dont know about where youre at,

but in the south, it is HOT folks! And
with the heat comes trips to the lake
and so forth...places where youll need to be
hauling and towing things. Did you know that
towing causes a lot of wrecks on interstates
and highways?
The leading causes of trailer sway are
side wind, passing semi-trucks, driving
too fast, emergency stops, improper trailer
loading, incorrect hitch setup, undersized
tow vehicles, or a blowout, which can cause
accidents, Kim Dewsnup, RV Sales Account
Rep for Equal-i-zer said.
Check out their article on page 30 for more
information about this hot topic. And while
youre flipping through the pages, check out
the 2015 Toyota Tundra on page 10. After a
dramatic redesign for the 2014 model year
the Toyota Tundra half-ton full-size pickup
truck comes back with an encore for 2015.
The most stylish, value-driven and capable
Tundra yet gets more upgrades, including
standard V8 power across the board, a
new TRD Pro model with special off-road
suspension and an available spray-in bed
liner.
Of course, there are new products to
check out in this issue as well as car and
SUV reviews...and dont miss the industry
news section where theres always something
fun and exciting to read about. Thanks for
reading our magazine and please remember to
pass it on when youre done!

American Expedition Vehicles

American Expedition Vehicles

merican Expedition Vehicles is

unique in the aftermarket, a
company born from engineering
and still delivering equipment of exceptional
design and quality. Their products and vehicle
conversions are cutting edge representations
of what is possible if you dare to remove
every compromise from the equation.
Since the company began in 1997,
AEV has always followed a form follows
function approach to product design and
from their OE engineering principals to
their thorough product testing; AEV has
maintained an unwavering commitment to
bringing only the highest quality parts and
accessories to market. AEV firmly believes
that their products should not only look good,
but also exceed all expectations in regard to
safety, reliability and performance.
AEV specializes in manufacturing a
complete array of

W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

products to enhance the driving experience

both on and off the road. AEVs products
are very impressive but when used in
conjunction with each other, the results
are astounding. Everything has been
painstakingly designed to work in harmony,
complimenting the functionality and
increasing the capability. This level of
engineering effort and attention to detail
is truly what makes AEV stand out in the
crowd of aftermarket manufacturers.
AEV has built its reputation and
gained notoriety in the industry from their
complete line of parts, accessories and
turn-key vehicle conversions for the Jeep
JK Wrangler. AEVs product line for the
JK Wrangler includes such key components
as their Premium Front Bumper, Rear Tire
Carrier and Dual Sport Suspension Systems
which have long been heralded as some of
the highest quality, best

performing products available. AEV also has

a network of over 100 Certified Dealership
partners across the country that stock AEV
turn-key vehicle conversions such as the
JK350 Wrangler and the Brute Double Cab.
In early 2013, AEV realized that
customers in the overland travel market
were starting to gravitate toward full-size
vehicles for their increased towing and
cargo carrying capability. However, there
was a lack of well-engineered aftermarket
support for these trucks. Sure, there was
no shortage of large wheels, flashy lift kits
and big, intimidating front bumpers but not
many options that designed for overland
travel or dual-purpose applications. AEV
knew that this was an opportunity worth
pursuing and they wanted to introduce their
product design and engineering expertise to
the full-size truck market, creating a product
line designed specifically for real world
applications.
AEVs full-size vehicle platform of choice
was the 5th generation Ram due to its
loyal consumer following,
multiple powertrain
options and two
suspension

configurations. The 5th generation Ram

checked all the boxes on their wish list, so
AEVs design team immediately started
working on their all-new Ram product
line. Sticking with their No Compromise
approach to product design and engineering,
AEV set out to create a product line that
not only looked great, but also increased the
Rams capability and performance as both a
daily driver and a back country explorer.
Fast forward two years, AEV now offers
a complete turn-key vehicle conversion
package for the Ram 2500 and 3500 (aptly
named the AEV Prospector) as well as a
full product line for 2010+ Ram HD trucks
that include such notable products as their
stamped steel Premium Front Bumper,
3 DualSport Suspension System, Raised
Air Intake and a variety of different wheel
optionsand this is just the beginning.
AEV has been hard at work turning new
and exciting design concepts into a reality,
so be sure to keep an eye out for even more
products being released in the very near
future and beyond.

Toyota Tundra: The All-America Full-Size Pickup

Goes All V8 and Pro for 2015 All-V8 Lineup for 2015

fter a dramatic redesign for the

2014 model year the Toyota
Tundra half-ton full-size pickup
truck comes back with an encore for 2015.
The most stylish, value-driven and capable
Tundra yet gets more upgrades, including
standard V8 power across the board, a
new TRD Pro model with special off-road
suspension and an available spray-in bed
liner.
The brawnier, more chiseled look of the
Tundra presented an ideal platform for the
2015 TRD Pro off-road model. Youll know
it when you see it: special blackout TOYOTA
grille, TRD Pro bed panel stamping, skid
plate, matte satin black badges and black
headlight bezels. It takes an aggressive
stance on 18-inch TRD black alloy wheels

wrapped in exclusive Michelin Off-Road

Package tires, and announces its arrival with
the throaty growl of the 5.7-liter V8 with a
TRD dual exhaust system.
Beneath the brawn, the Tundra TRD Pro
is ready for any terrain with a complete TRD
suspension upgrade that raises the front of
the vehicle two inches for a level ride height
and extends wheel travel at all four corners.
The package includes larger diameter TRDtuned Bilstein High-Performance shocks
with internal hydraulic bump stops and
piggyback external reservoirs.
Available in Attitude Black, Super White
or the all-new exclusive color, Inferno, the
Tundra TRD Pro is a take-no-prisoners
kind of truck devised to embody the best of
Toyota quality, durability and reliability.

Two Engine Choices, Both Powerful V8s

Tundra customers want V8s. For 2015,
the Tundra comes standard with the 4.6-liter
i-Force V8 that doles out 310 horsepower
at 5,600 rpm and 327 lb.-ft. of peak torque
at 3,400 rpm. The most popular Tundra
engine, still one of the most capable and
advanced in the full-size pickup segment, is
the 5.7-liter i-Force V8. A real workhorse,
its also remarkably refined as it generates
381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 401 lb.-ft.
of peak torque at 3,600 rpm. The 5.7-liter
is offered in both gasoline and Flex Fuel
variants.
Both V8s feature an aluminum cylinder
block and double overhead-cam heads
with four valves per cylinder. In both,
Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing
with intelligence (VVT-i) and Acoustic
Control Induction System get credit for a
broad torque curve and helping to optimize
efficiency. Both V8s come teamed with with
a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic
transmission and rear-wheel drive, with 4WD
optional.
Stronger Than Dirt
The foundation for Tundras strength
and up to 10,500-lb. towing capacity (SAE
J2807 towing standard compliant) is its
advanced TripleTech frame. The Triple
refers to the wide, full-boxed rails for the
front portion, a reinforced C-channel under
the cab and an open C-channel beneath the
bed for strength, ride quality and durability.
The double A-arm front suspension uses coilover spring shock units, and a front-mounted
steering rack helps enhance steering feel
and response, while decreasing the overall
turning diameter.

10

W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

The rear suspension uses staggered shocks

mounted outboard of the springs to help
improve dampening efficiency. Spring rates
are tuned to provide a flat vehicle stance
when fully loaded.
The Tundra SR and SR5 grades ride
on 18-inch styled steel wheels, while the
Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition feature
20-inch alloy wheels, with a design specific
to each grade. Tundra comes with plenty
of whoa power, too, with class-leading
4-wheel disc brakes with ventilated rotors:
13.9 inches and 1.26-inches thick in front
with segment-exclusive 4-piston calipers,
and 13.6 x 0.71-inch rear rotors with 2-piston
calipers.
The Tundras Vehicle Stability Control
(VSC) system integrates traction control
(TRAC) that enhances grip on or off-road.
A built-in technology called Automatic
Limited-Slip Differential (Auto-LSD)
provides better performance in deep sand
or mud and on mixed-friction surfaces.
Compared to a conventional mechanical
limited slip differential, the Auto-LSD
system is much more responsive and has
better wear characteristics since it utilizes the
vehicles brakes to limit wheelspin.
The Tundra driver gets a definite say in
how these technologies work, via a mode
selector. In normal mode, VSC, TRAC and
Auto-LSD all function to help enable traction
and control capability. TRAC Off and AutoLSD modes activate Auto-LSD to help
extricate the Tundra from extreme conditions
by allowing full, unrestricted engine output
and transferring power to the wheel with the
most traction. The VSC Off mode turns off
all three of these systems.

Tundra 4x4 models use an on-demand,

electronically controlled four-wheel drive
system featuring a six-pinion planetary
reduction gear set to provide 4x2, 4x4 Hi and
4x4 Lo ranges. The driver selects the drive
mode using a dial on the dash. Included with
the 4WDemand part-time 4WD system is
Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), which
operates like Auto-LSD, except it allows
full, unrestricted engine output and transfers
power to the wheel with the most traction on
both the front and rear axles.

Built to Tow
When a pickup makes a claim about
towing, ask to see its SAE J2807 towing
standard certification. The Toyota Tundra
was the first to adopt this standard and has
been compliant since 2011.

With a Tow Package, Tundra offers a

maximum tow capacity of 10,500 pounds
(4x2 Regular Cab). So equipped, Tundra gets
a one-piece towing receiver integrated into
the frame prior to bed installation. Special
Tow Package rear springs help provide level
full-load rear suspension height and maintain
a full range of suspension travel.
Toyota engineers tow, too, so they
thought of everything. The Tow Package
upgrades Tundras cooling and electrical
systems. Integrated engine and transmission
oil coolers help handle the demands of
towing under a full load, and a heavy-duty
battery and alternator are added, as well.
The 7-and 4-pin towing hitch connectors sit
above the hitch to help avoid damage during
high-departure-angle driving. SG

Cequent Unveils Towing Industrys First Ever Fifth Wheel Hitch Selector
Revolutionary step-by-step system now available to consumers

equent Performance Products,

N o r t h A m e r i c a s l e a d i n g
manufacturer of towing products
and accessories, is proud to announce the
release of its new fifth wheel hitch selector.
This innovative online system walks the
user through a step-by-step process of
building a complete fifth wheel hitch system,
eliminating confusion about which parts are
needed for correct installation.
Unlike receiver or front mount hitches,
fifth wheel hitches are not vehicle-specific,
so it can be difficult to know which one is
right for you, said John Walsh, CPP vice
president of sales and marketing. Our new
selector system takes the guesswork out
of the process and gives our customers the
peace of mind that they have everything they
need before hitting the open road.
The selector starts by prompting the user
to select his/her vehicle year, make and
model. Next, the user selects a mounting
system, bed size, rail kit, and finally a fifth
wheel hitch. Accessories are offered at the
end of the process. Once all of the selections
are made, the user has the option of printing
or emailing the list of products.
This selector empowers users by guiding
them through the selection process and
allowing them a hand in choosing each piece
of their system, said Dave Rogers, CPP
internet and media specialist, and creator of
the new selector. Its a feature that has been
needed in the market for a long time and Im
happy to have had a hand in the creation of
it.
The selector is available on Cequents
Reese and Pro Series websites.
Additional features will be added in the
months to come.

Truck Covers USAs 2015 GMC Dually SEMA 2014

Feature Vehicle Quite Possibly the Hottest Dually Ever!
By Daniel Forssman, Truck Covers USA

ergeant Mike Dunlap of the United

States Marines always dreamt of
having a truck featured at the SEMA
Auto Show. Four years ago, Truck Covers
USA turned that dream into reality. They
equipped his black Ford Superduty with
their retractable tonneau cover and, with
the help of other sponsors, transformed it
into an impressive SEMA Feature Vehicle.
It stood proudly outside the Las Vegas

Convention Center for all to see. Since then,

Truck Covers USA has made their work with
Mike into an annual enterprise, continuing to
create newer, cooler trucks and bring them to
SEMA in an effort to represent the Sergeant
with respect and humility.
In July 2014, Sergeant Dunlap left for
a deployment that would take him into
February of the following year, meaning that
SEMA was not an option for him. However,

16

W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

TCUSA would not let Mikes absence

prevent him from bringing another truck to
SEMA, knowing that whatever they did to
assist him paled in comparison to the job
he was doing, protecting and serving our
country.
Truck Covers USA took over the build
of the truck, which was a black 2015 GMC
Dually. They stayed in contact with the
Sergeant throughout the entire process to
ensure that they didnt stray from his vision.
Knowing that Mike deserved only the finest
additions to his truck, TCUSA equipped
their own American Roll Cover, a premium
retractable tonneau cover made out of
strong, lightweight aluminum and known for
its durability. The cover uses a specialized
locking system that ensures cargo security
both at home and on the road. Through
this installation, TCUSA hoped to provide
Sergeant Dunlaps truck with the same
security and protection that he provides us
with his service in San Diego and overseas.
Of course, the truck could not have been
completed without the help of numerous
other sponsors. Rize Industries lifted the
truck with their 10-12 suspension system.
They isolated the factory steering system
to eliminate unnecessary wear and tear on
the stock components, also incorporating a
link to minimize the unsightly appearance
of torsion bar by keeping it in its original
position.
American Force Wheels provided their
Scope wheels, a unique set. The front
two wheels protrude from the tires with
spikes sticking out while the back two bend
inwards, giving the car a rough-around-theedges identity while still maintaining its
sleek look, perfect for a Marine like Sergeant
Dunlap.
Interco Tires covered these wheels with
their M16 tires, which perform well on all
terrains, whether driving the highway or off-

roading. Their rugged design complemented

the wheels well, and the tires ensured a level
of quality and dependability on par with all
the other products.
Rigid Industries equipped the Dually with
their top of the line LED lighting system.
Iron Cross Automotive installed the front
bumper and steps. Katzkin contributed their
smooth custom leather interior. Line-X
supplied their reliable Spray-On Bedliner.
Additional Sponsors include Warn, MagHytec, Monster Hooks, Webasto, Hi-Lift,
Factor 55, and HornBlasters.
Truck Covers USA hoped to find some
way to thank Sergeant Mike Dunlap for his
service in the U.S. Marine Corps. And, with
the help of numerous sponsors, they created
a show truck that represents him in the best
way possible. The 2015 GMC Dually, newly
furnished, stood as a feature vehicle in the
Light Truck Accessory Alliance (LTAA)
booth outside the South Hall of the 2014
SEMA auto show. In the end, TCUSA and
the Sergeant decided to name this truck the
U.S. Marine Silverback Raider a fitting
name and a fitting truck for a man who risks
his life everyday so that we can enjoy ours.

Truck Covers USA is proud of everything they

have accomplished with Mike, and humbled

that they have been able to serve a man whose

job it is to do just that to serve. SG

Towing

Keep Americans Safe on the Road When Towing Trailers

With all of the recent accidents involving trailers in Utah, Provo-based sway control hitch company weighsin on how to stay safe on the road when towing a trailer.

owing a trailer can be precarious if you dont understand how

the added weight and length can cause a dangerous situation,
both for your family and others on the road. In response
to the recent accidents involving trailers, Equal-i-zer, the leading
American-made sway control hitch company, urges people to stay safe
while towing by following a few simple guidelines that minimize and
help prevent trailer sway.
The leading causes of trailer sway are side wind, passing semitrucks, driving too fast, emergency stops, improper trailer loading,
incorrect hitch setup, undersized tow vehicles, or a blowout, which can
cause accidents, Kim Dewsnup, RV Sales Account Rep for Equal-izer said.
Sway can be both frightening and dangerous, but there are ways
to prevent it. Prevention steps include: ensuring tire air pressure
is correct, driving a reasonable speed, leaving plenty of stopping
distance, arranging trailer cargo so the center of gravity is just ahead
of the axel, making sure the tow vehicle is rated to handle the trailer
weight and the brake controller is set up properly, and utilizing a
4-point integrated sway control hitch.
Equal-i-zers engineering team has been testing towing safety for
70 years. They offered some expert tips for proper weight distribution
and sway prevention.

1. Load the trailer correctly. Heaviest items should go centered side-toside, and the tongue weight should be between 10% and 15% of the
total trailer weight. This gives the trailer the most stability, without
overloading the hitch.
2. If you are towing a heavy trailer, always use a sway control hitch.
Regular hitches and ball mounts do not prevent sway, which leaves
you without that extra level of protection when encountering road
hazards and inclement weather.
3. Sway control hitches have two different weight ratings. You should
pay attention to the maximum trailer weight and maximum tongue
weight. Never exceed either rating. The best way to avoid this is to
actually weigh the loaded trailer and size the hitch accordingly.

4. Follow the instructions in your hitch owners manual for proper

setup. Remember, when a trailer is coupled to a tow vehicle, the
added weight causes the vehicle to teeter-totter over the rear axle.
The front of the tow vehicle raises and the rear sinks. This causes
a dangerous towing situation, because less weight on the front axle
results in a loss of steering and braking control. Proper set up of your
weight distribution hitch changes the way the tow vehicle and trailer
couple together. It creates a bridge between the trailer and vehicle,
helping them work together like one unit instead of two, distributing
weight more evenly to the axles of both vehicles
30

Towing
5. Perform a tug pull test to make sure the trailer brakes work, and
you are hooked up properly. When you get in the tow vehicle, apply
the trailer brake only, and try to pull away. This is a helpful way to
make sure the brakes are working, and to make sure the coupler is
secure to the hitch balls before hitting the road.

6. Ensure safety chains, breakaway switch, and cable are working and
attached properly. If the system and batteries are working properly
when you pull the plunger out it should apply the trailer brakes. If
your breakaway cable is worn out or frayed, be sure to replace it
before heading out on your trip.

If you start to experience sway, do not slam on the brakes. Jeff

Jarvis, Purchasing Agent, advises, Slide the manual activator on your
trailer brake system inside the vehicle while easing off the accelerator,
this will apply the brakes on your trailer and help straighten out the
trailer. Once the sway stops, slow down, pull over, and make sure
everything is loaded and set up properly.

2015 Hyundai Genesis
The 2015 Genesis represents a bold step
forward for Hyundai, continuing to build
upon its successful strategy of marketing
its premium models under the Hyundai
brand umbrella, rather than a costly
separate luxury brand sales channel. The
new Genesis is incredibly well-equipped
in every configuration, offering even more
content than the first-generation Genesis.
This additional content includes a generous
suite of standard safety and convenience
features, unsurpassed in its class. For the
first time in a Hyundai sedan, a sophisticated
AWD system will be offered, known as
HTRAC, significantly broadening Genesis
appeal in Snowbelt regions throughout
the U.S. The new Genesis will be built at
Hyundais Ulsan, Korea plant, with U.S.
sales beginning in the spring.
Fluidic Sculpture 2.0
Since its 2009 debut on the Sonata
sedan, Hyundais Fluidic Sculpture design
philosophy has been continually enhanced
and refined, progressively influencing every
model in the Hyundai line-up. The all-new
Genesis will be the first Hyundai to embody
Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, the second-generation
of this convention-shattering design theme.

Car Reviews
Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 encapsulates a trio
of main design elements: fluid aesthetics,
the modern Hyundai look, and a premium
ambience. Fluidic forms are still present but
with a more refined and precise presentation.
This latest design philosophy is adaptable
to a wider range of vehicle types and sizes,
from CUVs to premium-luxury flagships.
The all-new Sonata sedan, to debut later this
year, will also clearly manifest the Fluidic
Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy.
Exterior Design
The 2015 Hyundai Genesis expresses
a truly modern design through distinctive
exterior styling with a sleek, upscale
appearance. Evoking a premium feel, the
design cues display a new Hyundai family
aesthetic: simple and harmonious design with
refined fluidic elements. The design features
the modern Hyundai look, with a striking
hexagonal front grille as a key geometric
element, a dynamic crease accent running
along the flanks of the car, and a dynamic
rear design. Design surfaces convey a kinetic
elegance, relying more on voluminous
body sections than surface details to create
dramatic forms. Proportions demonstrate a
long dash-to-axle length, longer wheelbase

36

and shorter overhangs than its predecessor.

These proportions clearly convey the
performance rear-drive configuration beneath
the sheetmetal.
The single-frame 3D-hexagonal grille
ensures the front end of the all-new Genesis
is not only striking, depicted in semi-gloss
chrome, but also encompasses available HID
headlamps, LED indicators and fog lamps.
In profile, the Genesis daylight opening
is more expressive, with fluid lines and
blended surfaces, a sleek C-pillar helping to
emphasize the sporty styling. The rear of the
all-new Genesis benefits from a sculptural
aesthetic with jeweled, full-LED taillamps.
Performance Chassis
Fully leveraging this new, stiffer chassis
is an all-new rear multi-link suspension,
with newly optimized 5-link geometry and
increased suspension travel for a broader
envelope of both dynamic performance and
ride comfort. Lateral suspension stiffness
and overall ride comfort refinement were
top priorities in its dynamic development.
The fully-independent, 5-link front and rear
suspension designs have increased stiffness
compared with the original Genesis, with
increased front and rear suspension travel,

for greater wheel articulation and bump

absorption over a variety of road surfaces.
The reduction in camber angles when turning
at speed results in improved steering feel,
23 percent less tire tilt, and increased lateral
grip. New 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels
are stronger and resist deflection forces
for more precise suspension response to
changing road surfaces.

on Touring and Limited) and with an upgrade
to new Entune multimedia audio systems.
The XLE Touring and XLE Hybrid Touring
gain Blind Spot Monitor as a standard
feature.
The luxuriously spacious cabin makes
the Avalon a standout in the segment. Its
accommodations are among the roomiest in
the entire midsize category. With 103.6 cu.
ft. of cabin space and a 16-cu. ft. trunk, the
Avalon approaches full-size stature, yet its
trim dimensions and svelte weight of 3,505
lbs. (XLE Touring grades) keep it firmly in
the sporty/agile camp.
The 2015 Avalon offers a choice between
an energetic yet silky-smooth V6 powertrain
and Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive. The V6
comes in all grades: XLE, XLE Premium,
XLE Touring, new XLE Touring Sport
Edition and Limited. The Hybrid is available
in the XLE Premium, XLE Touring and

Limited grades.
The Avalon remains the only car in its
class to offer a hybrid. It makes up one of
seven hybrid models in the brands lineup,
making Toyota the clear hybrid leader. All
versions of the 2015 Avalon Hybrid are
rated by the EPA at an estimated 40-mpg
combined fuel economy (40 MPG city / 39

economy in a big, roomy sedan filled to the

Calty Design Research also gets much of
the credit for an interior that anyone could
mistake for that of a much more expensive
luxury model. The engaging yet supremely
refined driving experience, highlighted by
a hushed cabin, sculpted soft-touch interior
surfaces and easy-to-use multimedia, also
encroaches on luxury territory.
Exquisite quietness comes from a
combination of strategically placed soundabsorbing and sound-insulating materials,
acoustic-type glass used for the windshield
and side glass and foam injected into the
A-, B- and C-pillars and rocker panels.
The Avalons quietude sets the stage for
any of the three available audio systems:

standard 8-speaker Entune Audio Plus;

available 9-speaker Entune Premium
Audio with Navigation and App Suite; or
the available Entune Premium JBL Audio
with Navigation and App Suite with 11 JBL

The Entune Premium JBL Audio with
Navigation system uses a 12-channel
external JBL Synthesis amplifier and 11
speakers, including two subwoofers, and
features GreenEdge technology that
reduces power draw on the cars electrical
system. But its the sonic feast for two ears
that impresses most.
An interior available in three themes -almond, light grey and black is replete with
premium touches, such as smoke chrome
trim surrounding the center panel and glossy
trim around the shifter. The leather-wrapped
steering wheel puts a multitude of controls at
the drivers fingertips, including audio cruise
control, information display and hands-free
phone function. The steering wheel also
includes buttons for voice recognition and
a vehicle-to-vehicle distance switch for
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, when so
equipped.
Premium certainly describes the seating,
which in the XLE includes an 8-way
power drivers seat and 4-way power front
passenger seat, both with multi-stage heating

Volkswagen Chattanooga Builds 500,000th

Passat
Volkswagen Chattanooga has recently
achieved a significant production milestone
with the completion of its 500,000th Passat.
The car, produced in the worlds first and
only LEED Platinum certified factory, was
a Candy White Limited Edition, with black
interior, keyless access with pushbutton
start, a rearview camera, heated seats, a 170
horsepower, 1.8 liter turbo engine, premium
radio and 17 inch alloy Sonoma wheels.
Our Passat has raised the bar on what
Americans can expect from a mid-size
sedan and the 500,000th car was built with
the same passion for detail as the first,
Christian Koch, President and CEO of
Volkswagen Chattanooga. Im proud of our
team and excited about new products on the
horizon in this factory, Koch said.
Volkswagen Chattanooga is currently
undertaking a $900 million expansion to
add a second model to the Chattanooga
line. The expansion will add 2,000 jobs, the
North American Engineering and Planning
Center and will produce a 7-seat, midsize
SUV.
Built in Chattanooga, Tenn., the
Volkswagen Passat embodies the spirit

of America and continues to play a key

role in the brands U.S. growth strategy,
said Michael Horn, president and CEO,
Volkswagen Group of America. We are
very proud of the team at Volkswagen
Chattanooga and congratulate them on
reaching the milestone of producing the
500,000th Passat.
The Volkswagen Group of America,
Chattanooga Operations, LLC (Volkswagen
Chattanooga) manufacturing facility began
production in April 2011 and currently
builds the all-new Passat sedan, specifically
designed for the North American market
and winner of the 2012 Motor Trend
Magazine Car of the Year award. In July
of 2014, it was announced that Volkswagen
Chattanooga would build a new midsize
sport utility vehicle and add 2,000 jobs to
the 2,400 already at the plant. Volkswagen
also announced the establishment of
an Engineering & Planning Center in
Chattanooga. Volkswagen Chattanooga is
the first and still only car factory worldwide
with a LEED Platinum certification. It is
also certified to international standards
for energy management (ISO 50001),
environmental management (ISO 14001)
and quality management (ISO 9001).

So Cajun You Can Taste It

South Louisianas Vermilion Parish brings
new meaning to the local food movement
When you hear words like pirogue (1),
turducken (2), and fais-do-do (3), you know
youre in Cajun Country. According to the
U.S. Census, this is the most Cajun place on
earth, so youll hear these terms and many
more.
There are local markets that feature
homegrown, seasonal fruits and vegetables.
They support both retail customers and
the local restaurants. Some other local
businesses, though, have customers
throughout the world. Crops such as rice
and sugarcane are prime examples. South
Louisianas rice industry produces much of
the rice consumed in the country and also
exports to other countries. The same is true
of sugarcane, which has been farmed here
for more than 200 years and contributes more
than $2 billion to the states economy.
The cane industry is playing a role
in new product development here, too.
Handmade rum, using local sugarcane, is
now being made by the areas first micro
distillery. Sweet Crude Rum can be found in
local restaurants and is sold in hand-corked
and numbered bottles.
