REally Do it?

by: Catt

Im a 36 year-old mother of 3. I got my first ever motorcycle

on Mothers Day 2003. Up till then I had only ridden as a
passenger. My bike is a 1986 Yamaha Virago 1100.
This story takes place the weekend after taking the MSF
course. At the time of this ride I had been learning to ride for
4 weekends.
The morning started out with a test drive, went up and
down a few dead end streets near the house, and was really
feeling like I would wind up passenger on the ride. My
personal MSF instructor (boy-friend) asked if I felt up to riding
to the store about a mile from my house to fill up the tank. Im
game, so we head out with him in the lead, as we near the
end of my road I realize that I have to do the hill and turn to
get to the main road.
A bit of history, I have been teaching my youngest
daughter to drive and when she first started she was terrified

www.BikesBeauties.com

of this hill by the house, its just a small down grade, but it has
a turn at the top, and at the bottom before going back up and
turning again. I finally felt her concern as I was sitting at the
stop sign getting ready to head down the Hill. I take it slow
and it goes really smooth with me thinking the whole way,
press, lean, look through the turn. My BF is waving back at
me to make sure I am looking up and through the turn. Made
it, OK now the stop sign and on to the road to the store.
We get to the stop sign and sitting in the field across the
road is a car that has just come to a bad landing, looked like
they decided to jump the fence and park in the field (no one
appeared injured). I am thinking bad Omen. We continue
to the store, new problem, the store is closed. I decide we
have 2 choices if we are going to fill up the tank, before it hits
reserve, we can go in to the little town I live in, this means
crossing a 4 lane highway, not sure I am ready for that or we
can take the road we are on in to the next town, about 5 miles
and get gas on the same side of the road.
I go for the second option, he agrees and we head out
with me leading so he can watch my back. When we get
about halfway there I remember that the stop sign at the end
of this road is on a hill. Now I have to try starting from a stop,
up hill and make a left turn. I make it and continue on, now it
is downhill to a sharp right, aaarrrgggghhhh. Slow, slow, slow,
turn. We made it to the gas station, fill up and get ready to
head back home. I am feeling pretty good about this, so when
he suggests taking the main road back I agree. We go to the
light and make a left onto the four-lane highway complete with
traffic and stop lights. I slow for the red light, Yea! it turns
green I dont have to stop and try to get started again. I shift
up 3rd, 4th, 5th; I made it to 5th gear cool, this is really sweet,
running 55 down the main road, I could get used to this.
We get to the road we where we turn to head back to the
house; its a left across 2 lanes of traffic, then across railroad
tracks to another up hill from a stop left turn. As we straighten
out from the turn I am feeling like Ive got it, this is so cool. We
get back to the house and I cant stop grinning, I did it, I really
did it. So he asks if I think I can make it to Alabama, Im hyped
up and giddy from my accomplishments and say, sure, I can
do it. So we check the DOT site for traffic, grab our stuff,
put on sunscreen, bungee down the jackets and long sleeve
shirts, dont want to get cold if this takes longer than expected.
We decide to take the Interstate since there isnt any cross
traffic or stop lights to deal with. Im thinking this is great, no
problem, we get to the point where we head for the Interstate
ramp, uh oh, clover leaf type turn to get to the on ramp. I make
it, using my mantra of look through the turn, look through the

in Blue

o there we were, at the Raritan Road Runners MC

Poker Run sign-in at the Elks Lodge in Red Bank
NJ. My goal was to find the guy who was unable to
sell his Honda Dream to buy the 1965 BSA Lightning that I
now had, hoping that I could sell him the Lightning so I could
buy Large Louis 1964 Duo-Glide. My quest was now further
complicated by the fact that Big George not only asked us to
ride the Poker Run with Dawn Patrol MC, but also informed us
that we were being invited to join the club. Right now though,
I needed to find the guy with the Honda Dream. We were
signed in, finished with our coffee and donuts, so I decided Id
scour the parking lot to look for the guy. After only getting to
check out a couple rows of bikes I heard Big George yelling
Round em up! which was the signal to get in line, the
club was heading out to ride the Poker Run. Since we had
been honored with an albeit unofficial invitation to join, and
had been asked to ride with them, biker etiquette required us
to drop everything and get in line, which we did immediately.
At the back, of course, just in front of Skip Davis, the Rear
Road Captain.
The Poker Run was a lime run, with shovels full of
lime deposited on the side of the roadway to mark the route,
but since we were riding in the back, all we had to do was
follow the long line of bikes in front, being careful not to do
anything stupid and cause a collision. I knew of course, that
even though we were riding in the very back of the line, my
riding skills were still being watched and evaluated by the
Rear Road Captain. The Poker Run route took us through the
back roads of Monmouth, Middlesex, and Ocean Counties,
sometimes almost down to Burlington County. The scenery
was enjoyable, mostly desolate scrub pine, but not nearly as
wonderful as the gently rolling hills and farmland of Hunterdon,
Warren, and Sussex Counties. South Jersey is just plain flat
and rather dull. Plus anyone that has ever lived in NJ knows
that those (609) people are quite strange, and very weird, to
say the least. Even though RRR MC was a relatively new club,
they had a very large membership, so at every checkpoint on
the run they had tables set up with members manning them
where we would get a token to prove we had made the stop,
thus enabling us to draw our cards at the party spot at the
end of the run. At each stop along the way, I looked around
for the guy with the Honda Dream, but he was nowhere to be
seen. Since sign-up was 9:00-11:00 am, and we had left a
little before 10:00 am, I figured there was a good chance he
was somewhere behind us, and Id see him at the end.

www.BikesBeauties.com

We pulled into the final stop and party after about a 70

mile ride, at a VFW post on Rt. 571 in Lakehurst, not far from
the Naval Air Station. The post building was surrounded by
acres of open fields where RRR MC members were directing
riders to a designated parking area. Snaking in from the road,
the long line of Dawn Patrol MC bikes slowly parked side by
side. Being at the end of the line just before the Rear Road
Captain, we were last in. We drew our cards, then got in line
for a cold one before hitting the food line. I, of course, couldnt
wait to find the guy, but since we hadnt seen him at the
sign-in, nor during the actual ride, hed be pulling in later, so
there was no rush. Might as well just relax with Susie and our
friends in Dawn Patrol MC over a couple cold ones for a bit.
The bikes kept piling into the large field being used for
a parking lot, a huge turnout for the RRR MC first Poker Run
ever. I was guessing maybe 600-700 bikes total, which was
huge for 1969, with so many less people riding in those days.
After chowing down, it was time to look for the guy. I hadnt
seen him pull in, so Susie and I decided to start walking up
and down the aisles of bikes, hoping maybe to find the Honda
Dream and him close by. Up and down the rows of bikes
we went, and then I saw it. No, not the Honda Dream, but a
gorgeous 1966 H-D Electra-Glide with a For Sale sign on it!
Best Offer. No reasonable offer refused was hand written in
magic marker along with a phone number. My heart started
to race. This was the new Electra-Glide, with the brand new
Shovel-Head motor, (long before they earned the dubious
nickname of Trouble-Head) electric starter, 10% more HP
than the Pan-Head motor, and improved oiling system, and
it was the color scheme I loved, metallic blue with white tank
insert! This bike had the King of the Road package, which
included the larger saddlebags and the large Tour Pack.
The very first Electra-Glide was the 1965 model year, with
the Pan-Head motor and electric start, but the kick starter
was retained in that one year only. Once again, the gears in
my brain started turning, wondering if maybe I could get this
much more desirable bike for about the same price as Louies
1964 Duo-Glide. Of course, I still needed to find the guy, but
all of a sudden I had a second guy I needed to find. I really
liked the Duo-Glide, but this Electra-Glide was what I really
wanted all along, especially in metallic blue and white. Now all
I needed to do (or so I thought) was to find out exactly what a
reasonable offer was.

hroughout each year, we meet

countless fans and loyal readers at
home or out on the road. All sharing
the undying passion of two wheels firmly
planted on any open highway. Knees in the
wind, in search of the next great ride, kickass
event, mayhem filled bash or run for charity.
All joined by one common denominator; a love
for poor mans therapy if you will; a breeding
passion for motorcycles we all share.
In our journey it is ever apparent; no
matter your background the two wheels are
what bind us. The diversity is amazing, much
like the steel horses they ride. We have always
been fascinated to see what each individual
chooses to call their own, the story behind it
and their tales on the road. Each proving you
can learn all you need to know about a person
after a conversation and an inspection of their
motorcycle.
Each January in celebration of you, our
loyal fans and readers, we feature three rides
that stick out for different reasons. Laying
them out in true BBM style exactly the way
our Editor Christy sees things. This month
true to her self- proclaimed, Funny a-hole
fashion, in the mountain of submissions we
have randomly chosen three rides. The What
the Hell is that thing bike built by local import
Petr Valder. When we asked him about it, he
explained, I got an aftermarket Harley frame
and I had a CBX with a rusted frame, so I put
it together. Take a peak for yourself, this bike
is crazy!
Because no true beauty should ever be
left out, the second bike we feature is owned
by none other than local Biker Betty, Connie
Bruno. Her signature Bobber is not only unique
it is a true reflection of its owner. Painted by
hand Connies scoot, appropriately named
Bobbet, is a true one of a kind. Last but not
least, the 1999 Harley-Davidson in desperate
need of a little TLC or maybe a bath!

n 1999 the Harley-Davidson Road King, as

well as other Harley-Davidson models, came
from the factory powered by the new Twin
Cam 88 engine. The engines name came from the
addition of second cam to actuate the push rods for
the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust
valves, thus the new engine had two cams, one
cam with two lobes for each cylinders two valves,
compared to the Evolution engines use of a single
cam with four lobes. The gears driving the cams in
the Evolution engine were replaced with a chain
in the Twin Cam engine. The 88 represents the
displacement of the engine in cubic inches (1447cc).
The engine also incorporated other improvements
such as oil jets positioned to spray the bottom of
the pistons to help cool the engine, and increased
cooling fin area. In 2000 Harley-Davidson offered a
95 cu. in. big-bore kit that increased Twin Cam 88
engine displacement to 1550cc.

Lady rider feature

> Uli the unruly <

Shes a Feisty One! Some say a little Unruly!

ever forget my first

bike. It was a secret.
Had to be .My parents
would have killed me . My father,
a local , prominent dentist, had
been riding a bike, a big Horex,
before he changed identity to
doc hood and my sweet,tiny,
fairy-like blue-blooded mother
to my utter amazement had
been riding that bike herself while
they were dating, riding all over
Europe together- couples who
ride together stay together They
even lost a couple of jobs, she
in ballistic research, he a dental
student ,working at labs, because
they threw a bad, dubious light
on the establishment, it was
considered simply completely
inappropriate. My mothers family
was never to know. My father is not fond of authority and
will always do as he pleases, regardless of consequence.
Bullheaded. Born Christmas Eve, hes quite the Ram .
Now you know where Unruly is rooted . I was categorically
forbidden to even look at a motorcycle. Loving my matchbox
cars, our big dogs and horses, pixie cut, overalls wearing, tree
climbing, fearless ,boy boxing blond-ling, I had always been
a Tomboy , a great disappointment to all wishing me to be the
presentable little girl .
My best friend Waf finally rode his dark green Puch to
shreds, his father bought him a new one and I inherited the
Puch. Life began. I stashed it behind the bushes . No starter
and no brakes. Had to pull hard on one cable and RUN like
crazy, the second it started, jump on and take off. No problem
for a Tomboy .The roads around Alpine lakes tend to be
steep, you NEED brakes. Id go through a pair of sneakers
or two in a week. I was blessed with extremely preoccupied
parents who didnt pay much attention, thus could live it up
fearlessly. Id ride everywhere. Every day, rain or shine. Soon
my friends would hop on and wed ride everywhere together
Chrissy behind, Elke on the tank, having the time of our
lives. While taking the usual 1500 steps shortcut down that
were connecting the serpentine mountain roads- marvelous,
breathtaking view: the Alps in the background, the glacier lake
before it,glistening in the setting afternoon sun -bopbopbop,
nice and slow , bop-bop-bop,careful not to get off course ,
bop-bop-bop, girls squealing suddenly ,on the very bottom,
a cop car. Chief of Police, Chrissys father. Too late to stop, no
way to turn back, we had to continue all the way down. Boy ,
did I get in trouble. But, my father, a sensible man, caved and

www.BikesBeauties.com

bought me a bike.
Riding all over Europe with
the orange Ducati,a BMW,
Norton, another BMW. Prepared
a story about ABATEs Freedom
Ride, in 1990, I believe. That
instantly sealed my fate on this
side of the pond. Met all the bikers
of the day, putted along on a 450
Hondamatic that Charles quickly
produced for me. Amazing how
many people knew, such a
great community back then,
almost no women rode, very
few wannabes, strangers on
bikes would yell better than
the Mustang,right. Loved that
brotherhood,
togetherness.,
no drama, maybe a bar-fight
sporadically, everyone loved
life, riding all day, seeing each
other. Big John suckered me into buying a Harley ,sight
unseen and brought me a basket case, not a running bike.
Had to travel to Europe again, writing , hosting TVshows, postproduced, commented Wrestling ( WWF and WCW,Sumo
etc.), creative head of Americas Funniest Videos. Meanwhile
Charles had transformed that sad basketcase into a fasterthan-hell caf-racer-type wonder with straight pipes and extra
goodies . Now the time of all the good stories began.50, 75
, 150 people, to the Keys, shooting down Biscayne, doing 95
at 2am, chasing each other, I was one of the guys, always,
no fuss, no muss oh man, what a wild, good time that was
! Then, real life. Lost everything abruptly. Every ending is a
new beginning switched TV for Bikes and Beauties , got
a CHIPS KZ1000P Broom; a customized 1200 Sportster,
superfast, a dream to handle, Red Flyer, starting out this
New Year with the HUB-Hog, Petes 1989 Softail . Joined
the Patriot Guard Riders. Riding is in your blood or not. I still
ride, rain or shine, with Charles, my beloved brothers, my
favorite girls. For all good causes, Charity and benefits- ride,
ride anywhere, everywhere. Life is fantastic. I survived last
year, have at least one bike that runs , a great kid and an
incomparable, big, wonderful family blood and extended.
The best anyone could ever hope for. Sometimes you have to
lose everything you have, to gain everything you really want.
Oh, so many more stories to tell, so many more to live .
See you in the wind.
Ride, Mutha, Ride!
And ride it like you stole it!

Bring On

2013
A

s 2012 ends and the New Year begins

lets hope its not as fucked up as this year
has been. Over the last twelve months the
world has gone through some shit. Here in the US, we
have managed to reelect possibly the worst president in
history. We have had a mad man go on a shooting killing
spree in an elementary school. We watched in horror
as a super storm as they called it hit the Northeastern
coastline, UGA lost to UA (yes that was a tragedy). We
have had record high inflation.
On top of the craziness, we have lost some great people
such as Neil Armstrong, Sally Ride, Ernest Borgnine, Andy
Griffith, Bob Welch, Ray Bradbury, Donald Duck Dunn,
Dick Clark, Mike Wallace, Don Cornelius, Etta James and
many, many more. Too many to list in my little corner of
space here.
We did not see the end of the world on 12/21/12 as
predicted so thats good. We had Time magazine make
Obama their most interesting man of 2012! WTF is that
about? Out of the countless humans on the planet hes
it? You couldnt find anybody more interesting? Hey
dumbasses look a little harder next time.
As we come into the New Year I am keeping my
expectations low and my hopes high! I will try and be kinder
to others, thoughtful of other peoples feelings.. Yea f#ck
that! Im just gonna be me! Merry Christmas to everyone
and if me saying Merry Christmas offends you that ok! You
offend me.

Happy New Gear!

13 ,1200 and 42 passe !

Magic.

e made it, we made it ! Despite the unnerving

Hoopla
in
the
distracting,
mindless,
manipulating media and anxiety for some
doomsday believers - absolutely NOTHING happened on Dec
21st, 2012 - as expected. Well, aside from some hysterical
leapers ($200 a jump- into the portal, opening to the
Universe, to the other realm that wasnt), or the Restaurant
at the Edge of the Universe,
that was booked solid that
night. The New Year is here,
swift and smooth , 2013,
Lucky 13 , the Year of the
Snake . A lucky omen in
the country of origin. Here,
not so much . Im going to
ignore that. Im pretty good
at ignoring. Un-ignorable is,
that we do live in Paradise
and we have lots of likeminded , loveable, fabulous
people around us with whom
to share our joy .
Last month alone was
incredible- the highlight being
the 25th Annual SFPC Toys
for Tots run with between
30thousand to 50thousand
bikes ( the info varies
about the exact number- no
matter, it was a helluva lot of
bikes, OK ! ) was absolutely
fantastic again . A far cry
from the 50 to 75 bikes in the
beginning, the Park-n-Ride ,
Lantana and CB Smith Park
and so on. It had its charm,
though, instant gratification
,to see all the toys on the
back of back then- real bikers, what a contrast, marvelous.
Santa handed the toys to the kids right then and there and
you could see their faces beaming. Priceless. Now that its
become so gigantuous, that has changed, but, its still a
marvelous experience every year. I just hope that next year
theyll create another entrance or two, so we wont have
that many break downs. The Red Flyer totally overheated
and I had to roll to the side , turn it off and wait for it to cool
down. Took the opportunity and did a little video, took some
www.BikesBeauties.com

pictures and an angry hornet of the BSO on 2 wheels came

whipping up, ordering me to come on, move it, move it. I told
him no, my bike overheated and I was waiting for it to cool
down. He was very pushy about me leaving NOW.. I must
say, I got a bit angry, I dont like to be pushed especially not
by someone who, obviously doesnt care about whats mine.
I will NOT kill my motor because somebody in uniform bullies
me. A wee bit more Sensitivity Training is in order for next
time, guys. Harleys arent
made
for
stop-n-go,
apparently, and who needs
to wreck their bike, burn their
thighs , rip their clutch cables,
wreck their nerves on such a
beautiful occasion lets give
good cheer not get a heart
attack . This year, for the first
time since I can remember,
I was coaxed into visiting
the campground afterwardsand loved it! What a great
camaraderie among clubs
and independents alike. Food
galore, fires and friends.
Nothing better. Thanks for
the hospitality, guys! I didnt
get home until the wee
morning hours, thanks, in
part, to the incredible, thick,
blinding, spooky fog causing
me to crawl home, avoiding
canals and Glades swamp in
my path. Dont ask.
Mickeys was, as always,
THE place to be for a party
or three the people, the
incomparable
Lisa-Buffet
and choice of entertainment
is unparalleled. Feels like
old HUB days. Really. Dave
created a REAL biker bar there , home to the Mickeys tribe
as he called it. Despite all the un-pleasantries, last year, 2012,
was a great year. Gotta look at the bright side. We lost some
really wonderful , unforgettable people, friends, brothers,
loved ones. May they all RIP, they will never be forgotten.
May the void they leave cease hurting.
Hope you had your bikes checked and youre going into

CUBAN FOOD?

In South Florida? Really?

o it seems everywhere you look

there is a Cuban restaurant or
some form of latin food from every
latin back ground you could imagine, which you would be
surprised how diverse the latin taste buds can be. From Puerto
Ricos signature Mofongo and Pionono at El Rinconcito to
Colombian dishes like Morcilla Rellena or Blood sausage
and Arepas and Ajiaco soup or Sancocho. I have also had
quite a bit of Mexican food in my travels through Texas, New
Mexico and Arizona and find myself always missing my South
Florida Cuban Cuisine.
Some of my favorite places to visit are Versailles on 8th
street of course, Islas Canarias in down town Miami, Romeus
in West Pembroke Pines, and my Favorite will have to be El
Palcio De Los Jugos. With a few locations I would have to
say the one on Coral Way just east of the Palmetto would
have to be like falling into Cuban Food Heavan. BTW if you
dont speak Spanish you might want to bring someone who
does because no one speaks english here, I usually just ask
someone there to help me with my order and usually dont
have a problem with willing hungry people to help me.
If you have never had real Chicharrones then you dont
know what you are missing, these arent the ones you buy in
the stores in bags from the potato chip companies. These are
the real straight off the pig deep fried pork and skin strips that
Cubans treat as Candy. Until you have these then you will
never understand, but this is just the beginning of a gastric
Cuban indulgence that you will never forget. Next on the menu
would be the Lechon Asado or roasted pork for the Spanish
impaired, swimming with onions and garlic you cant pass this
up if you love pork. Next is the best Masas De Puerco or
Deep Fried Pork Chunks I have ever had, once again served
with cooked onions and possibly the best way to have pork in
my Professional Foodie Opinion. On we
go with perfectly cooked white rice with
just the right amount of whatever they
use to keep it from sticking together,
usually lard but who care when its
perfect right? Also the best Frijoles
Negros with more beans than gravy
real thick and made from scratch. Fried
If you have a Restaurant or a bar you would like to share with

sweet plantains, Tostones or green plantains and the best

Yuca I have ever had also swimming with garlic.
I must say that I never knew that Cubans can make the
best Chinese fried rice I have ever had but they do. LOL!!
Full of shrimp and chicken and can be a meal on its own.
Paella Seafood Saffron Rice, Ribs, Stuffed Fish Filets, Ropa
Vieja, the list goes on and on. Then when you think your in
Cuban Food Euphoric. Time for the exclamation point on
your Cuban Experience
DESERT!!!!! everything your taste buds could ever hope
for, FLAN! FLAN! FLAN! Bakery made and Home made to
choose from, Tres Leches, Coconut thingys that im not sure
what they are called but you need to have one and every kind
of juice you can squeeze from a fruit. Pineapple, Watermelon,
Coconut, Orange, Papaya etc
Then top it all off with some real Cuban coffee so you
dont need a nap. I think Cuban Coffee is my staple for every
day.
Un Cafe Con Leche, Fuerte un pocito con azucar.
Porfavor!! I think I got that down pat? Not bad for a gringo. : )
Gracias!!

New England Nation

Invades South Florida

n the weekend of December 2, 2012, The

Village Pump in LauderdaleBy-The-Sea
became South Boston for the weekend!! All
over South Florida the region was awash with the Blue,
White and Silver of the New England Patriots team colors!!
If you did not know they were from New England by what
they were wearing surely the accent gave it away as soon
as they ordered a beerya from the baaaar or, if you
got stuck at Dunkin Donuts behind some of them. New
Englanders are proud of their accent! Following the home
town sports teams and companies with serious passion.
Dunkin Donuts was founded in Quincy, Massachusetts in
1950.
The Village Pump was the official headquarters
with a 3 day block party. The festivities kicked off Friday
night with a welcoming party with the local band called
Mr. Nice Guy ripping it up at the Jazz on the Circle. This
is where the town allows the Village Pump to block off
El Mar Drive on Friday night till 10:30 p.m. They have a
nice stage set upon the street with an awesome sound

Every so often there is an organic uprising of

something fantastic. Recently Miami has become a
Mecca of Vintage and Caf Racer Motorcycles. Far
removed from their day of glory yet, resurfacing as the
hottest fashion accessory to hit the runway in 2012.
Striving for achievement as organic visionaries there is
one group leading the pack, emerging in the spotlight
where others have faltered.
Founded in the summer of 2012, Metal305 is
quickly becoming South Florida s vintage motorcycle
authority. Creating unique environments giving likeminded moto-enthusiasts the opportunity to come
together to showcase their vintage wares. Sunday
after thanksgiving, Metal305 invaded Churchills Pub
for Miamis first vintage and classic motorcycle swap
meet. Providing an avenue for all custom shops
available for vintage motorcycles to come together
in one place, show for free allowing the masses a
convenient location to fulfill their elusive vintage needs.
Churchills Pub in Miami was transformed into a onestop shop for all your vintage needs with live music and
door prizes including, Best Bike, Biggest Swap, and
Best Biker Chick. Appropriately named Black Sunday,
with its inaugural year falling just after Thanksgiving,
this was a truly unique experience.
Metal350 founders Alex Mackenzie & Matt Atkatz
came together after meeting on Instagram, both shared
an interest in Italian vintage bikes and wanted to help
build and support the vintage motorcycle scene in South
Florida. They then added local artist, Aaron Willard, and
now the three are quickly growing the scene currently
expanding throughout the tri-county area. We had a
chance to speak to the trio about the success of the
event and future plans for Metal305. When asked Matt
Atkatz said, Our goal is to make South Florida a worldclass location for vintage motorcycle riders, builders,
and collectors. Black Sunday is just the beginning
were currently in the pre-planning stages for other
vintage events that we think will be one-of-a-kind.

Biker Bash There are a myriad of events leading up to

the Annual Toys in the Sun Run. One of our favorite events
is the Seminole Hard Rock and Seminole Tribe of Floridas
Biker Bash to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward
County. As with all events hosted by the Seminole Hard Rock
Live, the Biker Bash is jam-packed with Celebrities, local
entrepreneurs, Industry leaders and media representatives
and this year was no exception.
On a brisk Friday evening over a thousand guests packed
the Hard Rock Live for a night of dinner, drinks, live auction,
and stellar musical entertainment. This year we were graced
with the presence of DJ and MTV Jersey Shores, Pauly D &
the legendary rocker Steven Tyler, before Def Squad took to
the stage to bring everyone to their feet, An ya dont stop a
rockin to the bang bang boogie, Say ya jump to the boogie to
the rhythm of the boogety beat. (Redman)
Each year countless entities come together in the name
of charity raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to benefit
this great charitable organization. The Boys & Girls Club of
Broward Countys sole purpose is to provide children ages
6-18 a place to go to get away from social pressures and
temptations designed to help improve their lives by building
self-esteem and developing values and skills during this
critical period of growth. Their youth services and programs
provide focus on everything from education, social recreation,
health and physical education, to leadership and citizenship
development, cultural enrichment, and personal adjustment
with one-on-one counseling. The mission of the Boys &

with local TV and Radio Personalities gather at the Joe

For those of you that have never had a sick child
let me speak from experience when I tell you that it is
events like this that help remind you that you are still
amongst the living when your life has become a myriad
of tests, needles and heartache. It was fantastic to be a
fly on the wall as the many little faces lit up in excitement
as Santa came to visit bringing with him, a one little girl
said, Wow! A party.
All charitable events at the Joe DiMaggio Childrens
Hospital are led by the Memorial Foundation that was
established in 1981 to provide philanthropic support
supplementing revenues received by Memorial
Healthcare System. Their combined efforts with local
corporations, clubs, organizations and citizens wishing
to give has helped memorial fulfill their mission; To
provide safe, quality, cost-effective, customer-focused

ability to pay.

There are thousands of toy runs across the country

throughout the month of December. We have seen
our fair share and none compare to the SFPC Annual
Toys in the Sun Run. The twenty fifth annual event that
started in 1987 with seven hundred motorcycles, netted
less than a thousand dollars and brought in about
500 unwrapped toys has now become the largest toy
run in the world with over thirty-five thousand bikes
and millions of dollars in toys and donations. This
monumental display of charitable giving is brought to life
every year by the efforts of the organizing Motorcycle
Club, Wings of Gold along with the help of over thirtytwo other clubs and organizations throughout the state
of Florida. The spectacle that is the Toys in the Sun Run
unfolds every year with the help of all police agencies
including twenty-two departments and two hundred and
thirty uniformed officers who close down three major
interstate highways as perfectly as ballet rendition of
Swan Lake, seamless and perfectly choreographed.
This years 25th annual toy run started at the Mardi
Grad Casino in Hallandale Beach, Florida and traveled
to beautiful Markham Park in Broward County just off of
State Road 84. Participants arrived to find a plethora of
Vendors and Bike Builder displays, including everything
from rock climbing wall and bull riding to leather goods
and sunglasses, a bike show presented by Ron
Catronio of the Big Bike Riders Childrens Foundation
and a car show presented by Cruisers of South Florida.
As the afternoon ticked away and the sun began to
fall, Tattoo Dave Amchir took the stage to pay tribute
to his late great father, Bob Amchir and the amazing
legacy that he created nearly twenty four years ago in
the name of childrens charity. Proceeds of this amazing
event benefit the Joe DiMaggio Childrens hospital
and have also benefitted Cystic Fibrosis, Juvenile
Diabetes, cancer, pre-natal and much more. Because
of the SFPC vast commitment to the community this
event has reached and helped so many in need.
Special thanks to the hundreds of volunteers, clubs
and organizations that helped make the SFPC Toys in
the Sun Run another huge success.

miles were dedicated to training rides which
took me to every corner of the United States.
I have seen the beauty of our great country,
and I yearn for more. I cannot explain my
passion for the open road; many have asked
me why I do it. All I can tell you is that it
drives me, it calms me, and it calls to me like
a bee to the hive, like a lion to his prey, like
a man searching for his soul in a world out
of his control. I know that most people think
I am crazy, and they may be right. But, I feel
as if a great weight is lifted from me every
time I ride. I can feel the wind blowing away
bad decisions, poor attitude, and negative
thoughts with each mile I travel. I can see the
possibility for a joyful future, the promise of
new possibilities, and a brighter day to come
as each mile marker flashes by. To me riding
is truly living. And, Im not talking about the

by pushing the little red button on the right handle bar controls.
When I started the motorcycle a big smiles rose across my
face like a child on Christmas morning. I was in heaven, now
for the moment of truth. Mom said let the clutch out slowly
and give it a little gas by turning the throttle down. I heard
what mom said, but I did the opposite, I choked the throttle
and popped the clutch. Most of you know where this is going.
Those of you that have done this know that by ripping the
throttle and dropping the clutch that your motorcycle will take
off really fast. Well, that is exactly what happened. Because
the bike was very light the front end came straight up off the
ground, my sight line was the sky, my right foot was dragging
the ground, while my left foot searched for the foot peg to get
my leg up. The bike continued in a semi straight line moving to
the right as I peered to the side to see the chain link fence that
surrounded the property quickly approaching. I could hear my
mother yelling something, but it wasnt registering in my head,
I was in a full scale panic. The bike finally pulled to the right

and smacked the ground throwing me about ten feet in front

of the motorcycle. I was wearing a pair of Husky jeans, boots,
and a tank top, and no helmet! I traveled about 100 feet, as
my mother was running up to me, I noticed I was bleeding. My
shoulder took the brunt of the fall, but I had also cut my chin,
just enough for my white tank top to be splattered with droplets
of blood. I looked up at my mom, and she asked me Are you
OK? I said, Yes!, embarrassed by my appearance. Mom
asked me What do you want to do? I said, I want to learn
how to ride. Mom said, Then pick up the motorcycle and do
what I told you to do. I did what mom told me to do and 36
years later I have never stopped. My mother has taught me
many things in my life, but none have been so important or as
influential as that hot summer day in 1976. My mother turned
72 in December. She doesnt ride anymore, but she is still the
inspiration for my passion for motorcycles and riding. Thanks
Mom, I love you.

Mechanic Mike Cloudas

Petersons Harley Davidson
Mike has been working on Black Beauty since the beginning
of October. As Mike started taking parts off Black Beauty he found
issues with the cylinders, pistons, flywheel, and lifter valves.
Once the motor was completely apart Mike found metal shavings
throughout the motor which was collecting in the oil cooler. He
advised me that he flushed out more metal flakes than he has ever
seen, he was amazed at the ability of the motor to run with such a
buildup of debris. Mike will have the cylinders bored, and replace
the pistons, flywheel, and any other damages components. He will
also rewire all electrical components and replace all connections
do to corrosion. Mike advised me that he will have over 50 hours
of time invested in Black Beauty before she sees the road for a
brake in ride. We hope to have Black Beauty back in full training
and competition mode by mid-December.

NEW YEAR,

New You!
The New Year is upon us and many of us take this time of transition to evaluate
our lives and set goals for ourselves. We may start with the best intentions to
correct bad habits and get healthy, but if youre anything like me, a few weeks
after January 1st youre back to your old ways.

Here are a few tricks

that can help you stick
to your plan:

- Be realistic.

Set small, attainable goals and stick with them.

Small successes will lead to bigger ones.

- Everyday is Monday.

Dont wait for Monday to start over. If you find yourself cheating on
your promises to yourself, take a deep breath and start over right
away.

- Dont Beat Yourself Up.

Negative thought patterns contribute to failure, not success. Focus on

the positive!

- Make it fun.

Dont make getting healthy a chore. Remember running around for

hours as a kid and never complaining? Because we were playing not
exercising!

- GET A MASSAGE!

Yeah yeah, of course Id say that, but its true! Getting a massage is a
simple way to get healthy and feel better!

In addition to feeling better, massage will provide a plethora of health

benefits like reducing stress, easing recurring headaches, lowering your
blood pressure, increasing circulation, easing tension, pain management,
and much more. Most days, we are so busy that taking a walk or cooking a
healthy meal at the end of a long day is just too much. Massage is a simple
way to ease into a healthier lifestyle. There is no sweating or effort required.
All you have to do is show up and get on a warm, comfy table and relax.
When you receive massage regularly, you will feel less stressed and more
focused to take that walk or cook that healthy meal. Massage is the perfect
escape for the over-stressed person with no energy and even less time.
If you would like to know more about the benefits of
massage therapy you can visit my website at
www.bodyworkbykelly.net, or contact me via email at
kelly@bodyworkbykelly.net. Or, if computers arent your
thing, feel free to call me at 754-551-0220.
I wish you and yours a happy and
healthy New Year!

the New Year flawlessly, fresh and new. Unlike me, the
mehmoniker, not heeding to my own advice leaving work
to pick up Bronson, the kid , from school.. had had problems
with my clutch a couple of days prior, ran out of fluid, shame,
shame on me . Refilled, thanks to the cursing Charles the
Great and all was well. Until THAT day. And, of course, things
happen when youre in a hurry, under time pressure. Gotta
pick up the kid before 5 so you make it back to work by 6,
and the clutch goes again.. You know, to the point of the bike
walking like a determined stubborn elephant, regardless of
you pulling the clutch all the way in
and pulling the brake, where you
have to turn the engine off at the
red light, on the bridge incline, cuz
it wont get into neutral, then you
have to put it in gear, so it wont
croak when you start and then put
it in first, but, instead, it will make a
bronco leap forward, into the back
of the car in front, if you dont give
it enough space. Just a lunge leap
forward, not the one through the
portal, opening to the Universe,
to the other realm that isnt . And,
riding through Aventura, during
rush hour , you just KNOW some
idiot will cut into the tiny space in
front of you, fitting in or not, almost
hitting you, and you have to wait
until hes far enough away for your
bike to leap into first and then some
other impatient jerk, afraid to lose an inch, honks their horn
at you. Enough to be glad you dont carry a baseball bat
or Billy club on your bike. I was sweating bullets, knowing I
had a ways to go to the kids school like that and then, you
gotta ask yourself: is it really responsible to put the kid on
the back of this situation? My upper lip was cold and damp
. Hell, no. First, to get the bike home in one piece, though.
Then get the kid via cab. I made it to the red light between the
Flashback Diner and Racetrack. First at the light. Good. Got it
into neutral this time, while coasting. Great . Light turns, I turn
the key, it starts. Yay. Nice, rich, healthy rumble . No walking.
Odd, but great. Release clutch .Nothing. Odd .Revving it. It
wont budge. Suddenly it hits me- the clutch is f***ed up, what
if it suddenly grabs and I climb up the next palm tree??? Done
that years back, you know. Scared half the neighborhood to
death then, including the guys at the bus stop and the patrons
and crew at the Honduran Restaurant across the street, who
sensation hungrily had gathered outside to catch a glimpse
of the mishap and humiliation. Maybe some blood, even. You
never forget. The cop in the cruiser to my right hollers over
Hey, you need help? I nod , turn off the bike and start walking
it, blue light police escorted, across the huge intersection, the
sidewalk, onto the Flashback Diners parking lot. Thanks, cop.
There I see the problem: the belt had ripped clear in half. Had
just bought the damn thing, too. Well, a year ago .End of the

go, while waiting for the cab, they allowed me to leave the
Red Flyer in the lot until it would get picked up, all cameras
on it, very biker friendly, good to know. But, now I was totally
stuck . The HubHog wasnt quite ready, yet, smiling at me,
though.. the Police Kawie Broom is still in pieces , piece-fully
dormant, as it was left last year nothing to ride. Stuck . I hate
when that happens .
Thank the motorcycle gods for brotherhood, Woody (954683-4898) came and got it with his trailer , after a frantic search
for his truck keys, right after Robert ( 305-773-5515) called to
offer pick up and Bruce Reese, the
guy with the flatbed transport for
bikes and antique cars (954-8014869) , who had rescued the Red
Flyer from the lot that fateful May
last year. Great to have emergency
numbers and reliable folks like that.
Feel free to copy them. 2 days later
it was all good. Pretty much. Iron
Maiden ready to ride again. Ready
for new adventures.
Congrats to the USMV MC ,
Ch. 2, Deuce Wild ( my favorite
people) for getting their new
home , their Clubhouse , set
up and organized, what a great
party, magnificent buffet, as well
thanks for the invite, guys ! Went to
Flossies and Cagneys afterwards,
first time the round after that fateful
May Day . It went smoothly, without
incident, saw great people, enjoyed wonderful music all in
all , a time to remember the good way.
Lets RIDE, people- the weather is perfect this time of
year , we live in Paradise, lets RIDE. Anywhere, everywhere,
lets just DO it and love and enjoy each other. Lets have a
brew and a hug on that.
Always keeping in mind that life is precious and can be
over in a blink of an eye - among all the paradisiacal, theres
a lot of evil out there. Be safe out there, watch your drinks (
no, take it from me, you DONT taste the stuff, or you wouldnt
be drinking it, right?) , lets have fun, have each others backs,
be kind and pay it forward whenever you can! If you cant
say anything nice, shut your trap, sing instead. You know the
answer to life, the universe and everything: 42. Still searching
for the question. Bah, details.
January 13 is here. A new era has begun, if we want it to.
Lets make it a magnificent one.
Lets make this the best year, yet at least we survived
the last one. My memory is coming back in bits and pieces .
Karma is waiting,folks .
Ride, Mutha, Ride ! Dont forget the peanuts and a towel.
And friggin ride it like you stole it!

I love you, man, Uli

Thats

The 2 words I dread to use. The 2 words you hate to hear. Lets hope the New
Year brings us a lot less of having to hide behind it. I only say that because most
times you hear thats normal either the person doesnt know what theyre talking
about or cannot properly explain what youre experiencing. That does not mean a person who says it is
incompetent, they just may not have the skills to communicate their knowledge as well as others.

ith the massive range of

types of riders there will
always be those who
enjoy, but do not ride often enough,
or do not take the time to educate
themselves on what exactly it is they
are riding. There are just as many types
of motorcycles as there are riders.
As iconic and popular as the
Harley-Davidson brand is, there are
some who love, yet know very little
about what they love. These beautiful
machines in particular are constantly
evolving, what was reason for concern in 2006 model is
perfectly acceptable in 2008.
For example, the condition now identified as Big Twin
Neutral Rattle. It addresses the rattle heard on the right side
by the transmission side cover that may occur when a 2007
and later big twin power train is in neutral.
To better understand the condition you must first
understand the concept of tolerance stack-up. During normal
manufacturing processes, operating tolerances need to be
established in the engineering and conceptualizing phase of
producing new mechanical parts. No matter how precisely a
part is machined, it will have a range of acceptable variance
that still allows it to function to its designed intent.
Now, knowing that parts have this plus or minus
intentionally figured into the equation, you have understand
that in mass producing these items there will be times when
all of the parts that are collected for an assembly may be
either on the high side or low side of the tolerances.
Someone at the factory can be assembling a new
transmission and, completely by coincidence and with no
knowledge or intent, collect parts for it that all happen to be
machined to the higher side of their individual tolerances. This
will create a finished product that is very tight compared to
one that has the usual configuration of mixed tolerances. It
results in a transmission that may whine a bit louder at certain
speeds or RPMs, but is in no way problematic or requiring
repair. This is also what is meant when they say Harley
Davidsons have their own unique individual characteristics.
Its a big part of what makes each one special. You can take 2
identical motorcycles assembled by the same person, with the
same tools, same parts, same year, even the same color, and

50 Bikes & Beauties January 2013

they will sound and operate completely

different.
Neutral rattle occurs when the parts
used to make the transmission all fall on
the low side of the individual tolerances
of each part. To quote
the motor companys
service bulletin.To verify the
sound is neutral rattle,
pull in the clutch lever
and hold it for 10 to 15
seconds. If the sound
stops, it is neutral rattle.
Neutral rattle is caused
by
the
necessary
backlash within the
first gear pair. Backlash is a combination of gear tooth pitch,
relative location of the support bearings to each other, along
with many other factors. Even though all of the components
are within specification, slight variances result in tolerance
stack-up. Tolerance stack up is the adding and subtracting of
all of the tolerances between the parts as they relate to the
total backlash of the gear train. This stack up can result in a
gear mesh that is tight-fitting or loose-fitting. If the stack up
is toward the loose side, clearance between the teeth of the
gears allows them to clack together and cause the sound.
Keep this in mind when youre comparing the sounds
and performance of your motorcycle against another. Yes
it is possible to have normal sounds that youre never
experienced in seemingly identical vehicles.
Knowledge, research and information are some of
my favorite ways to build confidence in the brand weve all
come to love. I dont have all of the answers but I feverishly
seek them out and look for every opportunity to share them
with you.
I will always look to avoid using the words thats normal.
You didnt bring the bike in because everything is normal.
Youre experiencing a condition that is different from what
youre accustomed to and need a legitimate repair or at a
minimum a clear, precise explanation of how the condition
came to be.
Hope you have an amazing New Year and, as always,
ride safe!

The Five Deadly Sins

that can Wreck Your Injury Claim

(Continued from last issue)

Hiding Other Injuries

ou must be up-front and honest with your attorney about any injuries that occurred
before or after an accident. Again, if you saw a doctor or other health care provider,
there is a record that the insurance company will find. Your lawyer can deal with this
if he or she knows about it. If you lie about it and the insurance company finds out, then your
case is over.
Remember: there is no privacy in America today. When you make an insurance claim, your
life becomes an open book. If your doctor keeps two sets of records because he or she has
been treating you for years and you dont make sure that we get all the records, well fire you.
Simple as that.

Not Having Accurate

Tax Returns

n almost every case, a claimant will have

lost income because of the accident. You
will be able to claim lost income only if
youre past tax returns are pristine. You dont
want to risk going to jail by claiming a loss of
income only to have your past tax returns not
back up your claim. Again, being honest with
your attorney is the only way to be because it
can be dealt with if he or she knows about it.
Be aware that you will most certainly be
required to produce your tax returns if you file
a lawsuit and claim lost wages. If you are a liar
and a cheat, this will come back to haunt you
in your injury case, and I dont want my name
associated with liars and cheats.

Misrepresenting Your
Activity Level

nsurance companies routinely hire private

investigators to conduct videotaped surveillance.
They also troll YouTube and other social networking
sites or Google you. If you claim that you cannot run,
climb, or stoop and you get caught on videotape doing
any of those activities, or if you brag about your break
dancing abilities on the Internet, you can forget about
your claim.
There is no explanation (other than You got my
brothernot me!) that can overcome the eye of the
camera. One of our former clients claiming a back injury
got caught on his roof repairing shingles. That didnt look
too good, and I fired him as a client when I found out.

Australian court: Workers comp

covers sex mishap

1. At - 40 degrees Centigrade a person loses about 14.4 calories per

hour by breathing.

BY ROD MCGUIRK ASSOCIATED PRESS CANBERRA, Australia --

An Australian court has ruled that a bureaucrat who was

injured while having sex on a business trip is eligible for
workers compensation benefits.
The Full Bench of the Federal Court ruled Dec. 13 in favor
of the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons,
and rejecting the appeal of the federal governments insurer.
The woman was hospitalized after being injured in 2007
during sex with a male friend while staying in a motel in
the town of Nowra, 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of her
hometown of Sydney.
During the sex, a glass light fitting was torn from its
mount above the bed and landed on her face, injuring her
nose and mouth. She later suffered depression and was
unable to continue working for the government.
Her claim for workers compensation for her physical and
psychological injuries was initially approved by government
insurer Comcare, then rejected after further investigation.
An administrative tribunal agreed with Comcare that her
injuries were not suffered in the course of her employment,
saying the government had not induced or encouraged the
womans sexual conduct. The tribunal also found the sex
was not an ordinary incident of an overnight stay such as
showering, sleeping and eating.
That ruling was overturned in the Federal Court in 2012,
when Judge John Nicholas rejected the tribunals findings
that the sex had to be condoned by the government if she
were to qualify for compensation.
If the applicant had been injured while playing a
game of cards in her motel room, she would be entitled
to compensation even though it could not be said that her
employer induced her to engage in such activity, Nicholas
wrote in his judgment in favor of the woman receiving
compensation.
In the Full Bench decision upholding Nicholas decision,
Judges Patrick Keane, Robert Buchanan and Mordy
Bromberg agreed last week that the governments views on
the woman having sex in her motel room were irrelevant.
No approval, express or implied, of the respondents
conduct was required, they said.
It is not yet clear how much compensation the woman
will receive. She was in her 30s at the time of the accident.
Comcare was on Monday considering an appeal to
the High Court, Australias highest legal authority, Comcare
spokesman Russ Street said.
The issue is a significant one, Street said in a
statement. Workers need to be clear about their entitlements
and employers should have an understanding of their
responsibilities and how to support their staff.
