Course Description:
This course is designed to provide you with beginning-level knowledge and skills in volleyball. As a result of the class, the
students are expected to improve their knowledge of skills and basic principles of volleyball and their general physical fitness. Basic
principles, skills, and training methods of volleyball will be taught throughout the semester.
Course Objectives
Students will improve cardiovascular and general physical fitness through participation in conditioning
activities and fitness
assessments at the beginning and end of the semester.
Students will develop a fundamental knowledge of the key elements of a sound fitness program and basic human anatomy by
collaborating with peers and effectively demonstrating and leading peers through warm-ups and drills.
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and mastery of course content via active recall in class, on assignments, quizzes
and tests.
Dress Code:
Suitable clothing for athletic activity (t-shirt and gym shorts) and proper footwear (rubber soled aerobic/running shoes), are required to
participate. Students enrolled in PEB classes may check out a pair of shorts, t-shirt, exercise towel, and bath towel on a class by class
basis.
Grading:
No attendance make-up is permitted. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class. After 1:15, you will be counted as late.
You will be marked late if you arrive 15 minutes after the designated class time and 3 lates equal 1 absence. After the first two
weeks of class there will be a sign-up sheet on which you will be responsible for initialing in the appropriate box. You will earn
3 points for each day you attend and participate in class. You can only earn 1 attendance point if you arrive after 1:15. (late arrival
and/or early departure may be counted against the students attendance at the discretion of the instructor).
You will have three (3) absences which will not count against your grade. After that, all missed classes will affect your
attendance grade by 5 points for each absence, regardless of the reason for the absence.
Active participation is required to be counted present for the day. Failure to bring adequate clothing is not an excuse to miss class
or not participate; you may check out shorts and a t-shirt from the Cage. Jeans and open-toed shoes are not allowed.

As with any physical activity class, there is an inherent risk of injury associated with participation. The University of
Houston does not carry health insurance for students in activity classes. The Department of Health and Human Performance and its
instructors are in no way responsible for injuries incurred as a result of participation in its classes.
