SCREAM (1996)
It may be a little too clot with blood now to see -- given the less
than killer sequels and the countless copycat teen horror flicks
in the late 90s/2000s -- but SCREAM was groundbreaking for
the horror genre upon its release. Heavily influenced by slashers
of the late 70s/80s it singlehandedly ushered in the return of
the popular horror sub-genre. And yet, at the same time, it took
a new stab at the rules (the virginal final girl, the bait and
switch with the killers identity, eff and youll die, etc.). And to
top it all off, a master of horror himself, the late Wes Craven
sat behind the camera to riff on the very subgenre he helped
pioneer. 10/6
HOUSE OF WAX 3D (1953)
Back in the early 50s, 3D was something of a nine days wonder. Within a year, the fad faded, thanks to lots of mediocre
quickies. But one that transcended the trend was Vincent Prices
HOUSE OF WAX, a nifty thriller adapted from Lionel Atwill
and Fay Wrays 33 hit THE MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM. If you saw HOUSE OF WAX in 3D -- it was the first
major 3D feature photographed in color -- you were impressed
by director Andre de Toths expert use of the format (even
more impressive when you learn that de Toth was blind in one
eye and couldnt actually see any of the 3D effects he was staging). If you saw HOUSE OF WAX without 3D, you still got a
classy, memorably creepy horror show. 10/8
CARRIE (1976)
We have Stephen King and Brian DePalma to thank for ruining
proms for popular kids for ever and ever! Sissy Spacek makes
Carrie a truly frail creature, whose wide eyes are so much like a
cat caught in the light, youd rather keep your distance to avoid
the scratch. Enduring the humiliation that is the true stuff of
teenage girl nightmares. 10/10
THE MUTILATOR (1984)
By sword. By pick. By axe. BYE BYE!! Easily one of the most
deranged trash-slashers of 1984, THE MUTILATOR is a feelbad, coming-of-age violence machine that lives up to its name
ten times over. Feeling like it was assembled by a schizophrenic
on a meth binge and oozing with chaotic gore and creamy
synths, THE MUTILATOR is one of the last undiscovered
treasures from the golden age slasher boom. 10/17
THE EXORCIST (1973)
Anchored by a quartet of brilliant performers (Ellen Burstyn,
Max Von Sydow, Linda Blair and Jason Miller), the film feels
like an intimate play moreso than an epic horror film. This
makes the primal fear of a single mother having a possessed
daughter to be all the more intensified and personal. The setup
is simple, but the execution is flawless. Few films seek out to
achieve the emotional goals of THE EXOCIST and even fewer
accomplish them. 10/31
