A reinforced concrete column has a cross-sectional area of 0.2 m2. Four steel
bars, each of diameter 44 mm, are used to reinforce the column. Calculate the
stress taken by the concrete if the column carries an axial load of 40 kN. If the
length of the column is 4 m, find the compression of the column.
Esteel = 200 GN/m2 and Econcrete = 20 GN/m2.

(b)
A steel bar of diameter 100 mm is placed between two rigid stops with an end
clearance of 0.2 mm. The bar has a total length of 500 mm and there is a hole
of 50 mm diameter drilled along its length for a distance of 200 mm. If the bar is
heated from 20 0C to 80 0C, calculate the maximum stress in the bar.
Esteel = 200 GN/m2 and steel = 12 x 10-6 /0C.

(b)
A cylinder has an internal diameter of 230 mm, is 1 m long. The walls of the
cylinder are 5 mm thick and are subjected to an internal pressure of 1.25
MN/m2. If the joint efficiency is 85%, calculate the hoop and longitudinal
stresses.

Three masses (A, B, and C) are bolted to the same face of a thin disc and rotate
together with it about the centre, O, of the disc. The masses and radii of rotation
of the three masses are, respectively, as follows:
Mass A is 1.0 kg and at 30 cm;
Mass B is 1.5 kg and at 36 cm;
Mass C is 2.0 kg and at 40 cm.
The angles between the masses are: AOB = 30 0 and BOC = 600. Find
the
resultant out-of-balance force at 6 rev/s and the position, relative to the mass A,
of a 2.0 kg mass required for balance.

(b)
Figure Q6b shows the instantaneous position of a mechanism where, the crank
AB rotates in the anticlockwise direction at a speed of 4 rev/s. Find the
instantaneous velocities of the slider E and joint C and the angular velocity of the
links BC and CE for the position shown.
