HEAVY MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (HMEO)

One Full-time Vacancy (40 hrs/wk) M F 1st Shift


Grade 5; Hourly Wage Range: $14.44 - $18.28

DEFINITION:
Skilled manual work in the operation of heavy motor equipment on DPW projects; all other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Heavy Motor Equipment Operators perform some or all of the following General Functions, as well as the function specific to
the division to which they are assigned.
General Functions
Operates a variety of light and heavy motor equipment, including riding lawn mowers, dump trucks, snow plows, and
associated power and hand tools; performs minor maintenance on equipment; digs holes by hand. In the winter, removes snow
and ice by plowing, sanding, and salting roads and sidewalks; also patches potholes and cuts highway brush. May be assigned
to other divisions on an as-needed basis or in an emergency.
Parks and Cemetery Division: (a subdivision of Highway Division)
Digs graves and maintains the cemetery grounds; plans and measures new grave lots; builds foundations for monuments;
plants flowers; mows lawns, trims shrubs, and prunes trees; spreads fertilizer, lime, and grass seed; rakes leaves; straightens
tipped gravestones and fills in sunken graves; grades cemetery roads and paths by hand.
Maintains the town's parks and recreational facilities and grounds, including school grounds; mows and trims fields; rakes
leaves; maintains irrigation systems; lines and readies fields for various sports; maintains fieldhouses and bathrooms.
Maintains Parks and Recreation Division equipment (greases it and changes oil and filters); records all equipment
maintenance. Performs small construction projects and renovations on various fields; builds fences, constructs volleyball
courts, and spreads loam and grass seeds. In the winter, maintains bleachers, benches and performs indoor fieldhouse
renovations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalency, in addition to the following:
For Parks/Cemetery Division: one year experience in cemetery operations and maintenance, or one year experience in the
operation of heavy equipment and maintenance of recreational facilities and grounds.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:
Working knowledge of the operation of light and heavy motor equipment used in construction, maintenance, and repair;
knowledge of hazard and safety precautions involved in operating heavy motor equipment.
Parks/Recreation Division: For parks and cemetery work, working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of
cemetery operations and maintenance and interments, or working knowledge of the maintenance of parks and recreation
facilities and grounds.
Licenses: Requires Massachusetts Commercial Driver's license, Class B, with Air Brake Endorsement and a Massachusetts
Hoisting Engineers License 2B.
Residency within 15 miles of the physical boundaries of the City of Northampton is desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Moderate to heavy physical effort generally required. Eyesight and hearing at or correctable to "normal ranges."
