Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd.

(GACL)
The major activity of Aluminum Chloride has been completed; the Company
meets additional export requirements. GACL aims to be a major player in the
world with this expansion plans. It is present across global markets and exports
to USA, Europe, Australia, Africa, Far & Middle East Countries, China and South
Asian Markets

Year 2000 data (http://www.icis.com/resources/news/2000/03/27/109067/aacanhydrous-aluminium-chloride/)

Total world demand for anhydrous aluminium chloride (AAC) has fallen to near 110 000
tonne (excluding CIS and China).
Because of low prices, suppliers, particularly in Japan and the US, tend to serve their
local markets or meet internal company demand, and then sell on any surplus material at
low prices. European material is exported to Asia, the Far East and Latin America, albeit

at extremely low prices. East European countries have also traditionally seen what is
alleged as dumping of cheap material from western Europe

Technology
Aluminium chloride can be manufactured by several methods but the main commercial routes
involve the reaction of chlorine or hydrogen chloride with molten aluminium. Chlorine vapours are
fed beneath the surface of the molten aluminium in a hooded crucible and the resulting
aluminium chloride vapours are condensed. Another process involves the reaction of bauxite with
coke and chlorine at 875C.
There are four major types of technology and each has its own safety, quality and cost concerns,
says one player which claims that some of these routes may be banned in due course, as a
number of serious accidents have been reported in recent years, Due to the corrosive nature of
the process the production plants need intensive maintenance and once a plant is mothballed
there is no easy restart.

Uses

In ibuprofen production hydrofluoric acid replaced AAC as the catalyst of choice around
two years ago. One application that looks set to remain is in pigment and dyestuffs
manufacture, although this looks likely to shift to countries where production costs are
lower. The same is true of flavour and fragrance applications. Hydrated and liquid forms
are also available with 50% of these used in drug and cosmetic production.

GACL commissions aluminium chloride plant

22 November 2007 10:10 Source:ICIS News
MUMBAI (ICIS news)--Indias Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited (GACL) has commissioned
its 50 tonne/day anhydrous aluminium chloride plant at Dahej in Gujarat, a company official said
on Thursday.
"We would export a quarter of the plant's output and sell the rest in the domestic market," he
told ICIS news.
The Indian rupees (Rs)350m ($8.9m) plant would use captive chlorine as feedstock along with
aluminium, which would be purchased from Hindalco and National Aluminium Company
(NALCO), he added.
The plant would start contributing to the companys revenues in around four months, and is
expected to add about Rs500m/year, the official said.
Domestic demand for anhydrous aluminium chloride has grown at around 10%-12% over the last
three years and this trend is likely to continue, he added.
Aluminium chloride finds applications in dyestuff and in organic chemistry. It is also used in
polymerisation and isomerisation reactions of hydrocarbons.
