SkopjeinthebeginningofNovember1962,becauseofseveraldaysoftorrentialrainandunregulated
riverbanks,theVardarriversuddenlyfloodedSkopjeandit'ssurroundings.About4,500hectaresoflandand
5,000familyhouseswereflooded.Nobodyexpectedthat8monthslateranotherdisaster,evenbiggerand
moredangerous,wouldstrike.

SkopjeearthquakeJuly26th,1963.Anearthquakeunrecorded
bymorerecentchroniclesofSkopje,accustomedtoperiland
suffering.Skopjewasleveled,paralyzed,almostwipedfromthe
faceoftheearth.Onlyafewsecondswereenoughtoturn85%of
Skopjeintoruins.Butthegreatestdamagewastheirreparableloss
of1,066humanlives.Morethan3,300inhabitantsofSkopjewere
lightlyorbadlywounded.Only3minutesafterthefirstcame
anotherearthquakeofthesameintensity(8.5degreesofthe
Mercaliscale),followedbyhundredsoftremorsofsmallerintensity.
ItwasthatdarkFriday,ofJuly26th,1963.Clocksstoppedwiththeir
mechanismspointingtothefatal5o'clockand17minutesAM,
markingthelongestdayinthehistoryofSkopje.Onthatmorning
seismologistsallaroundtheworldrecordedanearthquakewhoseepicenterwasinSkopje.Duringthose
momentstheinhabitantsofSkopjelivedthroughthemostterribleexperience.Theircitywaspassingthrough
acatastropheofincomparableproportions.Thefuryoftheelementswhichmercilesslycrasheddownwith
theirdanceofdeathdestroyedalmosteverythingofvalueinSkopje,leavingonlywoundswhichneededyears
toheal.

Ofthethirtyorsomonumentsthatweredamaged,FortressKale,SuliAnn,Bezisten,thearchaeological
Museum,theNationalBank,cinemasandmanybuildings,theArmyClub(built19261929),theRailway
Stationandmanyothercompletelyruined.AscanbeeseenfromthepicturethereisthearmyClubbythe
riverVardar,oppositeofit,it'stheNationalBank.OnthenorthsideofVardartheretheNationaltheatre
(betweentheStoneBridgeandthesmallerandtinyone).Alsoonthepictureisvisibleintheleftdowncorner,
theAssemblyofMacedonia,thatsurvivedthe1963earthquake.

TheOldRailwaystationbuildingwasdesignedandbuiltintheperiod19381940,bytheSerbianarchitect
Gavrilovic.Duringthe1963earthquakewaspartlydamaged,andtodayit'sremainsarerepresentinga
monumentofthatcatastropheofthecity.Since1970init,issituatedtheMuseumoftheCityofSkopje,
institutedin1949.Itwasadaptedintoamuseumandnowitengages4000m22500m2areplannedforthe
permanentdisplay(inaprocessofrealization)and800m2areusedasagalleryfortemporaryexhibitions.

ThesquareSloboda,wasoneofthemostbeautifulpartsoftheoldSkopje.
AlmostallsignificantobjectwereruinedbytheSkopjeearthquake.Onlyoneof
themremained(WorkersHouse)andcanbeseentodayasadiscothque.
Todaythereisastreetcalled,DimitrijaCupovskipassingthroughit'scircle
today,thatdoesn'texisttoday.Thebuildingseenattheleftsurvivedthe
earthquake,andtodaythereisacafebarcalled"PiazzaLibertas"which
meansSquareSloboda(Freedom)toremindofthiswellknownpartofold

TheYugoslavNationalArmywasthefirsttosendout

severalthousandsofsoldiersbeganthemostdifficult
butalsothemostgloriousstruggleinthepeaceful
time,afightagainsttheruinstosavetrappedpeople.
Societydidnotforgetthesepeacetimeheroes.590of
themwerelaterawardedmedalsfromthePresident
oftheRepublic,JosipBrozTito.Whiletheearthwas
stilltremblingandnobodyknewwhetheranother
earthquakewastostrike,PresidentTitoarrivedinthe
ruinedSkopje.Deeplymovedbywhathesaw,Tito
said:"Skopjehasenduredaterriblecatastrophe,but
Skopjewillberebuiltwiththehelpofthewhole
society,itwillbecomeasymbolofbrotherhoodand
unity,ofYugoslavandworldwidesolidarity".These

acceptalltheaircraftsbringingaid.Inthosefirstmomentsabout80countriessenthelptothecityofSkopje,
whichthusreallybecameasymbolofYugoslavandworldwidesolidarity.
