TRIP REPORT- UAP SEMINAR ON NEW DESIGN IN

LANDSCAPING

INTRODUCTION
On Monday March 1, 2010, we attended a seminar about the New
Design in Landscaping sponsored by United Architects of the
Philippines La Union chapter, held in Oasis Hotel San Fernando La
Union. Our goal was to discover and acquire information and
knowledge about new design is landscaping needed in our project. Also
in attendance from our department are arch. Ana S. Mangalino; arch.
Cerise Anne A. Mina and arch. Kristoffer Jonh R. Coronel.

DISCUSSION
Kaizer, joeffrey, Michael and I attended the following seminar;
A.m. session;
8:30-12:00
In the first lecture in the morning architect Rolando Caasi, UAP. SLC
instructor discuss about the different style in landscaping. He
presented the following designs through the use of power point
presentation.

Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor and public spaces

to achieve environmental, socio-behavioral, and/or aesthetic
outcomes. It involves the systematic investigation of existing social,
ecological, and geological conditions and processes in the landscape,
and the design of interventions that will produce the desired outcome.
The scope of the profession includes urban design, site planning, town
or urban planning and recreation planning; green infrastructure
planning and provision, all at varying scales of design, planning and
management. A practitioner i the profession of landscape architecture
is called a landscape architect.

A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely

covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a
waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as
a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems. The use of green
refers to the growing trend of environmentally friendly and does not
refer to roofs which are merely colored green, as with green roof tiles
or roof shingles. Also known as living roofs, green roofs serve several

purposes for a building, such as absorbing rainwater, providing

insulation, creating a habitat for wildlife, and helping to lower urban air
temperatures and combat the heat island effect. There are two types
of green roofs: intensive roofs, which are thicker and can support a
wider variety of plants but are heavier and require more maintenance,
and extensive roofs, which are covered in a light layer of vegetation
and are lighter than an intensive green roof. The term green roof may
also be used to indicate roofs that use some form of "green"
technology, such as a cool roof, a roof with solar thermal collectors or
photovoltaic modules. Green roofs are also referred to as eco-roofs,
oikosteges, vegetated roofs, living roofs, and green roof.
Energy-efficient landscaping
Energy-efficient landscaping is a type of landscaping designed for
the purpose of conserving energy. There is a distinction between the
embedded energy of materials and constructing the landscape, and
the energy consumed by the maintenance and operations of a
landscape.
Design techniques include:

Planting trees for the purpose of providing shades, which reduces

cooling costs.

Planting or building windbreaks to slow winds near buildings,

which prevents heat loss.

Wall sheltering, where shrubbery or vines are used to create a

windbreak directly against a wall. Earth sheltering and
positioning buildings to take advantage of natural landforms as
windbreaks.

Green roof at cool buildings with extra thermal mass and

evapotransperation

Reducing the heat island effect with pervious paving, high albedo
paving, shade, and minimizing paved areas.

Site lighting with full cut off fixtures, light level sensors, and high
efficiency fixtures

Energy-efficient landscaping techniques include using local materials,

on-site composting and chipping to reduce green waste hauling, hand
tools instead of gasoline-powered, and also may involve using droughtresistant plantings in arid areas, buying stock from local growers to
avoid energy in transportation, and similar techniques.
12:00-1:00 Lunch break.
P.m. session
1:00-3:00 Presentation on the new equipments on landscaping.
Architect Dominador Miranda Jr. UAP. SLC instructor presented the new
equipments through the use of power point presentation.
3:00-4:30 Actual testing of the presented equipments through the
guidance of LEMAR Company the owner of the said equipment. The
testing of the equipments was done outside the hotel.

RECOMMENDATION/ CONCLUTION
We all enjoy the one day seminar we gather a lot of information
needed in our future projects. We hope that we can also buy one unit
on the new equipment for the better of our work. We would like also to
share what weve learn in the seminar to our co- architects for them to
have background on landscaping.
Only the purchasing of one unit or more in the equipments for we
believe that it will give a lot of help to lessen the time whenever there
is a project related in landscaping.
