FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

IMLS ANNOUNCES GRANT OF $142,480 TO THE DUSABLE MUSEUM
Award to Support Museums Newest Exhibition
Chicago, IL. (20 August 2015) --- The Institute of Museum and Library Sciences
(IMLS) has awarded the DuSable Museum of African American History a grant for
$142,480.00. This grant which covers a two-year period is one of 44 grants awarded
in 2015 by IMLS for Museum Grants for African American History and Culture
(AAHC), Spark! Ignition Grants for Museums, and Native American/Native
Hawaiian Museum Services (NANH).
The Grant will be used for the development of audience engagement strategies for the
DuSables new exhibition, Freedom, Resistance and the Journey Toward Equality, to
attract new audiences to the Museum. When we invest in museums, the real
beneficiaries are local communities, said IMLS Acting Director Maura Marx. The
award will fund a project that will test creative solutions to the Museums challenges,
strengthen museum operations and support the stewardship of our nations cultural
heritage.
Freedom, Resistance and the Journey Toward Equality is scheduled to open at the
DuSable Museum on August 28, 2015. The exhibition will be one of the largest
permanent installations ever curated by the DuSable Museum of African American
History and shall break new ground for Chicago audiences. Drawing upon a large
percentage of the artifacts, art, documents and archival videos and images from
DuSables permanent collection, this exhibition will present visitors with some of the
most abhorrent and regrettable aspects of American history, but also the strength,
leadership and resilience of African Americans who persevered oppression and injustice
to shape a new path for this nation.
