Sovereign Gold Bonds Scheme Salient Features

1. Theschemewillhelpinreducingthedemandforphysicalgoldbyshiftingapartoftheestimated300
tonsofphysicalbarsandcoinspurchasedeveryyearforInvestmentintogoldbonds.Sincemostofthe
demandforgoldinIndiaismetthroughimports,thisschemewill,ultimatelyhelpinmaintainingthe
country'sCurrentAccountDeficitwithinsustainablelimits.
2. SovereignGoldBondswillbeissuedonbehalfoftheGovtofIndiabytheRBI,onpaymentofrupees
anddenominatedingramsofgold.
3. ThebondwouldberestrictedforsaletoresidentIndianentities.Thecaponbondsthatmaybebought
byanentitywouldbeatasuitablelevel,notmorethan500gramsperpersonperyear.
4. TheGovernmentwillissuebondswitharateofinterest,eitherfloatingorfixed,tobedecidedbythe
Government.
5. Thebondswillbeavailablebothindematandpaperformandindenominationsof5,10,50,100grams
ofgoldorotherdenominations.
6. Banks/NBFCs/PostOffices/NationalSavingCertificate(NSC)agentsandothers,asspecified,may
collectmoney/redeembondsonbehalfofthegovernment(forafee,theamountwouldbeas
decided).
7. Thetenureofthebondcouldbeforaminimumof5to7years,sothatitwouldprotectinvestorsfrom
mediumtermvolatilityingoldprices.Sincethebond,willbeapartofthesovereignborrowing,these
wouldneedtobewithinthefiscaldeficittargetfor201516andonwards.
8. Bondscanbeusedascollateralforloans.Bondstobeeasilysoldandtradedonexchangestoallow
earlyexitsforinvestorswhomaysodesire.
9. TheamountreceivedfromthebondswillbeusedbyGolinlieuofgovernmentborrowingandthe
notionalinterestsavedonthisamountwouldbecreditedinanaccount"GoldReserveFund"whichwill
becreated.
10. Onmaturity,theredemptionwillbeinrupeeamountonly.Therateofinterestonthebondswillbe
calculatedonthevalueofthegoldatthetimeofinvestment.Theprincipalamountofinvestment,
whichisdenominatedingramsofgold,willberedeemedatthepriceofgoldatthattime.Iftheprice
ofgoldhasfallenfromthetimethattheinvestmentwasmade,orforanyotherreason,thedepositor
willbegivenanoptiontorolloverthebondforthreeormoreyears.
