Senecas 100th win

marks high point
in strong season

Seneca falls to Lenape, 5-0

Team closes in on volleyball programs

record for wins in a single season
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun

SEAN LAJOIE/The Sun

Senecas Sarah Moschini serves to Lenapes Cailyn Chow during last weeks match. The Golden Eagles were defeated by their rivals by a score of 5-0. Chow defeated Moschini 6-1 in both sets.

Seneca girls volleyball reached

a milestone on Oct. 2, defeating
Sterling on the road, 2-0, for the
100th victory in program history.
However, the win meant more
to the Golden Eagles than just
being No. 100.
Prior to Oct. 2, Seneca had not
beaten Sterling, a perennial contender in the Olympic Conference, in the past four seasons. The
Golden Eagles were able to
avenge a tough 2-1 loss to the Silver Knights from September.
The win was also the teams
sixth in a row and improved its
record to 8-3, putting the Golden
Eagles in a position to potentially
break the programs record of 16
wins in a single season later in
October.
Head Coach Bob Colombo said
this years team has the talent
and confidence to be the best
team in Seneca girls volleyball
history.

Winning breeds winning,

Colombo said. We're a very confident team right now. We believe
in ourselves and that has allowed
ourselves to put a better product
on the court.
The 2015 season has not been
without its bumps for the Golden
Eagles. Seneca entered the preseason with nearly all of its key
players returning from the 2014
season. Expectations were high
for Seneca entering the Sept. 10
season-opener against Sterling.
However, the team had trouble
winning matches in the seasons
opening weeks. Seneca started
the season 2-3, losing its first two
matches to Sterling and GCIT.
After wins against Woodrow Wilson and Camden, the team lost
again, 2-0, to Camden Catholic.
Colombo said the team didnt
get too down on itself after starting 2-3, saying the three losses
were against very good teams,
and the losses against Sterling

Pageant promise
Kathryn Sebastian, 11, takes away some
top finishes at National American Miss
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
While Kathryn Sebastian did
not quite make it to the top for the
National American Miss pageant,
she did win many of the optional
contests such as singing, piano
and public speaking. She also
won a cash prize of $250.
Not bad for an 11-year-old with
very little pageant experience!
Kathryn benefited from a competition that was not similar to a
customary beauty pageant. NAM
is not beauty-based; instead it focuses on all aspects of a contestant such as self-confidence, poise,
communication skills, talents and
knowledge of her surroundings.
NAM is not based on looks, it
is about encouraging self-esteem
and showcasing talents and
achievements. NAM is a platform
used to bring out your potential.
To be successful in this competition, you must be confident and
have good communication skills,
Kathryn said.
The girls compete at various
levels based on their age. Kathryn

participated
in the pre-teen
division
against
130
girls who each
represented a
different town
in New Jersey.
Kathryn
said she was
very proud to
SEBASTIAN
represent Tabernacle. She was selected based
upon the activities and accomplishments highlighted on her application.
The pageant weekend is a hectic experience that is spread out
over a two-day period. This year,
it was held on Aug. 15 and 16 at
the Hyatt Hotel in New
Brunswick.
The pageant consists of four
competitions that each receive an
individual score from judges.
Thirty percent of the contestants
total score is based on personal
introduction, 30 percent on formal wear, poise and appearance,

30 percent on communication
skills in an interview scenario
and 10 percent on participating in
a community involvement project.
Kathryn went home with numerous prizes, finishing first
place in the talent competition,
second place in the art contest
and third place in the spokesperson competition.
I can honestly say that my
confidence level has increased
since my first time entering the
pageant last year, Kathryn said.
Ive been shy and not very outspoken. I wanted to break out of
that, and I believe NAM has
helped me do just that!
Ive always wanted Kathryn to
showcase her potential not just in
academics or sports, her mother
Mary said. I believe pageants
can help Kathryn be more well
rounded, give her more confi-

dence and gain great friendships.

Kathryn said NAM provides a
multitude of opportunities for
kids such as herself to showcase
their talents, while also providing
a platform to meet other girls who
share similar interests.
The pageant also focuses on the
community by donating school
supplies and books for children
who are less fortunate.
The ambitious 11 year old has
her sights set on becoming a doctor, but would welcome the opportunity to stay a part of the NAM
family.
I would love to pursue further
in the pageantry world. While I
aspire to become a doctor, one of
my dreams is to compete in the
Miss America contest, Kathryn
said.
Kathryn also won first place at
a spelling bee competition earlier
this year conducted by the
Womens Club of Medford.
My daughter is truly a dream
child. Anything she initiates, she
invests hard work and dedication
to stamp her name, Mary said.

Lawmakers trying to model Atlantic City after Las Vegas

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

here was a time when Las

Vegas was a struggling gambling resort town. During the
economic crisis of the mid-2000s, people had less money to frivolously
spend and the money they did have
to frivolously spend wasnt going toward casino gambling.
Casino revenue fell, and casinos
along the Strip were in trouble.
And then, casino and hotel executives had an idea. They stopped focusing on gambling and started focusing
on other entertainment attractions.
In addition to building exquisite
shopping centers, luxury pools and
spas, fine dining establishments and
nightclubs, hotels began signing up
musical performers who attracted big
audiences to long-term deals.
Caesars Palace inked a three-year
deal with Celine Dion in 2002 that had
her performing five nights a week at
its venue. Motley Crue signed a similar deal at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, and Britney Spears did the same at

Planet Hollywood.
The idea worked. Tickets to these
shows are in high demand, and the
visitors to Las Vegas for the shows
spend money at other attractions
and gambling at Las Vegas casinos.
Naturally, our lawmakers in New
Jersey think this is a good idea, and
they want to bring it to Atlantic City.
They already followed in Vegas footsteps with the dining, nightlife, shopping and revitalization of the town, so
why not piggyback on the entertainment residency idea?
A state Senate committee approved
a new bill last week, dubbed the Britney Bill, that would exempt stars who
play at least four nights in Atlantic
City from having to pay state income
taxes on all shows they play in New

Jersey.
Senate Republican Leader Tom
Kean, who co-sponsored the bill, said
he believes Atlantic City can transform into a premier entertainment
destination, and this bill would help
it do that. More than 50,000 fans paid
to see Maroon 5 in Atlantic City this
past August, and Kean believes people
would flock to the city from all over to
see other A-listers, if it were the only
place they would play.
New Jersey Policy Perspectives
head says its a waste of money, and
that star entertainers dont pick venues based on whether they have to pay
taxes. We agree that these A-listers
probably pick venues off how many
tickets they can sell, but if Atlantic
City really can be an entertainment
destination that sells 50,000 tickets to a
concert, and if a tax incentive program like this would indeed help to attract more A-listers, then what is the
downside? Sure, wed lose the tax revenue, but wed gain all the visitors.

and GCIT were in three sets.
The thing that sets them apart from
other years is they believe they are good,
Colombo said.
After the Camden Catholic loss, the
Golden Eagles ran off a winning streak,
peaking with the Oct. 2 win against Sterling. Having won five straight games entering the rematch with the Silver Knights,

Colombo said his team had more confidence than ever before.
The girls were very focused on that
game, probably more focused than I ever
saw them, he said. We had played them
earlier in the season and we lost in the
third set. We knew we could hang with
them and play with them on the court.
A lot of the teams returning starters
have made an impact this year. Senior Jordan Wahrenberger is the teams all-time assist leader and top server, while Caitlin
Lange leads the team in kills.
However, one new player has been a big

difference maker for the Golden Eagles.
