Dont pack away that shovel and

trowel. Fall is a great time to plant a
few new additions in the landscape.
Here are just a few ideas for adding
immediate and long term beauty to
your garden.
Add cool season annuals like pansies, snapdragons, ornamental kale and
stocks to brighten the fall garden.
Those in milder regions will enjoy them
throughout the winter. Consider adding
cold hardy pansies. They provide color
in the fall garden, survive most winters,
and are back blooming in the spring
just as the snow melts.
Fall is also a good time to plant
perennials, trees and shrubs. The soil is
warm and the air cooler, so the plants
are less stressed and establish more
quickly. Select plants suited to the
growing conditions and be sure to give
them plenty of room to reach their
mature size.
Plant trees so the root flare, the
place where the roots curve away from
the trunk, is even with the soil surface.
Dig a hole, the same depth as the rootball, and two to five times wider.

Free public tours at the new recycling facility

Residents are invited to tour the
newly
opened
City
of
Milwaukee/Waukesha County Materials
Recovery Facility (MRF) located at 1401
W. Mt. Vernon Ave., Milwaukee on
Saturday, September 19 from 10 a.m.
3 p.m. during Doors Open Milwaukee,
an event that opens doors to the public
for tours to over 150 buildings in the
Milwaukee area at no charge.
This publicly-owned, single sort
recycling facility is a partnership
between Waukesha County and the City
of Milwaukee that is privately operated
by ReCommunity Recycling. Due to
strong household recycling participation, the Waukesha County recycling
program has been able to return over
$13 million in dividends to tax payers
in partner communities since 2001.
Waukesha County anticipates that single sort recycling will increase recycling
rates for continued program success to

Similarly, the City of Milwaukees recycling program revenues have averaged
$1.5 million per year since 2004 and
have off-set over $16 million in residential recycling collection costs over
that time.
The new MRF began operating in
March which is now sorting and processing recyclables from approximately
270,000 households served by single
sort recycling programs in the 25 participating Waukesha County communities
and the City of Milwaukee. The MRF is
designed to process 35 tons per hour or
60,000 tons per year of recyclables.
Visitors can take a self-directed tour
at their own pace to view the state-ofthe-art equipment and learn the process
of single sort recycling. While the
equipment will not be operating, visitors can still get an up-close look at the
tip floor, the pre-sort cabins, paper and

cardboard screens, balers, optical sort

machines, sorter platforms, and finished bales ready for shipment to secondary processors or industries such as
paper mills. Through a cooperative
effort, staff from Waukesha County, the

1. Heating & Ventilation - Examine

your fireplace and chimney system to
ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the
furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter
and hire a professional to inspect the unit
more thoroughly. These steps will improve
the efficiency and life of your furnace and
will ensure stable indoor air quality.
2. Seal Windows and Doors - If not
properly sealed, windows and doors can
be a major culprit for heat loss. To keep
the warm air inside, inspect the weatherstripping around your home's windows
and doors for leaks, rot or decay. Repair or
replace structural framing, and caulk
inside and out, if necessary.
3. Insulate well - One of the easiest

and most effective defenses against heat

loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold
drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which,
when left exposed, can make your furnace
work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant
product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation
makes installation simple. All that's needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut
the batt to fit the cavity and press into
place. The insulation will help improve
energy efficiency as soon as it's in place
and provide savings over the lifetime of
your home. Comfortbatt can also be used
to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim
for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.
4. Backyard Care - Save your property

from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent iceladen branches from thrashing against
electrical wires and your home's exterior.
Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and
sprinkler systems to prevent freezing.
Ensure rain or snow drains away from the
house to avoid foundation problems.
5. Roof and Gutters - Inspect your roof
for shingles that are warped, damaged or
even missing to prevent a future leak. Use
roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal
joints where water could penetrate, such
as around the chimney, skylights or vent
pipes. Make sure that your gutters and
downspouts are securely fastened.
Downspouts should extend at least five
feet away from the home to prevent flooding.

Those tired of battling the animals
may want to plant resistant bulbs such
as daffodils, hyacinths, Fritillaria, alliums, Camassia, glory-of-the snow, snow
drops, squills, and grape hyacinths. You
may find it is easier to avoid the problem than battle the animals with repellents and scare tactics.
Plant a few short season vegetables

in your garden for fresh-from-the garden flavor this fall. Simply count the
days from planting to the average first
fall frost to determine how many growing days are left in your area. Select
vegetables that will mature and can be
harvested in that amount of time. Leaf
lettuce, spinach, mustard greens,
radishes and carrots are fast growing,
cool weather tolerant vegetables that
make great additions to the fall garden
and your dinner plate.
Get these vegetables off to a good
start with a side dressing of low nitrogen fertilizer. Incorporate it into the

soil prior to planting or sprinkle a narrow band along the row of plants. This
organic nitrogen will provide needed
nutrients without damaging the tender
seedlings.
Extend the harvest season with the
help of floating row covers. These fabrics allow air, light and water through
while trapping the heat around the
plants. No construction is needed; just
loosely cover the plants with the fabric,
secure the edges with pipes, boards or
landscape staples and let the plants
provide the support.
