Letter from the president

Hello SWE members and supporters!
Thank you for a great summer term, full of fun
and well-attended summer term events! While
other universities were on break, we were hard
at work at Drexel, studying for our classes or
working at our co-op jobs. Over the summer, like
university students, Drexel SWE remains an
active organization. We like to take advantage of
the nice summer weather with fun activities such
as kickball socials and intramural beach volleyball. In order to keep better track of members,
we instituted new membership guidelines at the
university level, in addition to national membership through the society of women engineers
(drexelswe.com/membership). These Drexel
guidelines allow members to demonstrate their
involvement by being recognized on the active
members list, which will be posted on our website. Often, friends and employers ask myself or
other officers if we know students with SWE

Membership Committee:
General body meeting

Membership really made an impact this term by

holding organized and successful monthly General Body Meetings. Here we all munched on
pizza (vegan pizza too!) and at the last meeting,
officers provided other snacks like chips,
hummus, vegetables, and sweets! Next term we
have more funding for GBMs, so well have an
even greater bounty to offer each month. At the
GBMs, we caught up on events, reminded members of events to come, but most importantly,
we held activities that got all members interacting and bonding. One activity had to do with
testing each group's accumulated knowledge of
SWE, engineering, songs, and women in history. Others were about inspirations and the
things we have in common. We are all passionate, capable, and determined engineers in training, but there is so much more to all of us that
we can appreciate in one another, and possibly
even connect with.

Networking
This summer term the Networking Committee
has been planning and preparing the Freshman
and Alumni Mentorship Programs set to begin
in Fall 2015. The Freshman Mentorship Program started in the Fall 2013 in order to provide female freshman engineers with an upperclassman Drexel student to guide them through
their first year of the fast-paced and hard-core
curriculum of the Drexel engineering majors.
This summer we had two mentor training
sessions in which we led interesting discussions
on the importance of a committed and inspirational mentor.
This year we have twenty-three knowledgable
and excited mentors to guide our incoming
freshman. In addition, we will begin constructing an Alumni tab on the Drexel SWE website
with information on our distinguished alumni.
The purpose of this program is to provide
Drexel SWE members with the opportunity to
connect with alumni who have excelled in their
careers in industry, research, and academia.

kickball & ice cream social

Membership also teamed up with wellness to
host the first Kickball & Ice cream Social. This
was a great event that allowed many members
to get to know each other and just play! We
played a couple fun rounds of kickball then
munched at the ice cream bar full of toppings,
different flavors, and even fruit bars. We had a
great active member turn out for summer term
and are looking forward to even more food, fun,
and friends at the events for fall term!

For more information on how to join either of

these programs, please contact the Networking
Committee at swe.drexel@gmail.com.

professional development:

members walked and played with all different

types of dogs at the shelter. Going on walks with
the dogs and spending time with them helped
SWE members forget about school for a little
and have some mental relaxation. While SWe
members were benefiting, so was the dog shelter!

Professional development catered to co-op

interview season with Students in SWE Discussing Co-op (SSweDC), a round table discussion. Our turnout represented students from
freshman to senior across all engineering disciplines. The women enjoyed snacks and each
others company as stories of co-op and interview experiences. Topics including challenging
interview questions, things to consider with
accepting job offers, and successes/struggles in
the workplace. It was the ultimate opportunity
for co-op newcomers to pick the brains of veterans, and for all to learn about the amazing projects their colleagues have contributed to. Later,
we transitioned our focus to improving our
online presence with a LinkedIn workshop
hosted by Andrea Rincon and Kaitlin Lumpkin
in SCDC, to discuss the B-side opportunities
and tools of LinkedIn. Topics included appropriate techniques for connecting with acquaintances, utilizing search functions to find school
alumni, finding groups to join, contributing to
those groups discussions to propel your own
career development, and searching for job
opportunities from available postings. After the
presentation, they offered an informal Q&A
session and an opportunity to take professional
headshots for their profiles, of which many took
advantage.

Visiting the dog shelter

wellness

Wellness also had an intramural volleyball team

during summer term in the co-ed league which
included male and female SWE members/supporters! We had a fun time on the beach volleyball courts and we even won our first playoff
game.

dog shelter visit

The wellness committee partnered up with the
membership committee to put together a fun
and tasty bonding event. It was the Kickball &
Ice cream Social! SWE members joined in for a
few friendly games of kickball on Buckley Field
while taking breaks to make and enjoy an ice
cream sundae. We even had frozen fruit bars for
those who wanted a healthier option. We look
forward to doing a social like this every term.
We started a new type of event involving volunteering and mental wellness called Fridays with
Furry Friends. We took the subway to a dog
shelter in Northern Liberties, Saved Me, that is
in need of as much help as they can get. SWE

finalsweek massages

The most exciting wellness event was definitely

the FinalSWEek Massage event. Three massage
therapists came and gave free massages to SWE
members right before the start of finals week.
We had high attendance and great feedback
from everyone about the massages so we plan
on doing them every finals week!

Volunteers from SWE, along with mechanical

engineers from ASME and electrical engineers
from IEEE, were on hand to help. At Buckley
Green, we provided hoagies and other goodies
for dinner plus lots of activity supplies like a
giant Jenga set, volleyballs, and cornhole to
keep everyone entertained. In addition, the
freshmen and the volunteers participated in a
classic potato sack race. ASME also brought
their mini golf hole, which many enjoyed
throughout the early evening. Both the freshmen and volunteers had fun at the beginning of
another busy week.

miscellaneous

officer retreat to ricketts glenn

During the summer quarter, Drexel SWE
officers organized a fun camping retreat to
Ricketts Glenn, which is about three hours
away from center city Philadelphia. The retreat
was a 3 day outing where officers got to know
each other better and unwind from exams,
assignments, or the stress of co-op life. Smores
and a barbeque were enjoyed along with a
warming campfire. The officers also got a nice
muscle burn after hiking around the beautiful
8 mile long trails with gorgeous waterfall
sights! The offiers set two tents in which they
slept, instead of using the lodges.

FinalSWEek Massages

Outreach
The outreach committee hosted an outdoor
social for incoming freshmen engineers in the
Drexel Summer Delta program on Sunday,
August 9.

It was a very fun weekend, and one that all

officers agreed to have again in the future,
possibly at another location.

Summer Diversity BBQ

These freshmen from diverse backgrounds

were able to relax and talk with upperclassmen
about academics and life at Drexel.
