THE GREATEST GENERATIONOF MODEL KIT BUILDERS
Tom Brokaw, the well known television anchor and journalist, coined the phrase the
greatest generation years ago to describe Americans born from approximately 1920 to
1935. The phrase often first brings to mind our citizens who fought in World War II and
the Korean War, but also includes depression era Americans who lived through hard
times of that era. Included among this select group are my father, Alan, who passed
several years ago, and my mother, Gloria, who at age 80 is CEO of the family medical
business, head of the New York State Occupational Therapy Association, and so much
more.
I recognize my parents and other people I know of this greatest generation for their hard
work, bravery, survival skills and high moral character. There will never be an era of
folks like these, as the world has changed tremendously in the past 75 or so yearsand
not for the better. Courtesy is nearly dead, in all forms, and honesty sometimes is hard to
find. God fearing people are getting harder to find too, along with good neighbors. Just
getting someone to hold the door open for you is an unexpected pleasure.
Luckily, I have a somewhat safe haven in model kit building and collecting. Our
sometimes lost hobby is a home for mostly decent and humble people around the world,
and one that deserves respect, not a questionable glance and comments from people that
dont have a clue what the hobby is.and was.
Plastic model kit building and collecting really took off from about 1955 on, reaching its
people in the late 60s. Sorry to say I missed the peak years, although 1971 to the mid
70s was still pretty exciting. I missed the boat, though, on what I consider the greatest
generation of model kit builders. This is what I call the generation born between 1940 to
1950. This decade would make builders too young for service in the Korean War, but just
right for Vietnam and beyond. It also makes these people ripe to start building in 1955
and continue right through the mid 70s.
The greatest generation of model kit builders are the luckiest, obviously, as there were a
dearth of great kits built during this era: Monogram street rods, AMT annual kits, Johans
great annuals and drag kits, MPCs wide variety of high quality kits, Revells innovative
lineup and plenty of Euro/Japanese kits as well.
But this generation isnt really about the great kits, its about character, humbleness,
honesty and decency, same as Brokaws earlier version of Americans. These attributes are
readily apparent when I deal with customers or sellers of model kits. In my opinion, Ive

had my great successes dealing with these people, who are now approximately 65 to 80
years old. These guys were brought up in a different era of family values and virtues,
rules, morals and just a general lifestyle which is mostly lost in 2015. It means a
handshake or an okey dokey are an ironclad contract and a promise, not something to be
wormed out of or turned into a lie.
It also means saying hello, please, thank you and we will see you soon, not gimme that
now. Fair deal, square deal, moneys worth and happy as a lark might be mentioned in
the conversation, not taking someone to the cleaners, not what you see on an internet
auction might not be what you get, and certainly not getting ripped off.. Ive never been
defrauded by anyone of Brokaws greatest generation or my so called greatest generation
of model kit builders.
Im not in this generation, having been born about 10 years later. And even though you
might not be part of it either, dont be insulted. If you are reading this list in print I hold
you in good standing. If you are perusing the Freds website, youre doing ok too, thank
you. But my generation, born late 50s to late 60s, went through the hellish times of the
late 60s, awful 70s and beyond. For better or worse, its affected many of us, including
me. What guy buys a Scotch taped MPC Dodge Firefighter pickup kit, trusting the seller
that its complete, then finds out at home its a junky kit? Me, from some dentist in
Toronto thats been pulling that scam for years. Yes, hes not part of the greatest
generation of modelers. Neither is John Rodriguez out of New York City, who used
every excuse in the book not to send me a collection I paid for in 1999. John ended up in
jail for that one.
None of any greatest generation is perfect, ours or the past dozen. Maybe Im just a
sentimental fool who pines for the past or wants to be in a greatest generation. It just
seems to me that times are different now and not always in a good way. For every new
innovation in computers or mobile phones there are scammers waiting to nail you. For
modelers things are certainly different than they were when the greatest generations
thrived. Its sad to see your past in the rear view mirror, not knowing whats ahead, but for
model history buffs the past was certainly glorious.
GOOD NEWS FOR FREDS MODEL WORLD CUSTOMERS IN GOOD
STANDINGAND NEW CUSTOMERS TOO.
In last months list, I printed in bold type the Freds Model World payment policy,
thinking this would improve payment times and discourage no payers or slow payers. No
dice. As of August 19, just ten days away from the September list, the basement was
filled with about 10 overdue orders. The total of about $600 in late payments covers
about 20 percent of my sons fall college tuition, due at the end of August.

These people forgot to pay, are paying way to lateor not at all. This summer, having
had my fill of this, I took a substantial number of people off of the mailing list. These
people are done buying from me. At the same time, I have maintained the usual size of
our monthly list, usually 25-26 pages. With less paying customers comes a better
opportunity for loyal customers and those in good standing to get a better choice of the
goodies on each list. Dont hesitate to load up on the good stuff while the less fortunate
miss out.
FREDS MODEL WORLD LIST SCHEDULE 9-15 TO 12-16
There seems to be some confusion as to when and how many times we publish a list per
year. Until 2013, we did a list about 10-11 times a year. Due to supply, demand and the
health of my middle age body, I reduced lists to nine times a year. Here are the dates lists
will start to be mailed from now through 2016.

FREDS PERSONAL WANT LIST

Just to let you know, I add about 30-35 kits, promos, builts and 1/24-1/25 scale die cast to my collection
each year. It has definitely become a challenge to find items interesting enough to put into my personal
goody box, so I take what I can get and accept the fact that I am unlikely to complete my want list any time
soon. The rare model market has become seriously diluted in this century due to the infiltration of ebay
into the hobby.
Kits dont just disappear; they go from an original owner to a serious (and possibly wealthy) collector, or to
possibly another seller, who will then jack up the price further and make it difficult for the middle class
hobbyist to afford it. The more I look at my own collection, accumulated over the past 15 or so years, the
more I realize how difficult these kits would be to find if I ever decided to sell and then rebuy the kit again
