For time immemorial, spring has always been the

catalyst for new activity whether that be spring
cleaning the house, tidying up the garden, or as in
my case, to fire up the hibernating Harley and start
annoying the neighbours again!
Spring also has an association with the over-quoted
phrase, the green shoots of recovery. The new
season does however see BVAA members declaring
their previous years turnover, so that we can
calculate their membership fees for the coming
year. From this data, we usually get a pretty good
picture of how the industry has been doing.

We have yet to receive all replies, but even so a familiar

story is emerging... one of the usual ups and downs. Some markets have obviously
been more seriously affected by the recession, with significant falls. But to date,
more than twice as many members have reported increases in turnover than
decreases. Most of the decreases are not especially large or alarming given the
wider economic climate. One caveat however; Profitability is not reported. Even
so, our conclusion is that the British Valve & Actuator Industry has once again
shown its resilience in challenging times, and we appear to have good reason to
be cautiously optimistic!

BVAA Members impart wisdom at the Yorkshire Regional meeting

This Winter has seen another round of the BVAA Regional supper
meetings hosted by BVAA Chairman Bill Whiteley. Introduced last
year, these informal gatherings are intended to allow individuals the
opportunity to meet with fellow members of the association, and to
share thoughts on the direction of the industry and its association.
Two events have been held so far, in the North West and Yorkshire,
with another meeting to come in the South in the spring.

More Repair Meetings

The BVAA Repair WG has held a number of meetings recently,

hosted by Dresser, Tyco/Hindle, Rotork Gears and also at the
BVAA Headquarters. A programme of monthly meetings has been
initiated, in order to develop the Code of Practice on repair at a
faster rate. The number of repairers joining the BVAA has also
continued to grow, with new members bringing new ideas to the
discussions.

Is it a Belleville
Washer or a Precision
Disc Spring?
When Julian Belleville patented his conical spring disc in
1861 it is unlikely he had any idea that it would have such
wide-ranging applications.
Unlike the conventional helical compression spring that
has a linear force/deflection characteristic, the same
characteristic in a disc spring is a function of the variable
cone-height to thickness ratio. This is often a useful
feature: for example, the seal on a spherical ball valve
requires a spring force back-up to achieve sufficient
seating stress which must be maintained throughout
a significant amount of seal face wear. A disc spring
with a cone height approximately 1.5 times the material
thickness, offers a near constant force for a range
of deflections. A constant force characteristic is also
desirable in joints or bolting systems subject to thermal
expansion and contraction.
Stacking
While the variation of cone height to thickness ratio can
be employed to produce characteristics of a progressive,
linear, or regressive nature, the full realisation of the
versatility of the disc spring emerges with stacking into
spring columns.
A disc spring nested inside another i.e., convex face
placed to concave face (same way up) is described as
two disc springs assembled in parallel. This arrangement
results in a force capacity double that of a single disc
spring, yet the deflection capability remains that of a
single disc.

It is a misconception that the resultant force from two

disc springs assembled in parallel is equal to the force
of a disc spring that is twice the thickness of the single
disc. Not so, due to the fact that disc spring thickness
is raised to the power of three in the force calculation
formula. For example, for identical inside and outside
diameters, the force to flat of a single 2mm thick disc
may be 5,423N and the force to flat of a single 4mm
thick disc is 26,697N.
Having multiplied the force of a single disc spring by
nesting further disc springs of the same dimensions in
parallel, it is possible to multiply the deflection by adding
further nested units to the column which are apposed to
one another, - i.e. back-to-back. Single disc springs of
the same dimensions can also be stacked back-to-back,
termed stacking in series.
When disc springs are employed in series or parallel
stacks, or a combination of both, Figure 1, friction
occurs at the bearing points of opposed springs in series
stacking, and to a greater degree across the interfaces
of parallel nested discs. Often the hysteresis due to
friction is advantageous for those applications requiring
a damping effect. A rule of thumb for guidance on
length of disc spring stacks to minimise friction, is that,
in the unloaded condition, the stack length should not
exceed 2.5 times the disc springs outside diameter.
Disc spring selection
Precision disc springs, produced to the DIN standards
2092 and DIN 2093, are pre-stressed (scragged);
machining and radiusing of edges also removes stress
raisers, which could otherwise reduce fatigue life.
The term Belleville washer generally applies to the lower
cost, less precise form of conical spring disc, normally
used on applications of a less critical nature. Scragging
is omitted and the inside and outside diameters are
not machined. Select therefore disc springs to DIN
2092/2093 for critical loading or dynamic applications
and the Belleville washer for static applications where
some setting and /or loss of force can be tolerated.

Pressure regulators developed

for subsea use
Pressure Tech has worked
in partnership with a client based in Milan, Italy,
over the past 12 months
to develop a combination pressure regulator to
operate at depths of 300
metres.
The application
is for the defence industry
and therefore the application details are confidential, but the design criteria required steady outlet
pressure under decaying
inlet pressure, and protection of the system in case
of failure or leakage from
the pressure let down.
The regulator design incorporates a combination of
a pressure reducing valve
New subsea PRV
and a back pressure valve
to provide accurate control
range with minimal deadband. The pressure reducing portion includes a balanced main valve to ensure
steady outlet pressure even with decaying inlet pressure.
Two pressure regulators have been developed and
tested; the COM-540 reduces pressure from 300bar
to 200bar, and the COM-301 reduces the pressure
further from 200bar down to 25bar or 40bar. All
units are preset by Pressure Tech and fitted with antitamper devices to ensure only authorised persons can
service the regulators. The design includes a sealed
spring chamber to ensure the pressure set topside is
maintained at the preset values irrespective of the
depth of seawater.
Each regulator is function tested over 20 times to
check for repeatability and stability at the specified set
range, and externally pressurised to simulate the depth
of seawater to 300m.
Pressure Tech offer a core range or pressure regulators
for use on liquid and gas applications, but provide
engineered solutions to ensure we provide the exact
product solution to our customers needs.

Emersons New WirelessHART

Fisher position monitor
Emerson announces New WirelessHART Fisher
position monitor to extend safety and performance
gains from Smart Wireless solutions
Wireless and linkage-less monitor delivers previously
unavailable equipment position data to improve
plant performance and safety.
Emerson Process Management announces expansion
of its Smart Wireless family with the release of the
Fisher 4320 wireless position monitor. Beyond its
wireless advantages, the new monitor is the first and
only linkage-less device to provide accurate position
feedback and uses industry standard WirelessHART
communications.
Most process plants have hundreds, or even
thousands, of valves that are not connected to
the control system because of high wiring costs.
These valves currently provide no feedback on their
actual positions, even though incorrectly positioned
valves represent a significant cause of safety-related
incidents. Unfortunately, users have typically not
been able to access the position data that is valuable
to the performance and safety of their plant.
The Fisher 4320 wireless position monitor changes
the economics since it represents only 10% to
20% of the installed cost of a wired solution. The
wireless monitor installs and commissions quickly,
providing users with a cost-effective way to access
the information.
The Fisher wireless device monitors equipment such
as valves, regulators, louvres, displacement and
float level sensors, and relief valves in standard and
hazardous area locations. With its patented noncontacting rotary and linear monitoring, the 4320
is adaptable to almost anything where a percentage
measurement of span is desired.
The Fisher 4320 wireless position monitor is part
of Emersons broad range of intelligent, digital field
devices that power the PlantWeb architecture to
improve plant efficiency by 2% and more through
delivering asset optimisation, process automation,
and management execution. Like all other devices in
the Emerson Smart Wireless family, the 4320 position
monitor offers secure and reliable performance. The
position monitor has a 5 to 10 year SmartPower
battery life and is fully compatible with existing Smart
Wireless networks.

The new Fisher 4320

wireless position
monitor delivers
previously unavailable
equipment position
data to improve plant
performance and safety

highly reliable, smart monitoring devices with wireless

transmitters in an innovative self-organising mesh network
that automatically adapts as device points are added or
removed, or obstructions encountered.
The Smart Wireless family offers solutions for field
instrumentation and plant operations.
The Fisher
position monitor is one of the wireless solutions for field
instrumentation. The family also includes the TopWorx
4310 wireless position monitor, which wirelessly detects
rotary or linear movement, and monitors the on/off status
of valves and sliding-stem regulators, safety relief valves
and more. Other wireless devices include Rosemount

success with Gasco
In one of the latest contract successes with Australian
based Gasco Pty Ltd, Rotork Fluid Systems has completed
a valve actuation project involving fuel gas valve trains
and control skids for three API 560 gas fired direct
heaters.
Designed for gas plant and refinery processes, Gasco API
560 heaters generate hot combustion gases that transfer
their heat to a process liquid or gas flowing through
internal coils. A typical heater consists of a radiant
section, convective section, stack, burners, fuel skid and
control system.
Rotork Fluid Systems contract has encompassed the
supply of CP and GP Series pneumatic actuators for valve
automation, together with the design and manufacture
of valve mounting hardware, assembly, testing and
local support. These services are assisted
by Rotork Fluid Systems comprehensive
workshop facilities in Bayswater, where
Gasco has recently established a new
manufacturing plant. Gasco heaters, skids
and other process equipment items are
designed entirely in-house at the companys
Bayswater office.
The location of this project is a gas plant in
a central Asian republic, to where the three
skids have been exported for connection
under Gasco field supervision to three
19MW thermal heaters manufactured for
Gasco in Malaysia.
The contract continues Gascos success
in export markets including the Middle
East and Asia. During 2009 Rotork Fluid
Systems support for this success included
the Pluto (Woodside Energy) and Mortlake
(Origin) projects in Australia and the Dolphin
Energy (Total) project in Abu Dhabi.

Heap & Partners

Consolidated!
BVAAs Rob Bartlett recently met with Heap
& Partners Managing Director David Millar,
at the new Heaps facility in Birkenhead...
Rob Bartlett: David, the first thing I noticed on
approaching the new Heap & Partners facility
is that unlike the old site, it is one, consolidated
building.
The previous site was a variety of
separate buildings was this a conscious change
in approach?
David Millar: Yes indeed. The Hoylake site had evolved
over several decades, where buildings had been adapted
and developed to suit our growing and changing needs.
We were keen to consolidate all our three sites in the
North West, and when we decided to look for new
premises, we definitely wanted to bring them and our
workshops into one, fully integrated whole. Canada
Works fits the bill perfectly.

RB: Why Canada Works?

DM: Our founder William Heap once worked for the
famous railway builder Thomas Brassey and Brasseys
original Canada Works was just a short distance from
here. It seemed fitting to both gentlemen to revive the
name.

RB: The most dramatic difference I noticed has to

be the size and layout. It looks like a lot of time
and effort has been spent on planning the new
site?

Just part of the new 43,000 sq ft premises at Birkenhead.

DM: This new facility covers 43,000 square feet, and
represents a significant new investment for Heaps. We
wanted to be absolutely certain that we got everything
right, first time. As you have seen, the warehouse is one
continuous open space and the production, assembly
and testing areas give the absolute optimum flow of
work from Goods Received through to Despatch.

RB: The offices look pretty smart too.

DM: Heap & Partners has gone through a lot of changes
lately, not just in our location but also in our strategic
partnerships, product portfolio and our general overall
approach. We felt that it important that our offices
should reflect these changes. Our staff members have
also benefitted from the new break out / relaxation areas
and of course the new gym. We even have plans for solar
and wind power generation on site. I like to think that
we are fit for the future, in all respects!

Investing In The Future

Safety Systems UK Ltd Recruits Apprentices
There have been many business improvements at Safety
Systems UK Ltd in recent years. A strong commitment
to the people agenda has been key to the success story,
which has also included investment in development
and training at all levels of the organisation. The most
recent step in this program is the appointment of two
Apprentices.
Paul Williams, Director; General Manager at Safety
Systems and Steve Steinsberg, Head of HR for Tyco
Flow Control UK, Ireland & South Africa, both agree that
Over many years, the engineering industry in the UK has
experienced a decline in the number of apprenticeships
being offered, so it is very significant for us and for the
local community that we are investing in the future in
this way. Our aim is to recruit further Apprentices in the
years ahead.
After an extensive selection and assessment process,
Aaron Jones and Matthew Greene commenced their
training program, which will take 4 years to complete via
a combination of college studies and work experience
within the business.
The success of the program will be achieved by a
partnership that includes the Company, the Apprentices
and very importantly their parents. To demonstrate
this team approach, an evening event was held at
Safety Systems Manchester facility, attended by the

Management team. The evening was a great success,
with presentations about the business, a tour of the
facility and some real life stories from Safety Systems
managers Mark Lawrence and Phil Cox about what it
takes to progress from an apprentice into management
roles, they themselves both having been apprentices.
Geoff Twiss, who retired as Senior Shop Steward
at the end of 2009, played a big part in encouraging
this initiative. Says Geoff, this is the kind of
legacy which I feel proud to have been part of.
The final comments came from the Apprentices
themselves, This is a great opportunity for us.

8049 digital ex positioner

Schubert & Salzer Control Systems 8049 positioner is

a digital unit for positioning pneumatically controlled
actuators. The positioner can be top-mounted to any
commercially available pneumatic control valve fitted
with linear and partturn actuators. This extremely
compact design has proven to be ideal as the positioner
is mounted centrally over the valve actuator and needs
no additional exposed linkages, ensuring no moving
parts are accessible, maximising operational safety
and reliability.
There are three operating systems
available; the standard 4 wire unit using 24Vdc solenoids
and 4-20ma control, two wire loop powered using
Piezoelectric technology and innovative AS-I control
technology.
Positioners with 4-wire technology offer the advantage
of not necessarily requiring the use of Instrument
standard compressed air therefore being adaptable to
almost any industry available air source, however they
do require an additional 24Vdc power supply. The piezo
technology requires Instrument air quality as is generally
used by pneumatic positioners and uses loop power
from the control circuit, ideal for use within the process
industry.
The digital top-mounted 8049 positioners are now also
available worldwide for the first time in two explosive
proof versions with a two-wire system. The 8049-Ex
digital positioner is certified for use within high explosion
risk areas including Zone 0 intrinsically safe for Gas and
dust laden atmospheres.

Rotork - Intelligent valve

actuation at Severn Trent
Waters Beacon Project
Severn Trent Waters Minworth sewage treatment works,
which serves around 1.75 million of Birminghams
population, is undergoing a major modernisation project
that will improve the quality of the water put back into
the River Tame and significantly upgrade the works
facilities, improving the quality of the 1bl (one billion
litre) daily treatment capacity. The 145 million project
is being handled by an alliance comprising Severn
Trent Water, North Midland Construction Nomenca and
Biwater, with Pick Everard as consultants. It will create
one of the worlds most efficient and technologically
advanced large scale treatment works.
Tony Wray, chief executive officer of Severn Trent Water,
has praised the scheme as a Beacon Project, adding
that the 30-strong supply chain should be proud of the
numerous achievements at Minworth. As a member of
this supply chain, Rotork has supplied over 250 Profibus
network-enabled IQPro intelligent electric actuators for
valve control throughout the new and refurbished plant
areas.
Many of the actuators are installed on the new eight-lane
inlet works, the new 22 primary settlement tank island
and the enlarged activated sludge plant. In all areas

actuators are also installed on the air flow control valves

that regulate the introduction of air into the treatment
tanks.
The actuators are linked on fully redundant Profibus field
networks to Allen Bradley PLC platforms at intelligent
motor control centres (iMCCs) throughout the site.
These interface with the sites Rockwell SCADA system,
which is accessible at local HMI terminals at key site
locations. Feedback from sensors throughout the plant
is used to automatically operate the actuators to account
for fluctuations in flow, caused, for example, by storm
conditions, and to enhance the efficiency of operations.
The software for the SCADA system has been written
by Saftronics Controls and the whole network has
been designed to provide extended information and
historical trending for energy management and condition
monitoring.
Assisting this function, data loggers in the Rotork
actuators store a commissioning footprint of valve
operating torque and a torque curve for all subsequent
valve operations. This data can be downloaded and
analysed with Rotork IQ-Insight software in order to
identify and plan valve maintenance requirements. The
technology assists the optimisation of plant utilisation
and eliminates the need for over-cautious maintenance
scheduling.

The new primary settlement tank island at Minworth

Rotork actuators specified for critical

valve duties on Royal Navy frigates
Royal Navy warships are being equipped with the latest
Rotork intelligent electric valve actuators for rapid
reaction fire protection duties.
The Rotork IQTPro actuators have been specified to
replace existing pneumatic equipment on butterfly valves
in sprinkler systems on Royal Navy Type 23 frigates.
The Rotork actuators will be remotely controlled and
operate from a secure 115V ac power supply, facilitating
an immediate response to potential fire or explosion
hazards. In addition to increasing the integrity of the
system, the switch to electrical actuation reduces the
ships companys service and maintenance workload and
eliminates the current need for back-up air cylinders.

As a further assistance to maintenance, all the actuators

utilise Rotorks bumpless Profibus interface module,
which enables individual motorised valves to be
disconnected without disrupting communication with
the other devices on the network.
The new Rotork actuators join hundreds that are
already installed at Minworth. Most have been fitted
during previous modernisation programmes at the site
and supplied through the long-standing framework
agreement that Severn Trent Water has with Rotork.

loggers in every actuator record a commissioning log
and historical record of subsequent valve operations,
including valve torque profiles. This information can
be downloaded and analysed on a PC running Rotork

Schuck Group Asia Gas Pipeline Contract

The Schuck Group has recently completed the design, manufacture, supply
and commissioning contract for 150 42" ball valves for the Asia Gas Pipeline Project
Timur Lenk Head of Schuck Sales explains: The pipeline
runs 1,818 km from Uzbekistan to China across some
extremely rugged and demanding terrain which made
the project very challenging in many ways. In some areas
the pipeline runs through regions with limited highway
access and in many cases telecommunications and a
suitable electrical supply were not available due to the
remote location.

Despite the lack of an electrical power supply and

telecommunications facilities in some places, the valve
and actuators must be of a high integrity and operate
and communicate reliably with the main gas pipeline
control centre at all times.
Schuck, in co-operation with the client, developed
and supplied a reliable solution ustilising solar energy
to provide the actuator power, communications and
monitoring facilities. The system provides energy for
up to twenty days irrespective of weather or climatic
conditions.
The SEC 200 provides reliable communication with the
control centre, monitors solar energy, charging current,
battery voltage, valve position etc.
Additionally the SEC 200 monitors the gas pressure in
the pipeline and relays this information to the control
center providing a comprehensive operational overview
at each valve/actuator location at all times. The use of
solar technology to power the actuator control system
is possible because of the very low current input of the
SEC 200.

BEL Valves & Actuators

for High Temperature/High Pressure

(HP/HT) Applications
There are regions across the globe containing hydrocarbons
at great depth, high pressure and temperature. The
North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Indonesia, China & Caspian
Sea all have hydrocarbon deposits to exploit, but at a
cost. As reserves of existing oil and gas deposits begin
to deplete, however, the drive to develop these reserves
has been growing.
Due to BEL Valves extensive experience of high pressure
valves we pioneered some of the earliest developments of
high pressure, high temperature hydrocarbon reservoirs
in the North Sea, back in 1996. Since then BEL Valves
has supplied valves and actuators for many of these
projects for both surface and subsea applications around
the world.
High pressure and high temperature individually present
problems when designing equipment for oilfield service.
Weight and space is often a significant factor, but when
designing for high pressure, valves are necessarily larger
and heavier.
Material choice therefore is key when dealing with high
pressures. Steels need to have high strength that can
be heat treated to maintain the strength throughout
the thickness of the metal and must also have excellent
corrosion resistance. The best solution to this is to make
the body and bonnet from a high strength steel and
weld clad all of the internal surfaces with the corrosion
resistant material.
Designing equipment for high temperature creates
equally challenging but different problems, the most
significant of these is sealing. Gate and Ball valves
typically have some form of non metallic seal on the seat
ring and stem. These seals are made from thermoplastic
compounds that can operate at temperatures in excess
of 250OC but as the pressure increases the working
temperature decreases creating the first hurdle. Secondly
the seal materials used for high temperatures are
generally rigid at room temperature making it difficult to
achieve a gas tight seal at low temperature.

Inspection of high integrity pressure protection

system (HIPPS) valves
As the exploration of hydrocarbon bearing regions
across the world enters more challenging environments,
more high pressure, high temperature applications are
being discovered. The specifications are getting more
demanding, current pressure is in excess of 1380 bar
(20000psi) and temperature in excess of 200OC. Only by
the use of systems such as HIPPS, High Integrity Pressure
Protection System, will these fields be developed. The
HIPPS will enable lower pressure equipment to be used
downstream of the HIPPS. However even HIPPS valves
will have to work in more extreme high pressure, high
temperature conditions.

Website: www.belvalves.co.uk

BEL Valves therefore ran an intensive 12 month program

of seal testing to overcome this which resulted in a
sealing configuration that was suitable for both high and
low temperature.

Eurostop Butterfly valves: not

just a valve but an opportunity to
torque less and achieve more
Iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK has developed
an exclusive new range of Eurostop butterfly valves which
provide the modern solution for network engineers
Used typically as isolation devices on pipelines,
waterworks and hydroelectric plants, Eurostop butterfly
valves offer significant cost-saving benefits over
traditional gate valves typically used in this application.
Due to the size differential between a butterfly valve and
gate valve in larger diameters, butterfly valves require
less depth of cover during installation. This means less
concrete is required to build the valve chamber and so
creates a reduction in CO2 emissions.
In terms of unit cost, the Eurostop is more cost-effective
than a large diameter gate valve, as is the actuator

required in motorised applications. Also due the nature

of butterfly valves, the Eurostop does not require a
diverter valve to help regulate differential pressure to
reduce the opening torque of the valve.
Eurostop butterfly valves draw on 30 years of design
experience at Saint-Gobain PAM, utilising the most up to
date design software, to optimise hydraulic performance,
durability and sealing.
The ductile iron body and disc create a high strengthto-weight ratio and a safety factor in excess of 4.
Operating torques are significantly reduced due to the
double eccentricity of the disc and the fact that each
valve is fitted with an AUMA gearbox as standard.
The valves offer low head loss in the fully open position
and a perfectly watertight seal when closed. Optimum
sealing is achieved through the presence of an automatic
continuous gasket and stainless steel cold rolled sealing
seat which prevents thermal stresses and blowholes.
Eurostop Butterfly valves fully comply with 1074-1 and
2, EN593 and ISO 10631 and are available for both
water and sewage applications PN10, PN16 and PN25.
They are available in manual, buried, flange mounted for
actuator, or actuated versions.
Tara Smith, Valves Product Manager, Saint-Gobain PAM
UK commented: The new Eurostop range offers major
benefits to specifiers and installers in terms of reduced
unit cost and installation costs, optimum performance
and environmental benefits in installation. Its stateof-the-art design, versatility and compliance with all
industry requirements are set to make Eurostop the first
choice of specifiers.

Truflo Marine attends launch of

Anti - Air Warfare destroyer Defender
BAE Systems Surface Ships Limited host naming and launch ceremony at
Govan for the 5th Type 45 Daring Class Anti Air Warfare Destroyer, Defender
The event was attended by two Truflo Marine team
members Brian Woodley, Project Manager and Paul
Walton, Project Engineer who have both expressed what
an honour and privilege it was to attend. Brian and Paul
had a pivotal role in managing the multi-million pound
contract for the supply of approximately 3,800 valves
for each ship.
Truflo Marine manufactured the entire critical high
integrity ball; plug and swing check valves along
with the High Pressure Air Reducing and Distribution
Manifolds. These products are all manufactured at their
manufacturing plant in Birmingham, UK.
Truflo Marine also project managed over a dozen suppliers for the supply of all valves and actuators for the
vessels. As part of this service Truflo Marine introduced
new suppliers into this market as well as delivering significant cost-savings for the shipbuilder.

The ceremony commenced with an introduction from Mr

Alan Johnstone CBE, the Chief Executive of BAE Systems
Surface Ships; As she stands of the shipyard of Govan,
Defender is already 67% complete, a remarkable feat
for such as complex warship. Mr Johnstone went on to
praise the continuous efforts of his own teams and the
many suppliers and contractors who have contributed
enormously in getting her to such an advanced state.
The naming and launch are key events in the life of
Defender as she starts her time afloat. Ahead of her
lies a taxing programme of system commissioning and
vigorous tests prior to sea trials and then acceptance
into the Royal Navy. Like her sister vessels, Defender
represents a giant leap forward in design, technology
and capability.

But why didnt

we know that?
By Malcolm Webb, Chief Executive
Oil & Gas UK
It had been an enjoyable supper with new acquaintances.
The question came at coffee: So, Malcolm, what do you
do for a living? Well, I replied, I work for the UK oil
and gas industry.
The retort quickly came back, But we import all our gas
from Russia these days, renewable energy is replacing oil
and UK engineering is just history. So what do you do on
the other six days of the week?
Ah, but you see, I said, the truth is rather different.
I went on to explain.
The UK oil and gas industry is a central pillar of our
economy, investing more than any other (31 per cent of
the total), paying more tax than any other (30 per cent
of all corporation tax last year) and employing 450,000
people across the UK in high quality jobs enjoying
average earnings of 50,000 per annum.
Today coal, nuclear and renewables together meet only
about one quarter of Britains total primary energy
needs. The other three quarters of the energy which we
need to fuel our cars, trucks and buses, provide heat,
light and power to our homes, offices, hospitals and
schools and generally provide the power for modern
living, relies on oil and gas. Luckily for us today, UK
production meets almost all our need for oil and 70 per
cent of our gas. Furthermore, despite what some say,
currently we import almost no gas from Russia and our
imports come mostly from Norway.
Assuming the government meets all of its targets for
renewable energy, 70 per cent of our primary energy
supply in 2020 will still come from oil and gas. We may
have so far produced 38 billion barrels of UK oil and gas
but we could have up to 25 billion barrels left to come
and still be producing 40 per cent of the UKs total daily
needs in 2020.
If UK engineering is regarded externally as a spent force,
our industry defies the trend. Its supply chain is a global
centre of engineering excellence and undisputed world
leader in high tech subsea expertise. In 2008 British
contractors together earned 5 billion for the UK in
exporting oilfield goods and services. As I paused, the
response came back from all around the table: But
why didnt we know that? That is a very good question
and one which I find worrying. Worrying, because in
my experience the great majority of people seem to be
unaware of these facts.
36 VALVEuser SPRING 2010

VALVE USER

Which begs the question why should that be so? Is it

because most of our operations take place at sea and
over the horizon, literally out of sight and out of mind?
Could it be that the UKs oil and gas reserves are of no
particular interest to the average person? Or is it that
the oil and gas industry is generally an introspective one,
reluctant to proclaim its important role and undeniable
successes?
Whatever the reason, there does seem to be a serious
lack of knowledge on the part of the general public
about this great UK industry. I am prepared to wager
that if you asked a random selection of the shoppers
in any British shopping centre (bar in Aberdeen), only
a small handful would know that this country is still a
significant oil and gas producer and has the ability to
remain so for decades yet to come.
How many would know about our global reputation for
excellence in offshore and subsea engineering? And here
I believe lies a real danger for our industry; the danger
of political irrelevance which can come when an industry
slips out of public consciousness.
At Oil & Gas UK we are working hard to try and turn this
situation around but we do not pretend that we have all
the answers or that we can do this alone. There is a
role for everyone here and I would be very interested to
hear what more you think could be done to communicate
better the importance and relevance of this industry to
the public at large.

Smith Flow Control

Easi-Drive Provides
Emergency Portable
Valve Operation
Wastewater treatment plant can operate
valves in event of power outage
The Easi-Drive portable valve actuator from Smith
Flow Control provides wastewater treatment plants
with emergency operation of valves in the event of a
power failure. Easi-Drive can open or close electric
actuated valves during a power outage to protect against
overflows. In the event of an outage, an operator can
use Easi-Drive powered by an electric generator to make
the required valve movements until power is restored.
Easi-Drive is a fully portable, lightweight and adaptable
tool available in electric, pneumatic and battery powered
modes. Suitable for all hazardous areas, Easi-Drive
reduces work crew tasks down to one-man operation
and eliminates operator fatigue and risk of injury. The
tools reaction device protects the operator from the
kick normally associated with a torque wrench. EasiDrive also features a variable output torque adjustment,
available in various sizes of maximum output from 350
to 8,500 foot pounds. Unlike an impact wrench, which
could damage a valve, the Easi-Drive is a continuous
drive system.
Smith Flow Control (SFC) was established in 1985 to
provide engineered safety systems for hazardous valve
operations. Most offshore installations in the North
Sea have been equipped with SFC systems as well as
the majority of related onshore processing facilities
throughout Europe. By 1990 SFC became the generic
term for key interlock safety systems in the international
Oil & Gas industry and its client base now includes
most of the major operating companies across all five
continents. For over 20 years, Smith Flow control has
never failed to provide a viable technical solution to a

Rotorks CVA electric actuator

A fit and forget solution for power stations sticky valve problem
The Rotork CVA electric control
valve actuator has proved to
be a fit and forget solution
for a challenging application in
the harsh environment of a UK
coal-fired power station.
The CVA actuator has replaced
a pneumatic actuator and I/P
convertor on one of the fuel oil
purge lines for the burners at
the RWE Tilbury power station.
The power station is coal fired,
but oil is used to light and start
the burners on the stations
three boilers. Installed over
eighteen months ago, the CVA
has proved to be a fit and
forget solution, requiring no
maintenance.

In particular, it has been noted that there is never a

problem with sticking and overshooting, which happens
with the pneumatically actuated valves on the same duty
when the valve has been closed for a while and the oil
congeals on the seat and plug. In addition, the pneumatic
actuators require regular maintenance, sometimes
including the replacement of damaged diaphragms, all of
which is eliminated through the use of the CVA.
RWEs Kevin Wade, who is in charge of the fuel oil purge
line installation at Tilbury, confirmed that the CVA has
worked above all expectations and I would be pleased to
use it on other areas of the plant.
It is estimated that there are over 500 pneumatically
operated control valves in a typical fossil-fuelled power
station, so the use of the CVA as an all-electric alternative
presents the potential for huge savings in maintenance
and repair times. The other significant benefit of the
CVA is the lower use of energy. Because pneumatically
operated control valves rely on an instrument air supply,
compressed air has to be constantly available to operate
the actuators even when they are resting at a fixed
set point. The losses due to leakage, compression
and transmission in an air supply system means that
approximately half the input energy is lost. The CVA,
being a high efficiency electric actuator, uses little
energy when it moves, and the losses associated with a
pneumatic supply are eliminated.

New Flowserve Heavy-Duty

Actuator Extends Cycle Life
and Reduces Maintenance
Flowserve Corporation, a leading provider of flow control
products and services for the global infrastructure
markets, recently unveiled the new Flowserve Automax
RG Series Heavy-Duty Scotch Yoke Pneumatic Actuator.
The new actuator offers customers the opportunity
to realize savings through an extended cycle life and
reduced maintenance costs. Most importantly, plant and
personnel safety is enhanced due to the RGs design,
which is compliant to IEC 61508 (Functional Safety
Related Systems) Safety Integrity Level 3. This Safety
Standard emphasizes that the quality and reliability of
the equipment forming the safety system are key to the
prevention of failure.

The IP67M (temporary submersion) rating and marinegrade epoxy-surface treatment ensures optimal ingress
environmental protection when installed in harsh corrosive
atmospheres such as offshore installations, said Don
Weeks, Product Portfolio Manager, Flowserve Flow
Control Division. The goal of the RG design is to extend
and protect the customers capital investment which can
reduce the cost of ownership for the product life cycle.
The new Automax RG-Series features a modular
design; the body, pneumatic and spring segments
are independent modules. The pneumatic and spring
modules can easily be changed on site to modify the
actuator torque output and fail rotation direction.
Without this feature, a new actuator must be purchased
to make these changes. With a pull-to-compress spring
module, manual overrides can easily be added for springreturn or double-acting requirements. These features
can minimize customer maintenance budgets by reducing
product modification and installation time.
The symmetrical body design enables interchangeability
of spring and pressure modules. The pressure-module
piston incorporates dual-wear bands and dynamic-quad
seals; dual wear bands provide forward wiping action
which can extend quad seal life. Inside the pressure and
torque module, critical sealing and load bearing surfaces
are honed and hard-chrome plated to reduce surface
wear and increase corrosion resistance. Both features
can further extend actuator cycle life.

The new hard-chrome plated steel guide bar provides

optimal support of the transverse loads.
Coupling
the yoke are new aluminum bronze slider blocks that
minimize contact stress and ensure high-cycle life.
Combining these key technologies results in extended
automation life cycle to increase production up time and
reduce maintenance costs.
The Automax RG-Series is lighter and has a smaller
dimensional envelope for ease of installation and reduced
cost. It represents a 20 percent weight reduction and a
20 percent end-to-end length reduction compared to
previous designs. The actuator features an expanded
torque output range of 2.2 million inch/pounds (248,566
Newton Metres). The availability of more than 100 output
torque profiles optimizes valve automation selection and
reduces the weight, size and cost of the actuator.
The actuator conforms to global mounting and accessory
mounting standards including International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) 5211 valve interface with MSS
option and NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845 compliance.
The Automax RG Series can be used in quarter-turn
automation applications for ball, plug, and butterfly
valves and rotary dampers in chemical, refining, oil and
gas and general industrial applications. Scotch yoke
actuators create torque with a mechanical advantage and
are most often used when valve torque exceeds rackand-pinion actuator designs. The Scotch yoke mechanism
converts linear motion (force) to rotational motion
(torque), producing 90 degrees or more of rotation.

DN1500 High
Performance Butterfly
Valve with Rotork
actuator

Leeds Valve, the British Butterfly Valve manufacturer,

has recently delivered a major order of bespoke High
Performance Butterfly Valves two weeks ahead of
schedule to the Emirates Aluminium Smelter Complex,
UAE.
The order worth over 1m was for a range of High
Performance Butterfly Valves and baffle plates in sizes
from 400mm to 1500mm, all manufactured from ASTM
A 890 6A Super Duplex Stainless Steel.
The valves will be installed at the US$7billion Emirates
Aluminium Smelter Complex on sea water duty and
will be used as flow control valves in combination with
baffles to regulate the back pressure in circulating and
raw water service lines.
George Burns, Leeds Valve Technical Director, says; The
specification called for a unique combination of low
noise and anti-cavitation valve trim, baffles and valve
to actuator weight ratio restrictions, as well as special
actuator controls and air fail systems. At Leeds, we were
able to combine all these requirements in a cost effective
design package and hence won the order.
This represents yet another significant step forward
for Leeds Valve since the acquisition by Flow Group in
October 2007. Not only have Leeds Valve dramatically
improved the on time delivery of orders to over 95%
on time, but also they have upgraded their Quality
Management System and are now approved by Lloyds
Register Quality Assurance to ISO 9001:2008.

LG Valves re-launch
LG Ball Valves Limited is proud to announce its company
brand re-launch LG Valves in the BVAAs Valve User
Magazine. As some will know LG Ball Valves Ltd was
purchased by the AVS2 group in 2008. This group of
companies now consists of Aberdeen Valve Supplies Ltd
and LG Valves.
Since the acquisition a number of improvements have
been implemented. Support and investment has been
forthcoming from AVS2s Chairman, Sylvia Aitken and
Manager Director, Gordon Whyte. This backing has
provided LG Valves with a fantastic opportunity to
develop and strengthen itself in the market place from
its core facility in the centre of the UK.
Based in the West Midlands, LG Valves is a true mark of
quality British engineering. A niche product is at the core
of LG Valves success. Not many valve manufacturers
can boast deliveries of fully designed, manufactured and
tested valves from raw materials to end product in 2
weeks!

10 inch twin ball valve actuated and manual operation

All materials sourced by LG Valves must be of original

Western European origin, this is something LG Valves
has adhered to at all times. This ensures that quality
traceable materials are being used to build our valves
and we are proud to uphold this stance in a commercially
driven market.
As part of the investment programme LG Valves has
grown in numbers. Dedicated departments have been
created so that customers and suppliers can feel valued
when working with LG Valves. Many of the staff are
local people from an area of historical manufacturing
and they bring many years of knowledge and expertise
to the company.

LG Valves

A new General Manager, Frankie McCarthy, has taken

over the running of the Aldridge factory. Frankie brings
a positive fresh perspective and for all those that know
Frankie will recognize that his energy and enthusiasm
will drive the organization forward.
Vita Anello was appointed Sales Development Manager
in October 2009. Her focus has been to promote the
products in the current range and develop both new and
existing clients. She is also at the forefront with the
development and marketing of the company, expanding

many years in the industry Ryan brings knowledge and
experience not only on the manufacturing and design
side of the valves but also global market awareness and
client service requirements.
Another area of the investment programme has been the
overhaul of the Website. Due to be completed shortly
the Webpage at www.lgvalves.co.uk will highlight the
range of valves and services we provide. Some only
consider LG Valves for standard metal seated Trunnion
and Floating valves, but we do more! Twin isolation ball
valves, multi-ported valves, exotic materials, high and
low cryogenic temperaturesthe list goes on! Our core
market has been in the Oil and Gas industry supplying a
number of valves for severe applications. As times have
changed LG Valves has evolved, we also cover markets
in Nuclear, Refinery, Defence, Food, Pharmaceutical and

All LG Valves are bespoke. We hold no preassembled
valves in stock therefore all our valves are manufactured
from raw materials allowing full conformance to individual
client specifications however arduous. Customers can
be assured that their valves are designed and produced
exactly as specified. Delivery is key to our business and
fast track deliveries are essential to our success. As part
of our service LG Valves can provide soft seat to metal
seat conversions to valves not of their manufacture.

Emerson adds
stainless steel
transmitter housing
to its Vortex
flowmeter family
Stainless steel housing increases reliability
and longevity of the Rosemount 8800D
Series in corrosive environments
Emerson Process Management announces the expansion
of its Rosemount 8800D Series of vortex flowmeters
to include stainless steel transmitter housings, which are
often required for applications in corrosive environments.
This new stainless steel housing increases the reliability
and longevity of the transmitter in these environments,
greatly reducing the overall cost of ownership.
The non-clogging, minimal leak point design of the
Rosemount flowmeters is valued by industries such
as offshore oil and gas and marine. The corrosive
environments caused by saltwater and salt in the air
make these industries good candidates for stainless
steel transmitter housings. Typical applications include
high pressure gas or water injection for enhanced oil
recovery. In addition, stainless steel transmitter housings
are ideally suited to food, beverage and life science
applications, where the numerous chemical processes
and clean-in-place solutions can result in corrosion and
premature failure.
The stainless steel transmitter housing is available on the
broad range of Rosemount Vortex flowmeters, including
wafer and flanged meters, dual sensor and Reducer
Vortex flowmeters.
Rosemount 8800D flowmeters are part of Emersons

New Eurocheck non-return valve

range provides reduced cost and
eases installation
Cast iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK has developed an
exclusive new range of versatile, modular non-return valves
The Eurocheck range will significantly reduce customers
stock holding without compromising the flexibility to
quickly respond to design changes, while also reducing
the total cost of valve installations.
The Eurocheck is a swing check valve
manufactured to the requirements of
EN1074-3 for use in both horizontal
and vertical applications. The new
range is available for both water
and sewer applications and is
available in pipe diameters from
80mm to 300mm.
For the first time, the
Eurocheck is supplied with
a universal kit solution
for lever and weight or
lever, weight and guard
applications.
The kits
are universal as they can
be used in either left,
right, vertical or horizontal
orientation, and can be easily
fitted on site once the valve
has been installed, eliminating
the need for valve disassembly
before installation. Valves of this
kind have traditionally been supplied
as a single pre-assembled unit which often
made them heavy and awkward to handle and
thus to manoeuvre into position meaning they were
often disassembled for installation and re-assembled
once installed, doubling the time taken for each valve
installation.
The fact that they were supplied as pre-assembled
units also meant that, to cover all possible orientation
requirements, eight separate products were required.
The universal nature of the new Eurocheck kit halves the
number of stock keeping units to just four.

Previously, converting a valve from free-hanging (base

valve only) to lever and weight or lever, weight and
guard necessitated removing the valve bonnet. This is
now not the case as the free-hanging valve
is supplied with spindle already
located outside the valve
body. The advantages of
this are that the valve
can be converted
in situ and under
pressure. This
means assured
durability and
leak prevention
through nonremoval of the
valve bonnet, and
improved health
and safety as
operators are not in
contact with effluent
during conversions on
sewage valves.
Tara Smith, Valves Product
Manager at Saint-Gobain PAM
UK, explained: Non-return valves are widely
used in both water and sewer applications but
ergonomics and versatility have not always been
top of designers minds.
Now, however, with the new Saint-Gobain PAM UK
Eurocheck non-return valves, specifiers and customers
can enjoy the same high levels of performance alongside
far simpler ordering, easier handling, reduced stock
keeping and more time and cost efficient installations.

Planned maintenance saves costs

Hertel Valve and Rotating Services experience in maintaining and servicing valves
and rotating equipment has been built from working in some of the most demanding
environments
The petrochemical, offshore and power generation
industries require maximum performance and the
maintenance routines Hertel has developed in partnership
with its customers are designed to ensure performance
and reliability. Hertel is an international group that has
been providing industrial maintenance services for over
100 years. Since entering the British market in 1975
Hertel has grown organically, today employing in excess
of 3000 people throughout the key industrial regions in
the UK, in its core services of scaffolding and insulation.
More recently, the company has expanded its scope of
services in specialist areas through strategic acquisitions.
One key acquisition was in 2006 when it bought
Aker Kvaerners Engineering Services workshops and
maintenance business.
For valves, pumps and rotating equipment Hertel has
a Total Asset Management programme, providing a
total life responsibility for all forms of assets enabling
maximum performance through a managed maintenance
routine.
Hertels approach to valves and rotating
equipment helps to ensure maximum uptime, and is a
firm advocate of the companys dedication to building
long-term partnerships.
Clive Burkinshaw of Hertel Valve and Rotating Services
explains: We believe in thinking with our customers,
helping them to reduce the cost of ownership of their
assets. In the majority of cases we find that a repair
can achieve what the customer needs, avoiding the
unnecessary use of new parts.

In these cases, considerable cost savings can be

delivered while extending the assets life cycle when a
planned maintenance programme is in place. We can
identify where a part is under performing, more than
likely due to wear and tear. We can act before there
is more drastic action is needed that could affect the
operation of a plant or facility.
Clive adds; Like any business relationship two-way
communication and trust are key ingredients to establish
a successful relationship between supplier and contractor.
When an on-going relationship is established all historical
job data is stored within a database and this is regularly
reviewed to give Hertel the ability to highlight where
problems are, or could be, happening. Hertel audits each
asset so that stock can be held to quickly obtain should
they be required. This is particularly effective during an
overhaul.

we are able to react quickly, 24-7. With knowledge of the

plant we are able to take the right actions to minimise
downtime. If an OEM part is required it often has a long
lead time, up to 12 weeks, to produce and deliver. By
evaluating the issue to understand the problem, Hertel
is often able to repair the asset to the original product
standard within days.
Hertel operates a transparent pricing structure. Our
philosophy is to develop long-term relationships and to
have an open book policy on costs. This helps us to build
trust and understand our clients business to focus on
achieving cost effective solutions. Often due to on-going
maintenance programmes Hertel is able to bring added
value by repairing rather than replacing equipment to
achieve the same result.
Our experience means that all our maintenance work
meets the guidelines set by the OEM. In addition to the
HSB procedure IQTECH.03, we are audited regularly by
our customers to ensure that we are performing to their
expected standards.
Hertel operates a hub-and-spoke service, with the
central Valve and Rotating workshop based on the Wilton
International Site, Teesside, with dedicated workshops
based throughout the UK.
This allows for flexible
services for routine and urgent services, supported by
the Wilton facility for larger planned operations.

AUMA Launches
Generation .2
The new Generation .2 multi-turn actuator range SA
07.2 16.2 and new actuator controls AC 01.2 have been
launched by AUMA: the products will be ready for order
and delivery from first quarter 2010.
Designed to cater for existing market needs, and next
generation requirements, capabilities include the integration of field devices into Asset Management Systems.
AUMA has introduced a number of enhanced features
and expanded the functionality of its range, while retaining proven design principles. Commenting on incorporating modularity as a fundamental principle of the new
products, and additional advancements, Peter Malus, the
AUMA Product Manager for the actuators, said:
The new Generation .2 devices, both actuators and
controls, are fully compatible with our previous products:
this ensures low-risk investment and guarantees that
we will always be at the forefront of technological
development.
Mechanical enhancements improve positioning accuracy,
the output speed range of modulating actuators and
the extension of the expected actuator lifetime. These
advancements are backed by improved corrosion protection.
One focus of development was to improve device handling. As a result, the handwheel is now activated with
one hand by simply pressing a button; valve connection
is more flexible and a newly designed electrical connection facilitates the linking of cables with large cross sections. Operation is made easier by a new, enlarged and
illuminated graphic display. The display texts are shown
in plain text, available in a wide range of languages.
Graphic display features are provided e.g. torque curves.

Operation, setting, diagnostics and the memorisation of

all actuator data is facilitated wirelessly via the AUMA
PC ToolSuite.
Joachim Rist, the Product Manager of the new AC controls, reports that the innovative developments are the
result of an intensive exchange between valve manufacturers, consultants, plant operators and control/communication system manufacturers. It was recognised that
standards should be followed as closely as possible for
all developments outside of the products new intelligent
functions. For example, the status signals of the AC 01.2
are classified in compliance with NAMUR recommendation NE 107. Consequently, the plant operator receives
clearly interpretable signals from the actuators and all
other field devices and new diagnostic features of the
actuators are supported.
Temperature/vibration sensors and applied torque
recording are used to continuously monitor all parameters which contribute positively to the actuators life. If
an actuator is operated outside the specified operation
conditions, for example with an impermissible high number of starts, the plant operator receives advance information enabling appropriate action to avoid malfunction.
In line with AUMAs previous products, the new controls
are available with different fieldbus interfaces, including
the Profibus DP interface with V2 services.

Through the recent expansion of our valve
services department, we can now offer
relief valve testing supported by trained
technicians to undertake your RV testing
In Situ - Our equipment is certified by
Lloyds to ATEX Directive 94/9/EC.
On-Line Test System for Safety Valves
Pressure Safety Valves are installed on process
equipment to release excess pressure caused by
faulty process operations, external fires and other
hazards. Or to put it simply the safety valve serves
to protect life and property. Failure of pressure
safety valves to function correctly may result in the
serious damage of vessels, exchangers, boilers or
other such critical equipment. It is essential therefore
to maintain pressure safety valves and relief valves in
good condition. Periodic testing is one of the most
important elements you can provide in order to ensure
that the valves function correctly and thus provide the
protection required.

In-Situ Testing
Ideally, the most desirable type of test is one that
subjects the pressure relief valve to the full operating
conditions that it is to endure in service. The MCE
RV test system enables you to test your spring
operated safety valves on site, without interruption to
the process operation. With this (commonly called)
hot testing the safety valve stays on-line and no
dismantling of the valve or more importantly a plant
shutdown is not required.

Emerson introduces new

Fisher Regulator Series
Emerson introduces new Fisher Regulator Series and trim
options that maximise uptime and reduce noise output
EZHSO Series Regulator and Whisper Trim technology
ensure gas delivery with fail-open alternative and more
efficient noise abatement
Emerson Process Management announces the release
of the Fisher EZHSO Series Regulator as well as
Whisper Trim Cage options to the EZH and EZHSO
Series. The EZHSO design incorporates a patentpending spring cartridge that offers a fail-to-open
alternative, ensuring gas delivery and maximising
uptime.
The Whisper Trim technology provides
efficient noise prevention at the source and the cage
can be easily retrofitted in the field.
The Type EZHSO and EZHSO-OSX (slam-shut)
regulators are available in 1, 2, and 3-inch sizes
and provide the same benefits as Emersons proven
Fisher Type EZH regulators. This includes a 103
bar (1500 psig) inlet/outlet rating to meet higher
system requirements and an environmentally friendly,
no-bleed design which eliminates emissions for
higher pressure pipelines. Top-Entry maintenance
reduces the time and expenses required for training,
installation and maintenance, and the bubble-tight
shutoff reduces cost of ownership by precisely
regulating high-pressure transmission lines, providing
consistent reliability of gas delivery and shutoff.

Preventive Maintenance of Valves

with Wachs Exercising Equipment
E.H. Wachs has been manufacturing valve turning equipment for over 40
years; this experience has proved pivotal to producing the equipment that
is available today. From the portable handheld exercisers (Pow-R-Drive II
& RS-2) to the vehicle mounted exercisers (ERV-750 & TM-7) available with
Intelligent Automation. With Intelligent Automation, only the minimum
amount of torque required is applied, virtually eliminating valve breakage. As
it is fully automated, even inexperienced operators can safely free stuck and
neglected valves, without the risk of injury. Wachs VITALS software, which
you can fully integrate with your GIS system, gives you the ability capture
and record critical information on the health of your valves.
Implementing a valve management program to reduce the number of
non-working valves in the system has a direct effect on the reliability of
your system. The reliability of a water distribution system is measured by
its ability to deliver a satisfactory level of service. Reliability is knowing
the system is working correctly, and the ability to consistently deliver an
acceptable quantity and quality of water at a suitable pressure with minimum
interruptions, water quality impacts, inoperable valves and main breaks.

Working valves are critical components of a reliable water system. Valves are
also an important component for providing reliability in the system. When
there is a source of water leakage, valves are used to isolate the leak, or to
make changes in the system to minimise scheduled service interruptions. In
situations where water is flowing outside the pipes, the ability to identify,
locate and operate the least amount of valves allows for isolation of the
smallest area.
This is a key parameter in minimising the number of customers without
water. It is usually when a problem occurs which requires valve interaction
when the water companies realise that the valve was:
Un-locatable
Inaccessible
Inoperable with available equipment
Broken
This reactive method can result in a variety of problems from longer than
necessary service interruptions to major issues caused by uncontrollable
water leakage. The financial implications can be significant. Using a
preventive maintenance program can reduce your long term costs in a
number of ways:
Reduced labour costs
Reduced water loss through leak run time
Expensive valve replacements
Legal costs/Fines

Planning a Preventive Maintenance Programme

One of the major stumbling blocks in developing
and implementing a scheduled preventive maintenance
program for valves is the apparent magnitude of the job.
Regardless of whether the water system is small or large,
the number of valves in the system and the proportion
of workers available to do such preventive maintenance
must be considered. If an unrealistic goal is established
in the beginning, such as attempting to immediately
operate all valves in the system every year, the task is
probably overwhelming. Although this would be an ideal
program, it may be impractical and chances are that such
a program would never be continued. If, on the other
hand, an achievable goal is set, it is far more likely that a
preventive maintenance program will succeed.
Modest beginnings can achieve immediate results. For
example, suppose two workers can be assigned to
the program for 30 days each year when maintenance
requirements are low.
If two workers performed
preventive maintenance on 15 to 25 distribution system
valves a day during these 30 days, the crew would be
able to locate and operate 450 to 750. Regardless of
the magnitude of the overall task, that would mean that
these numbers of valves have been maintained, can be
located and will work when needed. This would be a
significant number of valves in a smaller system or in a
particular area of a larger city.

VMT-1 Valve Maintenance Trailer with TM-7, ERV-750,

Vacuum & water jet system

Before a program is implemented, a list of priorities

should be developed so that a pilot program for valve
exercising can pinpoint those areas that are more likely
to have immediate problems. It might be decided to
begin with the largest part of the system, based on
consumption. The oldest part of the system might be
judged of highest priority because these valves might
not have been operated for the longest period of time.
Perhaps the part of the system that serves the most
critical customers, such as hospitals and industrial users,
would receive the highest priority. Whatever the criteria
used and regardless of how much time and manpower
are available, the result will be valves that are known to
function. A significant improvement in the system can be
achieved immediately if the program is focused on the
most troublesome areas.

Reduce safety risks

Reduce valve damage
Justify a valve exercising program
Turn 3 times more valves per day versus manual
wrenches
Reduce labour requirements
Exercise valves in hard to reach locations
Eliminate operator fatigue and back injury
Facilitate emergency water shut-offs.

The benefits from the Valve Maintenance and Exercising

Program are:
Accurate records of valve location, rotation
Protection of community and utility investments with
extended valve life
Eventual reduction in labour
Controlled valve repair which can be done in noncritical periods
Immediate isolation of main breaks affecting as few
customers as possible
Confidence in the system.

Mechanising the process through the use of maintenance

machines increases efficiency. Pipe locators, vacuum
valve box cleanout systems and valve operating machines
significantly increase the amount of work which can be
achieved by reducing valve maintenance time by 50 to 60
percent or more on average.
Mechanised equipment can also help:

Another positive outcome of a systematic valve

maintenance program is the development of files or a
computerised data base containing all the necessary
information on each valve, as well as a map.
No matter what kinds of valves are installed in a system,
all of them need to be operated periodically. Valves in
a distribution system are too important to be allowed
to sit idle with no maintenance for a number of years.
This almost guarantees that they will be inoperable when
needed. A practical valve maintenance program can be
designed for initial implementation at a low cost and will
ultimately result in cost savings for the water system and
more reliable service for its customers.

AUMA supports Scottish

Water scheme
Two years since AUMA completed
a site survey at Scottish Waters
Castle Moffat water treatment
works (WTW), the actuator supplier
reports on how its modular actuation
technology has met the challenges of
the scheme. As part of a 4 million
upgrade of the WTW, improvements
have been made to the facilitys valve
and water processing operations
and AUMA actuation technology
successfully supported the project.
AUMA was selected to replace 84
pneumatic actuators installed on 14
pressurised sand filters at Castle
Moffat WTW.
The AS range of
actuators were provided as, with
a Profibus interface that enables
remote mounting of local control
stations, they met the demands of
the space constraints of the site.
Commenting on the main challenges
of the contract Steve Holman, a
Technical Sales Engineer for AUMA
said:
The work was completed in a staged
process whilst the plant was live.
We were given access to one filter
per day. We removed the existing
actuators for each filter and replaced
these with new technology: it was
imperative for the plant that the filter
was brought back online at the end
of each day.
A major concern was the successful
integration of a new Profibus process which, to ensure continued operation of the plant, had to be seamlessly amalgamated with an existing
telemetry system. By utilising the
AUMA plug and socket, which houses
a Profibus card, it was possible to
prove both actuator operation and
Profibus network and therefore allay
any fears of commissioning problems
once the plant was live.

Scheduled and emergency

valve maintenance
How high quality aftercare is all part of the service at Koso Kent Introl
Its highly likely that at some stage in its life, a control,
choke or rotary valve will need to be either repaired or
replaced. Although this might be during a scheduled
shutdown, there might be an occasion when a valve fails
in service, and until it can be fixed, this might mean a
costly period of down-time.
Martin Broadbent, Spares and Service Manager at Koso
Kent Introl (KKI) knows all about the challenges and
frustrations that such emergency situations can create.
The failure of a single valve can result in a whole

operation grinding to a halt. Our clients need to be

sure that they can be up and running again as soon as
possible, with no risk of the failure happening again any
time soon.

Service

Martin heads up the aftercare team at KKI, and supports

the resolution of such incidents, week in, week out. His
team is ready to travel the world at a moments notice,
to tackle the problem valve on-site and get the process
running again with minimum delay. Members of the
team have travelled from their UK base in Brighouse,
West Yorkshire to client sites as far afield as Australia
and Alaska - and every point in-between.
In one notable incident, following the failure of a valve
on an offshore oil rig, the client had initially estimated
a 9 days unproductive downtime; Martin recalls that
the team worked round the clock to ensure the job was
completed within one week. He is adamant that no
other service provider could have turned the job around
so quickly and to such a high standard.
But life within the service team isnt all about crisis management. Supporting scheduled shutdown programmes
is a core activity, too. In fact, this month the team is
busy supporting the maintenance, repair and upgrade
of over 100 valves from one of its key clients during a
three-week shutdown programme. In a project run with
military precision in conjunction with the client, the service team is focused on delivering the valves back in as
new condition, on time and within budget.

Martin is justifiably proud of the fact that the KKI

philosophy of total quality is as embedded into aftercare
as it is in the design and production of new valves. He
explains: The two teams, service and manufacturing,
often work together on aftercare client challenges.
This combination of expertise ensures quality, reduces

risk, controls cost and can provide a much faster

turnaround than could be expected elsewhere.
KKIs longevity certainly helps in the delivery of an
exemplary service. Records exist for every valve
ever produced and serviced in the factorys 40-year
history. This unique record of the life of a valve,
along with the service conditions in which it is
operating, means that the team knows exactly what
they are dealing with before they begin to service
it. There can be no more reassuring fact to a client
looking for a safe pair of hands.
If you would like advice on any aspect of servicing

New Explosive
Decompression
Perfluoroelastomer
for Oil and Gas Valves
High performance seals specialist, Precision
Polymer Engineering (PPE) has announced
a new explosive decompression resistant
perfluoroelastomer for seals used in ultraaggressive, oil and gas processing applications.
The Perlast G92E elastomer combines high
levels of chemical resistance with an increased
explosive decompression capability, setting a new
performance standard for perfluoroelastomer
seals in valves in oil and gas exploration and
processing.
Perlast G92E is part of the EnDura range of
elastomers designed specifically for the oil
and gas offshore industry. The polymers high
fluorine content renders it inert to a wide range
of liquids and gases such as hydrogen sulphide
and methane encountered during oil and gas
operations.
Suitable for environments up to
260OC, G92E has tested successfully in a range of
high temperature, high pressure and aggressive
gas conditions, including those described in
NORSOK M710, and is currently undergoing
further industry and international explosive
decompression standards testing.

EnDura high performance elastomers

for oil and gas
EnDura is a family of different elastomer types
that offer superior chemical resistance compared
to conventional explosive decompression grades,
greater high and low temperature capabilities
and are tested to the major international explosive decompression standards such as NOROSK
M-710. The EnDura range includes HNBR, TFE/P,
and FKM elastomers.

Perlast G92E is an important development

which expands the Endura ranges capability
into the upper end of the performance range for

Flowserve
Cartridge
Valves
used in Thorp
Nuclear Project
Flowserve Flow Control has supplied sixteen
Worcester F911 cartridge valves for a new Medium
Active Salt Free Evaporator (MASFE) installation at
the Thorp nuclear reprocessing plant in the North
West of England.
The MASFE which replaced existing 10-year
old equipment plays an important role at
Thorp, primarily processing medium active
liquors, concentrating them down prior to further
evaporation and vitrification into glass.
To ensure the valves can be maintained efficiently
and safely, they are supplied within a control
bulge, a pre-fabricated and tested extension of
the cell. They were housed within a control cabinet
and are operated by extension stems, varying in
length between 600mm-900mm, that pass through
steel shielding as well as the roof of the cabinet.
With the valves installed at an angle, two universal
joints are used on each stem to ensure alignment.

Emerson expands dirty service

control valve solutions
Expanded Fisher line offers cavitation control for a broad range of
severe service applications
Emerson Process Management has expanded the
line of Fisher dirty service control valve solutions
to include the NotchFlo DST valve and Fisher DST
control valve trim. With the expanded line, Emerson
is able to provide specific solutions that both increase
process availability and reduce maintenance costs for
a broad range of severe service applications. The lineup offers excellent cavitation control for applications
known to contain entrained particulate that would
damage standard trim components and can be used in
the hydrocarbon, power, chemical, pulp and paper, and
metals and mining industries.

Space considerations, as well as ease of repair,

were an important element in valve selection for the
control cabinet and the Flowserve cartridge valves
four of which were automated by Norbro pneumatic
actuators were chosen due to their cost-effective,
top-entry design and the lower torque requirement
when compared with competing designs.

The Fisher NotchFlo DST valve is a multi-stage (3, 4, or

6 stage) anti-cavitation valve available in NPS 1 to 8, in
Class 300 -1500 globe and Class 600 - 2500 angle (DN
25 -200, PN50 to PN260 Globe and PN110 to PN420
angle) that can be used in severe service applications.
The Fisher DST control valve trim is a multi-stage (2, 3,
4, 5 or 6 stage) anti-cavitation trim available in NPS 1 to
16, in Class 300 - 2500 (DN 25 - 400, PN50 to PN420).
Both the NotchFlo and DST are frequently used in high
pressure drop applications up to 290 bar (4200 psi)
in the chemical, refining, oil and gas production, and
power industries.
In addition to the expanded line-up of Fisher dirty
service control valves, the Fisher Cavitrol III Trim
with improved sealing technologies is available. It
is a multi-stage (2 or 3 stage) trim available in NPS
1 to 8x6, in Class 900 - 2500 (DN 25 - 200x150,
PN150 to PN420) that can be used in severe service
applications where plug tip erosion and seal wear are
issues. The Fisher Cavitrol III Trim is frequently used in
pump recirculation and start-up systems in the power,
process, oil production, chemical refining, and other
industries.

Steam Today and Steam Tomorrow

Brian Johnston from Spirax Sarco discusses in this 3rd and final
article in the series, how the flexibility and versatility of steam is
demonstrated by looking at some of its potential future uses
In article 1 (Valve User Issue Eleven), the traditional uses
of steam were outlined power generation, heating,
humidification, sterilization and cooking. Because steam
is used in these applications in almost all manufacturing
industries, any increase in global industrial output will
see steams use continue to grow, with only direct use as
a means of space heating likely to see any decline.
So the future of steam is secure and further strengthened
by some of the newer applications to which this versatile
medium is being applied. Here are some examples...

Transport

You may have seen a lot of publicity recently over the

British-built steam car that set a new land speed record
for such a vehicle of 148 mph.
Another example of the versatility of steam, but not an
indicator that well be driving steam powered cars like
this in future. 1000 litres of water used in 25 minutes
isnt a very attractive mpg feature! However, steam
could very well have a place in transport of the future in
many different ways.
In internal combustion engines, most of the energy in the
fuel is lost as exhaust heat, with only a small percentage
(approx 30%) used for propulsion.
Systems are being developed (and used) today to use
steam to recover heat from engine exhausts. The
recovered steam can be used either to drive the vehicles
electrics through a turbine driven alternator, or to run
refrigeration plant on trucks. This latter application is
already happening on reefers (refrigerated containers).

72 VALVEuser SPRING 2010

VALVE USER

When the vehicle is being driven, a heat exchanger on

the exhaust produces steam, which is then stored in a
pressure vessel. This stored steam is used to run the
refrigeration plant whilst the truck is parked, resulting
in less pollution and less noise, a major concern at truck
stops.
This ability to store energy is also being used on
locomotives. No, not a re-emergence of dirty smoky
steam engines, but rather than having a fired boiler,
todays steam locomotive is simply a large pressure
vessel, charged with steam when the vehicle is stationary.
Once pressurised, the engine is capable of providing
significant power output, over reasonable distances.
A major application is on chemical plants where other
forms of propulsion (electric, diesel or a conventional
fired boiler) could all create an explosion hazard.

Energy Storage

Steams ability to store energy (as described above)

means it can be used as a battery, being charged up
when surplus energy is available. This could be waste
heat, or energy from an intermittent supply such as
wind, solar or wave power.
The same storage technology is used in an accumulator
- a device to help smooth out fluctuations in demand in
a steam system, so ensuring that the correct quality of
steam is supplied at minimum stress on the boiler. Not
a new technology but one with growing interest as boiler
sizes reduce and their internal ability to store energy
diminishes.

to prevent goodness and flavour being lost from the food

during traditional cooking processes such as boiling.
With such growing use, is a domestic scale, steam
operated, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system now a
vision for the future?

Clean Steam

Steam boiler with local accumulator

Cooling

It may seem strange to consider steam as a means of

providing chilled water but absorption and steam jet
systems both use steam to create the refrigeration effect.
The steam is used in an absorption unit to heat the working
solution (generally lithium bromide) to concentrate it. In
a steam jet system, a steam ejector is used to create the
vacuum necessary in the flash chamber.
Again, not new technologies, but with significantly
increased usage of electricity to produce cooling, electrical
distribution networks are struggling to cope during hot
periods. In many countries, peak electrical load now
occurs during summer months, not winter.
Many industrial processes involve both heating and
cooling, food manufacture being a good example. Steam
produced from waste heat is an economical way of
providing the chilled water needed for the cooling cycle.

Steam in the Domestic Environment

Traditionally steam has been seen as very much an

industrial fluid, but even today, we are seeing steam being
used more in the domestic environment. One such use is
steam in washing machines. The claim is that the steam
reduces water consumption
(a growing concern) and
improves the cleaning effect,
plus the finished clothes
require less ironing!
Irons themselves are changing. Its more common now
to see an iron coupled to
a steam generator, helping
to produce more steam and
speed up the ironing process.
Steam is used to clean carpets and curtains, with special machines for these now
readily available. It is used in
steamers and steaming ovens

Steams ability to cook, sterilize and humidify means it has

a significant place in modern industries such as Healthcare,
Food & Beverage and Pharmaceuticals. Here the quality
of the steam is important, with a growing requirement
for clean or even pure steam. Clean steam is produced
from De-Ionised or Reverse Osmosis feedwater and would
be used where the steam comes into direct contact with
a product or process. Pure steam is produced from even
higher quality water containing no bacteria or pyrogens,
being referred to as WFI (Water For Injection).
These higher grades of steam are produced from
generating equipment very different from a conventional
boiler, as can be seen from the illustration opposite.

Other more obscure uses

Superheated steam (steam heated above its saturation

temperature) is now being used in geothermal plants as
an alternative to rotary drilling. Spallation is the name
of the process, where superheated steam, coming into
contact with crystalline rocks, causes the grains of rock to
expand and crack. Small particles, called spalls split off.
Drilling to depths of 9000m is possible.
Again associated with extracting renewable energy, steam
is the working fluid in OTEC applications where the
temperature gradient across the ocean depths in the
tropics is enough to produce energy and desalinated
water.
As long ago as 1946, Sir Oliver Lyle, in his introduction to
The Efficient Use of Steam, wrote,
Steam is industrys most wonderful, flexible and adaptable
tool. Many other tools have emerged over the past 60
years but as we have seen, steam is still crucially important
to industry due to its flexibility and adaptability. It really is
a fluid of the 21st century!

Control Valve Solutions lift

off with great success
By Mick Beavers Managing Director

CVS Valve Testing

Concentrated effort and application of skill

2009 was a year to remember for Control Valve Solutions.

The company started trading on 25th March and within 10
months we had achieved what seemed impossible at the
outset. We finished the year as a credible supplier to the
industry, achieved ISO9001:2008 certification and FPAL
registration, joined the UK Oil and Gas Association and of
course were accepted as a member of the BVAA, something
which has filled me with pride. Looking back over those
short months as a member of this association, I have much
to smile about, although it didnt always feel so good as we
tackled our challenges.
As important as achieving the certifications, registrations and
acceptance into the industry, we have launched our offshore
services division and opened our extensive workshops in
Aberdeen. This has allowed us to undertake projects such as
improving the efficiency of a CHP plant by an unprecedented
factor, successfully complete our first major outage and sign
four major contracts with offshore operators.
I start 2010 by looking back on our achievements in this
short period and trying to put them into some kind of order
while asking myself how we managed to achieve so much
in such a short space of time. I have realised that the skills
and knowledge surrounding us within this industry are the
foundation we rely on; we all have ambition and drive but
if we dont have the resource, tools and support we need,
those ambitions will remain unfulfilled. It is thanks to many
members of the BVAA that I am in a position to write my
first article for this publication, and I would like to thank you

all for your support, your help and the belief you
have shown in me over the last 10 months.
Planning is everything
When the pressure is on to deliver, having what
you need when you need it is vital. Control Valve
Solutions Ltd has achieved this by creating our own
information management tool and placing it at the
heart of our operation. CVS Manager was launched
in November 2009 and has enabled us to grow
from strength to strength whilst retaining control
of the rapidly growing scope of activity. From
meetings to purchase orders, from quotations to a
client valve management programme, CVS Manager
provides us with the information we need in a very
efficient manner. Unlike companies which invest

in administrative staff, we have kept

our operation lean, allowing us to
pass the benefit of low overheads
and minimal bureaucracy on to our
clients. Our independent Strategic
Business Consultant Graham Puntis
of 318 Business Resource estimates
that our software is doing the job
of four people. CVS Manager allows
us to deliver a fast, effective and
bespoke service to all of our clients;
the efficiency and reliability of our
operations has impressed the largest
of clients.
Despite, or perhaps
because of, this we are still able to
offer the unique personal service and
flexibility that is so uncommon in
business these days.

Complete Valve/Actuator assemblies emphasising integration

Test facility launch

Comprehensive and reliable testing is the single most
important factor in making sure a valve will operate
successfully upon commissioning. We have invested a
substantial amount of money in our control valve test
rig. Using this, CVS conducts seat leakage tests to FCI
70-2 and hydrostatic testing to ANSI ISA 75.19.01-2007
on control valves up to 12" at test pressures of up to
15000psi, with a maximum flange rating of 1500lb. Using
a range of metering techniques developed in-house we
are able to conduct full CV testing on problematic valves
to ensure that the valve meets all performance criteria
once it leaves our facility.
A huge advantage to our
clients who would normally need to travel to our facility
to conduct witness testing is the remote monitoring
facility for the test rig. Using this, the client has access
to live video footage of the testing via a number of
webcams offering different viewing angles, and has
access to live test data streamed directly to a dashboard
display on their office PC screen. Our in-house testing
has been in demand by many of our clients since its
commissioning, all of whom are reaping the very real
benefits of the tests conducted.
Process simulations impress clients
Testing alone will not guarantee the in-situ performance
of the valve, but by simulating the conditions the valve
is expected to see during its service life we can offer
tuning and characterising services. This will ensure
that the valve behaves as expected once in the field.
We have completed many such projects for offshore
companies since we established the company and have
just completed testing in our facility on three severe
service valves which we have upgraded. These valves
have high differential pressures across them.
The
upgrade involved removal of the old actuators and
fitment of new Fisher actuators complete with DVC6000
smart positioners having advanced diagnostic software.
By using Emersons software we have been able to
tune the valves characteristics under simulated process
conditions in our workshops, leading to improved
process on the platform. Using nitrogen as the simulated

flow medium, we achieved the full differential and were

able to prove the system prior to commissioning, saving
the client valuable time and money. Working closely
with companies like Emerson Process Management we
can consistently offer efficient, effective packages that
work seamlessly together under the most demanding
conditions.
Creating value through alliances
We have had so many success stories over the past
ten months. These range from enabling food plants
to produce more than ever before; a theme park being
able to offer a ride that now pulls maximum g-force;
to offshore oil companies experiencing better control
and a more stable process. By working closely with our
suppliers, we have also been able to offer some truly
unique services. Copes Vulcan have enabled us to offer
solutions for a problem that previously caused hundreds
of thousands of pounds in lost production and downtime.
By working together we were able to engineer a new
design of trim that enables the control valve in question
to operate efficiently under two different process
conditions at either end of the valves travel. In another
case we solved a problem with emissions on various
control valves by using James Walkers Supagraph
control, which we have now standardised on most
offshore applications. Control Valve Solutions have also
teamed up with an isolation valve company that offers
zero leakage guaranteed for seven years through a metal
to metal seat. We have seen some real interest in this
product which we will be officially launching in March.

High-Tech Upgrade
Rotork valve actuators assist high-tech upgrade at sewage
membrane treatment plant
The Wessex Water sewage treatment works at Swanage
utilises state-of-the-art membrane bioreactor technology
to produce high quality effluent that exceeds EU standards
and is cleaner than the sea into which it is discharged.
Now nearing completion, a major plant upgrade at
the site is introducing automation and energy saving
measures, whilst increasing the size of the membrane
treatment plant to provide spare capacity for future
demand. Central to the upgrade, Profibus networkenabled Rotork IQT intelligent electric actuators have
been installed to operate butterfly and plug valves on
new pipework throughout the plant.
Swanage STW treats sewage for a population of around
10,000 which can more than double when the area is busy
with holidaymakers. Following preliminary screening and
grit removal, sewage enters Kubota membrane plants
installed in six large tanks for biological treatment and
disinfection. The pores in the membranes are so small
that they can prevent microscopic bacteria and viruses
from passing through. The upgrade involves increasing
the number of membrane packs in each tank to thirty-

80 VALVEuser SPRING 2010

VALVE USER

six, thus considerably increasing the treatment capacity

without exceeding the confines of the existing works
footprint. Automation of the treatment process also
enables it to run with increased efficiency and reduced
energy consumption.
On each of the membrane plants, the Rotork IQT actuators
operate inlet isolation and outlet modulating valves for
the sewage, together with air, sodium hypochlorite and
wash water injection valves. Additional IQT actuators
control the permeate isolation valves used for automated
sequential flushing to maintain membrane efficiency. In
total, fifty-one actuators are installed on each tank to
provide automatic sequencing of the sewage treatment,
membrane cleaning and backwashing processes.
Fourteen Profibus-DP two-wire networks link the actuators to PLCs in the sites central MCC. These are controlled by a PLC and SCADA system written by Wessex
Waters in-house Automation Team. The control PLC is a
twin CPU configuration, with one dedicated to the control
and monitoring of more than 300 actuators, whilst the
other runs the complex automation process, resulting in

Rotork IQT actuators installed on new pipework in the chambers between the
membrane plants, operating the sewage inlet and outlet, air, sodium hypochlorite,

the collection of control, status and full diagnostic data
from each actuator, without any PLC speed or memory
limitations. Diagnostic information is available, locally
at the valve or nearby HMI, on the site SCADA system
and at the regional operation centre at Bath. Remote
diagnosis is a cost effective method of maintenance and
service because the right operational staff can be sent to
site when required.
With the high level of process automation enabled
by the Rotork actuators, come the added benefits of
process integrity, audit ability and highly reliable and
accurate process control. Running costs are expected
to reduce due to more effective control of the plant,
saving electrical power, cleaning agents and water.
The effective use of Profibus technology has allowed
significant installation savings in cabling, terminations,
PLC hardware and labour.
The Damar Group is the principal contractor for mechanical and electrical installation at the Swanage upgrade
project, including the on-site fabrication and installation
of pipework and actuated valves. The project manager
is Wessex Engineering and Construction Services and
the design consultant is Mott MacDonald. The Rotork

ASCO Numatics expands range

of miniature solenoid valves

New G" version joins the existing G1/8" range of 256/356 series valves with brass or

256/356 series subminiature solenoid valves

for demanding applications

ASCO Numatics announces a G" version of its

popular 256/356 series of sub-miniature solenoid
valves for demanding applications. The new valves
feature easy installation and maintenance, with
the operator being dismountable to facilitate
cleaning and replacement. The standard FPM
disc (Viton) is compatible with a wide range of
chemicals and fully complies with Restriction of
Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations.
The G" versions joins the existing G1/8" range to
provide a complete offering of harmonised valves
with brass or stainless steel bodies.
The new G" series 256/356 features a builtin manual override on most orifice sizes and a
stainless steel core tube which provides exceptional
resistance to humidity and corrosive atmospheres.
Featuring a service life of up to 20 million cycles,
the valves are designed for installations that
require fast (5-10ms) and frequent operation.
Typical applications include shut-off, dosing, filling
and actuator piloting in machines used on sanitary
duties as well as in industrial laundries, food
processes and on compressors.
Power consumption for the 256/356 range is just
3.5W for holding in AC, (a reduction of 30 per

cent compared to equivalent ranges) and 5W for

hot power in DC. Two types of coils (CM22 and
C25A) cover the entire range. Mounting is quick
and easy using the two M3 fixing holes under
the valve body. The square core reduces friction,
stops lime scale build-up and prevents the core
malfunctioning when used with contaminated
fluids. The built-in double bumper, top shock
absorber reduces noise and prevents hammering
of the core surface.
The range includes 2/2 Normally Closed (NC) with
orifice diameters of 1.6, 2.4, 4 and 5mm, and 3/2
NC with 1.6 and 2.4mm orifices. Other versions
(for solenoid pilot valves) include 3/2 NC in brass
or stainless steel with a 1.6mm orifice and the
choice of a straight or 90 elbow adapter. Options
include operators for potentially explosive dust
atmosphere Zone 22, operators for potentially
explosive dust or gas atmosphere Zone 1/21 and
valves for use in controlling oxygen.

Stewarts - Swivemas Close Couple System

Stewarts unique integral Swivemas joint allows close coupling of virtually any
of our range of valves and pressure gauges and accessories.
Stewarts Swivemas Close Couple
Systems crevice free pressure tight
metal-to-metal seal, works without
the use of tape. This also allows the
gauge to be locked in any 360 Degree
orientation and also incorporates a
fixed collar, anti extrusion ring and
secondary O ring seal.
Pressure joints can be made, broken
then remade and still retain full
pressure seal integrity. This reduces
the number of gauge-to-valve
joints to only one thereby helping
to meet environmental concerns by
preventing fugitive emissions.
The Swivemas is suitable for high
pressure/temperature applications,
its maximum working pressure
is 700 bar (10000 psi) and it is
hydrostatically tested to 1.5 times
maximum working pressure, with

higher pressures available on request.

Stewarts Swivemas Close Couple
System comes complete with a trace
code on the body, with material
certificates available for all wetted
parts on request. The Swivemas
is available in a variety of materials,
stainless steel, monel, hastalloy,
inconel etc and can be supplied to
NACE MR-01-75 latest edition.
The bleed hole facility gives warning
of incorrect mating of cone faces
whilst mechanical integrity is still
maintained whilst infinite Valve/
Gauge/Accessory combinations gives
significant weight and space savings.
