Notes on Wine tasting

Its a good idea to plan to visit several wineries as every
wine-tasting experience offered is different. With so many
distinctive viticultural areas, one can easily taste many
of the worlds best varietials and winemaking styles
without learning the region. Listed below are five basic
types of tasting experiences. The experience will vary in
style from winery to winery.

Wine bar tasting

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar
Tasting. You step up to the bar where typically a list of
wines being poured is displayed. Expect to pay a tasting
fee between $10-$40. Some tasting bars will offer you the
option to taste a library or reserve wine. Exercising this
option increases the fee, but will allow you to taste very
unique, old or rare wines.

sit down tasting

A Sit Down Tasting usually requires an appointment
and there may be a slightly higher fee than a wine bar fee.
Seated in an elegant room, you are poured several wines
by your winery host. Expect your host to describe the
unique characteristics of each wine and how it was made.

table service tasting

A Table Service Tasting, popular at sparkling wine
facilities, is a tasting experience where you are seated at a
table and the tastings are brought to you.

Walk around tasting

A Walk Around Tasting is a combination of a tour and
a tasting. Your host brings along several bottles of wine
on your tour, and may take you to a garden area of the

winery to pour the first round. Then you move to another

place within the winery to sample the next wine. This
experience continues until all the wines are tasted.

barrel tasting
Another popular tasting experience that can be part
of a tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting. Your guide
takes a wine thief, a special siphon placed into a hole in
the top of a barrel to extract tasting samples of a maturing
wine. The sample allows you to taste what the wine is like
in the middle of developing its full potential.

Why make an appointment?

Some wineries are so small that they need to know
when you are coming so someone will be there to greet
you. Other wineries have permit restrictions that limit the
number of guests that can visit each day. Others have sitdown tastings that start and end at specific times. Its
always a good idea to schedule your appointments well
in advance of your visit because some of the more popular
wineries fill up their appointments weeks in advance.

do the Math
One of the questions most asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. We wont pretend that its simple, but here
are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good answer to that query. As with anything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless
variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a good starting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.

a case of wine includes:

a single bottle contains:

a dozen 750 ml bottles

(or 24 half bottles)
or 307.2 ounces total,
which comes from
30 pounds of grapes.

750 ml of wine which is 25.6 ounces made from about 2.4

pounds of grapes (39 oz.) and is enough for four or maybe five
glasses.

an acre of vineyard land can give the grower:

five tons of grapes (though it is also less, depending on a variety
of farming and winemaking practices, and on the varietal and the
vineyard location) which will give you 797 gallons of juice
One standard oak barrel of wine holds:
(or thirteen-and-a-half barrels) which is pretty close to four
295 bottles of wine (or 59 gallons) made from 740 pounds of grapes which works out to thousand bottles of wine.
almost but not precisely 24 cases of wine.

What does all that information on a wine label mean?

XYZ Winery

The U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms regulates wine labels and requires that information be given in a straightforward way. Basically, you will want
to look for the types of grapes grown, where the grapes are grown and when the
grapes were picked.

WINEOLOGY Intelligence for The Wine Consumer

bY LeN NapOLitaNO

Whats better cork or screw cap?

Natural cork, the bottle closure used since
commercial production of precision glass bottles, has
established itself as an unofficial industry standard. An
alternative to the cork closure has long been the
aluminum screw cap or twist cap. It was the closure on
inexpensive, low-quality wine since the sixties, resulting
in a damaging association for decades. But not anymore.
Since around 2000, increasingly more winemakers
choose screw cap closures over natural cork for one or
more of the following reasons: reduced costs; retained
fruit freshness; more consistent aging; and reduced
chance that bacteria, known as TCA, will impart a damp,
musty smell to the wine, destroying its fruit aroma.
Another benefit of screw caps is that they allow
bottles to be stored upright instead of lying on their
sides. The absence of a cork closure eliminates the need
to keep wine in contact with the cork, which expands to
create a virtual airtight seal within the bottle.
Of all the reasons above, the problem with TCA has
been the driving force behind the growing popularity
and acceptance of twist caps. It is generally estimated
that somewhere between 1% to 15% of all wine is
tainted by natural corks containing TCA, though
winemakers, cork manufacturers and wine critics have
debated this number for years. In January 2013, Wine
Spectator magazines James Laube reported 3.7 percent
of the 3,269 cork-sealed wines from California tasted in
the Wine Spectator office in 2012 were thought to be
tainted by a bad cork. If you estimate that wine
aficionados at the magazine are about twice as sensitive
to TCA-tainted wine than average wine consumers, it
would translate to fewer than 2% detectable by the
average wine consumer. This figure is closer to where the
Cork Forest Conservation Alliance claims TCA
contamination to be: they say current testing indicates
only 1% of wine is tainted by cork-TCA. Regardless of
the true number, whats important is that contamination
from cork is on the decline.
Len Napolitano lives in San Luis Obispo County and is certified in wine by the
Society of Wine Educators, Wine & Spirits Education Trust and Chicago Wine
School and continually gains knowledge from his frequent contact with California
winemakers. More information is on his website, www.wineology.com. Send your
questions about wine to: wineologist@earthlink.net or by mail to Len Napolitano
in care of Wine Country This Week magazine.

www.WineCountryThisWeek.com

The smell from TCA can be too subtle for the average
palate to notice, so certainly consumers have been
drinking cork-tainted wines for years without knowing
it. Winemakers, however, are highly sensitive to corktaint smell and work hard to keep their products free
from off-odors. Thats why those winemakers who
choose natural cork closures demand rigid quality
control from cork suppliers. Together, they are
succeeding at reducing the incidence of corked wine.
Ironically, there are issues with twist caps, as well.
Because of their air-tight design, caps have on occasion
been blamed for aging wines too slowly, or for a buildup
of sulfides inside a bottle, which adds a subtle smell of
rotten egg. Cap manufacturers responded with new
technology that permits a controlled amount of oxygen
into the bottle, matched to the wine style and how soon
the wine will be consumed after bottling (which is
difficult to know). Bottom line: there is no perfect closure.
With tens of thousands of wines entering the market
every year, there is ample room for closing wines with all
available options: twist caps, synthetic corks, aggregate
corks (crushed natural cork pressed into a cork shape)
and conventional natural corks. It has become common
for twist caps to close white wines more often than reds,
since they are more likely to be opened and consumed
sooner. Red wines are more age-worthy and corks are
proven to enhance wine-aging by allowing microscopic
amounts of oxygen into the wine.
The advantages and disadvantages of various bottle
closures will play out over the coming decades. Each
type will find its niche. Probably alternative closures will
close the more affordable wines and corks the more
expensive wines. But who knows? One thing is sure: no
longer is the twist cap associated with cheap, inferior
wine. Perhaps more important, you shouldnt fret over
purchasing wines closed with natural corks. With any
closure, odds are greatly in favor of the consumer getting
a flawless wine red or white, young or old.

Heading to the tasting room

Do not be intimidated for
any reason. That is rule number
one (and there are very few real
rules after that). For the most
part, going wine tasting is about
the easiest thing in the world, especially here in Northern California where wineries and
tasting rooms abound. You can
find wineries specializing in red
wines of all types, those that are twomey Cellars
famous for their white wines and
others who pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a
little research and planning your day.
Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. As a rule sparkling wine houses are
opened the latest. Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water) and something to snack on
crackers or a baguette. Many wineries have picnic areas
and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can make
up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us
to eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine.
Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you
make time for lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much
water as you do wine, and remember that you dont have
to drink everything poured into your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a pitcher of water
to wash out your glass.
That said, here are some tips that have proven to be
helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of wine tasting all the more enjoyable.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again
I have heard knowledgeable winery workers say that there
is no such thing as a stupid question, and they mean that.
You can drink what you want, in the order you want.
If you only like reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines,
speak up. But the idea of starting with whites, then going
on to reds and then sweet wines is a good guide.
Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never
hurts to remind everyone.
If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is
not on the list, ask. There might be a bottle around that
was opened for a trade tasting or by the winemaker. Most
tasting rooms are happy to pour a little if you show enthusiasm.
If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the

14

car or on a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine

inserts. Fill it during the day and
this keeps wine from rolling
around in the trunk.
Check out the smaller
wineries. It is a revelation.
Take notes on the wines you
most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours
when the winery offers them, but
keep in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour, so one a day
is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These
often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get
at a supermarket back home. Youll pay more, and besides,
whats the point?
Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative tasting rooms, where in one place you might find
wines from a dozen or more small-to-medium premium
producers. They are scattered throughout the area and
more are opening all the time.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages.
Its like art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as
that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It
takes no more than a phone call to rent anything from a
Town Car or restored Packard convertible to stretch limos
and a 20-passenger bus. All have drivers that will stow
your wine for you and the local companies know the area.
As to taking that wine home, ten people sharing one of
those impossibly long limousines is fine and fun, but if
you all plan to buy a couple of cases the trunk which is
no bigger than a normal luxury cars is going to fill up
fast and youre going to find yourself filling the interior
floor with boxes and using cases of Cabernet as footrest.
Tell the transportation company what you have in
mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory
and the people and personalities.
Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste
and you can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if
need be calling a taxi is cheaper than the alternative.
And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine and a great time.

Wine Country doesnt get more real than Sonoma Valley, whose rich soils
mark the birthplace of Californias wine industry. its also the closest
wine region to San Francisco, just 45 miles north of the Golden Gate
Bridge. Cradled between the Mayacamas and the Sonoma Mountain
ranges, Sonoma Valley encompasses a rolling patchwork of vineyards,
quaint farms and 13,000 acres of scenic parkland. in the center of town,
the eight-acre Sonoma Plaza is a national Historic Landmark, strewn
with sprawling shade trees and bordered by carefully preserved adobe
buildings. Up the road in Glen Ellen, author and bohemian adventurer
Jack London lived and wrote at his pristine Beauty Ranch, now an 800acre state historic park.
The historic Sonoma Plaza lies at the heart of Sonoma Valley
gateway region to Sonoma County. Sonoma Plazas done it all
Mexican military outpost, eeting frontier republic, Spanish Mission
village. now a gorgeous historic landmark and slow culture capitol,
Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and
cobblestone. Whether youre here for an overnight or extended stay,
Sonoma Plaza oers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your
adventures. its a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and
discover Real Wine Country on foot or bicycle. The Plazas old adobe
storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic
landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting
rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries even a vintage movie
house. As for the nature lover, wildower hikes and stunning hilltop
vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the
tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense
tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and
weekly farmers markets.

Visitors seeking an over-the-top ultra-luxury wine country experience would best steer clear of idyllic, slow Sonoma Valley. Sure, doublewide tractors grace
the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But
no doubt you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants throughout all of Sonoma. Living in Sonoma Valley is all about life,
about taste and enjoying each day. Sonomans are very proud of their heritage and their town. Excellence is what they do its just done in blue jeans.

any years ago when almost everyone thought Zinfandel

.was white, I was given a bottle of Ravenswood Zin and
nothing has been the same since. Ever have an epiphany?
Well that was mine and to this day I am eternally grateful.
None of this would have happened without the vision of
Joel Peterson, affectionately known as the Godfather of
Zin who always had a passion for wine. Starting out with a
garage winery and crushing his first four tons of grapes
in 1976 right before a thunderstorm he built Ravenswood
into the largest producer of fine Zinfandel in the world, and
continues to be very hands-on at the winery, and his
dedication and encyclopedic knowledge shows in every
bottle.
Nestled into the foothills of the Mayacamas Range that
divides Sonoma and Napa counties, this fabled winery is
literally at the end of the road. Once you arrive you can take
it all in from their outdoor lounge perhaps with a sampling
of local artisan cheeses to pair with the wines (MaySeptember). Overall it is a fun, light-hearted and friendly
experience, self-described as rural and charmingly rustic
(but not too rustic).
The tasting room staff is passionate about our famous
Zinfandels and enjoys our relaxed and laid-back approach
to presenting single vineyard wines, said tasting room
manager Kristin Wastell. Joel is thoughtful, enthusiastic
and humorous in his approach to life and winemaking. We
share in his joi de vivre and guarantee your visit to

wines. For over thirty years, we have lived up to our motto:

or true beer lovers, Sonoma Spring Brewing Co. may be one

of the most exciting local breweries growing amongst the
vines of Sonoma Countys wine country. Due to its success,
they recently moved from their modest original location to a
multi-room complex just on the outskirts of the city of
Sonoma.
Head Brewer, Tim Goeppinger, has more than fifteen years
of brewing experience, and it shows: even the most casual of
encounters finds him waxing with an alchemists precision
about hops, malt and the other esoteric ingredients of beer.
The new tap room has five barrelheads, each with four taps,
allowing for twenty taps of deliciousness to flow. It serves as a
good location to plant oneself and try a variety of their
offerings, including the award-winning Sonoma Springs (Uncle
Jacks) Kolsch, Lil Chief Strong Pale Ale, Roggenbier Rye and
the Bavaria NomaWeiss Wheat.
Whether on-the-go or ready to sit around and talk about
some of the finer aspects of brewing and tasting beer, Sonoma
Springs Brewing Co. has a little of something for every lover of
good beer.

FuN FaCts
One of the namesakes of their Uncle Jacks Kolsch, Jack
McAulie, established new Albion Brewing Company,
the nations rst craft brewery, just a few blocks away
from Sonoma Springss current location in 1976.
Beers aged in whiskey and wine barrels are produced
thanks to local Sonoma distilleries and wineries. Look
for their Daedalus, Mission Bell Sour, Freude Fig Lambic,
Sonoma Kriek Cherry Lambic and select other, highly
sought after barrel aged - on tap and available in bottles.
There is a wonderful and welcoming sta that greats you

ocated off the historic square, Della Santinas is a family-owned

.and operated restaurant that has stood the test of time to
become a Sonoma institution. The Della Santina family name
shares a long lineage and history in the Tuscan town of Lucca,
Italy. My father Quirico Salvatore Giovanni Della Santina
migrated from Lucca in 1960.
Residing in the North Beach area of San Francisco, Quirico
became a baker by trade. Later, he was lured to Marin County by
his uncle Adolph to work in the family restaurant: Marin Joes.
After 25 years of successful ownership in a thriving business, he
decided to go out on his own in beautiful Sonoma Valley. Since
1990, we have continued to bring Tuscan country cooking to the
wine country using recipes passed down from my grandmothers
Pia Fontana Della Santina and Clary Gambogi Barsotti.
In 2008, we opened Enoteca Della Santina, a wine bar and
retail wine shop specializing in wines from all over the world.
Enoteca, translated literally in Italian, means wine library a
place for people to enjoy a glass in an Old World ambiance. We
have created a showcase for international as well as local, small
producers.
Our wine club has circumvented the globe looking for value
selections that expand our members palates and knowledge. Day
to day, the bar is a gathering spot for locals and tourists looking
to experience a taste of Sonoma Wine Country living.

ho said you cant serve dessert first? Certainly not Caryn and
Bill Reading, proprietors of Sonoma Portworks in Petaluma.
Creating single-vineyard, single-vintage, small-lot port wine,
Sonoma Portworks is tapping into a growing niche that agrees
with the Readings.
Sonoma Portworks, in operation for more than 20 years, is
the only port specialist in Sonoma County. Bill Readings
approach to winemaking is creative and experimental. He takes
this challenge seriously, cultivating fine ports from a single,
organic vineyard. Their ARIS ports are made from Petit Verdot
and Petite Sirah grapes. Deco Port is made from Zinfandel with a
hint of dark chocolate.
Tucked away on Second Street south of downtown Petaluma,
Sonoma Portworks is a quick jaunt off Highway 101. Many
visitors wander in from that road. Others are pulled in by signs
and curiosity. All are anxious to try this winerys offerings.
The tasting room is open from 12 to 5 p.m. Thursday
through Monday and is a small but welcoming space for both
first-time port tasters and port aficionados to take a spin through
the winerys portfolio. Beyond the several ports available to taste,
Sonoma Portworks also makes grappa, a spirit distilled from
port-laden pomace leftover from the port-making process.
Visitors can also try Portworks Sonomic Almost Vinegar, which
is like a balsamic, but more versatile.
The Dyna Apertif is a delicious before-dinner offering, and
Duet Sherry offers a different take on dessert wine. All are worth
the tasting, before or after dinner.
by shoshana Hebshi-Holt

FuN FaCts
Sonoma Portworks uses as much of the grape as

Most of the grapes used by Sonoma Portworks come
from a vineyard land farmed by the same family for
six generations.
Sonoma Portworks uses hand-and-foot energy to
produce its ports.

Today let the road take you to Matanzas Creek

lover, the gardener, the epicurian. Matanzas Creek,
which put the bucolic east Santa Rosa neighborhood
of Bennett Valley on the map, took its name from the
creek that drains away the runoff in the valley. The
area enjoys a unique microclimate among North

several fronts - the Russian River Valley and Petaluma
Gap from the west and southwest, and the San Pablo
Bay to the south and southeast.
Matanzas Creek produces a wide range of wines
that reflect the viticultural diversity of Bennett Valley

Visitors flock to Matanzas Creek in the spring and

aurel Glen Vineyard is a beautiful mountain vineyard

.that is well known for producing highly rated Cabernet
Sauvignon wines in the past under the direction of founder
Patrick Campbell. Patrick focused efforts on developing
and producing wines in Lodi and South America and
eventually decided to sell the vineyard. In 2011, Bettina
Sichel, a veteran of the California wine industry, became
the steward of Laurel Glen Vineyard after teaming up with
a group of wine lovers to purchase the iconic estate. She
brings over 20 years of working with the finest producers
of Cabernet Sauvignon and believes that with improved
organic farming, more careful handling of the fruit and
gentler fermentation techniques, the new wines are already
noticeably more exciting.
One key upgrade was the addition of the Laurel Glen
Vineyard Tasting Room which is open daily. Guests are
offered two different seated tasting options. For $20,
guests can taste current release wines. This fee is waived
for members of the wine club. For $30, reserve a Library
Wine & Chocolate Tasting and experience four vintages of
the flagship Laurel Glen Vineyard Estate Cabernet
Sauvignon, spanning at least 10 years of production. Both
tasting experiences offer insight into the rich history of
Laurel Glen as well as their future plans. Bettina, along
with her knowledgeable winemakers and team, are on a
mission to restore the stylistic elegance with a balance of
acidity and fruit ripeness, finesse and ageability to their
estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

This historic property was founded on a portion of the Agua

Lzaro Pia, a second lieutenant under the command of General M.G.
Vallejo in 1840. In 1863, the ranch was purchased by winemaking
pioneer, George Whitman who planted the first vineyard and
established a new winery which quickly became a cornerstone in
Sonoma winemaking history. In 1883, Whitman sold the ranch to Eli
T. Sheppard, who was the former consul to China and an advisor to
the Emperor of Japan.
In 1941, the Madrone Vineyards Estate was purchased by Italian
sausage makers Enrico Parducci and Peter Domenici. The pair
renamed the estate Valley of the Moon and sparked a new era in
winemaking in Sonoma Valley. In 2012, this historic and beautiful

valley floor beneath Sonomas majestically craggy Mayacama mountain range. Graceful old country manors and their largely still in-tact estates dot the countryside
while cozy towns still speak to neighborly days gone by. Kenwood boasts some of the finest artisan wineries in all of northern California. Ty Caton, Muscardini Cellars,
VJB, Mayo Reserve Room, Kenwood Vineyards, Kunde Estate, Deerfield Ranch, Enkidu, the Annadel Estate, Ledson, St. Francis and Chateau St. Jean are only some of
the award-winning, gorgeous Wine Country Destinations located in and adjacent to Kenwood. Looking for a break from wine tasting? Enjoy shopping at Vita Bella or
browse Swedes Feeds for garden and both large or small pets needs. Splurge on an ultra-luxurious massage or facial at the Kenwood inn & Spa. Or simply sit out,
pick up a Kenwood Press newspaper and unwind on the patio at Caf Citti or Kenwood Restaurant.

he moment guests step through the gate at VJB Vineyards and

Cellars theyll feel as though theyve been transported to a small
Italian village. Buildings made of stone and rustic wood beams lend
an Old World feel, and on sunny, pleasant days the winerys piazza
is full of happy visitors enjoying all that VJB has to offer.
The first stop is usually the tasting room bar where VJBs
friendly, knowledgeable staff takes guests the tasting menu that
features the winerys limited production Italian varietals such as the
estate Sangiovese or Montepulciano. Chances are visitors will try
wines theyve never tasted before and gain an appreciation for these
rare, California-grown Italian varietals that are produced with an
eye toward New World innovation and Old World sensibility.
Afterwards, guests can enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the piazza
enjoying wood-fired pizzas and flatbreads from VJBs Red Rooster
Pizza Co. Crisp Neapolitan-style pizzas, calzones and flatbreads are
delivered hot and fresh to guests tables to enjoy with one of VJBs
many wines available by the glass or bottle.
There is also a large selection of cheeses, salumi and antipasti in
La Cucina, the onsite deli. Get a cheese and salumi platter to share
or freshly pressed panini. There are also several grilled selections
including ribs seasoned with owner Henry Belmontes secret rub, or
pair some of the chicken skewers with a freshly made salad.
Guests can also take home a taste of VJB from the marketplace
which feature Estate grown olive oil, Maria Belmontes homemade
sauces, and even pasta thats made in house. An onsite chocolate
and gelato shop is the perfect ending to a visit here.
From the wine to the food, the atmosphere and hospitality, VJB
is the ideal place to experience all that wine country has to offer.

renda Lynch of Mutt Lynch Winery has opened a fabulous

.tasting room on the Windsor Town Green a vibrant, tasteful
array of shops and restaurants with upstairs condominiums
clustered around a manicured park. The new tasting room is
large and bright, with avocado green walls, dyed cement floors
and rustic furniture placed around the room. Large windows let
in plenty of Sonoma County sunshine. One wall is dedicated to
photographs of the people, vineyards and wines. A large, granitetopped bar spans the back of the room. The overall vibe in the
tasting room is of relaxed, understated elegance, without an
ounce of pretension.
Brenda is both winery owner and winemaker at Mutt Lynch

Santa Rosa on Old Redwood Highway, down the road from
Willis Wine Bar in my humble opinion, one of the best
restaurants in Sonoma County and is easily accessible from

When you pull up to the winery, your first impression is of lots
of white latticework at the gate. The white lattice theme is
continued with a large white trellis-like structure, which shades the
picnic area. A goodly handful of black wrought iron picnic tables
and chairs are scattered about under the trellis, creating a relaxing,
welcoming ambience. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic,
grab a bottle or six of wine and relax and stay a while.
Once inside the winery and tasting room is where visitors may
see (and taste) what makes Chateau Ador different from other local
wineries. A long, granite-topped tasting bar spans the back of the
room. A variety of wines and medals from various wine
competitions are proudly displayed around the room. The overall
atmosphere is bright, cheerful and colorful.
Lets talk about the wines. The 2012 Chateau Ador Chardonnay
is varietally correct, with abundant aromas and flavors of baked
apple, citrus and buttered toast, all wrapped up in a juicy, richly
textured mouthfeel. The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon has received a

.Cellars is an experience not to be missed. The wines are excellent and

You will come a visitor and leave as a friend. I certainly did.
The whole atmosphere at Moondance Cellars is one of warm,
unpretentious fun. Owners, David and Priscilla Cohen invite visitors to
share in our love of life, and when you visit, you certainly will. Maury,
Australian Shepherd and Greeter Extraordinaire will politely ask you for a
treat, as will the horses (two Quarter Horses and an adorable, talkative
mini-horse).
The tasting room is the most unpretentious, friendly and rustic tasting
room Ive ever stepped foot in and Ive stepped foot in more than a few in
my long, wine-drenched career. There are cases of wine stacked along the
walls, the bar is two wine barrels, topped with a thick plank of wood and
the whole room has a crazy tilt to it. I loved it. I loved the wines, too.
Moondance Cellars has a sister brand called Orchard Station (mostly
white wines) and the wines are equally stylish and tasty. Both brands are
available for tasting and purchase in the tasting room and on the website.
Every wine I tasted was excellent, but I only have room to write about a
couple, so Ill write about my favorites:
2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley ($24): This tasty, super
aromatic wine is almost too easy to drink! Aromas and flavors of
grapefruit, freshly cut grass and savory green herbs abound, all wrapped
up in a zippy, fresh mouthfeel. Long, juicy finish.
2013 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $46: Mouthwatering aromas of
cherry, vanilla, rose petals and spice lead into a silky, sexy mouthful of
consistent flavors, which linger through the long, delicious finish.

Barlow, an urban center that brings together the best winemakers,
food producers and artisans to share their local products and love for
Sonoma County, and make a deep connection with their customers.
James MacPhail, founder and winemaker, shares his passion for
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by focusing on vineyard-designated,
limited-release wines from Californias finest growing regions, including
the Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Anderson Valley,
Sta. Rita Hills, along with the Eola-Amity Hills (Oregon).
A friendly staff takes wine lovers through the nuances of a good
Pinot and Chardonnay by offering an array of seated tastings in an
open, spacious and relaxed setting. Tasting options include: The
Introduction to MacPhail ($20 per person), The Single Vineyard
Tasting which includes a selection of wines, usually Pinot Noirs, from
different appellations ($30 per person) and The Reserve Tasting which
includes a flight of older vintage library, vertical or reserve wines from
the MacPhail Vaults ($50 per person).
In addition, guests can now experience one of the most unique
tastings in the wine country. The Terroir Tasting. Inside their Tasting
Lounge, Winemaker James MacPhail has created a Soil Wall showing 8'
cross sections under glass of four vineyards Toulouse, Pratt, Sundawg

award-winning Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays soil, clonal selection,
vintage and winemaking style. Everything you wanted to know about

lassically crafted, Wind Gap Wines represents the special

with vineyards on the Sonoma Coast and North Coast, where
wind gaps naturally occur in the micro-climates, gives its

Their Old World techniques coupled with New World

.Rosa and the perfect stop as you wend your way through the
Russian River Valley. Why? The staff is friendly, engaging and
knowledgeable, the Balletto family are great people, the surroundings
are beautiful and the wines are wonderful and reasonably priced.
The tasting room and winery are housed in a large warehouse-like
building, but once you are inside the tasting room, it feels like you are
inside a Tuscan villa. The walls are painted warm mustard gold and a
long concrete bar spans one side of the room. A tasteful selection of
wine-related gifts is displayed around the room.
In 2002, the Balletto family worked with Sonoma Countys
Agriculture Preservation & Open Space District and generously donated
a portion of their estate (the winerys western boundary) to the Laguna
de Santa Rosa. This vast wetland habitat and major tributary of the
Russian River is home to numerous species of birds and animals. It is a
local treasure it is open to the public and offers miles of beautiful
hiking and biking trails.
Along with preserving natural habitats, the Balletto familys altruistic
tendencies also include their staff they may be the only winery with a
regulation-sized baseball diamond on the property, built because the
vineyard crew asked John Balletto to sponsor their baseball league. John
not only sponsored the league, he custom built a field of dreams for
them. Games are on Sundays during spring and summer.
Balletto Vineyards first commercial vintage was in 2001. Now, over
a decade later, the wines of Balletto are still going strong consistently
garnering good press and winning multiple medals.
As proud as the Balletto family is about their agricultural heritage
and environmental practices, their true passion is in sharing their wines
(and I can personally vouch that the wines are amazing!).

Like the renegade French Garagistes, Taft Street began in a garage
in 1979, stressing quality without pretense. The winery continues in
the Garagistes tradition to this day, producing limited production,
handcrafted wines from select Sonoma County vineyards. Taft
Street makes great wine, available at a fair price, and has a fun
time doing it sharing that joy daily with visitors.

Located in the hub of the Russian River Valley, Martin Ray Winery is
located on one of the oldest historical winery sites in California
(established in 1881), known by its soaring water tower built in the

nly recently open to the public, Sonoma-Cutrer sets itself apart

Russian River Valley home grows to perfection.
The winery, perched high on Slusser Road in the heart of the
valley, offers wonderful views from its expansive patio and modern
tasting room. Those fancying some activity can stroll out to the
world-class croquet lawn with a glass of wine to test their skill.
Visitors who want a more relaxing experience can bask in the
Sonoma sunshine or book a special tasting in a private room.
Sonoma-Cutrer has been making wine since 1973 and opened
the tasting room in 2010. Before then, those who know their fine
wines may have only had the opportunity to drink them in
restaurants. Now, after a significant renovation to its visitor center
and tasting room, the winery has become a destination for
discriminating tastes.
The wines are crafted in a distinct French style to bring out the
quality of the grapes grown on the winerys 270 acres.
Sonoma-Cutrer has always prided itself on pairing well with
food, and the winery offers a few opportunities to expand ones
palate by offering an artisan cheese plate for purchase and a food and
wine pairing inspired by Chef John Ash.
The winery also offers private tours and tastings by appointment.
Members of Club Cutrer, its wine club, receive special discounts,

artin Ray Winery is an ambitious amalgam of labels and wines,

all housed in one of Sonoma Countys most historic wineries.
Founder/Proprietor Courtney Benham is a third-generation San
Joaquin Valley winemaker who knew he wanted to some day own
a winery himself. In 1990, he discovered a treasure trove of old
library wines with the label of Martin Ray, a Santa Cruz Mountains
winemaker. Courtney bought the rights to the Martin Ray name
and in 2003 purchased the historic Martini-Prati Winery in
western Sonoma County; now home to the Martin Ray line of
wines.
One common thread between Courtney and Martin Ray is the
firm belief that vineyard location is crucial to character and quality
of the wine. There is a special emphasis on mountain-grown wines,
a conviction that mountain-side elevation provides cooler nights
during the growing season which result in superb fruit ripeness.
Diamond Mountain in Napa Valley, Sonoma Mountain in Sonoma
County and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the south are three of the
most prestigious vineyard locations for Martin Ray grapes.
Wines available include fruit-forward, picnic-friendly Angeline
wines, Martin Ray wines that have elegant structure and vineyard
character, the vineyard designated reserve wines and Courtney
Benham wines that are limited-production offerings from some of
Californias most interesting wine regions.
At the winery, picnic tables and chairs outside the tasting room
overlook verdant hills and vineyards. Lush, colorful landscape and
flowers surround the tasting room. The friendly and
knowledgeable tasting room staff can suggest interesting wines to
taste side-by-side, so visitors can compare a Cabernet Sauvignon
from Sonoma Mountain with one from Alexander Valley. Its not
only a great educational experience its also lots of fun!

he winery estate on Westside Road in Healdsburg is located in

the heart of Russian River Valley; a premiere growing region
known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir. This is good news
for Moshin Vineyards winemaker and owner Rick Moshin, who
has turned a labor of love into a thriving and welcoming business.
Moshin, a former math professor at San Jose State University
who loves Pinot, began tinkering with wine in his basement.
Opportunity knocked, and he bought the property on Westside
Road, which became his winemakers dream-come-true and fulltime passion. The tasting room opened in 2005.
Moshin specializes in Pinot Noir, known as a finicky grape
that needs to be handled tenderly, but can produce stellar and
versatile results. The winery produces no less than 12 unique
Pinot Noirs a year, and visitors to the tasting room can root out
the differences by trying a Pinot flight.
Enthusiastic pourers and other staff will guide visitors through
a tasting of five wines from the rotating menu, three of which will
be Pinot Noir.
Moshin prides itself on its friendly atmosphere, perfect for
first-timers, or those who want to develop their palates in an
educational, nonjudgmental and relaxing setting.
Those interested in the production process can schedule a
guided tour to witness the winemaking process in Moshins fourtier, gravity-flow system. The structural design of the production
system, from crush pad to bottling line, ensures the grapes are
handled delicately and spur-of-the-moment needs are met.
And at the end of it all, sit back and enjoy the true fruits of
their labor in their excellent wines.

imi Winery has something for everyone fantastic wines,

.friendly, informative staff, a well-stocked Visitor Center,
gorgeous grounds and winemaking history galore.
Simi Winery is the longest continually running winery in
Sonoma County. It was founded in 1876 by Giuseppe and
Pietro Simi, and even Prohibition didnt shut down the winerys
production.
Simi Winerys Visitor Center is spacious and airy, with
hardwood floors, a rough-hewn rock fireplace, a long, l-shaped bar
and a tasteful selection of wine-related gifts and foods, so visitors
can sip, stroll and shop to their hearts content.
Bring a picnic, purchase your goodies in the Visitor Center or
enjoy fresh salads and sandwiches prepared by Simis chef (who
formerly worked with famous chef Gary Danko) on Fridays and
Saturdays. The state-of-the art outdoor kitchen is equipped with
a pizza oven and pizza dinners can be reserved for groups of 1540 people.
Two separate event spaces are available by reservation the
indoor space accommodates up to 75 guests and the picnic area
accommodates up to 100 guests. These spaces are available for
corporate events, weddings and private parties.
During your visit, dont miss the chance to purchase some
winery-exclusive, single-varietal wines. These Winemaker Select
wines come from grapes grown in Simi Winerys prestigious
Landslide Vineyard, a 172-acre estate located on Chalk Hill Road in
the Alexander Valley. This vineyard possesses such diverse
microclimates and soil types that it is sub-divided into 44 distinct
blocks. It consistently produces critically acclaimed Cabernet
Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

he view from Armida Winery overlooking the Russian River and

Dry Creek valleys is expansive, impressive and inspirational enough
to prompt many wedding engagements. Yet its the playful and friendly
culture that really keeps people coming back to this special place.
Armida has been around for more than 20 years, launched by
brothers Steve and Bruce Cousins, who still run the winery today.
Bruce is the maitred of sorts, a jack-of-all-trades, who will be spotted
hand-sorting grapes during harvest as well as chatting up visitors in
the tasting room, located in one of several geodesic domes on the
property.
Armida may best be known for its playful, unconventional labels,
poizin, The Wine to Die For, and its ANTIDOTE, a Pinot Gris with
alluring aromas of cantaloupe and meyer lemon.
While they like to have fun, all of the Armida employees also take
their business very seriously, producing fabulous wines from some of
Sonomas best vineyards. Many of the wines come from a single
vineyard such as the Maple Vineyards Zinfandel, a famous old-vine
vineyard on the east side of Dry Creek Valley. Armida is also proud of
its 2012 Il Campo Estate Field Red, sourced from its estate ranch at
the winery in the western hills of Healdsburg.
Most of Armidas wines are only available at the winery, so dont
hesitate to take a picnic up to the winery, where you can enjoy the
view on the oak-shaded deck and indulge in a great bottle of wine,
making new friends on the bocce court. If youre lucky youll get to

et in the heart of Dry Creek Valley is a special estate called

.Truett Hurst. As you drive in, the sheep and goat pasture is
the first indication that this is not in any way your average
winery. Vineyards are flanked by habitat islands for birds and
beneficial insects, and there are bluebird and owl boxes.
Maintaining biodiversity and habitat are part of the farming
philosophy here. Our commitment to responsible stewardship
of this property is matched by the passion with which we
handcraft award-winning Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir,
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel Ros.
The wines are made by fermenting grapes in small, open-top
stainless steel fermenters. The grapes are punched down during
fermentation, rather than pumped over, allowing for gentle
extraction of color and flavor components, while avoiding bitter
tannins. Then wines are barrel aged in approximately 30% new
French oak, until the flavors and structure of the wine perfectly
balance. The result: big, bold, textured wines with lots of spice
and jammy fruit.
You can savor these wines in one of the most comfortable
and relaxing wineries in the valley. You have a choice of
Adirondack chairs down by the creek where you may see
Steelhead or Coho salmon. Or hang out on the patio and listen
to music while enjoying the sublime scenery of Dry Creek, or

Quivira owners Pete and Terri Kight bought the estate

Touring the estate, visitors will encounter chickens,

California-style Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Cabernet
Sauvignon at a beautiful winery overlooking ten miles of

petersON WiNerY
Fred Peterson has been growing wine grapes and making
wine in Dry Creek Valley for more than 25 years. As a
winegrowing team, Fred and Jamie Peterson (winemaker
and son) work hard, yet they dont take themselves too
seriously. The result of their labor is delicious, reasonably
priced wines with a casual, comfortable environment to
enjoy them in. The Petersons call their approach to grape
growing and winemaking Zero Manipulation, meaning that
they capture the essence of vintage and vineyard with a
low-tech, yet-high touch methodology. Simply put, they let
the grapes do the talking.
