Openhole whipstock sidetracking system

TrackMaster OH
Openhole whipstock sidetracking system

Applications

Openhole sidetracking in medium-to-hardformations and formations with unconfined

compressive strengths of up to 40,000 psi [275.8 MPa]

Accurately controlling kickoff depth anddirection

Landing laterals with tight TVD tolerances

Benefits

Maximizes the chance of achieving a successful sidetrack on the firstattempt

Increases reservoir recovery with optimized horizontal lateral

Improves drilling efficiency by providing accurate control for precise kickoff depth
anddirection
Saves rig time by reducing interval drilling time and by eliminating the need to wait for
cement to cure

Features

Ramp that lowers bending stresses

Elimination of packers for faster run-in speed

Hydraulically set expandable anchor with triaxial steel slips that span multiple hole sizes
and accurately set whipstock depth

Sidetrack the uncertainty of cement plugs.

Drill ahead in one trip.
Traditional openhole sidetracking starts with a trip to set a cement plug, followed by nonproductive time waiting for the cement to cure, and then tripping back in with a drill bit to
dress off the plug at the kickoff point. This process can take up to 24 hours before the actual
sidetracking operation begins.

Take control of kickoff depth and orientation

The TrackMaster OH* openhole whipstock sidetracking system eliminates the time-consuming
inefficiencies of traditional tools and methods. Engineered with a steel ramp and hydraulically
expandable anchor, the systemenables running, orienting, anchor setting, cementing, and
stinger recovery to drill aheadin onetrip.

Match the technology with the application using prejob analyses

For planned or unplanned event sidetracking where lower-zone isolation is not required, the
TrackMaster OH system uses sophisticated dynamic modeling to match specific wellbore
departure objectives, constraints, and physical characteristics.
The i-DRILL* engineered drilling system design uses predictive modeling to identify application-specific solutions that minimize vibrations and stick/slip and optimize milling assembly
performance. Predictive modeling minimizes rathole and directional drilling vibrations. The
i-DRILL design process quantifies vibrations and milling ROP, and each component of the
assembly and drillstring is simulated and analyzed to optimize mill and whipstock design
and configuration. Using offset data, surface and downhole measurements, and a thorough
knowledge of products and applications, the i-DRILL design process creates a virtual milling
and drilling environment.
In the execution phase, the Runner* drillstring analysis program provides a complete sidetracking model to help analyze surface parameters, torque and drag, setting operations for
anchors and shear bolt activation, and contact forces and buckle states of the working string
in the departure operation. Once the actual operation has begun, the Runner program provides
a real-time analysis of the modeled parameters as compared with the actual parameters.

Designed to deliver single-trip sidetracking,

the TrackMasterOH system eliminates
the uncertainty of conventional cement
plugs and maximizes the probability of a
successful sidetrack on the first attempt.
For planned or unplanned event
sidetracking where lower-zone isolation is
not required, the TrackMasterOH system
can be matched to specific wellbore
departure objectives, constraints, and
physical characteristics.

Create a clean, smooth transition

The system features a steel ramp

that eliminates the uncertainty
of kicking off with a cement plug
as well as the need for expensive
repeat attempts.
There is no waiting time for cement
to cure, and the time spent drilling
the interval is reduced. The result is
aclean, smooth transition delivered
faster for optimized directional and
horizontalapplications.

Steel ramp.

Control kickoff depth and orientation

The anchor maintains a firm, threepoint grip on the hole wall and is
engineered with an internal lock to
hold the system in place after setting.
With no packer element, the system
runs in hole faster and minimizes the
risk of damage to the anchor.

Triaxial expandable anchor.

CASE STUDY

Deepest openhole whipstock record set in

deepwater Gulf of Mexico at 31,513 ft
Sidetracking in mature, complex field enables
directional drilling assemblies to reach planned target
An operator drilling in Keathley Canyon offshore Louisiana, USA, used TrackMasterOH
system to drill a clean 8-in sidetrack, allowing subsequent directional drilling
assemblies to regain the lost hole by drilling ahead to the planned target. The operation
set a new world record for the deepest openhole whipstock at 31,513 ft.
Using modeling software and automated BHA profile programs to predict the departure
path ensured that the drilling assembly could drill past the whipstock to build the
required separation from the original borehole. An angle-building drilling assembly was
used to drill across the whipstock and establish the rathole.
