Costly Mistakes hand Sydney

Wellington,NZ | Critical mistakes cost the Wellington
Diesels badly and in the mind of their Head Coach Nick
Flemming those errors decided the match as the
Wellington Diesels went down to the Sydney Blues 13-10.
The Diesels handed the ball over to Sydney via
tow fumbles and an Interception. Scott Baitiri fumbled as
the Diesels had made their first decent drive of the game
and he lost the ball at the Sydney 5 yard line costing the
home side a late field goal at the end of the half. Rodney
Williams then threw a pick on the second play from
scrimmage for the second half as the home side tried to
kick start its offense but worst of all saw David Henaway
monstered by Safety Mike Hodge, losing the ball on
Wellingtons final possession, one in which they still had a
chance to win the game.
Hodge was outstanding today. He made a great
pick on Williams and then won the game with his
crunching tackle on Heneway. The ball just floated. It
seemed to stay in the air for a long time Hodge said of
his pick but was even more contrite about the fumble.
Every play man you just try and hit them as hard as you
can. The timing was just right on that one.
The timing was also right for Quarterback Peter
Harper who took on the pressure defence right from the
get go. Seeing both Safeties crashing into the box Harper
unleashed a 67 yard pass to Marquise Lee who won the
battle for the ball and went all the way for the games first
touchdown. Harper gambled again on the next drive but
this time Casey Harris won the dual and he forced the only
Blues turnover of the game. Still the deep balls had from
harper had made their point.
In windy conditions Sydney Kicker Mike Williams
also proved his worth when he nailed a long 45 yard field
goal into the wind. The ball wobbled around but got over
with inches to spare. Williams then added another field
goal in the third quarter to move out to a 13-0 lead.
Scott Baitiri crashed through some defence to
score and then Jay Hlad chased in on the Diesels
momentum with a field goal reducing the lead to just 3
points. I thought we were the better team. I thought the
result was completely in our hands and we shot ourselves
in the foot Coach Nick Flemming said. Hopefully we can
learn from it but right now this was a missed opportunity.
Sydney move on but the news was not all good
as star Rookie Running Back Dane Leatigaga left the game
with a broken collarbone and will not be back again this
season.
