The Key To Early Detection

By Judy Slater, Lead Mammographer at Clarinda Regional Health Center.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, the annual campaign to increase
awareness of the disease. One in eight
women develops breast cancer over the
course of her lifetime. Second only to
skin cancer, breast cancer is the most
commonly diagnosed cancer among
American women. Only lung cancer
accounts for more deaths in females
with cancer.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
reminds us to take necessary steps for
detection and to encourage others to
do the same thing. The earlier breast
cancer is found and diagnosed, the
better the chances of beating it. The
American Cancer Society recommends
women age 35 to 40 to receive a baseline
(first) mammogram, with a doctors
physical exam and yearly mammograms
thereafter.
Breast cancer can be detected either
during a screening examination before
symptoms have developed, or after
symptoms have developed in the form
of a physical lump on the breast. Most
masses that are seen on a mammogram
and most breast lumps are benign, not
cancerous. When cancer is suspected,
microscopic analysis of the breast tissue

is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.

The warning signs for breast cancer are
not the same for everyone. The most
common symptoms are a change of look
or feel of their breasts.
Breast cancer can happen to anyone
(male or female) at any age. Be aware of
what is normal for you and take action
if you see or feel something unusual
in your breasts. Lifestyle choices do
not guarantee prevention but eating
a well-balanced diet, regular exercise,
maintaining a healthy weight, and
limiting alcohol can contribute to
reducing the risk of developing breast
cancer.
During Octobers Breast Cancer
Awareness Month and throughout the
year, remember, early detection is a
key to beating this disease. Make sure
to schedule your annual mammogram
if you are a female over 40 and speak
with your physician about breast cancer
prevention and detection.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A
POST-MASTECTOMY FITTING

About six to eight weeks after breast surgery it will be time to

see the postmastectomy fitter. Women who experienced breast
conserving surgery will also benefit from a postmastectomy fitting
as there are partial prostheses to help fill in the missing portion of
their breast and provide symmetry.

Schedule your mammogram online at

www.clarindahealth.com or call (712) 542-2176.
No physicians referral needed.

We are here to help. All fittings are
