200 YEARS OF ROYAL ARCH MASONRY

This is the first in a brief synopsis of the history of the establishment of Capitular Masonry
in America, and its subsequent movement into the Ohio Country and organization of the
Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masonry in Ohio.
The Grand Chapter of Royal Arch masons will celebrate their 200th anniversary throughout
this Capitular year 2015-2016, while New Carlisle Chapter will be celebrating 162 years of
existence. American Masonry enjoys the distinction of possessing the oldest minutes of the
actual conferring of the Royal Arch Degree in America. In 1753, the Lodge at
Fredericksburg, Virginia (Washingtons Lodge), meeting under ancient customs, without
a charter, and apparently established only a short time before, met on December 22 and
conferred the degree on three brethren. It is said to have been exemplified by members of
a British Army Lodge who were then present in Fredericksburg. The part played by British
Army Lodges in establishing Freemasonry in the colonies is known to have been
considerable, and it is only the lack of documentation which presents us from assigning
them a more conspicuous part in the development of Royal Arch Masonry. We do know that
the Royal Arch, along with Ancient Craft masonry, spread alongside one another rather
rapidly throughout the colonies.
Freemasonry came to Ohio with the first pioneers who settled the Northwest Territory.
Many were members of Masonic lodges in their homes on the Atlantic seaboard and the
desire to incorporate Freemasonry in the new society they were establishing in the west
found early expression. Within just a few years of the initial settlement in the Ohio country,
lodges were formed in Marietta, Cincinnati, Worthington, and Chillicothe, each of which
were early seats of Royal Arch in Ohio.
Oct. 13 @ 7:00 Mark Master Degree - All Chapter members are encouraged to attend.
Oct. 21 @ 7:00 Chapter/ Council Stated
