SES PTA Meeting

Tuesday January 6, 7pm

SCES Media Room

President’s Remarks
Isabelle Estrada apologizes for late filing of tax forms.

Meeting Minutes
The December minutes are moved and approved.

Treasurer Update
• The PTA was fined for late filing of 990. The fine was paid. We are looking
into an appeal.
• Insurance tax was filed
• Follow-up is being done on after school program payments
• The PTA has $29 in bad debt on non payment of sales taxes for Sally Foster
program
• We have to prepare 1099 forms for the after-school program

PTA Open Positions

• Both the after-school and the PTA meeting babysitter positions will need to be
replaced next year. Emily Sudbrink will reach out to the babysitter.
• The nominating committee needs to be put in place.
• The treasurer position is identified as key. Emphasis on historical memory.
Position could potentially be divided.
• Not enough people come to the PTA meetings. A speaker may attract a
greater crowd.
• Use current scheduled events to advertise open positions and promote the
PTA.
• Put an events coordinator in place before next school year.
• Establish a volunteer coordinator position that could tap room parents and
grade-level liaison parents.

Principal’s Report
SecurityThe visitor’s system is going well, no update on the camera.
Partners in Learningcontinues to do well with 40 kids participating every
Tuesday.
School BoundariesThere will be boundary meetings in March 09. We are
looking at boundary changes that could decrease registrations by as many as
100 students. Debbie Spielberg will try to get more information.
StaffingSCES currently has 3 long term subs including 4th grade, 2nd grade
and art.
Mural ProjectA note will go out asking for kids help on the mural project.
MSA DataThere was a sobering staff meeting with Mr. Morrison to discuss
the MSA data. We have an increase in ESOL kids from last year. The school
has identified a group of kids for additional tutoring which has been taken on by
the teachers, in their spare time. Concerns are with reading and math.
AnniversarySeptember 09 will be Sligo Creek’s 10 year anniversary.
Budget Cuts18 academic positions will be cut county-wide. Ms. Swift is
concerned that the cuts will affect SCES.

Other Business
• Emily Sudbrink is working with Ms. Frye and a group of parents to organize the
Science Night.
• County move to change Gifted and Talented program based on concerns
about whether the designation is helpful and whether GT kids are getting a
better education.
