The PUP Logo

The star in the logo stands for the
perfection of the human person as
well as the search for truth, while
the five concentric circles depict
infinite wisdom.
Both the five-pointed star and the
five concentric circles stand for
quintessence, meaning the highest
form of quality or the most perfect
example of creation. The two arcs of
laurel symbolize excellence and
quality of education as
demonstrated by the rich
achievements of the University in
over a century of its existence.
The star is golden yellow not only
because this is a stars natural color
but also because, together with the
dark maroon used as background, it

John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan

(April 17, 1837 March 31, 1913)
was an American financier, banker
and art collector who dominated
corporate finance and industrial
consolidation during his time. In
1892, Morgan arranged the merger
of Edison General Electric and
Thomson-Houston Electric Company
to form General Electric. After
financing the creation of the Federal
Steel Company, he merged it in
1901 with the Carnegie Steel
Company and several other steel
and iron businesses, including
Consolidated Steel and Wire
Company, owned by William
Edenborn, to form the United States
Steel Corporation.
At the height of Morgan's career
during the early 1900s, he and his
partners had financial investments
in many large corporations and had
significant influence over the
nation's high finance and United
States Congress members. He
directed the banking coalition that
stopped the Panic of 1907. He was
the leading financier of the
Progressive Era, and his dedication
to efficiency and modernization
helped transform American
business.
Morgan died in Rome, Italy, in his
sleep in 1913 at the age of 75,
leaving his fortune and business to
his son, John Pierpont Morgan, Jr.

Andrew Carnegie (/krnei/ karnay-gee, but commonly /krni/
kar-n-gee or /krni/ kar-negee;[1] November 25, 1835 August
11, 1919) was a Scottish American
industrialist who led the enormous
expansion of the American steel
industry in the late 19th century. He
built a leadership role as a
philanthropist for America and the
British Empire. During the last 18

years of his life, he gave away to

charities, foundations, and
universities about $350 million[2]
(in 2011, $225 billion) almost 90
percent of his fortune. His 1889
article proclaiming "The Gospel of
Wealth" called on the rich to use
their wealth to improve society, and
it stimulated a wave of philanthropy.
Carnegie was born in Dunfermline,
Scotland, and immigrated to the
United States with his very poor
parents in 1848. Carnegie started
work as a telegrapher and by the
1860s had investments in railroads,
railroad sleeping cars, bridges and
oil derricks. He accumulated further
wealth as a bond salesman raising
money for American enterprise in
Europe. He built Pittsburgh's
Carnegie Steel Company, which he
sold to J.P. Morgan in 1901 for $480
million[2] (in 2011, $309 billion),
creating the U.S. Steel Corporation.
Carnegie devoted the remainder of
his life to large-scale philanthropy,
with special emphasis on local
libraries, world peace, education and
scientific research. With the fortune
he made from business, he built
Carnegie Hall and he founded the
Carnegie Corporation of New York,
Carnegie Endowment for
International Peace, Carnegie
Institution for Science, Carnegie
Trust for the Universities of
Scotland, Carnegie Hero Fund,
Carnegie Mellon University and the
Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh,
among others.
John Davison Rockefeller Sr.
(July 8, 1839 May 23, 1937) was
an American business magnate and
philanthropist. He was a co-founder
of the Standard Oil Company, which
dominated the oil industry and was
the first great U.S. business trust.
Rockefeller revolutionized the
petroleum industry, and along with
other key contemporary
industrialists such as Andrew
Carnegie, defined the structure of
modern philanthropy. In 1870, he
founded Standard Oil Company and
actively ran it until he officially
retired in 1897.[3]
Rockefeller founded Standard Oil as
an Ohio partnership with his brother
William along with Henry Flagler,
Jabez A. Bostwick, chemist Samuel
Andrews, and a silent partner,
Stephen V. Harkness. As kerosene
and gasoline grew in importance,
Rockefeller's wealth soared and he
became the world's richest man and
the first American worth more than
a billion dollars, controlling 90% of
all oil in the United States at his
peak.[a] Adjusting for inflation, his
fortune upon his death in 1937
stood at $336 billion, accounting for
more than 1.5% of the national
economy, making him the richest
person in US history.[4][5][6][7]
Rockefeller spent the last 40 years
of his life in retirement at his estate,
Kykuit, in Westchester County, New
York. His fortune was mainly used to
create the modern systematic

approach of targeted philanthropy.

He was able to do this through the
creation of foundations that had a
major effect on medicine, education
and scientific research.[8] His
foundations pioneered the
development of medical research
and were instrumental in the
eradication of hookworm and yellow
fever.
Rockefeller was also the founder of
both the University of Chicago and
Rockefeller University and funded
the establishment of Central
Philippine University in the
Philippines. He was a devoted
Northern Baptist and supported
many church-based institutions.
Rockefeller adhered to total
abstinence from alcohol and tobacco
throughout his life.[9] He was a
faithful congregant of the Erie Street
Baptist Mission Church, where he
taught Sunday school, and served
as a trustee, clerk, and occasional
janitor.[10][11] Religion was a
guiding force throughout his life,
and Rockefeller believed it to be the
source of his success. Rockefeller
was also considered a supporter of
capitalism based in a perspective of
social darwinism, and is often
quoted saying "The growth of a
large business is merely a survival
of the fittest."[12][13]
Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 April
7, 1947) was an American
industrialist, the founder of the Ford
Motor Company, and sponsor of the
development of the assembly line
technique of mass production.
Although Ford did not invent the
automobile or the assembly line,[1]
he developed and manufactured the
first automobile that many middle
class Americans could afford. In
doing so, Ford converted the
automobile from an expensive
curiosity into a practical conveyance
that would profoundly impact the
landscape of the twentieth century.
His introduction of the Model T
automobile revolutionized
transportation and American
industry. As owner of the Ford Motor
Company, he became one of the
richest and best-known people in
the world. He is credited with
"Fordism": mass production of
inexpensive goods coupled with high
wages for workers. Ford had a
global vision, with consumerism as
the key to peace. His intense
commitment to systematically
lowering costs resulted in many
technical and business innovations,
including a franchise system that
put dealerships throughout most of
North America and in major cities on
six continents. Ford left most of his
vast wealth to the Ford Foundation
and arranged for his family to
control the company permanently.
Ford was also widely known for his
pacifism during the first years of
World War I, and also for being the
publisher of antisemitic texts such
as the book The International Jew.
