Court will rehear case for legalizing

STEPHEN EDELSON @STEVEEDELSONAPP

In the wake of Wednesdays stunning decision by the

Third Circuit Court of Appeals, Monmouth Park hopes
to be accepting wagers on sporting events by the Super
Bowl.
At least thats what track officials and New Jersey
legislators are hoping after the court decided to vacate
the opinion by a three-judge panel in August and will
have the entire court rehear the case for legalizing
sports wagering in the state, breathing new life into a
four-year fight led by Monmouth Park and the Christie
administration.
Its wonderful news, said Dennis Drazin, adviser
to the operators of Monmouth Park. We definitely
hope to be taking bets by the Super Bowl.
Usually you file these requests and it never happens. But this means we now have an opportunity to argue our case in front of the entire Third Circuit, and I
think we have a real legitimate chance. There are clearly serious questions about the courts two opinions, with
Christie I and Christie II in conflict.
In August, a Third Circuit panel ruled by a 2-to-1vote
against the states maneuverings, known as Christie II,
to allow betting on sporting events at casinos and race
tracks by repealing the Professional and Amateur
Sports Protection Act of 1992.

CARY, NORTH CAROLINA The nickname for Thomas Nangles new hometown here says it all: The Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees.
The towns real name is Cary, population 150,000 and growing. But with the
high number of New Jerseyans and other northerners migrating to this municipality just west of Raleigh, a Southern accent is getting harder to come by.
The Jersey Comeback, once touted by Gov. Chris Christie as the start of New
Jerseys rebirth, has become more of a reality in North Carolina than the Garden
State. Feeling squeezed by the high cost of living, a stagnant job market and rising taxes, fed up New Jerseyans have discovered an attractive alternative in the
Old North State.
Taxes are lower, housing is cheaper and jobs are more abundant, North Carolina transplants say.
When you talk about the cost of living, people are facing high taxes everywhere in Jersey, said Nangle, who grew up in Morris County. Thats why you
see the exodus out of New Jersey.
New Jersey looked similar to North Carolina 40 years ago. There was no income tax, low property taxes and affordable housing. People were clamoring to
move in.
Now, those who once found prosperity in New Jersey are taking their educa-

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are, without question,

two of the most in-demand filmmakers working today.
The Emmy-nominated writers and directors are
currently at work on a dizzying array of projects in
various stages of development and production, including a Star Wars spin-off film focused on Han Solo, an animated Spider-Man film, a television series
based on the hit podcast Serial and the continuing
success of their Fox series The Last Man on Earth.
But, amid all of this activity, theyre still taking
some time to visit the Jersey Shore.
Lord and Miller will be flying from the London
Star Wars base of operations to appear at Monmouth University in West Long Branch on Oct. 26,
when they will receive the Monmouth Award for
