Independent Study Points (ISP): Learning activities you choose to investigate or complete that will build language arts skills
and or background knowledge..
For the first nine weeks we are working to create our community and examine the first collection, Ourselves and Others. 135-150
points for an A; 120 -134 for a B; 105 119 for a C One event beyond what is required will be considered for extra credit. You
may not earn extra credit if you repeatedly miss assignments or turn them in late, or have excessive tardies or absences. Extra credit is
limited to 25 extra points. It is the expectation that all work is original work completed without assistance from the internet or other
students. Plagiarism of any kind will result in a grade of zero for the entire 150 point assignment.

RESEARCH: College Night in the Gym: Learn about college applications and meet
representatives from colleges that interest you.
SPEAK: Cheer on Your Bears! Go to a home game (football and volleyball are
currently in season) and encourage the team to victory! Take a picture of yourself
there, write a positive status update about the experience, post it to Twitter or
Instagram and tag #bearenglish or @Bear_English (Instagram) or @bearenglish
(Twitter) or facebook.com/bearenglish1101
SPEAK: Participate in DEBATE: Join the Debate club and participate in a debate

Schedule BEFORE the last week of the quarter. Schedule your book chat before class
one day, during lunch or after school (most days except Wednesday).
WATCH & LISTEN: A professional theater event. Im going to see Spam-a-lot at
the Orlando Shakespeare theatre for the matinee of Oct. 4 th!
Check out the offerings at Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center, Valencia Community
College, Rollins College, UCF, Orlando Rep, Osceola Performing Arts Center, or the
Annie Russell Theater (Rollins College). Take a selfie at the performance and write a
brief response that captures best/worst elements of the production.
ATTEND & SPEAK: Non-athletic, Extra-Curricular Activities: Attend any 2
extra-curricular events of which you are not required to attend. Take a picture of
yourself there, write a positive status update about the experience, post it to Twitter or
Instagram and tag #bearenglish or @Bear_English (Instagram) or @bearenglish
(Twitter)/.
READ & RESEARCH: Learn about a contemporary author or poet. Read one of
their books (for a poet read an entire collection) and give a book talk to the class
(5 minutes in length).
RESEARCH: Imagine you are purchasing a smart phone (or laptop or car or gaming
system). Investigate the product brands on the market. Look at features, cost, pros and
cons and usability. Write up a recommendation for which brand is best.
WRITE: Write a Slice of Life blog post (at least two paragraphs and a picture) for our
class blog: 31students.wordpress.com. See Mrs. Spillane for blog access and a
permission slip. Blog posts are short (2 paragraphs with a picture).
WRITE: Write an article for the IB Newsletter. See Anushri Marar (IB junior)
to sign up!
WRITE, SPEAK & LISTEN: Apply for a room worker position. Interview and get
the job. Do your job for the quarter with a positive attitude and attention to detail. My
