As Albertas senior population is projected to grow

substantially over the next 25 years, transportation
issues facing Strathmores aging population no longer remain local a need accelerating rapidly across
the province.
According to Statistics Canada, the proportion
making up the population aged 65 and older in Alberta is expected to jump to over 17 per cent over
the next couple decades from 11.2 per cent in 2013.
Going hand-in-hand with an aging population are
a myriad of problems already in need of attention,
especially transportation, where seniors are transitioning from behind the steering wheel to the passenger seat due to medical reasons, choice, or lack
of a vehicle.
In Strathmore, a steady relocation of businesses to
the east side of town and the absence of a proper
local transportation system available to accommodate their financial and physical need has left Strathmores seniors stranded at hospitals and angered
over losing their independence.
Strathmores seniors currently make up 15 per
cent of its 13,327-large population. While taxi service proved too expensive for some seniors, and
the Strathmore Handi-Bus Association is struggling
to justify additional costs with extended hours and
drivers, the topic surged to the top of the recently
established Senior Advisory Committees priority list.
This is an area where seniors have very different needs in transportation, and the people with the
most concerns are the ones with certain types of
walkers and or in wheelchairs, said Ethel Bertram
with the Senior Advisory Committee on Oct. 17 at
the towns regular council meeting.
One very critical need for these people is when
theyre being discharged from the hospital after six
p.m. They have no means of transportation home.
This has already led to considerable expense and
horror stories.
The problems arose when seniors were taken by
ambulance to the Strathmore hospital, and in some
cases facilities in Calgary. With no family nearby and
being discharged in the late hours of the night, seniors were left to fend for themselves for quite some
time. While the Handi-Bus has called in their drivers
to make emergency trips to Calgary and the hospitals, changes over the summer are making it even
more difficult for those in a bind.
Trying to operate this thing into 10,11, 12 oclock
at night does not make financial sense, said Councillor Rocky Blokland, who represents the town on
the Handi-Bus committee.

Strathmore
small businesses
recognized
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Five local businesses were
singled out for their exceptional efforts among the
Strathmore business community on Oct. 21, when
they were presented with an
award highlighting individual achievements.
Community Futures Wildrose, The Newsy Neighbour, the Animal Care Centre,
Field Stone Fruit Wineries,
and Home Hardware stood
out in their categories during the Strathmore Chamber
of Commerce Small Business
Awards, while surrounded
by 80 community members
and fellow nominees.
Its nice to know that
somebody appreciates us after all the hard work weve
put in, said Glenn Ellingson, partner with the winery,
who won the Rural Business
Award.
We are recognized nationally in the United States.
Its nice to be recognized locally.
He added the success of
the companys product stems
from large crowds that visit
the farm each year, travelling from across Canada and
as far-reaching as Europe.
As the economy continues to fluctuate, Chamber
president Waldo Munoz felt
it was the proper time to celebrate the local success. He
further praised Strathmore
businesses on their service
to the community.
In this town, Strathmore,
you will succeed, said Munoz.
Youve got so much potential here. Not just for you,
but also for generations to
come and I hope that you
take these words Im saying to you to heart. This
is a very good community
and united. We can succeed

and overcome any economy

downfalls and stick together
as one.
Among the many guests
was Strathmore-Brooks MLA
Derek Fildebrandt, who recognized the hardships facing
small businesses and job creators today, especially when
facing large tax hikes and
less-than-business-friendly
regulation changes. According to Fildebrandt, the event
was a great way to highlight
those businesses supporting the community, tax base,
and their employees.
As a community, for us,
its important for those people because without job creators there are no jobs said
Fildebrandt.
And without tax payers,
theres no government and
this is some of the best our
community has to offer.
Fildebrandt added that
many businesses are leary of
making capital investments
but continue to operate.
Alberta has been through
depressions but weve come
out as the strongest in Canada, said Fildebrandt.
I think the government
needs to be there for businesses. The government
should not be doing things
to make it harder to do business in an economy that difficult.
For
Strathmore
Hard
Hardware
owner
Perry
Banadyga, the Community
Service Excellence Award
was not about the individual
recognition but the jobs his
employees perform every
day.
The kudos dont belong
to me, they belong to my
staff, said Banadyga.
Were really fortunate
we have some really good
people who are long-term
people.
I think weve got a bit of
a culture that weve tried to

Q: How does Caveat Emptor apply?

A: Caveat Emptor. Buyer Beware. When

someone buys a car, they can research the

vehicle, read reviews, as well as test-drive
that car before they purchase. Death does not
allow for that test it out first type of shopping.
In fact, it is written in legislation that the
funeral industry is not permitted to work by
the philosophy of Caveat Emptor. With one
internet search, you can find articles speaking
of the unscrupulous nature of funeral directors.
The reality of the situation is that, like any
industry, there are always some immoral
individuals. However, the vast majority of
funeral homes will do whatever is possible to
meet the needs of grieving families. Funeral
directors are required to explain everything
to a family, knowing that families are often
unfamiliar with the industry. As such, Caveat
Emptor does not and cannot apply in the
funeral industry.

Senior Advisory Committee

looks into needs
Continued from Page 1

We get encumbered with all sorts of
extra costs, extra dispatchers, extra drivers, extra vehicles. As far as people getting discharged at the hospital, if theyre
stuck we will get them out of there, but
were trying to look for alternative solutions to that. I agree its a problem.
Bertram suggested a bus service, running two days a week, with scheduled
stops throughout town, costing seniors
approximately $5, with the possibility
of being used by other senior groups or
clubs for day trips.
Having studied the problem across
the province, the Medically At-Risk
Driver Centre, in collaboration with
the University of Alberta, is addressing
the unmet need in rural and urban Alberta by providing targeted information
on the implementation of an alternative transportation service system for
seniors. The free half-day workshop,
which offered a snapshot of the toolkit,
was already delivered to Medicine Hat
and Lethbridge. The events attracted
businesses, non-profits, Handi-Bus Societies, and politicians, and turned out
to be two-fold for the organization in
receiving much of the hoped-for feedback.
Much like the rest of Canada, Albertas population is aging too and seniors
today typically make up 10 to 30 per
cent of the community populations and
this proportion will steadily increase
over the next 30 years, said Mayank
Rehani, research coordinator with the
Medically At-Risk Driver Centre.

One model does not fit all seniors. A

lack of access to transportation results
in unmet needs including lack of access
to medical services and other necessary
services, such as grocery shopping and
banking. Lack of transportation also
leads to poor quality of life overall.
The organization completed a provincial survey, a Capital Regional Board
survey, and a community service survey
in Wainwright, all of which revealed
senior transportation to be an unmet
need. Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton,
Cold Lake, and Grande Prairie will also
be privy to the workshop in the near
future.
For now, town council asked the Senior Advisory Committee, which also
identified senior housing to be another
issue, to meet with different groups,
conduct surveys, and find out the greatest need from the broadest base of seniors.
The Medically At-Risk Drivers Centre
workshop will take place in Calgary on
Nov. 19. For more information and to
find services dedicated to seniors within the community visit www.mard.ualberta.ca.

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a very effective

method of birth control. However only 5% of
women use that method. Compared to birth control
pills where there are 5-9 pregnancies per 100 women
per year, for an IUD it is 1 out of 100. IUDs do not
increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease or
ectopic pregnancies. Its a choice to consider as an
alternative to the pill.
Its easy to confuse the term nutritionist and a
registered dietitian. The latter can be the former
but the former is most often not the latter. Anyone
can call themselves a nutritionist but a registered
dietitian must have a bachelor or masters degree
in nutrition and have done an internship of practical
work before being registered. For best on nutrition
advice, seek out an registered dietitian.
Another space-age medical device available
since 2012 is a handheld apparatus that will record

Hemorrhoids often arent noticed until there is

Pick-up truck uses wrong drivethrough at ATB Financial

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Two ATB Financial employees were
distressed and treated for minor injuries on Oct. 23 after a driver took the
banks drive-through service literally.
Off-duty at the time, Cpl. Jay Salmon
drove by the Ranch Market area bearing witness when a Ford pick-up truck
crashed into the branch just before
5:45 p.m., surprising two employees
who remained in the building after
hours and causing considerable damage to two of the offices at the front
of the building. Strathmore RCMP reported only minor injuries as a result
of the collision for all parties involved,
who were treated at the scene.
Were dealing with it as a collision,
there was nothing really to indicate
any criminal actions at that point,
said Salmon on Oct. 26.
Its still under investigation so
there may be some provincial statutes
that were looking at, but as far as the
criminal aspect, I dont believe were
pursuing any further on that.
The two ATB Financial team members present during the accident re-

turned to work on Monday, but were

unsettled by last weeks events. A
spokesperson for the branch addressed the incident adding that the
banks disaster recovery mode took
effect when the incident occurred.
The measure included having a crew
on the scene to ensure the area was
secure and locked-up, and the alarm
system was still in working order.
Our biggest concern was for everybodys well being, so obviously we
had a couple of team members who
were there when it happened who
were shaken up and our concern is for
them, said Barry Strader, corporate
reporter with ATB Financial. So luckily they were OK and were thankful
for that, and were really hopeful that
the driver is OK.
While it was back to business as
usual for the financial institution earlier this week, Strader added, the extent of the damage still needs to be
assessed and repairs are expected to
take one to two months to complete.
Strathmore RCMP were unable to
disclose any information regarding
the driver as the investigation is now
closed without charges being laid.

Wildrose sailing through third quarter:

unprecedented support locally
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Albeit the damage caused by the
heavily criticized actions of 11 Wildrose
Alliance Party members crossing the
floor to the Progressive Conservative
Party nearly a year ago - actions that
decimated the partys number of legislative representatives and fuelled feelings of deception the remaining party
members picked themselves up, dusted
themselves off, and worked relentlessly
for a 360 degree turnaround, showing
newfound strength in the party and the
Strathmore-Brooks constituency.
Not only was the Oct. 15 annual general meeting for the Strathmore-Brooks
constituency described as the largest
in its history, the Strathmore-Brooks
Constituency Association board also
more than doubled in size, elected a
new Strathmore-based president, and
showed greater diversity in representing areas throughout the constituency
than before.
Shortly after the AGM, the Wildrose
Party stole the spotlight province-wide
with the reveal of the third-quarter fundraising totals that showed the party
with a jaw-dropping $263,875 leaving in their wake the New Democratic
Party with $82,745, the Alberta Liberal
Party at $29,285, and the Progressive
Conservative Party with $15,575.
The Wildrose in the last three months
raised 18 times as much money as the
PC party and three times as much as
the NDP, said Strathmore-Brooks MLA
Derek Fildebrandt. In StrathmoreBrooks alone we raised 50 per cent of
the total that the entire PC Party of Alberta raised across the entire province.
I was mostly surprised that the NDP
couldnt raise more money. Youd think
they just won an election, their supporters would be pretty enthusiastic.
On June 22, Bill 1: An Act to Renew
Democracy was passed in the legislature to ban, retroactively to June 15, any
corporate or union donations to political campaigns. Known as a grassroots
campaign, the Wildrose Party faced
minimal roadblocks in their fundraising
effort as a result of the changes, Fildbrandt said. He added the same wasnt
true for the PC Party that previously
relied on corporates deep pockets. Under the new legislature, individuals are
now limited to maximum contributions
of $15,000 a year.
In addition to financial backing
throughout Alberta, the party also experienced local support. Former Strathmore-Brooks Constituency Association
Chief Financial Officer Ronda Klem-

mensen was chosen as president of the

Constituency Association, which now
has a board of 21 members and two
pending. The board size, which cannot
exceed 30 members, is an indication of
the partys efforts stretching over the
past 10 months after numbers fell to 4
from roughly 10.
It never crossed my mind, but we had
quite the dissolution of the board when
the floor crossing happened and the
president resigned, said Klemmensen.
A lot of the members just lost faith in
the work they were doing. There were
a few of us who hung in there. This is
the most diverse board that weve had,
and the largest board that StrathmoreBrooks has had.
The grandmother of almost 10, one to
be born in December, moved to Strathmore 11-and-a-half years ago and got
involved with the party to prove that
one voice does make a difference. Her
accounting background currently
worked as the accountant for Namaka
Farms made her the ideal candidate
for the chief financial officer position
three years ago. Klemmensen was one
of the original members that rebuilt the
board, after the occurrence of the floor
crossing that included then-MLA Jason
Hale.
According to Klemmensen the larger numbers of board members allow
the association to make decisions effectively; she stated the absence of a
few members during a meeting proves
more difficult in the decision-making
process when the group is small to begin with.
We look at where we are today, and
it was really something to look back
and think about how far weve come,
said Fildebrandt. After we were betrayed we had a very small board, just
a few people who stuck around. And
we rebuilt, in the lead up to and during
the campaign, and now I believe were
quite possibly the strongest constituency association in the province.
Having depleted their funds in the
previous election, fundraising will be
the associations primary focus. Money raised will aid in financing Fildebrandts meet-and-greets, room rentals,
and serving refreshments.
As membership continues to climb,
latest numbers showed that the Strathmore-Brooks constituency is currently
made up of 510 Wildrose Party members.
While members are hopeful for greater successes in the future, for now the
association will focus their efforts locally and ensure Fildebrandts ongoing
presence in the constituency.

Government support provides crisis shelter

with greater services
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Amid a sputtering economy that left supplies low
and demand on the rise among Alberta crisis shelters, an announcement by the NDP government a
month ago to disperse $15 million to the organizations is raising enthusiasm in Strathmore to implement greater services where extreme demand resulted in hundreds of families being turned away
last year.
The Alberta governments campaign promise
follow-through is a welcomed proclamation by the
province, as money distributed is designated to operational increases and staffing positions.
For the Wheatland Crisis Society, also known as
Strathmores shelter, a seven per cent increase in
operational costs, funding for a full-time child trauma counsellor and two-and-a-half new outreach
workers, will allow the service to provide better
services for the trauma-informed agency.
We want to really specify and focus on children
and what those trauma experiences have been like
and how they can move forward and start to look
at how that impacted their ability to learn, their social skills, and success in school, said Wanda McGinnis, CEO of the Wheatland Crisis Society.
One of the moves shelters and the community
at large are making, is looking at domestic violence
in a trauma-informed way, recognizing that many
of our families, in particular children come to us
with lifetime of traumatic experiences. So we want
to bring a counsellor on board that can really address that.
The seven per cent increase will provide the
possibility for an increase in counselling services, greater staff training opportunities, and assist
workers in providing more in-person presence.
With more outreach presence in the communities,
McGinnis expects it will help address issues in surrounding communities that often face isolation.
While Alberta crisis shelters let out a sigh of relief over the funding increases, the timing was relevant, as the 25-bed Wheatland Crisis shelter had
been sitting at capacity. For the 2014-2015 budget
year, the shelter accommodated 171 adults and
154 children. In contrast, the shelter was unable
to provide accommodations and services to 363
adults and 403 children all of whom were offered
participation in a risk assessment, safety planning,
and were then provided with resources. Often the

Day

shelter also advocated for the individuals to ensure

those turned away had a safe secure place to go.
While the economy makes us busier, it also
makes things more difficult for women and men
trying to make the decision to leave quite simply
because everyone is trying to tap into the same
low income services in the community when the
economy gets harder, said McGinnis. Sadly sheltering is a recession-proof industry. The worse the
economy is, the more need for domestic violence
response. This government has pledged a commitment to domestic violence and womens shelters
early on even in their campaign platform. So certainly we were hopeful that that was actually going
to come to fruition.
The Wheatland Crisis Shelter, a facility not gender-specific when dealing with domestic abuse,
has noticed longer than average stays among their
clients. Stays currently extend to 17 days, above
the provincial average of 14 days. Compared to 10
years ago, the average stay was sitting at 13, while
provincially people remained in the facilities for
10 days. According to McGinnis, many clients are
exceeding the 21-day contract, and even have one
client that has already stayed for three months due
to a lack of accessibility to affordable housing.
Included in the $15 million financial injection
are 84 new outreach support workers, and 40 child
and youth counsellors.
Todays announcement is evidence that the government of Alberta is taking a holistic approach to
address violence and abuse against women by ensuring that there are an array of supports available
in communities throughout the province, said Jan
Reimer, Executive Director of the Alberta Council
of Women s Shelters (ACWS).
[It] recognizes that shelter expertise is an essential part of an informed women-centred collaboration approach.
Not having received automatic year-to-year increases from the government, the 24-staff-member
Strathmore-based shelter fundraises a lot of their
operational costs. While the government funds
$4,000 a year for food, the organization has to raise
an additional $12,000 to supplement the food budget for the year an area where the seven per cent
increase will provide assistance.
Although the shelter identified a lack of affordable housing for those using the shelter service,
the focus currently is on implementing the proposed services as soon as possible.

LETS BE A COMMUNITY
This time of year is great for discovering what community really looks
like. So many people out riding their
bikes, walking, talking to neighbors
over the fence or sitting on the step.
Sometimes communities gather
together to work towards projects
like new parks, or acts of support for
members with needs.
Sometimes communities gather for
block parties or social events, just
because we can. But I wonder if we
truly understand what community
means.
The root of the word has three
components
COM meaning together MUNIS
meaning links and a Latin suffix
ITY which means small or intimate.
Being a community then means a
small or intimate group that links
together, typically, at least I hope in
our setting, for the common good.
At times, as I watch our community it
saddens me, because it seems as if
we have lost that linking. Oh sure, we
may wave at a neighbour, perhaps
even nod or say hello. But have we
really linked with one another. Do
you know your neighbors name?
Would you know, would they know,
if there was a need or a concern?
Or are we more likely to just stick to
ourselves, do the polite things, and
carry on?
Long ago, Jesus came and encouraged the formation of communities
to care for and uplift one another,
in life, in worship, in support, in

celebration, in times of crisis. For

a long span of time, that was the
norm. If you remember the TV shows
Little House on the Prairie or The
Waltons, you will well remember
the links and the bonds and the cooperation and compassion that was
part of the community. Interestingly,
in both shows, the starting point for
that was twofold, FAMILIES AND
WORSHIP OR PRAYER. But somehow, that model seems to be fading
in our world today.
We blessed to have the community
we have, we do care for one another,
we do great things together, but I
wonder, especially when we are
out and about so much more, in our
yards, for walks, at the parks perhaps we could begin the process of
uniting as a community once again.
Getting to know our neighbors.
Introducing ourselves, sharing a
glass of lemonade or a cup of coffee
while sitting on the steps being
a bit more purposeful about linking
together for the common good of
each and every one of us.
Because when we do that, we fulfill
what Christ called us to be about, to
be caring, compassionate examples
of his Love for others. St. Paul wrote
in Philippians 2:4, Let each of you
look not only to his own interests, but
also to the interests of others.

A collaboration between
Sagewood Senior Community
and a distinct Calgary-based
daycare Kids U, is providing
Strathmores youngest with
a chance to participate in
brain-based learning through
new approaches and with
the help of seniors.
The
program,
which
launched over a month ago,
encourages children aged 19
months to six years to learn
activities through specific
teachings focused on the development of the left side of
the brain and right side.
The pre-school program
incorporates the methods of
Maria Montessori and Reggio Emilia. The Montessori
method explores the left side
of the brain where the child
is set up with freedom within
limits, carefully prepared environment that provides exposure to materials and experiences. The Reggio Emilia
method is about teaching the
child about their senses and
learning through their interests.
The Strathmore classroom
is still in its early stages, but
is gaining feedback from parents and the community.
We find through our communication with parents,

they are very interested in

our programming, said Jasdeep Sidhu, program supervisor. However I find they
dont know much about it.
They dont have that knowledge aspect to it, where as
I feel they arent very communicative asking us these
questions. They dont really
approach us in that way. We
want them to know that we
are here wanting to work
with their children to develop those executive functions
and prepare them for their
later school years.
Its kind of based on the
childs interest, said Jenna
Mehlhaff, the right brain
teacher. And thats what the
planning base surrounds. We
do long-term projects like
were doing a fall/autumn
theme right now. We go on
nature walks and go and
collect pieces of nature and
put them into the classroom
and explore all our different
senses and a lot of Reggio
Emilias about the different
senses.
All this revolved around
teaching the children about
the 100 languages of the children, which means learning
through writing, movement,
and open-ended activities as
well as a focus on the community and parenting too.
You do a lot of document-

ing and observations and thats where

you start youre planning from, said
Mehlhaff. Youre just the assistant in
their learning. Youre asking them what
they want to learn about and what they
know about things and what they want
to learn and so you go based off that.
The Maria Montessori method involves the teacher having a readily appropriate environment for the children
and for them to have access to materials
such as books and other education related materials.
All the materials are organized into
different sections and on the shelf, said
Becca Zajic, left-brain teacher. So the
children at free will can go and get an
item off the shelf. They can put it down,
they can work with it, admire it, experience it. Its very much work-based
learning like we have practical life in
the classroom. Everything is like having a kitchen, learning how to do the
dishes or sweeping up.
Sagewood Seniors Community general manager Michelle Pham has been excited about what Kids U would be able
to offer to Age Care through a reading
program
They love it, said Pham. Anytime
the residents have an opportunity to
spend time with the kids, they really
love that interaction. Anytime they see
children its really uplifting for them.
Pham mentioned that the programs
focus is to provide a better way of life.

Thoughts on the federal election

DEREK FILDEBRANDT
Strathmore-Brooks MLA and the Wildrose Shadow
Minister of Finance

You can pick your friends. You cant pick your
family. You can pick your government, but youre
mostly struck with what several million others have
picked for you.
As it happens I and the vast majority of Albertans are stuck with what others picked for us.
Thats the way democracy works.
As many of you know, the Wildrose Party and I
generally support the Conservative Party of Canada at a federal level (not to be confused with the
very different PC Party of Alberta on the provincial
level).
I congratulate Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau
on his win, as well as our new local Conservative
MP, Martin Shields.
I have serious concerns about the capacity of
Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau and his Liberals. However, it is not the end of the world to be
on the losing side, as many partisans feel during
or after elections. As a mature democracy, we are
capable of surviving a restoration of the Trudeau
dynasty, however painful it may be.
And while no political party ever volunteers for
it, losing an election can (sometimes) be a positive
and regenerating process. The Conservative Party
of Canada is certainly in need of such a process
right now.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has left his mark
on Canadian history and will be remembered as a
successful leader. He united two dilapidated warring conservative factions facing oblivion into a
single party that ended a long period of Liberal
rule. He steadily increased the vote share of the
Conservatives in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2011.
Beyond electoral success, he did many things for
Canada. He ended the Wheat Boards oppressive
monopoly over Western Canadian grain farmers.
He scrapped the Long Gun Registry and the pervote subsidy to political parties. He passed the Accountability Act following the Liberal Sponsorship
Scandal. He wrestled the federal governments deficit to the ground, and he cut taxes on the middle
class and job creators.
There is much to be proud of, but it isnt an unblemished record.
While the Liberals, NDP and Bloc certainly deserve much of the blame for the corporate auto
bailout and the plunge back into deficit in 2008-09,
the Conservatives adopted these ideas as their own
and arguably went much further than was politically required by the opposition. This left federal
spending out of control for several years and resulted in adding $150 billion to the national debt.

While taxes were cut, not all tax changes were

necessarily positive. The Income Tax Act is now
3,314 pages long and riddled with dozens upon
dozens of exemptions which narrowly target tax
relief, making it difficult to provide tax relief on a
broader basis.
Corporate welfare subsidies abound to every special interest group that can complain loud enough,
and the Equalization program continues to suck
money out of Alberta to reward the Ontario Liberal
government for driving that once proud economy
into the ground.
While the Conservatives never had a scandal that
held a candle to the Sponsorship Scandal, they
have had serious ethical breaches, la Mike Duffy.
While no prime minister has ever taken Senate reform more seriously than Stephen Harper, many of
the appointments made to the Red Chamber have
been as poor as those made by Liberal prime ministers before him. Canadians expected the Conservatives to hold themselves to a higher standard.
On balance, Stephen Harper has been a successful prime minister, but its hard not to feel that the
last four years contained more than a few missed
opportunities.
Canadian conservatives may overwhelmingly
support the Conservative Party, but they no longer
do so with the same enthusiasm that they once did.
The energy and mission that possessed the Conservatives to storm Ottawa in 2004, 2006 and 2008
waned by 2011. It waned further in 2015.
The Conservatives appear to have relied on the
self-evident insufficiency of Trudeau and Mulcair
to bring a default victory to them. The Conservatives gave Canadians many reasons to vote against
Trudeau, but failed to provide Canadians a compelling reason to vote for the Conservatives.
I personally had a hard time understanding what
the Conservatives were seeking in a new mandate,
other than to deprive Justin Trudeau of his first real
job.
I am worried about what a Trudeau Restoration
means for Canada and especially for Alberta. But
clearly conservatives need to reflect and learn from
Mondays defeat.
In the meantime, Alberta and the West are largely
left outside of the federal government again. I sincerely hope that Mr. Trudeau will appreciate the
immense contribution that Alberta makes to confederation and that we will be as an equal partner.
Our new federal MP Martin Shields will like the
Wildrose have a role in the Official Opposition in
holding the government to account, and ensuring
that our region is not forgotten by those represented by the Liberals.
If history is any indication, it will be an important
job.

concerned with the lack of
feedback from recognized
art groups in town, and
asked administration to send
a copy of the policy to the
organizations for review be-

fore bringing the issue back

before council.
Ive had lots of time to go
over this Public Arts Policy
and I think its a wonderful
piece of work and I really
congratulate the people who
worked on this committee
and the review committee,
as it really is a great policy
and I think its one that will
serve the community, said
Councillor Denise Peterson.
In asking to have this
brought forward some time
ago one of the things that
was also requested and acceded to by administration
at the time was that a draft
policy would go forward to
the arts community for input prior to coming to town
council.
Peterson asked for the
policy to be sent to three
specific groups within the
area the Strathmore Musical Arts Society, the Strathmore Theatre Players, and
the Wheatland Society for
the Arts. Council also considered a copy to be sent to
other art groups in Strathmore and the district.
The Public Art Policy,
which pertains to public
spaces only, provides the

foundation for the acquisition, installation, maintenance, programming, and

management of public art for
the Town of Strathmore. As a
result the policy will serve to
attract creative workers and
businesses, ensure a lasting
legacy, build a visually rich
environment, expand knowledge and understanding of
art, encourage the growth of
a culturally informed public,
and open doors for art opportunities that are freely accessible to everyone.
To aid in its success is
the creation of an advisory
committee, called the Public Art Board comprised of
various stakeholders in the
community. Responsibilities
include developing a Public
Arts Master Plan, and will
champion for public art, procedures, plans, guidelines,
advise on public art policies,
and deal with issues associated with Strathmore.
The policy also raised
questions among the community, as Councillor Pat
Fule said the topic was
brought up at the Downtown Design Review Committees Oct. 20 meeting.

Art groups get a say

Continued from Page 10
The committee wondered
about the towns responsibility, in regards to maintenance or removal, when an
accepted art piece is damaged. Other
councillors
agreed that council would be
in charge of the art.
Administration
assured
council that annual funds
will be budgeted towards the
maintenance and installation
for public art and that council will be the final approving body for all proposed art
projects.
Administrations role will
also consist of filling a seat
on the board, coordinating
the implementation for the
Public Arts Master Plan
which council is the final approving body for - managing
the budgeted annual funds,

liaising with the board in

the planning and development of public art, establishing an ongoing maintenance
program and coordinating
the installation of public art
projects.
Councillor Steve Grajczyk sought the opinion of
Councillor Peterson to her
proposed motion, concerned
that by sending the policy to
the art groups the document
could change considerably.
However, Peterson stated
she was not concerned.
Council voted unanimously, with the absence of Mayor
Ell, to direct administration
to send a copy to the three
recognized and previously
mentioned art groups. The
motion also states that the issue be brought back in front
of council at an appropriate
time.

Six months on: Nepal recovers with help from Strathmore humanitarian
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Its been a rewarding year for Sean
Freeman, who, after providing humanitarian aid to Ebola-ridden Sierra Leone
last December and then to Hurricane
Haiyans devastation in the Philippines,
spent six weeks surrounded by tremors, mudslides, and monsoons while
helping the disaster-stricken Nepal get
their field hospital up and running.
Freeman, a Canadian Red Cross technician delegate who returned to Canada
three weeks ago, was recruited for his
firefighting and electrician background.
Its been six months since Nepal one of the poorest and least developed
countries in the world - was struck
by two colossal earthquakes on April
25 and May 12. With 9,000 casualties,
22,000 injured, and hundreds of thousands of people displaced, technicians
helped with electrical, water and sanitation, shelter, general trades, set up
tents, and internet communications in
disaster-and-conflict-devastated areas.
As part of the Canadian Red Crosss
Emergency Response Unit (ERU), Freeman ensured operations ran smoothly,

dealt with the upkeep of the field hospital, supplied power by hooking up
to the local electrical system, and any
other jobs required in addition to the
regular medical tasks.
It doesnt matter what part of the
world youre in, you end up with a major disaster, you need help from the rest
of the world to recover, said Freeman.
Theres still a great need in Nepal for
all kinds of things. With shelter and water and sanitation. There are still people
over there doing the training. I helped
them with the ability to handle their
own disasters.
While the team in Nepal, which consisted of over 110, recently moved into
the recovery phase, Kathmandus damage is still widespread, mudslides were
heard nearby, and rebuilding remained
in progress, Freeman recalled.
Just over the past year, the Canadian
Red Cross was involved in 236 emergency and recovery missions in 51
countries. The organization is also involved in mother, newborn, and childhealth, as well as disaster preparedness, and violence prevention. Yet their
efforts closer to home have gained the
association even more recognition and

volunteers.
People volunteer for various reasons, but of course the primary one is
to contribute to people in need its
the heart of the Red Cross, it spreads
across the country, and I believe we
have 20,000 volunteers across all the
various programs that we run in Canada, said Diana Coulter, Canadian Red
Cross Communications Advisor for
western Canada.
In Alberta, with the southern Alberta
floods in 2013, and the wildfires in Saskatchewan this past summer, I think the
profile of the work the Red Cross has
been doing in the country is probably
encouraging more people to volunteer.
But we always need more volunteers,
they are the heart of our organization.
The Canadian Red Cross prides itself
on being the first agency in and often
the last one out of a disaster situation.
Coulter expects the focus over the next
18 months will be placed on helping with ongoing recovery, rebuilding
homes, ensuring proper sanitation and
water facilities, re-establishing jobs, and
rebuilding hospitals. While the work
continues in Nepal, the Philippines, Sierra Leone, and other missions around

Strathmore resident Sean Freeman recently returned from his humanitarian work as a Canadian

and repairs.

the world, for now, Freeman is staying

put in Strathmore to make up some
much deserved quality time with this
family.
I probably wont be doing as many
missions as I had this year, Freeman said. Ill still be on the list when
theres something that that comes up
and Ill go whenever Im able. I really
enjoy the work, and its really important work, but I have a daughter whos
really young and it takes a lot of time
away from her. Im missing out I guess.
The organization is always appreciative to the many donors that make their
work possible. For more information

Cold Laser is a Low Level Laser Therapy that uses healing laser light to
stimulate biological processes below the skin surface. Just as plants use
sunlight to photosynthesize carbohydrates in their cells, Cold Laser light
stimulates the formation and release of our bodys own healing chemical
compounds. In low level laser therapy, the infrared laser energy has a
stimulating effect on tissues by increasing cellular energy.
Cold Laser stimulates the production of collagen, as well as stimulating
lymphatic flow which helps to eliminate toxins and excess fluids from
the tissues. Studies have shown that the diameter of lymph vessels and
lymph flow rates can be doubled with the use of Cold Laser therapy. By
increasing the activity of fibroblasts in the connective tissue, collagen is
produced, aiding the repair process and stimulating proper tissue granulation to heal inflamed tissues.
Low Level Laser Therapy is an effective theraphy that works in harmony
with the bodys own healing and pain relieving mechanisms. There are
no harmful side effects from this type of laser therapy.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical, non-chemical, non-invasive method of skin resurfacing. Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin and removes skin debris, resulting in firmer more youthful looking skin. Repeating this process stimulates the production of new skin cells and increases
the levels of collagen and elastin which improves the appearance of the
skin.
Microdermabrasion buffs the skin of fine lines and pigmentation while refining the texture and hue. Repeated treatments yield excellent results for
scar revision whether from acne, chicken pox or surgery and addressing
deep discoloration, melanosis and tattoo reduction. Although there are
small immediate results, by the third or fourth treatment there is a clear
positive improvement in the appearance of the skin.
Treatments available for
Acne Eye Bags Anti-Aging Sun Damage and Lip Plumping
Reducing Broken Capillaries Treating Age Spots
Healing Scars and Wounds Wrinkles and Fine Lines
Rosacea, Psoriasis and Ezema Hair Reduction
Alopecia and Dark Circles

Treatments can take 6 to 12 weeks for results

Rosebud musician and actor Travis Friesen made his own
dream came true in October, when he opened Kith and Kin
Artisan Wares in Rosebuds old fire hall.
In my first year as a student here in Rosebud in 2004,
Friesen said, on the way to class and on the way home from
class, I would look at the fire hall, and I heard rumours that
theyre looking to build a new fire hall.
He thought, Wouldnt it be cool to take this (old) fire hall
and turn it into something?
Two years ago, he purchased that old building and has
gradually transformed it into a gift shop.
The big aim is to have a gallery feel in the store, but that
its at price points that are accessible to everyone, Friesen
said. Im really focusing on the artisan craft merchandise.
My focus is to offer as much handmade local craft and art as
I can.
Its just super cool to be part of that, to have the privilege
of seeing a daydream realized. Not only does it give me an
opportunity to create beautiful wares, whether it be pottery
or beeswax candles or stained glass or woodworking, and
build that and share it with others, but its also the space itself

that Ive created ... It also gives other people in the hamlet,
and in the surrounding communities, an opportunity to share
their work.
Kjel Erickson, who grew up in Rosebud, is making cutting
boards from exotic woods. And Glenda Warkentin Graham,
another Rosebud resident, is taking old wood and building small pieces of furniture and serving trays and doing the
whole repurposed-wood, Friesen said.
I anticipate to always be growing and changing and bringing in different artists, he said. My goal is that its not the
same store when you visit it once.
While opening Kith and Kin, Friesen continues acting in
films and commercials, and performing music. Next month,
hell go on tour with the Wheatland Band. Hes also just created his second music album, and is planning to celebrate its
release in Kith and Kin in January. Kaitlyn Sloboda, a Rosebud School of the Arts student, has written a play based on
Friesens music, and will perform it as her Final Project in
February.
Kith and Kin Artisan Wares is on the northwest corner of
the four-way-stop in Rosebud, across from the HaskayneKenney Mercantile. Friesen invites guests to Kith and Kins
grand opening wine and cheese, Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 8
p.m.

A young boy hears that theres a dragon up in

the cave, up in the hills, Ertman said. When he
goes to find the dragon, the terrified villagers follow him, but the dragon is actually a poet and a
peacemaker,
Ertman said. St. George comes for a fake battle
to slay the dragon and calm the villagers, and then
they all go down to the village
for Christmas dinner but the
dragon comes too.
The third fable, set in a
monastery, is based on a 13th
century story. Brother Heinrichs, a musical monk, has a
donkey who likes to sing in
the choir. But when the archbishop is scheduled to visit,
the donkey is banned, and
the monks insist they get new
music, which is eventually
provided by an angel choir
and Brother Heinrichs donkey.
They do it for the archbishop and the archbishop
is amazed, Ertman said. All
these animals wind up singing the story of Jesus coming
to earth, and so it lands at the
cradle, at the crche.
Its extraordinarily beautiful -- and silly. This
will actually deliver the feeling everybodys looking for at Christmas time. You want to laugh. You
want to feel light and full of life. And you want to
feel really, really deeply. And thats what this show
is going to offer people.

look to teamwork
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Despite the loss of some of last years athletes, the Strathmore Silver Sharks swim club
is experiencing higher numbers of participants than ever before.
However, there are many swim club members eager to fill the shoes of previous senior
athletes, and step up to the diving board and
show the new athletes coming on board the
ropes.
I think the kids are really excited, said head
coach Jennifer Mertz. We had to get pumped
and excited for this year knowing that we had
lost some of our senior kids. But these kids
have just stepped right up and stepped right
into those shoes and own those places at the
top. Weve had a big shuffle this year, the year
before we had four kids leave the club, last
year we had 30 but weve replaced all of those
kids and were at some of our higher numbers
yet.
The swim club now has 98 members, with
nine registered in the Minnows program and
still three spots available.
Mertz added that all the swimmers being replaced this year boded well for coaches as it
allowed them to bump one lane worth of kids
into the next group.
The swim club had the privilege of having a
contingent of the University of Calgary Dinos

swim team come out last Saturday and help

the swimmers improve on their skills. Mertz
stated a camp like this is beneficial in opening doors for swimmers to build confidence in
moving to the next level if they so desire to.
Theyre ready to step up, said Mertz.
Theyre already starting to look forward to
the next pieces. And camps like this are amazing opportunities for our kids to see if theyre
worthy of that level of swimming, if they want
it bad enough. We only train five times a week
but if you come to all of those five practices,
we can get you ready for university swimming.
Mertzs goal is to get the kids to achieve
whatever level they desire.
Our goal is always to bring up their technique, she said. Every year, us as coaches,
set a team goal for technical pieces of their
strokes. Last year we really worked on streamlines. This year were continuing with the
streamlines and focusing on walls, making
sure that our whole team is on the same page
with that.
She added that the club needs more of a fun
component to the season to create positive energy surrounding the team.
The team participated in the Canmore Pentathlon on Oct. 24. Madison Laycraft received
second place in her age group, Boris Kuljanin
got third in his age group and Marina Laycraft
was second in her age group.

Come Cheer on Your Strathmore Wheatland Kings!

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

After going 0-3 last weekend against some tough opponents,
the Wheatland Kings went through a difficult stretch of games.
However, the team remains positive and is working hard to get
through their recent slump.
The environment of the team is absolutely excellent, said
head coach Emilio Fuoco. I know that they had three tough
games. Our result should have been better if we wouldve played
60 minutes every game. Weve had a lot of building and growing, lots of positives to come out of the weekend even though
there was no points earned.
For the last few weekends, the Kings faced a challenging
schedule that had them playing games straight from Friday to
Sunday. As a result the team was left exhausted when Sunday
rolled around.
(On Sunday), we probably played one of our better games all
year, said Fuoco.
There are no more excuses and no more crutches. We just
had to play 60 minutes, thats really been our downfall in the
last few games. Same thing against Mountainview, Airdrie, and
the game in the Hat. If we play 60 minutes the way that were
encouraging them to play, were going to have a tremendous
amount of success.
Additionally, Fouco knows more players have to be on board
for a full game effort but at the same time feels there is a consistent effort coming forth.
We need certain players to compete shift in, shift out, he
said. Thats the whole problem of the situation is if we have
one or two passengers, a team like ours isnt going to see a lot
of success. We need to have 20 players come prepared to play.
I think after this weekend weve taken a big jump forward. Im
looking for some positive things to come.
Fuoco said team discipline has been exceptional and there
will always be situations where youre going to lose an opportunity or somebody makes a mistake.
In the 5-4 loss to Medicine Hat on Oct. 23, Jacen Bracko, Cole
Busslinger, Lucas Jones and Blake Bishop scored one each.
Bishop, Bracko, Tyler Rivest and Hayden Vanderploeg scored
in the 7-4 defeat on home ice to Mountainview the next night.
On Sunday afternoon, Bracko, Rivest, Jones and Brendan
Moore scored in the loss to Airdrie.
The Kings will get a well deserved break before they take to
the ice again in High River on Nov. 6 at 8:15 p.m. before hosting Airdrie on Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. and Coaldale on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.

Senior Hawks show energy

JUSTIN SEWARD
Time Reporter

Both Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks
senior boys and girls volleyball teams
showed tremendous competitiveness
last weekend in their home tournaments, providing both coaches with
optimism towards the rest of the season.
The senior girls placed fifth, but
that was no indication of how well
the team played defensively.
We played with lots of energy and
were competitive in all our matches,
said girls head coach Josh Jalbert.
We had been working on our defensive game the past few weeks and
we saw that work come through this
weekend. The girls played in better
defensive position and were willing
to hit the floor to keep the rally going.

He did pinpoint a couple of weaknesses that can be worked on down

the stretch of the season, including
finishing their attacks and consistent
serving.
Senior boys coach John Reinhart
was satisfied with his teams third
overall finish, considering they lost
in their semi-final by two points, but
nonetheless saw a lot of upside on
the weekend.
The boys played very well this
weekend, said Reinhart. With the
exception of one game, we lost games
by less than four points. We played a
lot of pressure packed games, which
hopefully will help in the future
when we play close games.
Overall, he said, the hitting, passing and defense was the best it has
been all season, which he hopes they
can sustain into the South Central
Zone tournament.

The Holly Cross Collegiate Hawks senior boys volleyball placed third in their home tournament on Oct.
23-24.

Bisons get
Cowtown split
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The CFR Bisons would like to throw
out their performance against the Calgary Buffaloes last Saturday night as
they seemed to have been caught flatfooted all game long, and it showed in
a 4-2 defeat by their archrival.
First-year forward Matt Halkovic
thought they had the potential to pace
themselves with the Buffs but unfortunately the game plan was not executed
well enough.
We flat-out didnt compete, and they
out worked us, said Halkovic. Thats
what it basically comes down to in every game. You just need to work hard to
win these games and we just didnt do
it against the Buffs.
He added that getting out of their
own zone was an issue and turning
the puck over lots in the neutral zone
prevented them from getting any pressured attacks going.
We tried to adjust, said Halkovic.
We were not working hard enough in
our own zone to get the puck out and
in the neutral zone we werent skating
hard enough. I didnt think any of us
adjusted until the last 10 minutes of the
game but at that point it was too late.
Kyle Gordon and Cameron Shorrock
scored in the loss.
It was a much different story on Sunday afternoon against the Calgary Royals to earn the split with a 3-1 win and a
game where the effort was much better.
We worked a lot harder on getting
the puck out of our zone, turning over
the pucks less and getting pucks on
net, he said. Obviously our first line
with Kyle Gordon and Gary Haden,
theyre always capitalizing on their
chances and that was the case (on Sunday).
He thought that going into the first intermission either tied or ahead set them
up nicely for the rest of the contest.
It was Gordon with two and Shorrock
with one in the win.
The Bisons will have a pair of home
games this weekend when they host
Grande Prairie on Halloween at 5:15
p.m., and then the Fort Saskatchewan
Rangers will be in town on Nov. 1 at
2 p.m.

Nwoye grateful
for opportunity
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Transitioning
from
one sport to another
can prove difficult for
many athletes, but for
2013 Holy Cross Collegiate graduate Charles
Nwoye, having made
such a change led him
to great success, now
playing in his first year
football at the University of British Columbia
(UBC).
After moving from Nigeria to Edmonton prior to Grade 6, Nwoye
settled in Strathmore
with his family a year
later and took interest
in basketball. With the
help of his coach, he
developed into a skilled
player that eventually
received attention from
various universities.
He had hoped to be
heavily scouted, but after Grade 12 his passion
was not there anymore.
Grade 7, 8 and 9
Id say wasnt my best
years in basketball,
recalls Nwoye. My
coach Mr. Annicchiarico in Grade 9, he just
took my game, really
brought the best out of
me as a basketball player. By the time I was
in Grade 12, I was the
probably the best Id
ever imagine I would

ever be. Through that I

thought I was going to
play at a university and
one university recruited
me. I just thought you
know what, it wasnt really worth it anymore.
Then his sports aspirations took a turn for
the best last summer.
He was home from
the University of Lethbridge and attending
his brothers track meet
where he ran into a
friend of his.
I was just home for
the summer, just finishing second year,
he said. I went there
to support him at his
zones, which he came
first in high jump in,
and a CIS player, whos
going into the CFL draft
this year, he knew my
coach, coach Nill at
UBC and he told me
youve got the size
and very athletic, you
should give football a
try.
With encouragement
from his friends, Nwoye
met with Nill and accepted the offer to play
for the UBC Thunderbirds.
We kind of figured
that going to UBC
would be my best interest because its one
of the best school in
Canada academically,
said Nwoye. I was re-

ally ready to learn the

sport. Its something I
wished I played but I
never got the chance to
in high school.
He added the biggest
difference he had to get
used to was the pace of
the game and learning
the ropes in training
camp.
The game is a lot
faster, he said. Especially for someone coming in who has never
played football before.
The first couple weeks
of training camp were
pretty rough. I didnt
have an idea of what
I was doing. But now
I know a lot better of
what to do. Its still a
work in progress.
His best memory in
his brief career so far
has been registering his
first tackle a couple of
weeks ago against the
University of Alberta.
Nill was impressed
with Nwoyes maturity
level which solidified
his decision on giving
the 19-year-old the opportunity.

Hes an above average athlete, said Nill.

And after sitting down
and talking with him, I
realized he has above
average maturity. Hes
a good decision maker.
So hes definitely someone who if he desires
could make a difference
in learning this game.
While he knew itd
require a lot of work to
get Nwoye up to speed
in physicality, cognitive
development and the
techniques of the game,
the Strathmore local
has already has made
an impression on the
team.
I didnt think hed
play for a couple of
years, said Nill. And
he had to play this year.
But thats more of an
indication of our lack
of depth here in this
young program than it
is on Charless ability.
What it does give him
is an unbelievable opportunity thats hes actually getting more reps
than he normally would
in a normal situation.

Braves handed first defeat

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Braves team faced their strongest opponent in the Lethbridge Hurricanes White
last Saturday, said assistant coach Lane Wagner,
who didnt mind his team getting exposed to adversity this early on in the season.
I guess it was our first sign of adversity, said
the local double-A assistant coach. Their team
wanted it more. It was good we seen it earlier

rather than later anyway. We havent really seen

anyone as good as them yet. It was a little different pace of game for sure.
Wagner added their game had to be simplified
in areas such as getting pucks out and deep in the
offensive zone, while forechecking harder, for a
chance to win the game.
Moving forward, he said, they have to play harder in all 60 minutes and win the little battles of
the game.

Braves take split in weekend games

Continued from Page 20
Trevor Gillis led the way with
two goals, while Tegan Skehar,
Zach Nicholls, Avery Hansen
and Tristan Zandee each scored
one in the loss.
It wasnt all bad news for the
Braves, as they had opened up
the weekend with a 12-3 win
over the Foothills Bisons on Oct.
23. Wagner was pleased to see
the offense shared amongst the
players.
It was good, we were getting
some secondary scoring which
was nice to see, said Wagner.
It was nice to see not just one
player putting up all the points.
Zandee led the charge with
four goals, followed by Joel
Romano with a hat trick, while
Hansen, Gillis, Philip Raycroft,
Nolan Mahussier and Kegan
Law notched one goal each in
the win.

The local peewee double-A

team will be in Lethbridge to
face the Hurricanes Red on Nov.
1 at 2:45 p.m.
CHIEFS HURT
Meanwhile, the injury-riddled
Wheatland Chiefs managed to
get by the NWCAA Bruins of
Calgary on Saturday afternoon
by a 4-2 score.
Head coach Shadoe Stoodley thought what gave them a
chance to pull through in this
game was their discipline and
capitalizing on special teams.
That was a big part, our discipline was good, he said. We
got some calls against but thats
hockey. Its going to happen.
They stayed out of that stuff and
that gave us a chance to score.
We had two power play goals so
that helps.
With key players Jason Hobson and Alex Biletsky on the
shelf for the foreseeable future,

Stoodley said getting goals by

other players when they need
them will help them get farther
in games.
Ryan Skytt scored two, while
Kody Hammond and Mitchell
Fawcett scored one each in the
win.
The local double-A midget
team will have two home games
this weekend when they host
the CRAA Blue at 7:30 p.m. on
Oct. 30 and the Okotoks Oilers
Green on Nov. 1 at 5 p.m.
WARRIORS FALTER
The Wheatland Warriors saw
a 2-1 lead slip from their grasp
and settled for a 3-3 tie with
Red Deer Ramada on Oct. 25 at
home.
Brandon Kasdorf, Max Kathol
and Cole Berg scored for the local double-A bantam team.
The Warriors will be in Hussar
to play host to the Medicine Hat
Hounds on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

The
Wheatland
Braves got scoring by committee
on route to a 12-3
win over the Foothills Bisons at the
Strathmore Family
Centre on Oct. 23.

The
Wheatland
Warriors tied Red
Deer Ramada 3-3
at the Strathmore
Family Centre on
Oct. 25.

The
Wheatland
Chiefs
worked
hard and the results showed in a
4-2 win over the
NWCAA
Bruins
on Oct. 24 at the

Centre.

Kings
for hire
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The 20 players on the Wheatland
Kings roster are giving back to the
community, when they will be volunteering their time to help out local businesses and residents who hire them to
perform jobs around their homes or
offices on Nov. 7 as a part of Hire a
Wheatland King Day.
The community supports the team,
so they need to support the community, said Kings Events coordinator Michelle Bishop. Just letting them know
the Kings are back and theyre trying to
rebuild their reputation.
Bishop said this was a good way for
team building and for the players to
get out in the community to volunteer,
which is good to have on their resumes.
Some duties could include: yard clean
up (raking leaves or snow removal), errands, hanging Christmas lights, window washing, walk a dog, wash/clean
your car and help haul garbage. Safety
will be considered with each job.
In return, the Kings will accept a cash
donation or a donation to the Strathmore Food Bank.
A Wheatland King can be hired on
Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
If you are interested, you can contact
Bishop by e-mail (mbishop6@telus.net)
or phone at 403-901-8713.

Senior Badgers
season concludes
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Badgers senior football teams season came to an end at the
hands of Innisfail in a 46-6 defeat on
Saturday, but head coach Brad Middlemiss shed some light on an overall successful campaign.
Id say our season overall from
where we started with the brand new
nine-man program was a success, said
Middlemiss.
We came in fourth. The boys really
worked hard. I had a lot of new players
and we progressively got better all the
way through.
The team started out with 12 players
and grew to 23 over the course of the
season, and being a nine-man league
there were adjustments that had to be
made.
Moving from 12-man to nine-man,
some of the things that we thought
would work in a 12-man system did not
work in the nine, said Middlemiss.
As coaches we were learning along
with the kids as we went through. I
think that also helped with how we got
better.
Middlemisss added that he is getting
them into more of a training regime this
offseason, which will get them better
prepared for next year.
Meanwhile the peewees kick off their
postseason against Olds on Oct. 31 at
noon, followed by the bantams who
will battle Red Deer later the same day
at 2:30 p.m., with both games being
played in Strathmore.

in accounting within the steel industry until she
settled on a nursing career. She was a dedicated,
caring nurse with a successful career with Alberta
Health Services. Since moving to Strathmore in
1984, Mona enjoyed life on the ranch, surrounded
by animals. She was generous to a fault with her
time, resources and love. Since retirement Mona
focused her time and energy on helping others.
Donations in Monas name can be made directly to
the Alberta Childrens Hospital Foundation (2888
Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, T3B 6A9) or the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation (#200, 119-14
St. N.W., Calgary, T2N 1Z6). A funeral service was
held on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Lord of All
Lutheran Church (112 Lakeside Blvd, Strathmore)
at 10:30 a.m. with interment to follow at Craigmyle Cemetery. To send condolences, please visit

Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
