isaretiredGeneralManagerofSouthernRailways,hadstudiedinJamalpurBihar,andhismotherSusheela
wasahousewifeandchess/film/clubaficionadoandaninfluentialsocialite.
Anandistheyoungestof3children.Heis11yearsyoungerthanhissisterand13yearsyoungerthanhis
brother.Hiselderbrother,ShivakumarisamanageratCromptonGreavesinIndiaandhiseldersister,
Anuradha,isaprofessorintheUnitedStatesattheUniversityofMichigan.[10][11]
AnandlearntchessfromagesixfromhismotherandaclosefamilyfriendnamedDeepaRamakrishnan.[12]

Anand'sriseintheIndianchessworldwasmeteoric.Nationallevelsuccesscameearlyforhimwhenhe
wontheNationalSubJuniorChessChampionshipwithascoreof9/9in1983attheageoffourteen.He
becametheyoungestIndiantowinthetitleofInternationalMasterattheageoffifteen,in1984.Attheage
ofsixteenhebecamethenationalchesschampionandwonthattitletwomoretimes.Heplayedgamesat
blitzspeed.In1987,hebecamethefirstIndiantowintheWorldJuniorChessChampionship.In1988,at
theageofeighteen,hebecameIndia'sfirstGrandmasterbywinningtheShaktiFinanceInternationalchess
tournamentheldinCoimbatore,India.HewasawardedPadmaShriattheageof18.
IntheWorldChessChampionship1993cycleAnandqualifiedforhisfirstCandidatesTournament,
winninghisfirstmatchbutnarrowlylosinghisquarterfinalmatchtoAnatolyKarpov.[27]
In199495AnandandGataKamskydominatedthequalifyingcyclesfortherivalFIDEandPCAworld
championships.IntheFIDEcycle(FIDEWorldChessChampionship1996),Anandlosthisquarterfinal
matchtoKamskyafterleadingearly.[28]Kamskywentontolosethe1996FIDEchampionshipmatch
