NOTES ON THE PRODUCTION!
!
Our production has focussed heavily on original early modern
practices and borrows several elements that may have been used in
the original Globe productions. The thrust staging, live music,
universal lighting and doubling are all historical practices that we
have tried to incorporate in to our modern performance.!
Julius Caesar was likely one of the first plays to have been
performed at Shakespeares Globe. The diary of Thomas Platter the
Younger, reports seeing a play at the Globe in 1599 about Julius
Caesar. He recounts seeings it performed by a cast of 15 male actors,
indicating that the production was making use of cross gender
multi-roling. It is fitting that by contrast, our version of the play
should be performed by a cast of 15, with many of the male parts
being played by women.!
A final note on the cutting of the text, was the decision to leave in
place the following passage;!
