Todd Bissell, Principal

NOVEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER

Dr. Rachel Heide, Assistant Principal

Erie Middle School Tiger Community,

Thanks to all of the parents/guardians who attended

Parent/Teacher
Conferences. Our teachers appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and get to know you
personally. We also want to thank the PTO volunteers for furnishing the staff with
delicious dinners during these nights.
On Thursday November 12th we will host the our Erie Showcase. This is an
opportunity to families to find information concerning school wide data and information on
the programming and achievement will be presented.
Our first Renaissance Assembly will be November 4th. We will recognize over 50%
of our students as making the Honor Roll (3.5-3.74 GPA) and High Honor Roll
(3.75-4.0). This shows the Erie Middle School staff has high expectations and the students
are performing at these high levels. Also being recognized will be our WEB leaders,
volleyball players, cross country runners, and our student council members. It demonstrates
that our students are involved with extra-curricular activities and athletics. Everyone should
be proud of the level of participation and pride at Erie Middle School.
There are several events happening in November. First we have boys basketball
games on the 4th and 11th at Home and we will be hosting the boys basketball tournament on
the 14th. On November 10th we will have a 6th Grade Choir concert. On the 11th there is a
7th/8th Band concert. On the 18th there is a 6th Grade Band concert. Girls basketball
registration begins the 16th. Academic Assistance is every Tuesday and Thursday after
school until 4:00. Our various clubs will meet throughout the month. We encourage all
students to participate in athletics or clubs at school. It makes their experience well
rounded.
Its hard to believe we have started the 2nd quarter. Students and staff have been
working diligently throughout this quarter to establish a great learning environment within
Erie Middle School (EMS).
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Thanks Erie Middle School for making our book fair a huge success! We earned $1,000
in Scholastic products as well as almost $2,000 to spend on books outside of
Scholastic.
The winners of the Eyeball Guessing Game were Will Khanna, 8th grade, and Grace
Stephenson, 7th grade. Both Will and Grace were only off by one on their guess; the
correct number of eyeballs was 111.
The winners of the Zombie Teacher game were Emma Jensen, 6th grade, with 11
correct; Emma Mielke, 7th grade, with all 12 names correct; and Zane Winegar, 8th
grade, with 11 correct.
We were also able to purchase books for several teachers with the money raised from
our sales of Dum-Dums.
Thanks again to everyone who visited the book fair and participated in our contests.
Watch for our next book fair coming in February!

Elective Team Solo Award

The 6th grade Elective Team Solo Award goes to Reese Bradford. Reese is a dedicated student who puts forth his best effort in his classes. He is actively engaged and is a great role model for others. Reese has demonstrated great responsibility by communicating with his teachers. He is polite, has a positive attitude and is very respectful! He has made great progress in reading this year.
Way to go, Reese!

The Elective Team Solo Award for 7th grade goes to Jack Cover. Jack is a great
leader to other students. Always helpful, polite, kind, and respectful to students and staff, Jack is an example to all who know him. Jack has a great work
ethic and always strives to do his best for himself and teammates. Mr. Wallace
misses having Jack in class, but encourages him to keep up the good work!

The 8th Grade Elective Team Solo Award goes to JD Cook. JD has been performing
very well in band class. He comes to class with a fun, positive attitude and is
always prepared. JD plays in jazz band, and is always looking for ways to be
more involved in music. In art class, JD does inspiring work, and is fun person
to be around. Teachers appreciate JDs hard work and winning personality.

All elective students and students of the month will have their picture posted on
our Student of the Month bulletin board in the Main Office. They will also enjoy
a one topping large pizza on Friday, November 20th at their designated lunch
times. Students, please stop by the Main Office to let us know what kind of pizza
you would like.

THANKSGIVING

From the Counseling Office

I dont have any homework tonight. Sound Familiar? Many middle school students say this
to their parents in hopes of spending their evening playing video games or talking on the
phone.
Recent studies have shown
as on their teachers. As a
children constantly look up
should never end especially

that childrens success in school depends as much on their parents

parent you are their most important teacher. As they grow your
to you as a role model and for guidance. Your role as a teacher
when they enter school.

Some parents have made this rule: Theres no such thing as no homework. If there truly
isnt an assignment from school, these parents create one. Some parents ask their student to
do some research on a topic of interest. Then, have him or her report back one thing they have
learned. Others ask their student to read or journal for an hour before commencing with play
time. Parents have found that when their student understands that they mean business, their
student often remembers that he or she does have some homework after all.
Parent tips to help their students:
-Help your student develop goals
-Be available to aid them when they need your help
-Advise them and give them your support
-Praise your children when they have done something well
-Help them visualize success and acknowledge their progress
The counseling office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

The Erie Middle School Renaissance program will be hosting an assembly on Wednesday,
November 4th to acknowledge our students achievements. We look forward to the opportunity to honor our student body academic and athletic accomplishments.

~ National History Day Information ~
2015/16 Theme: Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange
NHD Website: http://www.nhd.org/

National History Day Overview - Each year more than half a million students just like you
participate. You will choose a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary
and secondary research. You will look through libraries, archives and museums, conduct oral history
interviews, and visit historic sites. After you have analyzed and interpreted your sources, and have
drawn a conclusion about the significance of your topic, you will then be able to present your work in
one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website.

A need in the Health Office:

Would you consider donating some mini bottles of water? It is handy to have 8 oz bottles of water to
give to students as needed.
News: If you havent already heard, we have an additional health clerk!
Sanchez to the support staff of Erie Middle School.

Please welcome Felicia

Our hours are as follows:

8:30 1:00

Nicole Meadows

12:00 3:00 Felicia Sanchez

As we enter the cold / flu season: If your student is feeling under the weather and their
temperature is over 100.0 degrees, please keep them home. If a student has a temperature over
100.0 degrees at school, we will call to have someone come pick them up. Please keep them home
until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication.
Just a reminder: When students are feeling ill or are injured, we'd like for them to stop by the
Health Office before texting or calling to go home. Thank you for passing this onto your students.
Immunizations: We are continuing to collect updated immunization forms. 6th graders are
required per the state of Colorado to receive the Tdap vaccination. A non-compliant report will be run
soon and non-compliant letters will be sent home. Meaning, if your student is missing any
immunizations, we will let you know via mail. If needed please schedule an appointment with your
health care provider to receive the needed immunizations.
Let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
