English (408) Preparation for TOEIC


Course Description:
This course introduces students to the language skills of TOEIC (Test
of English for International Communication), which measures real
world communication skills and is one of the requirements for
getting a job nowadays. It is geared towards enhancing the
listening, grammatical structures and reading comprehension of
students. It also aims at introducing students to the American
business culture and contexts.
Text Book:
Target Score: A communicative course for TOEIC Test Preparation,
Second Edition. Charles Talcott & Graham Tullis, Cambridge
University Press, 2008.
Objectives: By the end of the course, students will
1) Be familiar with the directions and test-taking strategies for all sections of
the TOEIC test.
2). To solve listening, sentence completion, error identification, and short
readings for the easy to moderate in difficulty TOEIC test questions.
3). To apply existing English abilities, TOEIC knowledge, and test-taking
strategies to TOEIC practice tests.
4). Be prepared with a general knowledge of English.
5). Apply the above skills to a TOEIC test

Evaluation:
Course Work:

30 marks =
20 marks: listening test before mid term and/or end of
term exam exam;
10 marks: Participation and attendance
30 marks: Mid Term exam
40 marks: End of term exam

As indicated above, this is a tentative calendar. You are free to rearrange the sequence of the unit according to your perspective. In
the meantime, please make sure that you complete units s1-3 before
mid-term exam and units 4-6 before end of term exam..
Since pictures are main part of the TOEIC, and essential at the
Snapshot section, we will either (a) scan the pictures of the book
and send it as soft copy to show to students; or (b) download a soft
copy of the book which Ahmed and I are trying to do.
