Giving Update
The ministry of SHC is funded entirely by the
generous giving of Gods people. You will
notice that we do not pass the offering plate;
however, there are offering boxes in the back
of the auditorium. We believe from the Word
of God that the Spirit of God will lead people
towards giving back to God of their first fruits.
...God loves a cheerful giver, (2 Cor. 9:7).

Please prayerfully consider what the Lord

would have you do.

THE WORD ON DISPLAY

SERIES
Part 1
Responding to the Word
Luke 8:1-18

Presented by
Pastor Justin Greene
September 20, 2015
The ever-expanding nature of the Lords ministry at
this time caused Him no illusions. The two parables
recorded here are rooted in the increased popular
attention that was coming His way. He knew that
is was superficial.
The first parable is the well-known one about
the sower, the seed, and the soil. The same
parable with variations occurs elsewhere. The
version that Luke recorded here was given as the
Lord was making His way toward Capernaum near
the end of His tour. The use of parables marks a
new phase in the Lords teaching ministry. He
increasingly resorted to parables as much to
conceal truth as to reveal it. Opposition to His

preaching was on the rise. The Galilean revival

had ended. When the Lord left Capernaum to
carry His message farther afield, the enthusiasm
was at its peak. The Lord was too wise, however,
to think that it could lasthence, this parable,
which emphasizes the factors that hinder the
germination, growth, and fruitfulness of the Word
once it is sown, and also the factors that expose
the human heart for what it is.
The crowds were flocking from the cities all
over the land. The disciples doubtless thought that
things were on the move at last, but Jesus knew
better. The time had come to sift the crowds.1
