Let me illustrate how easy it is to think
we know what Jesus means when he
talks about the kingdom. The first of
the beatitudes in Matthew says,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven.” So, if you’re
poor in spirit you get to go to heaven
when you die right? Is that indeed
what Jesus is saying? So when Jesus
says the kingdom of heaven that’s just
his way of saying heaven? If that’s true
what did Jesus mean just the chapter
before this (4:17) when he said,
“Repent for the kingdom of heaven is
near.” What did John the Baptist mean
when he said the same thing? Were
they simply saying that heaven (that
place where the saints go when they
die) was at hand, was near, was to be
expected immediately? Given the fact
that 2000 years have come and gone
since then there are some problems
with that interpretation. So what was
near in Jesus day; what was at hand? I
hope those questions illustrate the
need to sit and think for a minute
when we come across the phrase
‘kingdom of heaven’ in our bibles.
So just what is the kingdom of God or
the kingdom of heaven? That’s an ex-
