VALLEY SOCIAL CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR

NOVEMBER 2015

Vol 55/Issue 10

FROM PRESIDENT JULIANNE M.

Happy holidays to everyone ! Im already getting frantic thinking about all
the things I have to do over the next two months. First, I am so proud
about our newest award from the Keep The Promise on October 29,2015
in Bloomfield! We are all so happy. We waited a long time to win this and
it feels so good! Next the Anniversary & Halloween party was great. We
had OPTIONS and Fellowship join us on October 29th, that made things
even more fun. In a few weeks we will have our Thanksgiving
Dinner at Christ Church in Ansonia on November 25th, which
is always one our best events of the year. I hope everyone can
come to celebrate Fall with us!

VALLEY MEMBERS AND FELLOWSHIP STAR IN THEIR OWN

FASHION SHOW AT FELLOWSHIP PLACE!
Twelve members of the VSC participated in the Annual Fashion Show between the
two clubs in New Haven on October 19, 2015. A dinner, show, and dance were the
main attraction for this yearly event. The members from both clubs chose their
own clothes to wear and wrote up how they wanted to be announced down the
catwalk. Everyone had so much fun and boy did they all look
fantastic. Everyone said they can not wait to do this next year!
This is always such a great time for members and staff. John W.
from Fellowship and Phyllis our Club Supervisor were the MCs
doing all the announcing. Phyllis then played all types of music
that everyone could dance too. We thank Julianne for driving us all home after
because we were all pooped out afterwards.

THE VALLEY SOCIAL CLUB CALENDARS ARE READY FOR 2016

The Valley Social Club calendars are now available for anyone who wants to support the art project at the club. The calendars display a variety of art work made

each week over the past year. Your donation of $5.00 will be used to supply the
artists for next years projects. Please contact Jacques Maignan at 203-736-2601,
ext. 1163.

note, we dont do the work for you. We are here to teach skills and
increase independence through support.

ANOTHER FUN OCTOBER BY JULIANNE M

The month of October is always a fun one here at the
club. First we had our trip to Jones tree farm. Everyone
got their pumpkins and a hayride on a sunny fall
afternoon. I also got decorations for the club. Then we
had our Halloween/anniversary party up at the Ansonia
Armory. As usual we had big a crowd, unusual costumes
and great food. We got to catch up with the OPTIONS and
New Haven clubs, danced and had a scary good time.

OPPORTUNITIES AT THE CLUB

DO YOU WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE OR IMPROVE YOUR READING
SKILLS?
Opportunities abound here at the club for motivated individuals and here is
why! We have a reading program from Literacy Volunteers. They are here to
help you improve your skills. How does it work? First you sign up with Phyllis
at the club. Then the head of Literacy Volunteers makes an appointment with
you to do a small interview with you to see what level you read at. Then you are
assigned a tutor and meetings times are scheduled that work into your
schedule each week. So if you think you need reading assistance call today at
203-305-7895 and this is for anyone that is a BHcare client.
They are Back!!!
The South Central Behavioral Health Grants are back! We have not had the
opportunity to do this in many years. We had members achieve wonderful
things like holding a workshop on schizophrenia that educated the public and
members families. We had one member write a grant to make baby blankets for
new born babies at Griffin Hospital. Members have written grants to do peer
run groups to teach various skills like crochet, knitting, taking educational trips
or doing a fitness class at a local gym. Maybe you always wanted to start your
own business but never thought you could, well the seed money they give might
just be what gets you going! If you would like to do a grant they must be in your
own hand writing. No one else can write it for you. This is open to all clients at
BHcare. See club staff for grant forms and assistance. Dead Line is November
10, 2015. Grants are chosen by South Central's own Grant Committee. Good
Luck!

BRANFORD HALLOWEEN PARTY BY JOHN L.
Valley Social Club recently attended a Halloween Party at Options in Branford
on October 21, 2015. We had wonderful snacks and hors doeuvres . Then we
had chicken and potatoes dinner which was delish! The weather was warm
which made wearing a costume very hot. Two of their members won first and
second but Shawn M. won third place. We would like to thank the staff and club
members for a fun time. We are glad we were invited to their place! We look
forward to all the upcoming parties with them in the future!
