Ticket guide for trains, trams

and buses
Melbourne is progressively moving to a new ticketing system
called myki. While this is happening you may notice two types
of ticketing equipment operating across the train, tram and
bus networks.
The myki and Metcard systems will operate in parallel for a
period, so you will be able to use either a myki or a Metcard if you
are travelling in Zones 1 and/or 2. During this time the number
of myki sales and top up outlets will gradually increase, while the
number of Metcard sales outlets will gradually decrease.
myki is already operating on bus services in Geelong, Ballarat,
Bendigo, Seymour, Warragul and the Latrobe Valley, and will be
installed on V/Line services in 2010.
This Fares and Travel Guide focuses on Metcard information.

Melbournes fares and zones

Zones
Most Metcard fares are based on two zones, which can be seen
on the network maps (see inside back cover).
For your journey, the ticket you have needs to be valid for the
zone/s you will be travelling in.
For example, travelling from Frankston to the city requires a Zone
1 + 2 ticket, Clayton to Cranbourne requires a Zone 2 ticket and
Prahran to the city requires a Zone 1 ticket.
When travelling in a zone where boundaries overlap, the ticket
only needs to be valid for one of the zones. Look on the network
maps at the back of this brochure to see where the yellow and
blue lines overlap.
Zone 1
Zone 1 includes Melbourne and surrounding inner suburbs
including Carlton, Footscray, North Melbourne, Prahran, Preston,
Richmond, South Melbourne and St Kilda.
Zone 2
Zone 2 includes the area surrounding Zone 1 and extends
out in all directions including Box Hill, Clayton, Craigieburn,
Cranbourne, Dandenong, Frankston, Greensborough, Hastings,
Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Melton, St Albans, Sunbury, Warrandyte
and Werribee.

City Saver
City Saver Metcards are designed for travel around the city centre
as well as to key Melbourne landmarks. You can use a City Saver
Metcard for a single trip on a train, tram or bus travelling within
the City Saver area, as shown on the map at the back of this
guide. The City Saver Metcard can only be used for journeys
within the City Saver boundary and is not transferable between
train, tram and bus.
See page 8 for ticket availability.
Remember, the City Saver area is located in Zone 1 so a Zone 1
ticket may be appropriate for your journey.

Ticket machines
When using public transport you will now see two types of ticket
machines. Metcard and myki machines are clearly labelled.
When buying a Metcard from a Metcard ticket machine follow
these steps:
Step 1 Select the type of Metcard.
Step 2 Select the zone(s) that you are travelling in.
Step 3 Select the fare either full fare or concession (to buy
a concession fare you must be eligible see page 14 for more
information).
Step 4 Insert money. Machines on trams only accept coins.
The larger Metcard ticket machines at train stations do accept
notes but will only give change up to $10. EFTPOS facilities are
available at the larger Metcard machines at train stations.
During the move to myki, Metcard ticketing machines will be
progressively removed from stations, trams and buses. Places
that you used to buy Metcards from may no longer stock them
or Metcard ticket selection may be limited.

Validating your Metcard

Always validate your Metcard before entering and leaving a train
platform and each time you board a tram or bus.
During the move to myki, Metcard validators will be available at
every train station and on board trams and buses. Customers
travelling on a Metcard can only use Metcard validators to
validate their ticket.
You must travel with a valid ticket. Failure to do so could lead to
a fine.
Remember when travelling on a Metcard:
The arrow on your Metcard shows which way to insert into
the validator.
Always check the expiry details printed on the back of your
Metcard after validation.
A Metcard purchased from a tram ticket machine is
automatically validated for that journey only.

Monthly or Yearly Metcards
Monthly or Yearly Metcards allow for unlimited train, tram and bus
travel for one month or one year within selected zones. Monthly
and Yearly Metcards can be used for weekend travel across
Zones 1 and 2 irrespective of the selected zone on tickets.
Off-Peak Daily (Zone 1 + 2) Metcards
Off-Peak Daily (Zone 1 + 2) Metcards are only available for sale
in Zone 2 and are valid on all trains, trams and buses in Zones 1
and 2 after 9am on weekdays (not valid on Saturday, Sunday or
public holidays).
5 Weekend Daily Metcards
5 Weekend Daily Metcards allow five days of travel on either
Saturdays or Sundays for $15 ($3 per day). An adult passenger
travelling around Zones 1 and 2 on Saturday can save more than
70 per cent by switching from a Daily Metcard to a 5 Weekend
Daily Metcard.
Extension Metcards
Passengers must have a single valid Metcard for their entire
journey.
Exceptions to this are Yearly, Monthly and Weekly Metcard
holders, who can buy a 2 hour or Daily Metcard for an additional
zone to travel beyond the selected zone on their Metcard. The
extension Metcard must be validated at the first opportunity.
Sunday Saver Metcards
Sunday Saver Metcards allow unlimited train, tram and bus
travel across Zones 1 and 2 on Sundays. Plan ahead and buy
your Sunday Saver Metcard in advance and pay just $3.10 for
all day travel across Zones 1 and 2. This Metcard is great value
compared to the cost of an adult Zone 1 + 2 Daily Metcard which
costs $10.60.

Seniors Daily Metcards

Seniors Daily Metcards are available to Seniors Card holders
from any Australian state or territory and can be used for travel
all day on trains, trams and buses across Zones 1 and 2. The
5 Seniors Daily Metcard includes five individual Seniors Daily
Metcards on a single Metcard at a discounted price. It can only
be used by one person at a time.
If you are travelling in Zone 1: Buy a Zone 1, 5 Daily
Concession Metcard it is cheaper than using a 5 Seniors
Daily Metcard.
If you are travelling in Zone 2: Buy a Zone 2, 5 Daily
Concession Metcard it is cheaper than using a 5 Seniors
Daily Metcard.
If you are travelling in Zones 1 + 2: Buy a 5 Seniors
Daily Metcard.
Sunday Pass
The Sunday Pass provides free travel on trains, trams and
buses travelling within Zones 1 and 2 on Sundays. It is also
valid for travel on town buses within the Ballarat, Bendigo and
Geelong transit systems and town bus services in Mildura
and Warrnambool.
The Sunday Pass is available to Victorians who receive a
Disability Support Pension or Carer Payment, or are Victorian
Seniors Card holders. The pass expires one year from the day
it was first validated.
Application forms are available at any Premium Station, staffed
V/Line station, the MetShop, Metcard retail outlets or you can
download a form from metlinkmelbourne.com.au
10 Early Bird Metcards
10 Early Bird Metcards allow free morning metropolitan train
travel on Metro services. The 10 Early Bird Metcard is valid
for travel across Zone 1 and 2 and entitles the holder to 10 free
trips completed before 7am on weekdays. Passengers must
validate their Early Bird Metcard before commencing each
journey. For your return journey, it is recommended you travel
on a 10 x 2 hour Metcard.
Victorian Student Passes
Primary and secondary school students who hold a Victorian
Public Transport Student Concession Card can also buy a Yearly
or Half-Yearly Victorian Student Pass for unlimited travel on all
trains, trams and buses across Victoria. See page 8 for where
to buy a student pass. See page 15 to see how to apply for a
Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card.

Fare refunds and replacements

Under certain conditions, refunds or replacements are available
for damaged or defective Metcards.
A Metcard Refund Application Form needs to be submitted
and an administration fee may be charged. With the exception
of Yearly Metcards or student passes, lost tickets will not
be replaced.
For refund application forms and information, enquire at Premium
Stations, the MetShop, the Metcard Helpline on 1800 652 313
or download a form from metlinkmelbourne.com.au
For ticket and equipment malfunctions, call the Metcard Helpline
on 1800 652 313 or notify customer service staff.
If a 10 2 hour, 5 Daily, 5 Weekend Daily or 5 Seniors Daily
Metcard is defective, it can be exchanged at the ticket window
of any Premium Station or the MetShop provided the outlet still
stocks Metcards. If no trips have been used, the ticket will be
replaced. If the ticket has been used, then individual 2 hour, Daily,
Sunday Saver or Seniors Daily Metcards will be provided for any
unused periods on the ticket.
If a Metcard is visually damaged it will need to be submitted with
a Metcard Refund Application Form. You can download a form
from metlinkmelbourne.com.au or call 131 638.
During the move to myki, you are encouraged to use up any
Metcards you still have.

Concession and Companion cards

Concession cards
Children aged three years and under travel free on all services.
You can travel on a concession fare if you are aged 16 years or
younger or carry an approved concession card outlined below.
A valid concession card must be carried at all times when
travelling on a concession ticket and be produced on request.
Failure to do so can result in a fine.
Concession entitlements when travelling on Metcard and myki
are the same.

Health Care Cards
Holders of a Health Care Card with a Victorian address can
travel on concession fares. Dependents named on the card
cannot travel on concession fares unless they are aged 16 years
or younger or if they have a valid concession card in their own
name. Dependants listed on Health Care Cards may be able to
apply to Centrelink to have a Health Care Card issued in their
own name.

Australian Pensioner Concession Cards
Holders of a current Pensioner Concession Card from any state
or territory can buy concession fares. Pensioner Concession
Card holders from Victoria who receive a Disability Support
Pension (DSP code on the back of the card) or a Carer Payment
(CAR code on the back of the card) can apply for a Sunday
Pass that entitles the holder to free Sunday travel in Zone 1
and 2 and town buses in selected regional cities. See page 15
for information.
Seniors Cards
Victorian Seniors Card holders can travel on concession fares,
buy Seniors Daily or 5 x Seniors Daily Metcards, or purchase a
seniors myki. Seniors Card holders with cards issued by other
Australian state or territory governments can travel on concession
fares, buy Seniors Daily or 5 x Seniors Daily Metcards, or
purchase a concession myki. A Commonwealth Seniors Health
Card cannot be used as concession ID.

Sunday Pass
The Sunday Pass provides free travel on Sundays in Zone 1 and
2 and town buses in selected regional areas for Victorian Seniors
Card holders and Victorians who receive a Disability Support
Pension or a Carer Payment. When travelling on a seniors myki,
the Sunday Pass is already embedded in the myki.

Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card
Primary or Secondary Victorian Public Transport Student
Concession Card students aged 16 years and under can travel
on concession fares without a concession card.
Only holders of a Primary or Secondary Victorian Public
Transport (VPT) Student Concession Card can buy a Half Yearly
or Yearly Victorian Student Pass.
Concession fares are available to secondary students aged
17 years and over who hold a Secondary VPT Student
Concession Card.
Tertiary Victorian Public Transport Student Concession
Card Tertiary students who comply with the eligibility criteria
and are enrolled full-time in a course listed in the Approved
Courses in Tertiary Institutions Register are eligible for a
Tertiary VPT Student Concession Card. To view the register
visit metlinkmelbourne.com.au. Tertiary students can buy a
Half Yearly or Yearly Tertiary VPT Student Concession Card,
depending on the length of their course.
Students with a Victorian Health Care Card do not need to
have a VPT Student Concession Card to buy concession fares.
A school or tertiary institution identification card does not entitle
a student to buy concession fares. VPT Student Concession
Cards are generally only available to Australian citizens and
permanent residents.
Victorian Public Transport Student Concession Card Application
Forms are available from Premium Stations, the MetShop
(corner of Swanston and Little Collins streets), selected bus
depots, your school/university administration office, from
metlinkmelbourne.com.au or call 131 638. Application forms
are not available from tram depots.

Companion cards
This card is issued by the Department of Planning and
Community Development to people who require the assistance
of a companion. It provides free travel for the carer companion
of the cardholder on all public transport services.
Persons travelling as a carer companion to a Companion Card
holder must be able to provide all necessary assistance to the
cardholder. Companions who are not capable of assisting the
cardholder must pay the appropriate fare for the journey.

Metlinks online journey planner helps you plan a journey on
public transport.

Metlink mobile departure board

Metlinks mobile departure board gives mobile phone users train,
tram and bus departure times straight to their phone.
The mobile departure board uses reliable and up-to-date
timetable information direct from Metlinks online journey planner.

Train SMS updates
From Monday to Friday 6am 8pm Metro provides instant text
messaging to mobile phones with up-to-the-minute information
on any train that is more than 15 minutes off schedule. Go to
metrotrains.com.au and sign up at Platform 1 receive your free
SMS Updates.
Train SMS timetables
Train SMS timetable service allows specific up-to-date train
timetables to be sent to your mobile. You can find out what time
a train is coming, no matter where you are or where youre going.
The service is available for all 15 suburban train lines and the
maximum youll pay is 55 cents (incl. GST) per SMS.

tramTRACKER from Yarra Trams provides real-time tram arrival

Hours of operation
Train and tram services normally operate 5am midnight Monday
to Saturday, with extended hours to around 1.30am on Friday and
Saturday nights. On Sunday, trains and trams operate 7am 11pm.
Many of Melbournes bus routes have been upgraded and run
6am 9pm Monday to Friday, 8am 9pm Saturday and
9am 9pm Sunday.
NightRider buses run 1.30am 4.30am on Saturday and
between 1.30am 5.30am on Sunday mornings.

NightRider buses
NightRider buses are a safe, easy and inexpensive way of getting
to your destination and home again on a Saturday or Sunday
morning.
NightRider buses travel from the city to the suburbs in the early
hours, departing Swanston Street (between Collins and Flinders
streets) every 30 minutes from 1.30am 4.30am on Saturday and
between 1.30am 5.30am on Sunday mornings.
You can also catch NightRider buses from city venues including
Crown Entertainment Complex and Docklands to connect with
services departing from Swanston Street or at a NightRider bus
stop along one of its routes. With more than 450 stops, there are
plenty of opportunities to jump on and off a NightRider bus.
Buses go to Bayswater, Belgrave, Craigieburn, Cranbourne,
Croydon, Dandenong, Doncaster, Eltham, Epping, Frankston,
Healesville, Lilydale, Melton, Mornington, Rosebud, St Albans,
Sunbury and Werribee.
Normal ticket fares apply. A Daily or a 2 hour Metcard validated
after 6pm can be used until 3am.
NightRider buses have public phones on board so you can call a
taxi to meet you at your bus stop, or for $1 you can call a friend to

Catch the tram at any of the specially marked stops on Flinders
Street, Harbour Esplanade, Docklands Drive, La Trobe Street or
Spring Street.
The City Circle route uses Melbournes iconic W-Class trams
offering passengers a historical tram experience, while automated
audio commentary announces points of interest along the route.
The City Circle Tram operates approximately every 12 minutes
between 10am 6pm Sunday to Wednesday, and 10am 9pm
Thursday to Saturday.
City Circle trams run every day of the year except Christmas Day
and Good Friday.

Melbourne Airport City
SkyBus
SkyBus runs between Melbourne Airport and Melbournes city
centre, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service runs
every 10 minutes and takes approximately 20 minutes to get from
the airport to the city centre.
At Melbourne Airport, SkyBus stops at the South/Virgin Blue
terminal and the Qantas domestic terminal. In the city, SkyBus
stops at the coach terminal at Southern Cross Station, corner
Little Bourke and Spencer streets. Mini-buses run between
Southern Cross Station and 120 hotels in central Melbourne.
You can buy SkyBus tickets from the driver, at ticket kiosks in the
airport terminals, the MetShop or online. V/Line tickets, free travel
passes and concessions are not accepted by SkyBus.

Avalon Airport City
Avalon Airport Transfers
The Avalon Airport Transfers runs between Avalon Airport and
the Melbourne central business district. City stops are located at
Southern Cross Station coach terminal, corner Little Bourke and
Spencer streets (Firefly Coaches sales booth) and outside Hotel
Bakpak at 167 Franklin Street. Buy tickets at the service counter
at either location. If pre-booked at least 48 hours in advance,
buses will pick up at CBD hotels.
Services also operate to hotel and accommodation venues up
to six kilometres from Melbournes CBD, and from Werribee RSL
in Synott Street. Metcards are not valid on the Avalon Airport
Transfers services.

Metro Trains Melbourne
Metro is the name of Melbournes new metropolitan train
service offering safe and efficient transport to around 400,000
Melburnians every day. The core of Metros offering is to get the
basics right and deliver a service that gets you where you need
to go, on time and safely.
Yarra Trams
Yarra Trams is the name of Melbournes tram network run by Keolis
Downer EDI Rail. Melbourne has the biggest tram network in the
world, with 249 kilometres of double track and 27 major routes.

Bus
The Melbourne bus network comprises of 39 bus operators
which run over 300 routes taking people across Melbourne,
including to schools, hospitals, major shopping centres and
leisure and sporting activities.
In regional Victoria there are 94 bus operators running services
in and around regional towns.
V/Line
V/Line is Victorias largest regional transport operator and
provides regional communities with rail and coach services.
Every week V/Line operates over 1400 rail services and almost
600 coach services throughout Victoria and interstate. Higher
frequency services operate to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo,
Seymour and Traralgon.

Authorised Officers
Authorised Officers are employed by public transport operators
to improve customer safety, provide customer information, help
during special events and ensure passengers are travelling with
a valid ticket.
Authorised Officers have the authority to:
ask to see your ticket (and concession identification where
appropriate), even when you have left the vehicle or a paid
area of a station
ask for your name and address if they believe an offence
has occurred
ask to see evidence which confirms your identity
arrest you until satisfied evidence confirms your name
and address
arrest you until the police arrive if you refuse to comply
confiscate tickets for use as evidence.*
* The above represents just some of the powers of Authorised Officers.
The powers are exercised under and subject to the Transport Act 1983.
Any information obtained in the exercise of these powers is collated,
retained and used in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2000
and the Transport Act 1983.

It is important to note that Authorised Officers do not issue

infringement notices or fines to passengers. Instead, they
provide a report of the situation to the Department of Transport.
The Department of Transport then determines whether the
matter should be progressed and an infringement notice (fine)
issued. The money from the fine goes directly to the Victorian
Government except for a small administration fee which is paid to
the operator to help offset the costs of enforcement.

If you feel you have been treated unfairly by an Authorised Officer
you can contact the relevant operator with your feedback.
However, please understand that reported matters will not be
withdrawn simply because you are annoyed or angry about
being reported.

Travelling conditions
Passengers may incur infringements for the following behaviours
on public transport:
placing feet on seats
consuming alcohol
indecent language
forcing doors
littering
smoking.
Please note: There is no smoking on trains, trams, buses or under
covered areas of train platforms, tram shelters or bus shelters.
Travelling with shopping jeeps and golf buggies
Shopping jeeps can be carried free on public transport services at
all times. Supermarket trolleys are not permitted. Golf buggies and
similar items can be carried for free on trains, trams and buses
provided the comfort, access and safety of other passengers is
not affected.
Bikes and surfboards
Surfboards are not permitted on trams, buses or regional
town services.
Bikes and surfboards can be carried free on metropolitan
trains, but customers are requested to avoid heavily congested
carriages or services. Bikes and surfboards must not obstruct
passageways or doorways, or inconvenience passengers.
Passengers with bikes and surfboards must not board at the first
door of the first carriage at any time, as this area is reserved for
passengers with wheelchairs.
Some train stations and major transport interchanges have bike
lockers or bike cages which can be used to store bikes and
related equipment such as helmets and safety vests. For more

Folding bikes
Passengers can carry folding bikes free on all forms of public
transport including trains, trams and buses in metropolitan and
regional Victoria.
Folding bikes can be carried on public transport provided
they are folded and stowed in a bag that does not exceed the
dimensions of 82cm long 69cm high 39cm wide, 51cm rims.
They should not be placed on seats.
Folding bikes must not obstruct doorways or inconvenience
other passengers. On metropolitan buses, folding bikes cannot
be stored in parcel racks. On V/Line trains and coaches, folding
bikes cannot be stored in overhead luggage racks or parcel racks
and must not obstruct walkways.
Travelling with pets
Guide dogs, hearing guide dogs, guide dogs in training and
animals with an Assistance Animal Pass can travel for free on all
public transport services.
Dogs on leads are permitted on metropolitan trains, but only
if they are muzzled. Small animals can travel on metropolitan
trains, trams and buses, but they must be in a suitable container.
Animals are not permitted to travel on V/Line train and coach
services with the exception of guide dogs, hearing guide dogs,
guide dogs in training and animals with an Assistance Animal Pass.
The Assistance Animal Pass has been developed to help people
with an ongoing disability (including issues relating to ageing and
psychiatric illness) who are unable to use public transport without

Accessibility
Public transport services in Victoria are progressively being made
accessible to people with special needs, so all members of the
community can access train, tram and bus services. A number of
programs and initiatives are underway to achieve this goal.

Accessible trains
All metropolitan trains are wheelchair-accessible via a manual
ramp deployed by the driver from the front carriage. Passengers
who need help boarding trains should wait on the platform near
the front of the train. On a metropolitan platform, this is marked
with a yellow or white rectangle on the platform. When you reach
your destination station, the driver will use a ramp to assist you
off the train.
All metropolitan train stations are wheelchair-accessible and
Premium Stations have wheelchair-accessible toilets.
Accessible trams
Low floor trams and platform stops are being introduced
across the network. Low floor trams have allocated spaces for
passengers using wheelchairs or mobility aids.
This area is inside the double-door marked with a wheelchair
symbol. Some low floor trams have buttons that alert the driver to
activate the bridging plate to bridge the gap between the tram
and the platform.
Accessible buses
More wheelchair accessible buses are being introduced across
the entire Melbourne network, including the SkyBus and
NightRider services. SmartBus vehicles are able to meet the bus
stop at the same level and eliminate a step to board the bus.
