Although English is spoken by 80% of
those in the continental United States,
the remaining 20% is divided among a
variety of languages. More than 10% of
this group is represented by Spanish
speakers.
In order to compete at the minimum,
and to thrive in the future, foreign lan-
guage competency is the order of the
day.
With the globalization of communication
and commerce, proficiency in a foreign
language and a depth of knowledge is
seen as crucial for both economic op-
portunity, but as a tool for diplomatic
success and security concerns.
For these reasons as well as for the
cognitive and academic benefits, many
are calling for the inclusion of foreign
language instruction at all levels of
American education.
