Grandmother’s knit caps Warm Hearts and Heads

GREENVILLE — Mary Brasser simply saw a
need and felt compelled to help fill it. A grand-
mother of nine, Mrs. Brasser of Grand Rapids
knits caps. Lots of warm winter caps. With the
season’s coldest weather looming, she donated
25 of her handmade creations to the emergency
department at Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital
in Lakeview. When a staff member spots some-
one they think might have come ill-prepared for
the cold, they get one of Mary Brasser’s caps.
As a former inner city school teacher, Mrs.
Brasser recalls the plight of one of her young
students. “She missed 3 straight weeks of school
because she didn’t have any shoes,” Mary said.
“That just can’t happen.”
With that galvanizing memory in tow, Mary
turned toward her son, Brian Brasser, chief op-
erating officer, Kelsey Hospital. “Brian has al-
ways been so concerned about his community.
He worries about how everyone is getting on in
this economy. I suggested that I give some of my
caps to the ER, so the staff could give them to
people who needed them. Brian was more than
happy to help make the arrangements,” said
Mrs. Brasser.
The first shipment of 25 handmade caps
landed at the Kelsey Hospital emergency de-
partment in time for Christmas. At last count,
only a few remained. Mrs. Brasser plans to re-
stock for next winter by knitting an average of
one cap per week in the meantime. Each cap
requires four to five hours of work. Mary uses
a variety of colored yarns, and sizes the caps for
adults, but children are very happy to wear them
as well.
RN Stevie Berends has given away a number
of Mary’s caps herself. “We just try to eyeball
the situation and watch for anyone who looks

House will bring two bands to their
concert stage on Saturday, March
20, for the regular admission price

& Bluegrass Jam” is being held in
conjunction with the West Michi-
gan Bluegrass Music Association
(WMBMA), with a portion of the
proceeds going to WMBMA.
Taking the stage at 7:00 p.m.
will be “Uncle Betty.” Take Mark
Schlutt a mandolin player who
can burn the strings, Tony Zapol-
nik, a guitar player with his rapid
fire flatpickin style, add the vocal
stylings of banjo player Bryan Gar-
lotte, and let Ken Mortimer hold it
together with his strong bass beat
and you’ve got the newest “Hot
Band” on the regional circuit.
Following “Uncle Betty” will
be a southwest Michigan favorite,
“Deadwood.” The gentlemen of
Deadwood have been putting it to-
gether at festivals, concert stages,
and summer music venues since
1978—traditional vocals, strong
musicianship, and a solid perfor-
mance every time they step on
stage.
In addition to the two bands,
open jamming will be available
all evening on the lower level of
Zellie’s Opry House. Hot pickers
and slow jammers are welcome!
A “slow jam” room will be avail-
able for those just beginning or if
you haven’t dusted the strings in a
while.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m., with
the stage show beginning at 7:00
p.m. (No advance ticket sales on

Cedar Springs theater group will
perform ‘The Miracle Worker’
The Cedar Springs Community Players
will present the award winning play, “The
Miracle Worker” by William Gibson, on
March 25, 26 and 27 at the Kent Theatre at
7:30 p.m. each evening.
“The Miracle Worker” is the true story of
Helen Keller, who was born a healthy child,
only to be stricken at age 19 months with a
severe illness which left her blind, deaf and
mute. The play carries the audience into the
daily disappointments and then into the mi-
raculous breakthrough of the young Helen
Keller at the guidance of her teacher Anne
Sullivan. Helen’s teacher, Anne Sullivan is
remembered as “the Miracle Worker” for
her lifetime dedication, patience and love to
a half-wild southern child trapped in a world
of darkness.
Under the stage direction of Sue Har-
rison, cast members include Anna Johnson
in the role of Annie Sullivan, and newcomer
to the theatre, Ellie Awad, as Helen Keller.
Helen’s parents, Captain and Kate Keller,
are played by Russ Cole and Laura Johnson.
Helen’s brother, James, is played by Caleb
Rhoads and Aunt Ev is Joanne Carter. The
household servants Viney, Percy, and Mar-
tha are played by Terri Riggle, Michael Nind,
and Janelle Odren. The Doctor is Jack Clark
and Dr. Anagnos is played by Kim Johnson.
The girls at the Home for the Blind in Bos-
ton are played by Brianne Fredrickson, Cas-
sandra Rivard, Ryllie Rivard, Claire Willette,
and Olivia Wortz. Jimmie’s voice is Brandyn
Kirchhoff and the other backstage voices
are performed by Jack Clark, Kim Johnson,
Terri Riggle, Laura Johnson and Joanne

Zack Bull
named ‘Patriot
of the Month’
Congratulations to Zach Bull for
being selected by staff members as
Patriot of the Month for his out-
standing behavior in TRUSTWOR-
THINESS.
Zack is the son of Jim and Kris
Bull of Sand Lake. He said he
was surprised when he received
the award, mostly because he had
earned an award for his Hero paper
right before accepting the Patriot
award. To Zack, trustworthiness
means “people can depend on you
and they can come to you.” Some of
his favorites include the color red;
steak for food; and history as a sub-
ject. A favorite scripture, because it
has always stood out to him, is John
3:16. Zack and his family attend the
Grant Christian Reformed Church.
When asked what his advice would
be to others, Zack stated, “Laugh.”

Chris Loyd
HOWARD CITY — Chris Loyd, a hus-
band, father, grandfather, and friend,
age 56, passed away at home after a
short battle with cancer.
He was born on June 24, 1953 to
Janice and LeRoy Loyd in Boise, Idaho.
Chris grew up in Carson City, with his
siblings, Janice Saxman, JoAnne Zim-
merman, Barbara Capes, and Duane
Loyd. At the age of 17, in November of
1970, he joined the Army and served his
country until September of 1973. For
30 years he worked as a welder and for
seven months as a truck driver. Chris
enjoyed woodworking, spending time
with his family, and making people
laugh. He loved learning about history

and would sit in his
chair and watch the
History Channel (all
day if you let him).
Chris was a member
of Pine Grove Church,
and his favorite time
at church was in the
summer when the
LOYD
tent was up. He loved
greeting and shaking hands with every-
one as they entered. Chris would say
to us, “If I shake enough hands, some
of their luck will rub off on me.” Chris
is survived by his loving wife of 24.5
years, Shelby (Burnham) Loyd; his five
beautiful children, Mike (June) Loyd,
Melanie (Dave) Arnold, Laura (Steve)
Parcher, Dominick, and Krystle Loyd;
mother, Janice Loyd; 10 grandchildren,
Erica, Thomas, Robert Michael, Dar-
rick, Kerisa, Jamison, Matthew, Feli-
sha, Aidan, Makayla. He was preceded
in death by his father, LeRoy Loyd. The
service for Mr. Loyd was held Sunday
March 14, 2010, at Pine Grove Com-
munity Church with Pastor Bill Vis of-
ficiating. Those planning an expression
of sympathy are asked to consider the
needs of the family.
Edward Toner
Edward Toner, 63, of Howard city
passed away March 7 at Spectrum
Health Butterworth Campus.
He was born Nov. 23, 1946, in Kent
City, the son of Edward and Mary (Stin-
son) Toner. Ed worked in the Auto Re-
pair Business for most of his life and
enjoyed motorcycles and hot rods. In
1970, he married Cynthia Marvin, who
survives. Also surviving are four chil-
dren, Children Sheila Wilcox of Green-
ville, Cheryl Toner of Washington D.C.,
Cindy (John) Emory of Sparta and
Axel (Jean) Toner of Howard City; five
grandchildren and four great-grand-
children; two brothers, LeRoy and Rus-
sell; sister, Charlene; and several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his par-
ents and a brother, Lester.
Cremation has taken place as to Ed’s
wishes. Arrangements were entrusted
to the Heckman Funeral Home of How-
ard City.

Greenville man faces more charges Photography Workshop

Deputies from the Montcalm County Sheriff’s
Office have arrested a 41 years old Greenville man
on numerous charges stemming from a court room
incident on March 3, 2010.
At approximately 10:10 a.m. on March 3, 2010,
a Montcalm County Court Security Officer was re-
quested to respond to 64B District Court and take
the suspect in this case into custody on a contempt
of court charge. As the man was being taken to the
court lock up room he turned and struggled with the
officer and fled through the door into the court room.
Once in the court room the man was stopped by an
Assistant Montcalm County Prosecutor and a state
corrections officer who was serving as a juror. The
man was let up to be taken into custody and took off
on foot. At this time the court officer deployed his
taser with no effect. The man fled to the front door of
the court complex where he was confronted by a sec-
ond court officer. Mace was deployed on the suspect
and he ran through the front doors into the parking
lot.
The man got into a van in the parking lot and
locked the doors as officers approached. The van was
started by the suspect and as he backed out of the
parking spot officers approached and broke out the
driver’s window and deployed another taser. (The
van belonged to a friend who had driven the suspect
to his court hearing and had no connection with the
escape of the suspect). The suspect went forward and
out of the parking lot onto south M-66.
The vehicle was spotted by the Chief of the Stan-
ton Police Department who took up pursuit of the
vehicle. The vehicle was chased on various back
roads, with speeds approaching 80 miles per hour,
heading in a south west direction towards Green-
ville. On Peck Road between M-91 and Vining roads
a Michigan State Trooper successfully deployed stop
sticks which slowed the vehicle. However the sus-
pect was within a short distance of his home, in the
8000 block of Peck Road, and was able to drive up to
the house and got inside barricading himself in the
home.
Contact with the suspect was attempted to no
avail. Due to the concern that the suspect would
cause injury to himself an entry team of four officers
and a K-9 team was formed and entered the home.
The suspect fled the home into a pole barn type
garage where he had earlier started a 1971 Dodge
motor home. As officers attempted to get the man
stopped through the driver’s side window, he backed
the motor home up, put the vehicle in forward gear
and drove out the closed garage door into the front of
a Montcalm County patrol vehicle.
The vehicle went west on Peck Road and struck
a Greenville Department of Public Service patrol car
at the intersection on Peck and M-91. The suspect
turned south on M-91 striking a Greenville Depart-
ment of Public Safety vehicle several times in the
rear. The suspect turned the motor home around
and headed north on M-91. A Montcalm County
Sheriff’s Office Ford Expedition patrol vehicle was
able to force the motor home off the west side of M-
91 into a snowy field where it stopped. The suspect
fled on foot and a taser was deployed which brought
the suspect to the ground where he was apprehended
and taken to the Montcalm County Jail.
An officer from the Greenville Department of
Public Safety was transported from the scene to
United Spectrum Hospital in Greenville by Mont-
calm County Emergency Services with injuries sus-
tained when his vehicle was struck in the rear by the
suspect’s motor home.
In the chase, two Montcalm County Sheriff’s Of-
ficer patrol vehicles were damaged along with three
Greenville Department of Public Safety patrol ve-
hicles.
Assisting Deputies beside the Greenville Depart-
ment of Public Safety, Stanton Police, Michigan
State Police Post 67. were officers from the Michigan
Department of Natural Resources.
The Montcalm County Prosecutors Office has is-
sued a 23 count warrant for Mark Dwayne McCuaig,
age 41 of Rockford, for his actions of the March 3rd,
2010 pursuit. The charges listed are seven counts
of Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer, five
counts of Fleeing a Police Officer, five counts of Ma-
licious Destruction to a Police Vehicle, three counts
of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, one count of
Unauthorized Driving Away of a Motor Vehicle, one
count of Malicious Destruction of a Building, and one
count of Assaulting or Obstructing a Public Officer.
McCuaig is being lodged in the Montcalm County
Jail in lieu of posting a $500,000 bond. The exam
for the charges has been set for March 15, 2010.
honors Chris Caris
Eight young people from throughout Newaygo County
participated in a special four week photography workshop
held at NCCA-Artsplace. The workshop was initiated in
2009 to honor Chris Caris, the son of Ted and Jeannie Caris,
an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed the art of photography
while a student at Fremont High School. The classes were
funded by the Christopher R. Caris Memorial Fund at the
Fremont Area Community Foundation and taught by Jane
Vitek, Chris’s former art teacher.
Area art instructors recommended students to participate
in the class. Class members included Kyle Karrip and Ann
Van Alstine of Newaygo Middle School, Rianna Miller and
Jake Frey of Grant Middle School, Eliot Hawker and North
Lensky of Fremont Middle School, and Kristin Thatcher and
Grace DuBois of Providence High School.
Vitek gave specialized instruction to the budding photog-
raphers on 35 mm SLR cameras, composition, developing

America & Me Essay Contest, sponsored by

When we have issues and challenges that are rooted in the mental/emotional part of us, sometimes $
we consider suicide. This is actually normal. We are genetically programmed to solve problems. When

we face something difficult, our brain, just like a computer, will sort through all the possible solutions
to this problem. Suicide is one solution. But suicide has a built-in misconception. Since this is a mental/
emotional problem, it is not our body that needs to die. Rather it is some mental/emotional concept,
idea, old program, emotional trauma, or other bit of mis-information that we have thought to be true,
that needs to die. This misconception must be removed. It needs to go, not the physical body. Killing
the body is definitely not the answer.
If you are feeling suicidal and thinking about ways to do it, you must talk
to someone immediately. Maybe even medications will be needed for a time.
But then begin to search for the mental/emotion traumas that have caused this
thinking. When you find them, use the Emotional Releasing Letters or Emotional
Freedom Techniques to release and remove these misconceptions out of your
mind. You will then find that suicide no longer comes into your thoughts, because Since 1988
the underlying problem is no longer there.

Three students from Tri County Middle School have been named local
winners in the 41st annual America and Me contest, sponsored by Farm Bueau
Insurance. The three students, from Mrs. Gerard’s and Mrs. Simmons’ eighth
grade language arts classes are: Elise Ketelaar - first place, Johnny Newell -
second place, Emily Gould - third place. As the school’s first place winner,
Elise’s name will also be engraved on a plaque for permanent display at the
school.

Several thousand eight graders from nearly 500 Michigan schools
participated in the 2009-2010 America and Me Essay Contest. The topic this
year was “ My Personal Michigan Hero.”

Haiti: a small country with a lot of strength and courage; struck with
hurricanes, typhoons, and earthquakes. What happens to the people of Haiti?
How do they keep their houses standing? They don’t.
Haiti was recently struck by a massive earthquake with a magnitude
7.0. Tri County Middle School students held a “Hats for Haiti” fundraiser to
raise money for the Red Cross Foundation that sends money to the Haitians.
Student council researched the fastest and most helpful way to help Haitians
and learned it was to send money. Students who donated a dollar were allowed
to wear their favorite hat all day at school. A total of $172 was raised. That
means 172 kids wore their funky hats on Friday, February 12. From cowboy
hats to a Mackinac Bridge hat, they all had fun showing off the cool hats.
Haitians need our help now more than ever before. Every little bit counts in
helping the people of Haiti. From children in orphanages to those without
homes, a simple dollar can help those in need. Tri County Middle School
students would like to encourage you to donate even a dollar to the people of
Haiti.

The Tri County High School National Ocean Science Bowl Team placed
fourth this year at the Great Lakes Regional. The team traveled to Ann Arbor
Friday night and competed most of the day on Saturday, February 6. They were
one of sixteen teams from the mid west to travel to the University of Michigan
for the competition. This is the school’s third year in the competition and
taking fourth place for such a young team reflects very highly on the team’s
effort and skills. The team won $200 and received a plaque. Many of the other
teams are from very large high schools, located in southern Michigan and
Ohio. The cost of the hotel and most meals are covered by the NOAA.
The National Ocean Science Bowl (NOSB) is a nationwide academic
competition among teams of high school students. Regional competitions are
held around the U.S. in February and March with the final National Competition
held on April 24-25, in St. Petersburg, FL. The NOSB will test students’ math
and science skills as applied to topics on ocean (and Great Lakes) biology,
chemistry, geology, physics, technology, history, and economics.
The team practices/studies once a week staring in September. Team
members this year are: Tyler Gyger (10th grade), Courthey Vanderlaan (10th
grade), Jerry Lawrence (11th grade), Lexi Helbert (11th grade), Caitlyn
Hoskins (12th grade), Christine Scharphorn (10th grade), Keegan Brewster
(10th grade), CJ Parkhurst (12th grade). The students are coached by Matt
Williams, teacher of earth science and biology at the high school. Thanks to
Mrs. Brewster who helped drive the team to Ann Arbor.
MacNaughton Elementary kicked off March is Reading Month on Monday,
March 1 with a large assembly. The theme for reading month at MacNaughton
is “All You Can Read Served Daily at Mac’s Diner!” The children were informed
of all the “menu” choices being offered at Mac’s Diner. Among the “specials
being served” are bringing in a healthy recipe to be included in a Mac’s Diner
Recipe book, reading and recording minutes read on Mac’s Diner cards. The
children who turn in all their Diner cards will receive a cool prize. Each class
at MacNaughton will be video taped performing an exercise. The exercise
video will be available for families to purchase.
Also on the menu at Mac’s Diner will be Mac’s Diner Literacy Night on
March 30 with fun reading related activities for families to participate in. Served
during the month will also be Trading Terrific Teachers, Drop Everything and
Read, and guest readers. Reading is an important menu item, served daily at
MacNaughton!

On Friday, February 5 and students gathered in the Tri County Middle
School gym to support academic excellence and sports. As the parents walked
in, the seventh grade band played some fancy tunes. Everyone took their seats
and the Honors Assembly began.
First, Mr. Mabie gave a speech about our achievements in the middle
school. Mr. Cichewicz announced the students who earned honors and top
honors from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. A total of 305 students
had a grade point average over a 3.0. Top honors are anywhere from a 3.5 to
a 4.0.
The language arts teachers gave out the student of the month, which are the
students who stand out and over achieve for the month. The certificates and
the citizenship award were given to students who show the most citizenship
through the marking period. Lastly, the coaches of each team announced the
winter sports team players. The band wrapped up the assembly with some
more fantastic music. Congratulations to all students who made honor roll
and top honors.
The Tri County Music Department will be presenting “Jazz Along the
White Pine” on Friday, March 19, at 7:00 p.m. at Tri County High School.
The jazz band will be featured along with some “Special Guests.” Come and
enjoy great entertainment, great food, and great fun! Please see the schools

“I thought it was normal to have loans and credit card debt,” said Jennifer
Rupp, an exchange student at Tri County High School. Now Jennifer views all
debt as bad and says she never wants to go into debt.
Jennifer, along with two other students and accounting teacher Jeff
Mercer, attended the Dave Ramsey seminar on February 25 at the VanAndel
Arena. They were among 8,000 attendees.
“It was three and a half hours and it was good,” said senior Zack Tramper.
Zack didn’t know what to expect before the seminar and said Mr. Ramsey was
a great entertainer.

“We really want to thank Macatawa Bank for sponsoring us to go to
the seminar and for sponsoring our Financial Peace Curriculum,” said Mr.
Mercer. In addition to the seminar, Macatawa Bank gave the students a t-shirt
with the words, “Future Millionaires,” printed on the front.
What do most teens struggle with in terms of finances? “Most have trouble
saving money. Those who have a job are probably more responsible with their
money compared to those teens who are handed money,” said Jennifer.
