Abel (Year 2, R14)
Swimming Carnival
Last week on Thursday Room 14 had the Pohutukawa
Syndicate Swimming Carnival. I went in the starfish, over
arm, underwater, kickboard, piggyback race and more.
I felt cold when I hopped out. We had to bring two towels
because one was to sit on and one was to wrap yourself
warm. I felt cold.
At the end some people wanted to have some free time. I
want to have some free time next time. I want to have
another swimming carnival whatever class I am in next
year.
I like swimming. It’s super, super and super!
Nikita (Year 2, R14)
The Big Day
Last week on Thursday Room 14 had our swimming
carnival. We got changed and ready for the carnival. When
we got to the pool I was excited. We had to sit on our towel.
The races that I did were a kickboard race and an
underwater race. The best one was the kickboard race
because I won.
My family were there to watch me. They were very proud of
me. I was so happy at the swimming carnival. I saw Mr
Potaka and lots of parents came to the swimming carnival.
When I got out of the pool I was freezing.
I can’t wait until its next year when it is the swimming
carnival again.

How the Kiwi Lost Its Wings
Once upon a time there was a forest with all sorts of birds
like Tui, Kaka, Pukeko and Kiwi. But one bad thing
happened. Bugs came. Tane Mahuta saw a plague of bugs
and he called the birds and told them that the forest was
going yellow.
First he called Cuckoo. Cuckoo said, “No. I’m building a
nest high up in the trees. I don’t want to live down on the
ground.” Morepork said, “No. I don’t want to live on the
ground because I love the light.” Tui said, “No. I don’t
want to live on the floor. I’m afraid of what enemies that
would be down on the ground. I like to live up high in the
tree tops.” Then he asked Kiwi. Kiwi said, “Yes. I will live
on the forest floor. I will love the forest”.
“As it must be,” said Tane. “Now Cuckoo, you will have to Children have fun creating all sorts of art using our

 Nelson Central School – Co mbined Schools Swimming Sports 2010
Last week a team of 27 Totara/Te Pouahi syndicate students were selected to represent Nelson Central at the
Combined Schools Swimming Sports held at Hampden Street Pool. Schools participating were Clifton Terrace,
St Josephs, Victory, Hira, Auckland Point and Hampden Street.
For many it was their first experience competing in an inter-school event and they coped admirably.
The team performed extremely well.Congratulations to all on such a suburb effort and for your wonderful
social skills.
A big thank you to all the parents/caregivers who transported the swimmers to the event and to those who
provided great support to the team at the event.
A number of swimmers made the finals for their events. Congratulations everyone.
