1. PROCEDURE
o First, a new iCON case was started by selecting New Project.
o Then, the Advanced Peng-Robinson property package

from

the

Thermodynamics Model drop-down list is selected.

o The Component window is chosen. All the chemicals used in this case were
keyed in, which are methanol, CH 3OH and water, H20. The settings were
applied.
o The simulation was started, where a material stream feed of methanol and
water was created by selecting Add Material Stream from the Simulation Tree
in the main flow sheet.
All the information given is keyed in the feed stream and reactors.

o This stream was then connected to a Splitter to split the mixture

o The outlet streams of the splitter was selected and renamed as Stream 1
and Stream 2.
o The first outlet stream from the splitter, Stream 1, goes through a distillation
column renamed as DC-1.
o In the configurations of DC-1, total condenser and kettle reboiler were
selected. The total number of trays was set as 16, and the feed tray on tray
12.
o At Spec/Estimates, the reflux ratio for DC-1 was set as 1.26 and the draw to
feed ratio was set as 0.96. A pressure value of 520 kPa was keyed in the first
and last stage pressure.
o The outlet product from Stream 2 undergoes further reaction in the component
valve to reduce pressure. The equipment was renamed as Valve.

o An outlet stream was created from Valve and connected to a distillation

column named DC-2. This stream was labelled Stream 3. In the
configurations, total condenser and kettle reboiler was selected. The number
of stages inserted was 13 trays, with the 9th tray as the feed tray.
o In Spec/Estimates for DC-2, the reflux ratio was set as 0.834 and the draw to
feed ratio was set as 0.96, similar to DC-1. The pressure value was set as 101
o

kPa at the first and last stage pressure.

Two outlet streams were created for each distillation column. The top and
bottom product stream of DC-1 was labelled Vapor-1 and Liquid-1, and Vapor-

2 and Liquid-2 for DC-2, respectively.

o The stimulation is run by clicking the run button and the results are obtained.
o The results will then be discussed in the discussion section and used to
answer the questions given.
o Repeat the steps using UNIQUAC and WILSONS MODEL.

4. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

1. What is molar flowrate before entering DC1 and DC2?
The molar flowrate before entering DC1 and DC2 is 1350 kgmol/hr.
2. How to reduced pressure in DC2?
Used valve to reduced pressure in DC2 before connecting to distillation
column 2(DC2).
3. What is the temperature at the bottom of DC1 and DC2?
At bottom of DC1 the temperature is 153.1 0C and at bottom DC2 temperature
is 99.90C.
4. Did the process achieve a methanol free from water? What is the purity of the
methanol? How to increase the purity?
The process did not achieve a methanol free from water. This is because the
composition of methanol at stream 5 is 0.52083 which is the methanol still
containing composition of water of 0.47917 in the outlet stream. It is same at
distillation column 2 which composition of methanol at stream 7 is same with
stream 5. So that methanol not free from water. The methanol can be purifying
by adding more distillation column.

5. DISCUSSION
This experiment shows the simulation of purification of methanol with water by
using ICON software system. The Thermodynamic model that has been used is
Advanced Peng-Robinson. Different types of model give different result thus help for
understanding better the effect of models on the calculation and the output result.
This simulation also had been done to understand the usage of valve and distillation
specification for purification process which in this experiment is purification of
methanol from water.
The process was began by passing through the binary mixture of methanol and
water as feed at 25 0C and 5.2 bar. The feed is being passed through a splitter with
the flow rate of 2700 kmol/hr and contains approximately equal molar of methanol
and water. Then, the feed is being split to be fed to 2 distillation column for
purification process. For the feed at DC1, the pressure and temperature is the same
as feed which are 25 0C and 5.2 bar respectively.
For feed at DC2, the temperature is 25.1 0C and the pressure is being reduced to
1.01 bar by using valve. The usage of valve help to reduce the pressure of the
system thus increase the value of temperature. The process of purification of
methanol is occur at the distillation column to get methanol that is nearly free of
water.
By using Advanced Peng-Robinson, the molar flowrate before entering DC1 and
DC2 is the same which is 1350 kmol/hr. The pressure of the stream before entering
DC1 is 5.2 bar which is the same as the feed while the pressure thet enter DC2 is
being reduced to 1.01 bar. The pressure is being reduced by using valve placed at
the stream 2.
The temperature at bottom of DC1 and DC2 is 153.1 0C and 99.9 0C respectively.
The composition of methanol and water from DC1 and DC2is the same which is
0.52083 and 0.47917 rspectively at the outlet streams. The process does not achieve
a product of methanol that is free of water. More distillation column is adding to the
process will help to purify the methanol better thus produce the methanol free of
water.

6. CONCLUSION
Distillation operation is a method of separation of substances based on their
differences in volatilities. In simple distillation, all the hot vapors produced are
immediately channeled into a condenser which then cools and condenses the
vapors. Its composition will be identical to the composition of the vapors at a given
temperature and pressure and can be computed from Raoults Law.
To conclude this stimulation of split ratio and distillation column of methanol and
water it is shown that the mole fraction in Advanced Peng-Robinson are 0.52083 for
both DC and mole flowrates are 1296kmol/hr for both DC in WILSONs and
UNIQUACs models.
Furthermore, it can be conclude that the process did not achieve a methanol
that is free of water. Suggestion given are to make sure there are loop stream that
can go back to the reactor before it is split using splitter. Furthermore, addition of
distillation column would be efficient to increase the purification of methanol.
Moreover, the final temperature of bottom known as liquid stream in DC2 are
99.9C which are the same for all the model that are used in this stimulation and a
slight difference of 0.3C in the DC1 for Advanced Peng-Robinson compared to
WILSON and UNIQUAC.
