On October 12th, at approximately 10:55pm, Captain

Lazar left the Central District where he helped bring
an end to a life-threatening situation where a man
had positioned himself high atop a building and
refused to come down. This incident lasted the better
part of the day and into evening until San Francisco
Fire personnel were able to harness the man and
lower him to safety.
Captain Lazar was in an unmarked vehicle and driving
west on Broadway from Fillmore. He was traveling at
low speed when something sent him and his vehicle
Captain David Lazar
into a violent turn. Captain Lazars vehicle was
Commanding Officer Central Station
thrust violently forward as it made a complete
360-degree turn. After Captain Lazars vehicle made
its turn, it struck the front of a parked vehicle that was on the far side of the
opposing lane. The vehicle that struck Captain Lazar came to rest immediately next
to Captain Lazars vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle appeared to be
intoxicated and could not exit from the drivers side of his vehicle. Air bags
deployed and the only sound that anyone could hear was the sound of Captain
Lazars horn that was stuck and steady. Captain Lazar was able to get himself out
of the vehicle and contact 911 for assistance.
San Francisco Fire personnel transported Captain Lazar to San Francisco General
Hospital where he was evaluated and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The
driver of the vehicle that struck Captain Lazars vehicle was arrested for suspicion of
driving under the influence.
Captain Lazar is at home resting and, as you may have guessed, he is calling me
regularly. I will be the Acting Captain while Captain Lazar is away. We all wish
him a speedy and complete recovery.
_______________________________________________________________________________

I see this as an opportunity to discuss the dangers of drunk driving. There are so
many alternatives to driving while intoxicated in this city. Taxi, designated driver,
walking, public transportation, etc. Too many people die each year due to collisions
caused by drivers who are under the influence. Please help by discussing this
important issue with friends and family. Also know that the San Francisco Police
Department takes this issue seriously. The Department organizes sobriety
checkpoints in various zones throughout the city on a regular basis.

While tonights community meeting is cancelled, Captain Lazar has informed me that he will be discussing
issues relating to driving under the influence at his next community meeting.

Great Police Work

Officer Anthony Randolph on October 14th was recognized by the Greater Geary Boulevard Merchants
Association for apprehending a robbery suspect. Presenting his award was Chief Suhr. Officer Randolph
was in the right place at the right time to effect an arrest on a robbery suspect who shot a tourist from
Thailand at Lombard and Larkin St a few months ago. Officer Randolph did a great job and showing what
a caliber of officer he is, he went right back to work handling runs after his awards. Keep up the great
work!!!

Thank you
I would like to thank Captain Lazar and Captain Cherniss for their help while I am the Acting Captain for the
week.

Have a great weekend!
