THE HORSTMANN ADVANTAGE

in print

Test-driven Development New to this edition, the testing track encourages students to
test their programs as they develop them. This gives them greater confidence as they
develop their solutions, and teaches them to become better programmers. The testing
track is distinguished by color on the outside margin.
Objects introduced gradually Rather than following a rigid objects-early or
objects-late approach, concepts of object-oriented programming are introduced
gradually.
Balance of syntax and concepts Horstmann provides a balanced introduction to the
syntax of the Java language and essential concepts of computer science.
Updated for Java 6 Enhancements for user interface, database and XML programming
in the December 2006 release of Java 6 are fully covered. The book remains completely
suitable for use with Java 5.
Optional Graphics Track To enable instructors and students to focus on graphics
coverage, or skip it altogether, graphics topics and exercises are distinguished by color
along the outside margin.
Streamlined Java Concepts Optional and Advanced topics in Java Concepts have been
moved to the student web site, reducing page length by 25%.

A new online homework tool LabRat enables students to digitally complete, compile
and test programming exercises and submit them for grading a feature not found in any
competitors system. Comes pre-loaded with 2 problem types:
o code completion problems (approximately 5 per chapter), in which students add
lines of code to complete a partially-worked program;
o programming exercises (approximately 5 per chapter), in which students write
and submit entire programs.
For both types of problems, instructors using WileyPLUS can assign, and students
can submit, programming exercises that are compiled and tested within WileyPLUS.
Students can review their test results before submitting for a grade. Instructors
receive the students program along with a report on its test results.
