m pretty handy around the house. Ill swap out the sump pump in the
basement. I have a table saw and use it to build birdhouses, simple furniture and the like. In the garage I perform minor maintenance on my
vehicles, like oil changes, installing a new starter motor, etc.
But while I consider myself a handyman, I hope Im smart enough to
know when to leave a home improvement or maintenance project to the
professionals. One of those jobs would be inspecting the septic system.
Like me, you probably scratch your head and wonder why in the world a
homeowner would think to undertake a septic inspection or repair. We know
its dirty and unpleasant work. We know it can be dangerous duty working
around electricity and water, as well as dealing with toxic fumes. We know it
can take years of experience to effectively diagnose a failing septic system.
INVITATION TO DISASTER
Despite the many impediments, we still hear about an occasional do-ityourselfer who gets in over his head (literally) trying to repair a septic system
and needs to be bailed out (again, literally) by his friendly neighborhood
pumping professional.
At the same time, the home handyman is also being encouraged to take
inspections into his own hands by folks who ought to know better, some
state and county health department officials.
The trend from health departments for some time has been to combat
the threat of groundwater pollution by requiring homeowners to adhere to
mandatory periodic septic system inspections. This is wise and prudent. Every pumper I know can tell horror stories about encountering septic tanks
that havent been maintained in 20, 30 or even more years. Its high time that
routine maintenance is required for septic systems in every corner of this
great land.
But to temper the outrage some homeowners may feel over paying for
septic pumping, some governments are choosing to let folks be in charge of
inspecting their own systems and reporting the condition. Hmm, where can
that plan go haywire?
LUCKY TO BE ALIVE
Ripped from the headlines, lets look at a recent story out of Plympton, Massachusetts, involving a man rescued from his septic tank after he
fell in while attempting to make his own repair. According to several news
accounts, the man was screaming for help while standing inside his tank,
waist-deep in septage.
He had been doing a small repair on his own. He was one of the people
who lived in the residence, said local fire chief, Warren Borsari, whose technical rescue team saved the man. He was standing on a stepladder inside of

And it didnt take Pelster long to figure out he could capitalize on his
experience and opportunities within the company he worked for, Missouri
Valley Petroleum (MVP).
CoNNeCTiNG THe DoTS
The business opportunity started like this: Pelster needed his homes
septic tank pumped, and it took several days before businesses he called got
back to him. Something clicked in his brain. Most pumpers are owner/operator businesses and they were having a hard time keeping up with demand.
I recognized there was a need for professional services someone who
would call people back, he says.
Pelster was working for MVP, managing a propane division, and ran his
business evenings and weekends. He learned as much about septic service
as he could from a friend with a pumping business in western North Dakota
and bought his first truck, a 1994 International.
Pelster picked up customers with cold calls and offered a coupon along
with other businesses as part of a direct mailing that targeted local homeowners. For his next marketing promotion, Pelster approached his supervisor and one of the MVP owners, asking to insert an informational note and
$25-off coupon with the 1,200 billing invoices MVP sends out every month.
That gave customers faith in me because they knew and trusted MVP,
which has been in business since 1946, Pelster says.
Business boomed. Pelster was putting in 80-hour weeks between his
job and his business. The long hours took a toll on his personal life. To find
balance, he approached MVP Vice President Jim Froelich about partnering
with MVP.
The pairing made sense. People who need propane bottles filled typically also have septic systems that need to be maintained. MVP has human
resources and accounting staff to take care of office and paperwork.
We approached it from the standpoint that MVP could offer the broader depth and management as well as the resources he needed to grow, Froelich says.
Once we joined with MVP (November 2013), the septic business went
crazy, Pelster says. A year later Big Muddy had 10 times the business it had

Mitch Bitz filled in the last connected service portable sanitation in
2013. He also had a relationship with MVP the company had supplied fuel
for his convenience store until he sold it. It wasnt long after Bitz founded

As partners with a large operator,
Pelster and Bitz have access to additional capital to add and upgrade their equipment.
Bitz owned a 2007 Ford F-450 with a 2012 Progress Tank slide-in unit
with a 540-gallon waste/260-gallon freshwater aluminum tank and Conde
pump (Westmoor Ltd.). With a liftgate, he could haul up to four portable restrooms as well. When he joined the partnership, Bitz had 60 PolyPortables
Integra restrooms. Today he has 180 restrooms from PolyPortables and two
PolyPortables Tag-Along hand-wash stations. The company uses PolyPortables chemical products.

says, despite 795,000 miles on the odometer. But its 1,800-gallon steel tank
isnt as efficient for long hauls as the newer trucks with bigger tanks. A 2008
Mack has a 5,000-gallon Imperial Industries steel tank and Jurop/Chandler
pump. It is the main truck for septic service and is also used for pumping at
oilfield worker camps, RVs at campgrounds and grease traps.
A 2006 Sterling with a Keith Huber 3,300-gallon hazardous material
tank has a full-opening rear door and a two-stage hoist. It works well for
pumping car wash and shop pits.
Another equipment investment important for endurance in rugged
North Dakota is the 100 percent rubber hose from VARCo that is on all the
trucks, Pelster says. Also, the company markets Bio-Tab septic additive from
Century Chemical Corp. to customers.
Grease duty
Pumping grease is a lucrative part of the business at the Mandan, North
Dakota-based company Big Muddy Septic Service, says founder Kirt Pelster.
Restaurants and other businesses throughout central and southwest North
Dakota often have a hard time finding pumpers.
The downside is the smell is horrible, Pelster says, and business owners
dont like pumpers to show up during regular hours. We coordinate with the
business to service their location at a suitable time for them.
Because of Bismarck, North Dakotas FOG (fats, oil and grease) program,
many businesses are on a regular schedule once a month for a chain
of grocery stores, every two months for fast-food restaurants, for example.
Timing is based on crust and sludge level reports required by the state.
Pumping grease is also growing in western North Dakota, because service
businesses there have taken on more oilfield work. Every new business that
opens in the region presents a potential new customer for Pelster. He notes
that he is fortunate to work in a region that still has ample capacity and
reasonable rates for grease disposal. But Pelster and Mitch Bitz, owner of
portable sanitation company Spot-A-Pot, take nothing for granted and work
closely with treatment plant and landfill operators.
The relationship with Bismarck is based on trust, Bitz says. So we
wont bring in the wrong material, and we also do some work for the City of
Bismarck.
eMPloYee relATioNS
Under the joint venture, Pelster and Bitz also gained help with the hiring of two employees. They receive the same health and retirement benefits
as MVPs 200 employees and participate in MVPs monthly safety
meetings.
The relationship with their
two employees is good, Pelster
says, because he and Bitz have
both done the work, and still do it
on occasion. Weve never asked
them to do something we wouldnt
do ourselves, Pelster says.
At the same time, the drivers
are held to quality standards to act
professionally and to spend time
with customers and educate them
about their septic systems. Drivers take care of the trucks as if they were their
own. The men are cross-trained to pump tanks and take care of the portable
restroom side of the business.
Employees also receive bonuses as an incentive for selling MVP services or products to new customers. Pelster manages Big Muddy along with
his new role at MVP in sales, coordinating combination sales of all the companys services.
We can help new homeowners get a septic tank put in, provide temporary heat and portable restrooms during construction, and propane to heat
the house, Pelster says.
Bitz markets and coordinates the

Pelster anticipates Big Muddy will
be running six trucks within a few years.
Kirt Pelster Bitz expects Spot-A-Pot will grow to offer 500 restrooms and run six trucks
with four or five employees. The projections are due to growth in the communities they serve and a couple small competitors having gone out of business.
The health department is cracking down on land application with
more regulations and paperwork, and its getting harder to be a one-person
owner/operator, Pelster says.
Big Muddy and Spot-A-Pot take septage and portable sanitation waste
to the Bismarck waste treatment plant and do some work for the city. The
pumpers have 24-hour access to the plant, and rates are reasonable com(continued)

Bio-Tab !
What is Bio-Tab?
Bio-Tab is a highly concentrated tablet of bacteria (both aerobic and
anaerobic) and enzymes that acts as a biological activator for septic tanks.
In short, Bio-Tab helps septic systems work like they were intended.
Unlike most competitors dusty powders or messy liquids, Bio-Tab is in a
tablet form. Easy to use and easy to store, Bio-Tab is highly concentrated
(one jar contains a years supply). It is a safe, non-toxic, non-corrosive and
non-poisonous product that will not harm plumbing or septic systems.

Vermont
Eight of 13 people filling new water-quality positions in the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation come from the program that regulates onsite wastewater. Commissioner David Mears says the push for water
quality has led to cuts elsewhere in his department, so the department will
rely more on contractors and system installers to make sure systems are operating correctly. He says the larger need is dealing with polluted stormwater
runoff, but added that there are no easy choices when resources are tight.
Idaho
The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is considering proposed changes to onsite wastewater regulations after a month-long public
comment period. DEQ says revisions to the Technical Guidance Manual for
Individual and Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems will address engineering
requirements for public systems, in-trench sand filters, using the method of
72 to determine effective soil depths, capping fill systems, at-grade soil absorption systems, gravelless system products and a revision to the installer
register permit rule. The proposed changes are available at DEQs website,
www.deq.idaho.gov.
Minnesota
Legislative action in Minnesota is resulting in changes to regulations
affecting onsite wastewater professionals. Those who fail to meet continuing education requirements will now be able to apply for a one-year extension from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. During that conditional
extension period, they will be able to make up any missed training and retake up to two exams. The Legislature defined building sanitation systems
connected to septic systems as both plumbing and septic components, and
changed the bonding requirements for onsite professionals to match those
of the plumbing program. The changes are designed to streamline the license application and renewal process and create flexibility for onsite professionals. MPCA will be issuing specific instructions and fact sheets on the
changes in the future.
Missouri
A property developer has been sued by the Missouri attorney general
for selling lots he said had approved onsite septic systems when they did not.
The suit filed last summer accuses the developer of installing holding tanks
rather than operating wastewater treatment systems in violation of state
water and consumer protection laws, and then charging people to have the
holding tanks pumped. People who bought lots from the developer had to
pay to have approved septic systems installed. The lawsuit seeks restitution
for the homeowners and an order prohibiting future sales of lots in the
subdivision.

Despite the lingering use of cesspools, Sliney says todays systems are
being engineered far better than in the past. The components and technologies available to installers do a good job of treating waste and preventing
sediments from reaching the drainfield. The advances are great for the installing industry and the customer, he says.
Compared to 30 years ago, systems are much better designed today,
Sliney says. Soil scientists determine high water tables. Two-compartment
septic tanks and filters ensure cleaner effluent. Watertight lids prevent infiltration, and use of lids and risers bring access to the ground level and promote better tank maintenance.
Sliney holds a Class I Designers License with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, which authorizes him to design repairs or improvements to existing onsite wastewater treatment systems with
a flow of less than or equal to 900 gpd. However, it doesnt allow him to design systems for new construction.
Youve not only got to earn education credits needed to design for repair systems, you also need to maintain that classification with additional
annual education credits, says Sliney. I can handle the eight annual educational credits required to maintain my Class I, but anything higher is too
time-consuming to make business sense for us. Were already way too busy
on repairs and building systems for clients according to designs were given.

Slineys construction business complements his septic work for new
building projects. Crews already on the work site to install a septic system
can also clear lots, dig foundations and complete most construction-related
site work, including installing drain, water and electrical service lines. Owning the equipment also allows him
to bid on installing larger commercial septic systems.
The companys construction garage houses three
excavators, a 1997 Kobelco SK200, a 2007 Hitachi Zaxis 135 and a 2012 Takeuchi mini; a 1998 Komatsu D31
dozer; a 2003 John Deere 310 backhoe; a 2008 Volvo L70E front-end loader; and a 2003 10-wheel MAC dump
trailer.
RISS also cleans grease traps, largely for fast-food
chains in the area. Again, RISS crews are often required
to perform additional work to satisfy local regulations.
In some towns we have to do paperwork each time we
do a job, so the restaurants can prove to the town that
theyre keeping up with maintenance, says Sliney.
Winter is the toughest season for the business, cutting into both septic and construction work. When the ground freezes and the snow piles up

Trace amounts of chemicals the byproduct of prescription medicine usage can linger in onsite systems.
Septic service best practices can help solve this groundwater issue. By Jim Anderson, Ph.D.
QUESTION: How well do our systems treat pharmaceuticals and other
contaminants?
ANSWER: I hear this question often during workshops, and it will be
a continuing issue of concern for the industry. Pharmaceuticals are regarded as contaminants of emerging concern from both an environmental
and human health perspective. Research has been limited on these compounds due to their trace levels in the low parts per billion. Treatment for
the compounds in wastewater treatment plants is very costly even though
there are available technologies such as ozonation, reverse osmosis and
process optimization.
Each compound is an entity with a particular organic structure, which
means it is almost impossible to generalize levels of treatment or how long
they exist in our particular environments. Recently a number of studies were
commissioned to look at these contaminants in wastewater treatment plants
because these compounds have been found in surface water and in fish below the outfalls from the plants. So there is a continuing environmental and
health concern over the effects of long-term low-level contamination. I expect we will see continuing reports on the results of various studies and, in
particular, some specifically looking at our onsite treatment systems.
I have seen a few studies that may give us a clue to the treatment effectiveness within our soil-based treatment systems. First was a study of sand
filters and constructed wetlands (both technologies used in decentralized
systems). For ibuprofen and some other organic pharmaceuticals studied,
a drain and fill operation of the subsurface wetlands significantly enhanced
the elimination of the compounds over the continuous flow operation. This
increase in treatment was attributed to allowing oxygen into the system,
which stimulated biological activity and led to the breakdown and dissipation of the compounds. The study also noted that the presence of higher
aquatic plants also enhanced the treatment of the compounds.
Another study looked at land application of biosolids in eastern Colorado. Here they found that some of the compounds dissipated after six months
from the time of application, while others persisted longer than 18 months
and some moved downward in the soil profile even given the semiarid environment. After a year and a half, though, most detects were actually below
the minimum reporting levels for the compounds. The compounds they degrade to are not fully understood and the authors conclude further research
should be conducted on the transformations occurring, taking a closer look
at any long-term accumulation.
I also remember University of Illinois studies in the late 1980s looking

to handle that waste. Id like to say were making progress but I dont think
we are. Frankly, I dont know how you fix it.
Looking ahead, what do you see for the states onsite industry?
Roll: It depends on what happens with the housing industry. All it
would take is the housing industry rebounding and many of our problems
would go away. My hope is that our good folks can get back to work and
make a decent living.

Overheard Online
Question: some septic service companies wont snake lines, leaving the
AnsWeRs: I have picked up many new customers over the years because
they hired the cheapest company they could find to pump the tank. I got a
call later the same day from them because they were still backing up. I found
out the other pumping company had cleaned the tank using the easy cover
to get at and had not bothered even looking under the inlet cover. Many
times it was a matter of taking the inlet cover off and pushing a bar down
through the clogged inlet baffle. Sometimes I would take a garden hose, turn
it on, and run it back into the house until the clog let go.
If I could not access the pipe using a cover outside, I would often get a
job changing the access so that I could get at the pipe from outside. I used
to remove plugs in the cellar, remove toilets, or even go down through the
roof vent if possible. If you take the pipe apart in the cellar and make a mess,
the homeowner will probably never call you again. If it is only a matter of
sticking a bar through a clogged baffle and it all comes flying out, and you
do not even charge him, you will have a customer for life. I usually do not
charge for digging if I do the whole job in an hour or less. I talk a lot of people
into raising the cover or only covering it with a material like mulch. This does
a good job of marking the tank location, making it easy to access for service.
We do not dig/uncover lids for customers. Is this something most other
companies do? We have been in business for 20 years in the same area with
76
no competition. We have always asked our customers to have the tank lids
accessible (dug up, lid loosened, etc.). Other companies that (for example)
fill propane tanks, etc., expect the tank area to be accessible and ready
for the service. I am surprised that so many pumpers dig out lids. Do you
charge extra?
We always dig up lids. Pennsylvania code is that lids must be within 12
inches of grade. I will dig to 6 inches below grade. Any deeper than that and
I add a digging charge and also sell them on a riser.
The contractors who help people will always make a minimum of triple
the guy that just pumps tanks. The smart businessperson is not in the septic
pumping business. He or she is in the customer service business.
Customers are willing to pay a full service company that doesnt mind
digging the tank up. The same goes for unstopping inlet pipes. We make
as much unstopping inlet pipes as we do pumping tanks. These same
customers buy enzymes, root treatment, have friends and family they give
referrals to for people that actually help them. What it really comes down to
is what you want your business to be known for and just how much money
you want to make. If you want to make enough to get by, you can just pump
tanks. But if you would like to actually be helpful and make more money
than you could ever imagine in this business, all you have to do is whatever
it takes to solve your customers problems!
Taking care of a customers problem makes you their hero for the day! I
charge a premium and do not hide that fact. My customers know what they
are going to spend before I do anything. I am the most expensive by far
in my area I miss a lot of jobs at first because of that, but after the cheap
guys cant or wont fix their problem, I get the chance to make them my
customer forever.
We live in a very remote area, and the majority of our work is industrial
septic pumping (at mines, mills, etc.) and portable restroom rentals for
construction. Very little of our business is residential septic tank pumping.
Last summer we started handing out info packages to customers on how
to better care for their systems and most of them joked about it, refused it,
or threw it out in front of our drivers (Im serious!). The customers we tend
to deal with really just do not care. The calls we get from these people are
when the septic is already backing up in their house, despite our reminder
cards and calls.
I believe in total customer satisfaction as well; however, I want to be
paid for any additional work we do. Its disappointing as owners with a lot of
enthusiasm and pride in our business that our customers dont want to learn
about their systems or how to care for them properly. We would offer any
service possible to please our customers, but if they arent interested, were
not going to do it for free.

tanks. This will be followed by a presentation by Bob Wright and Kim Seipp
on troubleshooting systems. Frank Parker will conclude the educational
session with a discussion on inspecting drip systems.
Additional details regarding these and other WWETT Show educational
sessions can be found online at www.wwettshow.com or www.nawt.org.
Option one
Build a short story around the two photographs (found at the NAWT
website). A homeowner is meeting with the septic professional to discuss
why his system is not working properly as indicated by a floating manhole
riser. The story should explain why the system may have gotten that way and
what will need to be done.
The short story should reference websites or articles where the information
can be found. You can change or enhance the photos and be creative about
how the story is told. The story can be no more than 1,500 words.
Option two
Using the same two photographs, create a short video that could serve
as a public service announcement for homeowners on how to avoid having
this problem. A video, cartoon, etc., is acceptable. Be creative!
All applications for the scholarship must be completed by you, the
applicant, and returned, if by postal service or email, with the form to the
NAWT office.
If you have questions regarding NAWT please feel free to contact us at

pro-pump hi-Count
PRO-PUMP Hi-Count liquid live bacteria from Ecological Laboratories is a blend of microorganisms selected
for broad-spectrum application in industrial and wastewater treatment. It contains more than 30 strains of bacteria to resolve the problems that occur in grease traps.
Its designed to help rapidly break down and remove
fats, oils and greases that build up in drainlines and grease traps. Line blockages, surface solids, bottom solids and grease blocks can all be remedied, and
it can degrade long-strain fatty acids, reducing grease trap odors. The mixture
of live bacteria means regular treatment reduces trap surface solids, making
pumpouts more efficient. 800/326-7867; www.propump.com. (continued)

Grease diGester
helps keep drainline clear
Problem: The owner of a Menasha, Wisconsin, restaurant saw his system backing up
into the three-compartment sink every five weeks. The drainline would plug up and the
restaurant would close early to clean up the foul smelling mess. This resulted in a loss of
business and compromised sanitary conditions in the restaurant.
Solution: Speedy Clean Drain and Sewer
completed a thorough cleaning of the 50-gallon indoor grease trap. They installed one
Trap-Cleer dosing pump injection system
from Lenzyme/Trap-Cleer into the mainline
located under the three-compartment sink
feeding into the grease trap. Liquid TrapCleer was dosed in at 2 ounces per evening. It
is designed to keep the system flowing properly and consume much of the grease, extending the time between clean-outs and servicing.
Result: Several months later the system continued to operate normally. Only a
small amount of grease built up in the trap. The restaurant hasnt shut down and the
odors disappeared. The trap required pumping after eight months of operation. Based
on a recommendation to clean the system when the grease level reaches one-third capacity, the restaurant scheduled cleanings on a four-month interval. 800/223-3083;

The 30-yard open-top roll-off dewatering
unit from AQUA-Zyme Disposal Systems can be filled with 22,000 to 25,000
gallons of grease trap waste at 1 to 2 percent solids in about two hours. After
draining 24 hours, the unit can be picked up using a standard-capacity roll-off
truck and transported for solids disposal. Sludge volume can be reduced by 80
percent, with reductions to 98 percent in BOD, COD, FOG and TSS. Effluent is
clear. The unit has few moving parts, and filter media size can be selected according to the particulars of the job. Standard equipment includes a roll-over
tarp system; side, floor and center screens; 1/4-inch floor plate; 7-gauge side
plates; four door-binder ratchets; eight drain ports; two inlet ports; and a longhandle scraper. Units have an average life span of 12 to 14 years and are available in a 15-yard size. 979/245-5656; www.aqua-zyme.com.

Anti-theFt greASe VAult
Wastequip Anti-Theft Grease Vaults provide
safe, simple storage of used food grease. The
lids have interlocking lid plates, leaving no
edges; a shielded lock; and a heavy-duty grate.
Available in middle-dump or end-dump configurations, with drop-in box or flat grates, the lid and
grate system is standard on grease containers and can be retrofitted on most
existing grease containers. Lid assembly takes no more than 15 seconds and
requires no welding or tools. The user slides the two plates together, aligns
the holes, attaches the grate, and puts a padlock in place. Available in 100-,
208-, 294- and 360-gallon sizes, the containers have been thoroughly tested
against leakage and have a lip overhang that prevents spills. They can be easily emptied by vacuuming or dumping. 877/468-9278; www.wastequip.com.
Grease interceptors
The ESep trap grease processor from RecoverE accepts grease as-pumped from
the interceptor and separates it from water and most solids through its energyefficient, multi-stage GreaseBuster process. No additives are required, the water
and solids are returned to the customers
process, and the brown grease is recovered as a pasteurized, low-water biosolid. The fully automated and instrumented unit effectively eliminates trap
odors, and can be scaled to the customers needs, whether 1,000 gpw or
300,000 gpd. 269/271-4977; www.recovere.biz.

6-inch drain. The screen has two 3/8-inchgapped stainless steel bar screens at opposing angles, with the front screen virtually self-cleaning. It is a nonmechanical, simple way to remove large pieces
of trash, rocks and other debris from the flow stream. This unit has a 4-inch
telescoping inlet hose that moves laterally and can be easily connected to any
vacuum truck or other flow stream. The system is portable, and the 19.5 square
feet of screening area allows for continued use and is easy to rake clean to the
garbage drain tray. It can treat more than 500 gpm. Various gapped screen sizes
are available. 208/790-8770; www.screencosystems.com.

proteCt hose

SPOTLIGHT
By Ed Wodalski
The Hose Strain Relief Kit from Coxreels protects hose fittings and connections from damage when the hose is fully extended on the reel.
The Hose Strain Relief Kit extends the life of equipment by protecting your
hose from excessive localized strain, says Jerry Medley, vice president of
sales and business development for Coxreels. The kit secures the hose to the
drum reel and helps protect the hose at the fitting connection as well as the
transition from the hose reel riser to the drum.
The accessory is available for hand-crank and motorized reels with hoses
between 1/2 and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Each kit contains two clamp sizes
to accommodate various hose-wall thicknesses. Between sizes for lightweight,
soft-wall and cloth-covered hoses are available.
A slot system enables various-sized clamps to be screwed to a backer strip
on the inside of the drum.
All Coxreels drums are fully powder coated inside and out before assembly
for maximum corrosion protection, Medley says. The installation process
ensures there is no damage to the powder coat.
While not designed for smaller jetter hoses, the kit can be used for any 3/4inch O.D. hose or larger. The kit is recommended for all hand-crank and motorized reels; existing reels can be modified to accommodate the kit. 800/2697335; www.coxreels.com.
