CHAPTER 1: PERSONALITY
Question 1: How do you like your personality?
- Postive person: attentive, considerate, courageous, friendly, generous,
optimistic, organized, responsible, sincere, understanding
- Negative personality: aggressive, arrogant, bossy, cowardly, dishonest,
irresponsible, pessimistic.
Question 2: How have your parents influenced you in term of personality?
- mainly determined by how parents treat their children, have a great impact
on, form ones personality, feel loved/secure and valued/frightened.
Question 3: Do you contact people whose personality is totally different from
yours?
- DIfferent personality, respect the difference, have something in common,
have personalities opposite from mine.
Questions 4: What are the main factors that contribute to shaping ones
personality?
- happy/unhappy childhood, home environment, teachers and friends, general
physical and mental health, timely corrective measures taken by parents and
teachers.
Question 5: When you hire someone for a job, will you care to look at his
personality?
Specific insight into an individuals personality, employees strengths/
potential/motivation, understanding the job requirements, fit/suitable for the
job/the team/the organization, cooperate with colleagues.
CHAPTER 2: FAMILY
Question 1: What are the disadvantages of living in an extended family?

a place to return to, the place where one can find joy and happiness, feel
safe and warm, a parent is a childs first teacher.
Question 4: Has womens role in family changed greatly?
traditional concept of women as homemakers, traditional roles: men
retain as family decision makers, women do housework and take care of the
children, status of women has changed, men no longer the sole
breadwinners, both husbands and wives jointly share family financial
burden.
Question 5: What responsibilities do children have toward their
parents?
Obey parents, respect or honor them, love them, follow their instructions,
take care of them, provide them in sickness and old age, do not speak evil of
them.

Q1: What makes a place attractive: people, food, weather, or scenery?
a wide range of activities, local/native culture, friendly/helpful, tasty food, nice
weather, beautiful scenery (mountainous cities, rice fields, long coasts)
Q2: What is your feeling when you see old architecture and historical
buildings disappearing rapidly?
sad, historical heritage, losing a piece of history
Q4: What sort of places will be of interest to people in the future?
beauty of nature, countryside, close to nature, full of fresh air.
Q5: What do you think could be done to make museums more enjoyable?
changing the interior, appropriate colour of the walls, arrangement of exhibits.
CHAPTER 6: TRANSPORT
Q1: Tell me about the advantages and disadvantages of public transportation.
Advantages: good for the environment, low cost/ much cheaper than private
transportation, better accessibility, not to worry about parking, more comfortable
(relax, read something while riding)
Disadvantages: walk some distance to our home or office, no privacy, crowded,
noisy, no personal space.
Q2: Do you think getting to work is easier or more difficult than it used to be?
easier, more public transportation, not transfer much, more bus lines.

Q3: What do you think the consequenes of global warming will be?
global warming affects:
- Weather: warmer temperatures could increase the probability of drought.
lead to heavier rainfall in some areas.
- Health: Global warming could increase smog pollution in some areas.
- Ecosystem: disrupt ecosystens, pushing species that cannot adapt to
extinction.
- Sea level rising: Rising global temperatures will speed the melting of
flaciers and ice caps.
Q4: What are the advantages and disadvantages of having nuclear power
stations?
Advantages:
- Not require expensive fuel (a large amount of energy is generated from a
very small amount of fuel)
- Not produce hazardous gases (Nuclear power does not produce carbon
dioxide or sulfur dioxide)
- Not be a threat to ecosystem (Nuclear power stations do not contribute to
global warming or acid rain)
Disadvantages:
- Disposing the waste (poisonous waste is produced, highly radioactive;
careless disposal of waste => pollution of land, rivers and the ocean)
- Very expensive to build power stations
Q5: What can we do to stop people from wasting useful sources such as water,
electricity, or gas?

not really, criticized for eating dog meat, lots of poachers kill wild or
engangered animals.

to be improved?
inadequate healthcare facilities, public hospital overload, expensive medicine
CHAPTER 15: TV/ MOVIES
Q1: Do you think there is too much violence in films? Do you think such
portrayals are harmful to anyone?
violent movies, viewers may behave more aggressively, more prone to hold
attitudes that favour violence and aggression, harmful to youngsters.
Q2: Do you think there should be a limit on the time that children spend
watching television? Why, or Why not?
excessive TV watching, compromise early childhood development, hinder
learning, adversely affect health, stimulate aggressive behavior overweight, reduce
physical activity.
Q3: What is your opinion on unauthorised sale of CDs or DVDs?
sals of unauthorized/pirated CDs/DVDs from any source, buy at conventional
retail stores or from reputable websites.
Q4: How has television in your country changed in recent years?
in the past, restricted, censored, since 2003, all channels, made available via
satellite, cable TV, many translated programmes from Reuters, ESPN, Discovery
channel, BBC plus about 40 original channels, pay for these programmes.
