Section 2
Unit Title:

Mechanics of Machines

Topic of Lesson:

Graphical Resolution of Forces

Teaching Strategy:

Demonstration/Explanation

General Objectives:
Students should:
1.0 know the common terms used in the analysis of forces
2.0 understand how forces in structures are graphically determined

Specific Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
1.1 define correctly key terms used in the analysis of forces in structures
2.1 determine accurately forces in structures using graphical method
2.2 construct Share force and Bending Moment diagrams for a series of loads
acting on a beam without error

Lesson Content:
-

Definition of terms; Force, Load, Co-planar, Concurrent

Use the triangle of forces method to analyse three forces acting in a structure

Rationale:
Learners who successfully complete this unit should develop their skills in the
field of Technical Drawing design and will be competent in graphically resolving forces in
structures with given standard. Learners will also appreciate that construction transcends
the classroom and has wider implications for designs in industries.

Instructional Materials/Teaching Aids/Equipment:
Multimedia projector
Laptop with CAD software for teacher to use
Computer (students) - ACAD software
White board to write instructions
Markers

Previous Knowledge:
1. Students are familiar with the use of computers and appropriate software
Introduction:
Teacher will:

Show using movie maker, different structures such as bridges and

roofs which forces and loads which forces act.

Engage the students in a discussion as to how forces act in a simple

structure and the consequences of overloading.

Learners
- Make note of each term and ask questions for clarification

angles are accurate

Follow steps of procedure

Determine an appropriate scale for the load e.g.

10mm:1kN

Draw a vertical load line 50mm long

Draw lines parallel to the jib and tie members of the space
diagram from end points on the line

Complied by C McInnis

Facilitator
1.1 Give a definition of key terms to be encountered
throughout the lesson
1.2 Present a scenario of a load of 5kN being supported
by a simple jib crane
1.3 Outline the steps of procedures to graphically
determine the magnitude of the forces acting in each
member of the crane using triangle of forces method.
Check learners progress.

Multiply the lengths of these lines by the scale factor to

get the magnitude of the force in each member.

1.4 Ask learners to resolve the forces in a simple picture

frame using the method presented
1.5 Check students work for accuracy and clarify any
misconceptions

Ask for assistance where necessary

Analyze the force in the wires used to hang the picture

frame. Ask for assistance where necessary.

Make relevant notes on the drawing
