FIGURE OF ANTITHESIS IN LJUBOMIR NENADOVICS
LETTERS FROM ITALY
Summary
The paper deals with the figure of antithesis in the travels of Ljubomir
Nenadovic, Letters from Italy. Four aspects of the work, modeled on the contrastive
principle, are emphasized: metapoetical and personal, confessional discourse,
characters, city chronotope, historical past. The purpose of the figures that are
related to antithesis chiasmus, antimetabole, oxymoron, paradox, syncrisis, irony
and different aspects of lexical, syntactic and textual parallelisms and repetition
figures, such as anaphora and simploca has also been studied. Antiethical
principle can also be detected in the composition, types of narrative transmission,
ethical and ideological values. Humor, irony, paradox and traces of grotesque
parallels can be found in the emphasized antithesis, which points to the conclusion
that Nenadovic was under the influence of Romantic and Enlightenment literary
tradition, as well as the tradition of Baroque.
