STORM PLAN FOR SV ARTEMIS


ISLAND PACKET 38

GENERAL
Our objective is to provide clear procedures to follow in the event of a Watch or Warning for a
Hurricane or severe storm and to manage, maintain, secure and control the operation and
property of Artemis during an announced emergency situation.

WEATHER ADVISORY DEFINITIONS


TROPICAL DISTURBANCE
A rotary circulation with little to no development on the ocean surface, but better
development in the upper atmosphere.
TROPICAL STORM
A low-pressure with a distinct rotary circulation and sustained wind speeds of 39 mph to 73
mph.
HURRICANE
A lowpressure area with a strong and pronounced rotary circulation and a sustain wind speed
of at least 74 mph.
Hurricane Watch:

a Hurricane may threaten the area within 36 hours

Hurricane Warning:

a Hurricane is expected to strike the area within 24 hours

PLANNING STAGE DONE AT START OF SEASON

1.

Determine if there is an alternate refuge available


a. Is it well protected, inland canal, inlet or river
b. Consider how far inland it is and the time it will take to get there as well as
navigation restrictions
c. If chosen plan move well in advance of season an d rehearse the move
d. Obtain permission if necessary

2.

Register Dinghy with Harbor Masters Office, for assistance with securing and storage

3.

Supply Regatta Point Marina (RPM) with a current list of phone numbers and contact
information

4.

Verify that a current copy of our Certificate of Marine Insurance is filed with the
Harbor Masters Office

5.

Verify a supply of 16 - 5/8 dock lines for use. Length should allow adjustment in/out
with at least 3 feet left beyond the attachment point

6.

Create our Hurricane survival kit

7.

Survey slip Report any loose dock boards, missing or broken dock boxes and/or
clasps to RPM crew for a repair order

Tie and secure the vessel, place fenders where necessary and chafe protection
Remove the following items;
a. All Sails headsail, staysail, mainsail and secure boom
b. All canvas, isinglass and all frames
c. Deflate Dingy and store
d. Remove anchor(s) from pulpit
e. Remove davits
f. Remove any loose items or items like grills, cushions, life rings, etc.
Charge batteries for automatic bilge pumps and drain bilge
a. Add back up battery to bank
Check fuel and water tanks top off if necessary
Pump out holding tank
Lock or pin the dock box
Secure / make water tight all openings
Close all through-hull valves
Plug un-valved fittings
Seal engine exhaust ports
Seal Fuel and water tank vents
Close and plug sink drains
Check and clear all cockpit drains
Remove shore power / shut off breakers
Check survival kit
a. Flashlight and batteries
b. Radio
c. Cell Phone charged and extra battery
d. Hand held VHF
Remove all import papers and valuables from vessel

FINAL RE-CHECK
