P0171 2002 Nissan Sentra

P0171 2002 Nissan Sentra - Fuel Injection System

Too Lean Bank 1
| Add Comment

Possible causes

- Intake air leaks

- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection
What does this mean?

Tech notes
If the P0171 is combined with the P0174 code, it's very likely that the problem is
caused by an intake leak. If there are no intake leaks, the next step is to replaced
the air filter and clean the air flow meter. If the problem persist the front oxygen
(O2) sensor may need to be replaced.
What does this mean?

When is the code detected?

- Fuel injection system does not operate properly.
- The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too small. (The mixture ratio is too
lean.)

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

- Excessive Fuel Consumption

P0171 2002 Nissan Sentra Description

With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can
be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio
feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module
(ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the
actual and the theoretical ratios.
In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual
mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection
system malfunction and light up the MIL (2 trip detection logic).

P0132 2002 Nissan Sentra - Air Fuel Ratio Circuit

High Bank 1 Sensor 1

| Add Comment

Possible causes
-

Faulty Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1 bank 1

Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1 bank 1 harness is open or shorted
Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1 bank 1 circuit poor electrical connection
Inappropriate fuel pressure
Faulty fuel injectors
Intake air leaks may be faulty
Exhaust gas leaks
What does this mean?

Tech notes
Replacing the Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor 1 bank 1 usually takes care of the
problem.
For Nissan models before 2005 see: P0132 Nissan
What does this mean?

When is the code detected?

The Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) signal computed by Engine Control Module (ECM) from the
A/F sensor 1 signal is constantly approx. 5V.

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

- High Fuel Consumption
- Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

P0132 2002 Nissan Sentra Description

The Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor is a planar dual-cell limit current sensor. The
sensor element of the A/F sensor is the combination of a Nernst concentration cell
(sensor cell) with an oxygen-pump cell, which transports ions. It has a heater in
the element.
The sensor is capable of precise measurement = 1, but also in the lean and rich
range. Together with its control electronics, the sensor outputs a clear, continuous
signal throughout a wide range (0.7 < < air).
The exhaust gas components diffuse through the diffusion gap at the electrode of
the oxygen pump and Nernst concentration cell, where they are brought to
thermodynamic balance. An electronic circuit controls the pump current through
the oxygen pump cell so that the composition of the exhaust gas in the diffusion
gap remains constant at = 1. Therefore, the A/F sensor is able to indicate
air/fuel ratio by this pumping of current. In addition, a heater is integrated in the
sensor to ensure the required operating temperature of 700 - 800C (1,292 1,472F).

Possible causes

- Faulty fuel level sensor

- Fuel level sensor harness is open or shorted
- Fuel level sensor circuit poor electrical connection
What does this mean?

Tech notes
Low fuel level can trigger this code. Before replacing any parts try filling up the
fuel tank and erasing the engine code. If the problem persist it may be necessary
to replaced the fuel level sensor.
What does this mean?

When is the code detected?

An excessively low voltage is sent from the sensor is sent to Engine Control Module
(ECM).

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

- Incorrect fuel level reading

P0462 2002 Nissan Sentra Description

The fuel level sensor is mounted in the fuel level sensor unit. The sensor detects
a fuel level in the fuel tank and transmits a signal to the Engine Control Module
(ECM). The fuel level sensor consists of two parts, one is mechanical float and the
other side is variable resistor. The fuel level sensor output voltage changes
depending on the movement of the fuel mechanical float.

Possible causes
-

Three way catalyst converter Bank 2

Exhaust tube
Intake air leaks
Fuel injectors may be faulty
Fuel injector leaks
Spark plugs may be faulty
Improper ignition timing
Engine Control Module (ECM)
What does this mean?

Tech notes
As the code description implies the P0430 code means that the vehicle's control
module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly
(is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors
may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be
replaced to fix the problem. If the P0430 code is combined with other codes, try
fixing the other codes first.
What does this mean?

When is the code detected?

- Three way catalytic converter Bank 1 does not operate properly.

- Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 does not have enough oxygen storage
capacity.

Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

P0430 2002 Nissan Sentra Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the switching frequency ratio of
heated oxygen sensors 1 (front O2 sensor) and heated oxygen sensors 2 (rear O2
sensor).
A three way catalyst converter (Manifold) with high oxygen storage capacity will
indicate a low switching frequency of heated oxygen sensor 2. As oxygen storage
capacity decreases, the heated oxygen sensor 2 switching frequency will increase.
When the frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 and 2 approaches a
specified limit value, the three way catalyst malfunction is diagnosed.
