At the very first performance of a military pageant which
took place on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle in 1950,
a twenty four year old Princess Elizabeth, wearing the
uniform of the Womens Auxiliary Territorial Service,
was photographed saluting her mother, Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth (later Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the
Queen Mother), accompanied by her younger sister
Princess Margaret. Two years later, following the death
of her father, King George VI, the same Princess Elizabeth
ascended the Throne of the United Kingdom as Queen
Elizabeth II of England, Wales and Northern Ireland,
and of Her Other Territories, and Queen Elizabeth I of
Scotland.
It was the beginning of a remarkable
era. The world into which Queen
Elizabeth was born would change
dramatically. Over the 60 years of her
reign, she has witnessed men landing
on the moon, the Berlin Wall being
demolished, the dismantlement of
the Soviet Union, the creation of the
European Union, and the launch of the
Internet.
It has been a dazzling journey, with
