PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to outline the job specification for welders in Transnet
Engineering.
PROCEDURE
Welders perform various forms of welding. These include Shielded Metal Arc Welding
(SMAW); Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW); Oxyacetylene Welding; and Gas Tungsten Arc
Welding (GTAW) welding. The job of a welder involves working with various types of
metals.
Welders are required to perform amongst others the following tasks:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The welders shall be qualified according to the required code. The minimum requirement
of the welder shall be artisan welder An artisan welder is a welder with a trade
certificate.
SAFETY/CAUTIONARY MEASURES
Welders are required to wear Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) prior to welding;
follow the necessary health and safety guidelines; and conduct start-up and shut-down
procedures. Eye testing shall be conducted once every year unless otherwise required.
Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 should be adhered to.
