Stakes champions sprinkle the field as the 30th edition of the $500,000 Iowa
Breeders Classic gets underway at Bluffs Run.
The Wednesday, Oct. 14, program will be completely devoted to the first round; all 12 races on the program will be first round tests for the field of 96 greyhounds. At primary stakes is the big paycheck waiting the winner. The IBC could also go a long way to determining who will be the 2015 Greyhound of the Year at Bluffs Run. Here is a quick look at the opening round by race and where some of the top greyhounds are positioned. In the first race, Bocs Executive (Boeckenstedt) 42-15-9-4 drew the nine box. Executive had a third place finish in the $60,000 Juvenile Stakes in July. In the second race Bocs Tony Romo (Boeckenstedt) 41-20-5-6 drew the five box. Tony Romo won the $60,000 Open in August and works at time on the 3-8 mile course (the IBC is a 5-16 mile race). He may have the strongest finish in the field. Superior Phoenix (Harlan Brothers) 31-8-5-5 was a finalist in the $60,000 Finale in September. In the third race JD Iconic (Seastrom-Lovely) 31-9-4-2 was a finalist in the $60,000 Finale. In the sixth race No Big Deal (Hardison) 43-14-7-5 was a finalist in the $60,000 Finale. Bocs John Luke (Boeckenstedt) 24-6-3-2, obviously not having a banner season is 2015, is the tracks defending Greyhound of the Year after winning two stakes titles last year. In the seventh race Sweet Cheeses (Filipelli/Miner) 39-8-5-6 was a finalist in the $60,000 Juvenile. In the eighth race O Ya Spunky (Bartley Corporation) 48-16-11-3 was a finalist in the $60,000 Open. Bocs Gasguzzier (Boeckenstedt) 41-11-10-6 won the $60,000 3-8 Mile Derby in April and came back to take second in the $60,000 Finale. In the ninth race the veteran L Tootie (Harlan Brothers) 48-14-6-10 returns for another try. She has 52 career wins and 109 money finishes. In the tenth race Bocs Hank Jr 35-20-4-6 returns to action. Knocked out of the $60,000 Finale semifinals because of an ankle injury, Hank was a question mark right up to the entry deadline. Boeckenstedt Kennel trainer Philip Stapleton had said that Hank would not run in the IBC unless he was completely 100 percent healthy and here he is. In the eleventh race Half Way There (Black) 37-10-7-5 won the $60,000 Juvenile in July. In the twelfth race Bocs Sailfish (Boeckenstedt) 38-16-8-6 won the $60,000 Secretarys Choice in May and the $60,000 Finale in September. Right now, he appears to be the favorite in the chase for Greyhound of the Year honors. The greyhounds will all return to the track for the second round on Saturday, Oct. 17. After the second round, the field will be trimmed to 48 greyhounds for the Wednesday, Oct. 21, quarterfinals. To complete the racing schedule, the semifinals with 24 greyhounds is set for Saturday, Oct. 24 with the championship race on Saturday, Oct. 31.
