1. The elements of music and the overtone series.
2. Introduction to the piano keyboard; notation of pitch, tempo and time signatures.
3. Conducting patterns, tapping rhythms with both hands, alteration of pitches and
the concept of a scale.
4. MUSICAL SYSTEMS: SCALES AND MODES
5. The Major Scale.
6. The Circle of Fifths and Key Signatures. The concept of transposition.
7. Introduction to melody and the musical phrase.
8. Refinements of rhythmic notation and subdivision of the basic pulse ("advanced
counting!")
9. Minor Scales: The three basic forms.
10. Modes, Pentatonic Scales, "Blues" Scales, and Twelve Technique.
11. Violin Concerto and Claude Debussy, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun .
12. Spelling of intervals. Ear training: Interval recognition.
13. Intervals continued. Worksheets due in class.
14. Melodic motion and elaboration: Embellishing Tones.
15. Rhythm in melody, phrase grouping, and "scanning" a poem to create rhythmic
patterns.
16. Triads in Major and Minor keys.
17. Seventh Chords and Figured Bass.
18. Aural drills on Triads and Seventh Chords. Types of Cadences and Periods.
"Definite" and "Indefinite" phrase endings.
19. Harmonic Modulation: change of key.
